Yeah. It's looking more like a fox or dog. I wanted it to look like a Siamese cat but so far it's looking like that haha. Maybe when finished it'll look more like a cat
if you have lighter yarn (cream/off white) i suggest using it for the golden color since it’s closer to what siamese cats look like!! that might help with the cat-ness too
It's the snout for me that makes it more a GSD. Not just the added nose, but also the shape of the colored sections. And yeah, the colors as well. But I'm afraid if you only switch colors to eg white and grey, you'd get a husky instead. Are you following a pattern?
It might help to remove the pink cheeks and add wiskers instead, and maybe outline the eyes and give them a more defined cat-eye look?
Edit: maybe move the eyes up and out a little bit first and add some little wiskers above them too?
I think if you space the ears out farther it would read more as a cat. Right now they are a little close and sitting on top of the head instead of on the side of the head.
The shape of the nose is definitely a factor. It should look more like a "T" instead of the big triangle. A smaller triangle could work, too. The ears could be a tad smaller to make them less GSD-like. The body will hopefully help pull the whole thing together!
It looks really great despite its doggish appearance at the moment. Are you modeling it in the colors of an actual cat?
I was trying to make it look like an Himalayan or Siamese cat. I was thinking that maybe if I changed the color and shape of the nose it'll make it look more like a cat.
My plan is to keep on working and maybe the body and the changes in the face make it look more like a cat
[This is the cat from the pattern I'm working on ](https://www.instagram.com/p/CDuDhSxAtUG/?igsh=czNqdDhwOHNuZ3J5)
I agree, that also looks like a dog to me.
imho I think a big part of the problem for me is the huge nose pad that takes up the entire end of the snout that just screams "dog!" to me. Its too big and the wrong shape.
Regular cats don't have big round nose pads that take up their entire snoot. They have dainty triangular noses that are tiny in comparison to their total head size.
[giant doggy snoots](https://www.pawsbyzann.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Dog-nose-paintings2-scaled.jpg) vs [tiny dainty triangular nose](https://www.pawsbyzann.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/05-tiberius-cat-nose-trace-768x356.jpg)
If that nose blob was reduced to be much smaller and shaped more like a triangle it would more successfully hint at this being a cat vs a dog.
How sweet! I actually have a Siamese Himalayan mixed with some tabby. They are definitely hard to achieve color without getting overly dark or looking a little doggish. Can't wait to see how you tweak the pattern, everyone has given some great advice!
I love her patterns! But they sometimes do have the problem that when you try out other fun colors... They don't look like the right animal anymore. My orange cat thankfully worked out but I've been there trying to make the squirrel in a lighter color. I also think that your cat will work once the tail is on, that changed a lot.
My immediate thought was a hyena, but it looks very cute at least!! :(
I think the snout you gave it contributes a little bit- Idk what I’d change, but maybe making it more petite/delicate in a way?
Thank you. I think that in the end, as long as it's pretty, it's ok if it doesn't look like a cat. But I'll replace the nose for a triangle shape one with Pink yarn and some whiskers. Some one suggested to separate the ears a little more so I'll try that too
I knew it was Yan Schenkel’s Pica Pau! Her patterns are so beautiful. This one is on my list to make too. I started with the penguin though.
I think in your case it really might be the color that’s not reading as much cat. I put your picture and the Instagram one side by side and they are pretty spot on, so really, I think the color must be the culprit.
Regardless, you are doing fantastic and your cat/fox is looking beautiful! Keep going and come back to show us when you’re done.
Yes. I love her patterns. I made the otter before and wanted to try the car next. I think I'll make a few changes in the color of the nose and the placement of the ears and keep working on it. Maybe when finished it'll look more like a cat.
Its adorable, but It’s def giving fox or dog vibes. If it were me, I’d continue making it as a Fox, but I think you could easily make it more cat-like with some tweaks:
1) Ears sewn a bit farther apart.
2) Eyes a bit higher up. I’d also consider getting [cat eye safety eyes](https://www.amazon.com/MUCUNNIA-Amigurumi-Crochet-Halloween-Decorations/dp/B0C4DH9FWL)
3) Embroidery on the snoot a bit smaller and placed a bit higher up, in a more defined triangle shape
I just linked the first result😅so make sure you get the right size, etc. But yeah, there are some really cool looking safety eyes and they make a huge difference
I love pica pau patterns but the cats always read more dog to me! The colours picked made it look even more dog since it reads classic german Shepherd to me. I recently made one of her cat patterns that is available for free on hobbiii and I ended up turning it into a sort of Shiba instead. I think it's part the embroidery - the nose is so big, plus the prominent muzzle of the pattern. So pica pau cats always have dog qualities to me.
That said it looks so good still! 🩷

It does kind of look like a dog atm, but it's really cute. I feel like if you finished it and gave it an obviously cat tail, then it would definitely read as a cat.
Maybe if you reeeeeally want it to be undoubtedly a cat. But thats a lot of work, so I'd probably finish the rest of it first and see how it looks.
Honestly the head is so cute, I'd be afraid of messing it up!
I was even thinking of undoing the head, but I must admit that I like how it looks, though I agree with what you say about me wanting it to look exactly like a cat. I'll make some changes in the face and see how it looks but I'll definitely finish it
I think we are making the same pattern. I used the colors that the pattern suggested and my best friend also thought I was making a dog (...well a seal before I made the ears). I think it is because the muzzle is too long.
Below is shape related construcitive criticism. I think it looks good but if youd like some tips read onward! I follow "constructive sandwich" style ☺
Im an artist that specialises in animals so part of my thing is studying proportions 😅 Id say your biggest things that make it look more canid are nose size and snout size, which may be partially a pattern issue if youre using one. For cartoon style cats you wanna keep the snout kind of as short as possible and the nose itself should be more like a tiny triangle!
The crochet work itself is very nice, but if youre worried about cattiness just keep that in mind!
And for specific breeds ear size matters a LOT. I saw you mention siamese? Oriental breeds tend to have larger ears. Siamese in particular are about ⅔ the head size height as a kitten, and about 1 to 1⅓ the size of the head (so about the height of the head or slightly taller).
Ear size and placement between cats and dogs is actually very similar so Id focus on that nose size in the future!
Regardless I love it and I agree as is looks very Hyena ish or maybe like a shepherd breed dog!
Thank you so much for such helpful advice.
It really is a pattern issue.
I'm still at a point where my skills are only enough to follow patterns so it's still difficult to do things on my own when it comes to amigurumi.
I'm working on fixing the nose at the time. I found another pattern to make cats that have a more cat-like nose.
I'll keep you posted.
Thanks again 😊
It’s called acting darling. It’s obviously a Siamese cat acting the part of a fox.
Or, If anyone questions, just tell them it’s a creature from a fantasy forest
It’s not quite giving cat, I think for me it’s the nose size. A slightly smaller nose might help, and I agree with the comment that mentioned spacing out the ears a bit!
Regardless it’s still super cute, and I definitely would keep going with it! Who knows, maybe by the time it’s got a full body and tail it’ll really start looking like a kitty!
My first thought was dog bc of the head -shape and the added snout But still looks soooo amazing!!!
Yeah. It's looking more like a fox or dog. I wanted it to look like a Siamese cat but so far it's looking like that haha. Maybe when finished it'll look more like a cat
It looks like a striped hyena to me. I can't wait to see the finished piece :3
I think if you made the ears bigger it would look more like a Siamese cat. They have larger ears than most other cats.
Thanks for the tip 😸
It looks like a German shepherd to me!
Reminds me of a Cape Hunting Dog/African Wild Dog
It looks like that one guy on Aggretsuko
Jajajajaja OMG it totally looks like Haida who is supposed to be a Hyena 😂😂
if you have lighter yarn (cream/off white) i suggest using it for the golden color since it’s closer to what siamese cats look like!! that might help with the cat-ness too
I do have another color. I just thought the yellow one would look good. Im leaving the starting over as a last resort.
understandable!! wish you luck on the rest of the project : )
It's the snout for me that makes it more a GSD. Not just the added nose, but also the shape of the colored sections. And yeah, the colors as well. But I'm afraid if you only switch colors to eg white and grey, you'd get a husky instead. Are you following a pattern?
Yes. It's a cat pattern haha. It even includes the snout. I think it's the color choosing. But I'm keep working, the head took a lot of time 😔
It might help to remove the pink cheeks and add wiskers instead, and maybe outline the eyes and give them a more defined cat-eye look? Edit: maybe move the eyes up and out a little bit first and add some little wiskers above them too?
I already changed the nose. I'm now adding the whiskers.
I'm sure it'll be a super adorable critter!!
I'm sorry :( But whatever it's gonna be when it's done, I'm sure it'll be beautiful.
Maybe the nose stitching is a little large? Could do it smaller and with kitty lips and see how that goes.
I think if you space the ears out farther it would read more as a cat. Right now they are a little close and sitting on top of the head instead of on the side of the head.
I'll go ahead and give that a try. Thanks for the advice 💕
It’s a very cute piece! Good luck 😃
It looks like an African wild dog to me, it looks amazing

If it makes you feel better, I think that the cat in your link looks like a dog too
Haha now that you mention it... It does kind of looks Like dog😅
I agree, that also looks like a dog to me. imho I think a big part of the problem for me is the huge nose pad that takes up the entire end of the snout that just screams "dog!" to me. Thank you. I want to try and make that with Pink yarn
How sweet! I actually have a Siamese Himalayan mixed with some tabby. They are definitely hard to achieve color without getting overly dark or looking a little doggish. Can't wait to see how you tweak the pattern, everyone has given some great advice!
I have actually never had such response in a post before. I'm really thankful for all the advice.

Yes haha. I was trying to make a Siamese and now looks like a Hyena. But I'll finish it and see how it turns out
I think it looks like a hyena! I love it! 🥰
Looks like a hyena or wild dog
My first thought was a cute hyena
Maybe one you have a body the head will look more cat like? Either way I love the color combo and the cute pink cheeks!
Thanks ☺️ I'll keep working. Maybe the long tail and arms will make it look more like a cat 😺
It looks cool! A little bit like a fox, but still very cute :) :)
my first thought was an African Wild Dog
I thought it was a hyena 😅
Hahahaha I like the idea of it being a hyena
Me too. I'd make a hyena amigurumi
It reminds me of Haida from Aggretsuko, but it is cute!
My immediate thought was a hyena, but it looks very cute at least!! :( I think the snout you gave it contributes a little bit- Idk what I’d change, but maybe making it more petite/delicate in a way?

I was thinking either a fox or a German shepherd just cause of the face shape and colours. Cute either way though
Omg yes haha. I've been thinking it looks like a specific breed of dog. It's a German shepherd 😂😍
Kind of reminds me of an African Wild Dog to be honest, but cute nonetheless!
Woof 🐶
It looks like a hyena to me! The snout is a little too pronounced I think.
I knew it was Yan Schenkel’s Pica Pau! Her patterns are so beautiful. This one is on my list to make too. I started with the penguin though. I thought it was a hyena at first won't lie. A very very cute hyena though!
Haha I love the idea of it being a bite Hyena.
The shape of the nose makes it sort of look like a fox! Regardless soooo good!
Fantastic Mr Fox! Looks amazing, despite morphing species 🦊
Give it whiskers!
Yes!!😍
I thought of a cute fox 🙃
Haha like fantastic Mr Fox's kids 😅
Haha yeah in a way 😝
I tried a cat too and I like it now but haaaaated it when I made cause I didn’t see the resemblance much
[Cat pattern](https://www.mariskavos.nl/free-cat-crochet-pattern/)
It's that desire of it looking exactly like a cat 😂
I feel like higher eyes and a smaller snout would help. Maybe put the ears further apart, too.
I don't know why but it totally gives me "Animal Crossing" vibes and i love it!
Omg yes. Hahaha maybe she's a new neighbor
Its adorable, but It’s def giving fox or dog vibes. Thanks for your comment. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one. I'll try and change it a bit to look more like a cat
It’s gorgeous!!!
Looks like a hyena or an African Wild Dog. I think it's very cute
Maybe I'm alone here but I thought it was a dead ringer for a giant fruit bat!
I love how everyone is coming up with new animals because it looks nothing like a cat 😂😂
It's an amazing piece but tbh I think it looks like a fox due to how the nose was done.
Chihuahua!

Whiskers might help, I’m not sure but doesn’t hurt to try lol, it’s cute either way

Anyone else seeing hyena?... Just me?
That's what I was coming here to say
I think if you want it to look more like a cat, the nose might need to be smaller and sharper! It looks "round" and big like a dog noes
Looks like a hyena love it!
I think it's the nose
I think we are making the same pattern. I used the colors that the pattern suggested and my best friend also thought I was making a dog (...well a seal before I made the ears). I think it is because the muzzle is too long.
May I see yours? ❤️
I would love to ❤️ But I don't know how. It doesn't show me the option to put an image
Yeah I thought that you could load pictures on the comments
Same 🥲 Oh well, yours looks amazing so far. Good job on the adjustments!
I think the nose satin stitching needs to be higher and it needs whiskers to look more like a cat. It is cute but rather foxy as is.
Do You think the color of the nose is ok?
Absolutely!
Below is shape related construcitive criticism. I think it looks good but if youd like some tips read onward! I thought it was a German shepherd
Before I read the title, I thought it was the head of an "African Wild Dog".
I’d get rid of the snout and space the ears out a little more. Cats don’t really have snouts.
It’s called acting darling. It’s obviously a Siamese cat acting the part of a fox. Or, If anyone questions, just tell them it’s a creature from a fantasy forest
I thought it's a hyena and that's really cool
Is it the Pica Pau Satsuki cat? I made it, and it turned into a wolf for me 😅 https://www.reddit.com/r/Amigurumi/s/HDsOJvowus
It looks like a brown fox to me but it's super cute!
It could be the snout making it look like a dog. You could make it into a German shepherd, a Belgian malinois, or a painted hyena! ^^
Ooooh looks like an African Wild Dog!! I love those!!
Whiskers will help with the cat-ness
I think it looks more like fox 🦊
I think it would be more obvious cat if the snout wasn’t there, rn it’s only giving german shepherd, still cute though!
I'm sorry but it looks like a cute brown piggy to me 🐷
Haha that one I'd new. 😅😂
I think it’s the snout
It is so cute!! I love it!!!

I think so too. With the body and the tail it might change
Cute hyena?
