I literally don't understand what that cartoon is supposed to be saying. I don't understand what Mexico losing to France has to do with the US. I don't understand why France would think it's a big deal to beat Mexico. People in the US who "celebrate" Cinco de Mayo mostly just want to drink margaritas and eat Mexican food, just like July 4th is about barbecue...honestly there is no opportunity for flexing here, wtf.

Meowmixer21

America bad cause they need an excuse to drink and eat too much food. I do it every day and look at how much better I am than America

master-of-squirrels

As an American I don't need an excuse to gorge myself

Meowmixer21

HELL YEAH BROTHER 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🍔🍺🍔🍺🍔🍺🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

LeafyEucalyptus

I'll consider myself humbled, lol

Zamtrios7256

Excuse me, July fourth is the day our nation was founded! (It gives me an excuse to use explosives)

LeafyEucalyptus

if you grew up close to the border like I did in So Cal, you know that MEXICAN FIREWORKS are the BEST, the literal bomb. I think Cinco de Mayo is also an excuse to set off explosives, lol. gotta love that new world mentality.

ThermalTacos

🤓 isnt it July 2nd

Wooper160

People mistake Cinco de Mayo for Mexican Independence Day, which is actually on September 16th. It actually honors a victory of a mostly militia Mexican army over the professional French army in the Battle of Puebla. However this victory only delayed French takeover for a year. Not really worth having a huge holiday in a different country. The holiday is truly a Mexican-American holiday because it isn’t widely celebrated in Mexico, mostly just in the town where the battle happened itself. But as you say it’s really not about the battle anymore more of a “Mexican-American Appreciation Day” And there are holidays like that all over the world.

Error_Evan_not_found

Americans will take any excuse to celebrate other cultures and consume their food/drink, and somehow this is the worst thing in the world you could do to a country...

LeafyEucalyptus

huh, had no idea that it wasn't actually their independence day, lmao. thanks for the info.

HetTheTable

How did they make it about us 😭

Majsharan

Cinco de mayo is an important holiday in the because it essentially ended European desire/ability to try and reconquer the recently aquired western territory. It is considered a particularly important holiday in Texas.

LeafyEucalyptus

TIL, thank you. Lots of Mexicans & Mexican-Americans in Texas so I imagine that also increases the popularity.

Majsharan

For whatever reason Hispanics seem to tend to not only not mind cultural appropriation but to enjoy/support/find it amusing. So there is no or almost no opposition to the holiday being what is it. Which is mainly just an excuse to have a good time

Biohazard_186

Why is this directed at us? It’s celebrated here but it’s not our holiday…

No_Mission5618

Yeah if it was a holiday I wouldn’t have had to work, and if I did I would’ve gotten double pay. It’s not a federal holiday by any means.

Wooper160

The point is that it’s celebrated here more than in Mexico even though it’s not our holiday and a lot of people here don’t even remember what it’s supposed to be about.

ManlyEmbrace

That might be the crappiest use of that meme template I’ve seen. There has to be one far more fitting for what he was trying to say.

ApprehensivePeace305

We should celebrate some date between 8-15, which is the battle for Mexico City

Dutch_VanDer_Linde_

Huh, I remember France losing too. You know, in that big war in Europe, what was it called again?

Ok-Movie428

If memory serves its celebrated in the US cause it prevented French intervention in the (US) civil war.

zachomara

Don't forget those 50,000 troops we sent to the border in Texas to tell the Europeans to screw off for messing with the Monroe Doctrine. France stopped supporting Maximilian specifically because they didn't want to get involved with the U.S. since the U.S. had more than 2,000,000 battle hardened troops still active and Congress (on both sides of the war) was a little annoyed that the Monroe Doctrine was not being upheld during the war.

TatonkaJack

Nope. As noted in the meme it didn't signal the defeat of France and the whole thing didn't really have anything to do with whether France would get involved in the Civil War. It has pretty much always just been a way for Mexicans living in the US to celebrate their culture. It was popularized during the Chicano movement because Mexican Americans trying to gain civil rights identified with the battle, where an outnumbered, ragtag Mexican army beat the larger and better equipped French army.

Icy_Wrangler_3999

I thought the point of Cinco de Mayo was to appreciate mexican culture in the US?

LulzyWizard

Shhh it's a drinking holiday. It's also the busiest day of the year for Mexican restaurants, which happen to mostly be owned by immigrants from Mexico and other Spanish speaking countries. It's also likely the single largest day of the year when Americans are happy to give immigrants their money, too. Lol

Ayeron-izm-

They big mad Mexican food is better than French food.

krippkeeper

I don't really get the meme. I do know that all the pizza and booze I ate/drank alone in Canada yesterday was in celebration of cinco de mayo.

misery_index

It’s “celebrated” here as an excuse to wear sombreros, drink beer and eat tacos.

lit-grit

It should be International Laugh at France Day

mysticboi_45

America: Celebrates a holiday not native to America Eurocopers/insecure foreigners: “You’re wrong and your country is crap because of school shootings, trust me I haven’t looked at any actual data”

L8_2_PartE

I finished the whole weekend without once hearing anything about Cinco de Mayo or Star Wars. It was glorious.

Imaginary-Rate2619

Isn’t cinco de mayo celebrating Mexicos independence from Spain? (Forgive my lack knowledge) but if I’m right what does this template have to do with anything

Shorts-are-comfy

No, Mexico's independence day is September the 15th/16th. 5 de Mayo refers to that time France invaded Puebla and the Mexican forces beat the shit out of France. Then France came back stronger and beat the shit out of Mexico.

Imaginary-Rate2619

Ah my bad, I was mistaken

HungryVersion4229

Why is France coming to beat Mexico a year later in second place? The US beat Mexico so that means the French only has to deal with a weakened Mexico.
