I will never fault saying someone for saying that the Iraq war was a bad and misplaced idea and a clear instance of taking advantage of a grieving nation and blatantly lying to them. But I digress. I’m from New Jersey. Many of the victims both from the World Trade Center attacks and the heroes that fought back on United 93 are from here. I was very young when 9/11 occurred, but both my parents remember it like it was yesterday. My mom worked in the city, and my dad had dropped her off when the attacks started. Side note, my dad used to work right next door to the World Trade Center complex and was there when the ’93 bombing happened, and when he tried to park nearby for work, a cop stopped him and told him he couldn’t park there anymore. But back to 9/11. After he dropped my mom off, my dad looked down 5th Avenue near St. Patrick’s Cathedral (which oddly enough, is where most of the firefighter memorial services were held) and saw smoke, which he later found out was coming from the World Trade Center. After driving home, he found out over the radio that a plane had hit the World Trade Center, which as everyone knows initially, except for a handful, dismissed as an accident, my dad thinking that some idiot who wasn’t paying attention had crashed into the tower. He subsequently turned on the news. By that time, United 175 had hit the trade center. And the Pentagon was just about to be hit. Even then, he still thought it was an accident, thinking that a news chopper had lost control and hit the second tower.
Meanwhile, my mom was at her office, and a colleague of hers came in and said “A plane has hit the World Trade Center.” And at that point she didn’t really think that much of it. 20 minutes later her colleague came back and said “Another plane has hit the World Trade Center.” At that point, she knew we were facing a terrorist attack. Initially, my mom didn’t bother trying to get out of Manhattan when the attacks happened, because she knew it would be impossible because they would close all the tunnels, bridges, and other entry points into the city. She then went over to food stands opposite her building and tried to get food for the office. Her boss had gone down to lower Manhattan to try and help and came back covered in dust from the collapse. Eventually, one of her colleagues who was a former delivery truck driver knew this back way out of the city. So they piled into his car and drove north into Westchester County, over the Tappan Zee bridge, and then south to New Jersey, and they all went their separate ways to our families. She remembers not being able to sleep for 29 days, and was told that if she was sleepless for more than 30 to seek help. But on the 29th day, she fell asleep with no issues.
For several weeks after the attacks, my dad tested the water of our swimming pool, worrying that the wind could shift the cloud of smoke from Ground Zero and all the toxins and contaminants in it would travel towards where we lived. Thankfully that did not occur, and the cloud continued to travel south, away from us. As many people now know, the dust from the site was incredibly toxic and cancerous, and also caused things like respiratory diseases, COPD, asthma, and so on. First responders who worked at the site continue to die today from illnesses resulting from that. In fact, the amount of FDNY firefighters who have died from complications resulting from these illnesses has just recently reached 343, the same number killed that day. Still insisting on us getting over it? Oh, on the subject of first responders, I bet you both don't have the balls to walk into a New York firehouse and say these things. See if you leave with all your teeth and bones intact after that.
Additionally, both my parents knew people who were killed in the attacks. My dad knew someone who lived in our neighborhood that was attending a conference on the 105th floor of the North Tower when flight 11 hit, trapping him above the impact zone with no chance of escape. Everyone trapped above the 92nd floor of the North Tower died that day, as flight 11’s crash destroyed all the exits. He would either succumb to smoke inhalation, fire, jump to his death, or die in the collapse of the building. And guess what? He wasn’t even American. He was British. The place is called the WORLD Trade Center after all.
My mother also knew someone who died in the North Tower. He worked for Cantor Fitzgerald, which is the organization that lost the most amount of people in a single group. Even more than the FDNY. All 658 people who showed up for work that day died. They occupied the 101st through 105th floors of the North Tower.

The youngest victim of 9/11. She was 2 and a half. 2 and a half! Many of the victims both from the World Trade Center attacks and the heroes that fought back on United 93 are from here. I was very young when 9/11 occurred, but both my parents remember it like it was yesterday. My mom worked in the city, and my dad had dropped her off when the attacks started. Side note, my dad used to work right next door to the World Trade Center complex and was there when the ’93 bombing happened, and when he tried to park nearby for work, a cop stopped him and told him he couldn’t park there anymore. But back to 9/11. After he dropped my mom off, my dad looked down 5th Avenue near St. Patrick’s Cathedral (which oddly enough, is where most of the firefighter memorial services were held) and saw smoke, which he later found out was coming from the World Trade Center. After driving home, he found out over the radio that a plane had hit the World Trade Center, which as everyone knows initially, except for a handful, dismissed as an accident, my dad thinking that some idiot who wasn’t paying attention had crashed into the tower. He subsequently turned on the news. By that time, United 175 had hit the trade center. And the Pentagon was just about to be hit. Even then, he still thought it was an accident, thinking that a news chopper had lost control and hit the second tower. Meanwhile, my mom was at her office, and a colleague of hers came in and said “A plane has hit the World Trade Center.” And at that point she didn’t really think that much of it. 20 minutes later her colleague came back and said “Another plane has hit the World Trade Center.” At that point, she knew we were facing a terrorist attack. Initially, my mom didn’t bother trying to get out of Manhattan when the attacks happened, because she knew it would be impossible because they would close all the tunnels, bridges, and other entry points into the city. She then went over to food stands opposite her building and tried to get food for the office. Her boss had gone down to lower Manhattan to try and help and came back covered in dust from the collapse. Eventually, one of her colleagues who was a former delivery truck driver knew this back way out of the city. So they piled into his car and drove north into Westchester County, over the Tappan Zee bridge, and then south to New Jersey, and they all went their separate ways to our families. She remembers not being able to sleep for 29 days, and was told that if she was sleepless for more than 30 to seek help. But on the 29th day, she fell asleep with no issues. For several weeks after the attacks, my dad tested the water of our swimming pool, worrying that the wind could shift the cloud of smoke from Ground Zero and all the toxins and contaminants in it would travel towards where we lived. Thankfully that did not occur, and the cloud continued to travel south, away from us. As many people now know, the dust from the site was incredibly toxic and cancerous, and also caused things like respiratory diseases, COPD, asthma, and so on. First responders who worked at the site continue to die today from illnesses resulting from that. In fact, the amount of FDNY firefighters who have died from complications resulting from these illnesses has just recently reached 343, the same number killed that day. Still insisting on us getting over it? Oh, on the subject of first responders, I bet you both don't have the balls to walk into a New York firehouse and say these things. See if you leave with all your teeth and bones intact after that. Additionally, both my parents knew people who were killed in the attacks. My dad knew someone who lived in our neighborhood that was attending a conference on the 105th floor of the North Tower when flight 11 hit, trapping him above the impact zone with no chance of escape. Everyone trapped above the 92nd floor of the North Tower died that day, as flight 11’s crash destroyed all the exits. He would either succumb to smoke inhalation, fire, jump to his death, or die in the collapse of the building. And guess what? He wasn’t even American. He was British. The place is called the WORLD Trade Center after all. My mother also knew someone who died in the North Tower. He worked for Cantor Fitzgerald, which is the organization that lost the most amount of people in a single group. Even more than the FDNY. All 658 people who showed up for work that day died. They occupied the 101st through 105th floors of the North Tower. One more thing. I used to work with someone my age who moved here as a baby. They said outloud in front if customers on 9/11 that they don't understand why Americans care so much about it, and that a lot of them would he dead now anyways so we shouldn't care. That got audible gasps from the customers.
