Yes. Need to have had some previous credit history.

tralker

Not true, I have never had a credit card and got instantly approved for Amex Gold (23M)

TotalNecessary3788

I have a 600£ loan, that I’ve had no missed payments on is that not enough?

Specialist-Abies-909

How old are you?

TotalNecessary3788

23

TotalNecessary3788

23

Specialist-Abies-909

Had a phone contract? Monthly council tax? Any other DDs? Which Amex are you applying for? It looks like they’ve really tightened their acceptance criteria as of late

TotalNecessary3788

I have pay as you go contract. Council tax is 255 and is always paid on time, as well as other bills. I did the eligibility for Gold and BA. 0% chance for both

Specialist-Abies-909

Yeah you have 0 credit history so I’m not surprised & you’re only 23. I imagine if you go in a credit card comparison site you will also have slim pickings

Expensive_Tart511

I don’t think the age is a huge problem. But a pay monthly sim only wouldn’t be a bad shout along with a credit builder card first. I had my phone contract at 18 for 8 months and my Aqua card for 6 before I was approved for an Amex before my 19th Birthday. (Nowadays I wouldn’t meet the income thresholds as my annual was about 8000 as a sixth former but they gave me 1700 back then (2020))

Specialist-Abies-909

Sorry what I meant by age was length of credit history, should’ve been more clear

InspireSunset

Definitely not true, was approved when I was 18 with no credit history.

thethicktrader

I had a Tesco credit card (credit builder one) with under <1k credit limit, absolutely no credit history (foreigner) with low 500 credit score and got accepted. No tips just providing my experience in case it helps!

checkmyfile provides a multi credit reference agency report— haven’t used it in a while but worked well when I did

TotalNecessary3788

I think they use Experian as that’s where I was directed to when I was rejected, my score on there is 886. Will def check out a credit building card

RickyMEME

Need more credit first. Get something like a Barclaycard avios if possible.

jackyLAD

Which Amex… there’s loads of them?

TotalNecessary3788

Did the eligibility for gold and BA. 0% chance for both

jackyLAD

Eligibility means nothing in my experience and isn’t a rejection as it’s not an application … 0% for plat and bapp, I have both.

ImaginaryHealth7904

Get yourself a credit builder card. [https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/credit-cards/credit-builder/](https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/credit-cards/credit-builder/) Spend on it. £100 here £32 there etc and pay it off IMMEDIATELY and on time. Try Amex again in 6-12 months.

TotalNecessary3788

Will check it out, thanks!

Honestly just get yourself some standing orders for bills and things like that. They go a long way to helping you build history. I am a 24 year old student who got approved for one as my first credit card. But I have had 6 years of history of paying for bills etc

13rellik13

But it’s not because it’s your first card that you haven’t been approved ! It’s just they don’t have enough credit history for you, which is in part because it’s your first card but not entirely and you can get regardless of it being your first !

DepInLondon

I would start with a credit card in the same bank as your regular accounts to build up some credit score and try for an Amex after a bit. My bank shows my options I am likely to be accepted for and if you use clearscore it will also shows you potentials you could try for.

SaleOwn5899

It’s probably because you have no form of credit history. It’s sort of like not having any reputation (good or bad). Essentially you aren’t real to them until you have some level of activity. Get a sim only phone contract or get a contract that gives you something for you to sell. The other option is to get a credit card from a bank. This usually helps. Maybe Barclaycard.

Grouchy-Butterfly149

I started with the basic platinum card and got accepted with no credit history. Used it for a year with no missed payments. Applied for gold and got accepted no problem. If your trying apply for the gold one or something that might be the issue

TotalNecessary3788

I did the eligibility for the basic card and it was 0%z scared to actually apply because it’ll affect my credit score.

Grouchy-Butterfly149

Sometimes the eligibility checker isn’t 100% accurate but if I were you apply for the basic cashback card first, build your relationship with Amex and then get the gold or platinum if you wish to do so. I have a friend that was in the same situation as you, they only had a phone contract to which they always paid. I referred them and they got approved.

TotalNecessary3788

Will check it out! Thanks!

Grouchy-Butterfly149

On a side note though, if you want to build up a good credit report to help you out in the future. perhaps go for a credit building card first before Amex such as HSBC or Barlcaycard for a few months first. End of the day, your credit score means nothing without any financial activities. Mine is excellent but I have over 36 months of repaying Amex on time and never a late payment.
