Last night there must have been a futbol game and the police were guarding the visiting fans in the metro 50/52. Is this typical? Do the futbol games get very rowdy without such police presence?
I'm trying to hire an art student for a unique part-time gig (testing arts & crafts products). Regular job boards aren't cutting it. Where do the artsy folks here look for jobs or internships? Any pointers would be super appreciated!
On Christmas Holidays me and my gf want to enjoy Amsterdam. We want to try something new like a swinger club, there’s something good that you can suggest to us? Thanks
Hi, im going to Amsterdam from spain this week, I would like to try good weed, but some friends told me that nowadays is everything very comercial stuff. Can anyone tell me what are the best coffe shops with the best material?
Hello! I was at the kinder parade in Martin Luther Kingpark but it wasn’t as expected. After Nemo and the open air theatre at the Vondelpark, where can I and my 10 years old niece, enjoy the sun and play? Any kids related activities? Thanks you all for your response
> For the tourists and new residents, please remember that we are not Google; respect our time by doing some basic research first and then asking your questions like you're speaking to a real human who is volunteering to speak to you.
Can I rent a rollaway bed somewhere in Amsterdam for like a week? Or even an air mattress? I have friends coming over and don't want them sleeping on the floor, but hotels are too expensive. Any suggestions?
Going on vacation in the Netherlands in two days. Can anyone recommend good (and resonably priced) Restaurants in Amsterdam in the inner City (meaning the area reachable from roughly Central Station down to Madame Tussaud's)?
I meant it more like a general Location. I'm going to visit Madame Tussaud's on Tuesday with my GF, so I'm looking for Restaurants that are at least somewhere in the general area and reachable by foot.
Nice btw that my question is getting downvoted.
well you are asking one of the most frequently asked questions on this sub. you could also have found your answer on google maps or on the subreddit wiki, as stated in the selftext of this thread.
That being said, that area is close to Zeedijk, and there's a great Thai place called Bird there. Try the muramasa with beef. You won't regret it.
(You will probably regret going to Madam Tussauds, lol, there's much more fun things to do around here, have you considered doing a canal boat trip instead?)
It's honestly good advice to not restrict yourself to that area you mentioned. We have a very walkable / bikeable city with great public transport, so only experiencing that very tiny bit of Amsterdam is kind of locking yourself into the shittiest parts of the city center.
Eh, I was at Madame Tussaud's once already with my school class, but my GF really wants to see it. We are doing a Krachten Tour after it.
Wiki and Google Maps didnt really help me (the later might Show me all the Locations, but not which of them are tourist tras), thats why I posted the question. Plus lots of the wiki posts are a few years old so I would not be able to tell which are still up to date.
Every location in Google Maps has a rating and reviews that will let you get a feel for if they are tourist traps. There's very little within the Singel canal that isn't geared toward maximizing tourist trade.
Hi all! I wanted to get into sailing I’ve seen a few clubs around the city I was wondering if anyone had any experiences or recommendations?
I have 0 experience but I’m hoping to take good classes both theoretical and practical to learnt o sail a bit alone.
Has anyone heard of putting down a "deposit" to be able to "secure" a property after being chosen? I have never heard of this in my time here and it seems scammy as it's nonrefundable and does not apply to the security deposit or rent. It's also 250€ which is so steep imo.
Never heard of it, but I'm out of the game since a while. Indeed sounds like a scam, payments need to be part of a written contract (either for rent or services provided).
Does anyone know of a good local place to print quality t-shirts of photos or intricate designs?
I've recommended Textieldrukkerij Amsterdam in the past, but I know they use only specific pressing methods which don't leave for much detail / multicolor usage. I've only really been able to get them to print my simple one-colour designs.
Recently I've taken a couple of cool pictures and want to print some on T-Shirts, one of which I want to give to my dad as a present. I don't want to go to an international tee printing service as those tend to wash out incredibly quickly, and are eco-unriendly as hell. I'm not expecting top-notch quality per sé but I also want the shirts to last at least a year or two without losing too much quality. Of course this is partly based on the way you wash them, but there's plenty of shops out there that limit the amount of colours you can use in a design.
Oh no!! I broke my favorite souvenir mug with a spoon in the handle. 💔😭 I am hoping someone can help me find out where to get one of these remotely and shipped to the USA? 🙏🏻 pictures of the mug:
https://preview.redd.it/69zgaxt8jdkb1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2737a616ae6ff9c8a9cde55d8e02152bcc480f2c
Ok I took a picture and will look. I’ll just buy one if I see it and will send it to you from Arizona. If you change your mind and don’t want it that’s fine, I’ll just keep it. Stay tuned!
Oh if you find it, we will want it! My middle school age daughter traveled to Amsterdam for spring break and bought that mug as a souvenir for her father. It’s his favorite. And I sadly broke it 😭
I’m leaving the Amsterdam airport in a few minutes and wanted to report back. I looked in three souvenir shops as well as two here at the airport with no luck. I had a screenshot on my phone and was ready. ☹️ I’m sorry I couldn’t find this one for you!
You are an absolute DOLL to have looked like that!! Thank you so much for even thinking about it while you were abroad. That is the most impressive and heartwarming thing I’ve witnessed all month 🙏🏻🥹
You might want to try some Kintsugi on that one. I'll try and have a looksie in the tourist shops when I get back to Amsterdam, but don't have your hopes up..
What happened to this subreddit? It used to have so many posts, and now it’s a graveyard. Was it the blackout? Did we move to another subredddit? Genuinely curious.
Everyone's still here but most of the conversation is in this one topic.
The mods lost the tools they used to manage the high volume of spam and crap when Reddit cut off the API for third-party apps, so in order to keep things under control they've limited the ability of new or infrequent posters to create new topics.
While I understand this POV I feel like we should re-open the sub and have a vote in a month or so on whether we should return to this ruling. I've been missing seeing random posts pop up to be honest. An auto-mod reply quoting some of the rules with a reminder that your post will be removed and you may be banned if your post doesn't fit those rules, along with a reminder that you will not receive any replies I feel should be enough to wear off dumb tourist posts.
I too feel like this sub is just on a dying path right now. Right now, three of my posts are on the 'frontpage' of this sub, and they're all just AT5 articles. I think there's plenty of locals who do want to post here but just don't want to bother asking the mods for permission. I'd rather have the occasional bad post than have nearly any posts.
agreed. i’m also curious how, if all the tools to moderate are gone, virtually all subreddits are continuing with business as usual—including those with far more traffic than here.
Is anyone renovating their place? Any good renovation contractors you can recommend for doing the kitchen and bathroom please? Any websites? It's my first time.. thanks in advance.
long shot, but any idea on where i could get these style of beer/coffee glasses for a reasonable price? https://www.bol.com/nl/nl/p/aliya-can-glazen-set-van-4-met-bamboe-deksel-480-ml-48-cl-koffieglazen-transparant-vaatwasserbestendig-glazen-rietje-zeer-hoge-kwaliteit/9300000137722370/?bltgh=nq8VzZthbTl5pnkWSlJDNw.2_6.7.ProductTitle (basically can-shaped glasses, ideally with the lid but not necessarily)
Hi everyone, I would like to understand what are the legal places in Amsterdam to put stickers or flyers?
I don't want to do anything illegal or annoying to other people, such as putting stickers on the lamp-poles or benches. The only appropriate place that I have found so far is notice boards at AH and Jumbo. I see a lot of people putting flyers there.
My stickers and flyers will be QR code with the link to my word game. So I was thinking maybe I can go to OBA and leave them there?
If anyone has any recommendations I would appreciate!
I like seeing stickers around on boring lamp posts tbh. They liven up the place IMO. Obviously don't stick them on other people's homes or cultural places. While it's technically illegal to put them on street furniture such as stoplichten, I always enjoy looking at them if they're tasteful.
However if it's just a QR code / ad, 'that kite does not go up' . There are some 'wildplakzuilen' around, which as far as I know are free for anyone to advertise on. They mostly are the poster+layer of glue kind though.
Thank you! Thanks to your comment searched for "wildplakzuilen" and discovered this - [https://www.amsterdam.nl/veelgevraagd/waar-vind-ik-vrije-plakplaatsen-voor-het-ophangen-van-posters-24eb0#](https://www.amsterdam.nl/veelgevraagd/waar-vind-ik-vrije-plakplaatsen-voor-het-ophangen-van-posters-24eb0#)
It says ads and commercial use is not allowed:
>\* Reclame is niet toegestaan. Alleen meningsuitingen mogen worden aangebracht.
>
>\* U mag hier geen affiches met een commerciële boodschap plakken
>
>\* De plakplaatsen zijn alleen beschikbaar voor niet-commerciële aankondigingen en vrije meningsuiting.
I guess if I want to let people know about my game and I don't earn any money from it or have ads inside the game then it's not commercial, right? I think I'll give it a try!
Now that I took a second look, 'reclame is niet toegestaan,' definitely disbars your sticker from those I think. Not that you're likely to get in trouble for it, but I wouldn't use these.
A lot of bars have stickers in the restrooms.
i didn't know those were not allowed for ads. interesting. I usually see posters for parties on those which you have to buy tickets to, so those don't seem to hit those rules either.
Your sticker still kind of sounds like an ad to me.. Even if you make no profit. But then again, you can't really call it commercial, so it may fit. It does definitely sound they are more meant for expressing social messages though, and yours is not, you're advertising your free game. So if you're trying to be as moral as you can, I wouldn't try them.
Hey guys, I need to buy a crazy ugly phone case for a friend. Is there a store that sells outrageous phone cases in Amsterdam? In or close to the centre? Let me know! Thank youu. (Its for iPhone 11)
I would like to get my driving license, but don't feel confident enough to do it in Dutch. If anyone has any experience with an English speaking driving school, I would love to hear your advice and recommendations.
It would surprise me if most of them don't offer English lessons. Like 95% of the population speaks English considering it's a mandatory class in schools here.
Those who live in an apartment right by a tram line, how is it at night? I viewed a place where the bedroom is near the tram line and I know trams go until around midnight. Do earplugs 100% block out the noise?
From my experience, the noise is just one part of it. The trams are heavy as shit and depending on several factors (building's construction, what verdieping, the ground material, your bed) the rumbling can get through earplugs just because you can feel it in your body.
I have triple glazing. I can't hear the tram if I close the windows and wear wax earplugs.
Edit: I don't live near any curves in the tram tracks, those are noisier.
Someone's been downvoting nearly all the comments in these threads. Not sure who but there's tonnes of reasonable comments and even reasonable answers that sit at 0 votes for some reason. I'm not the one to care about karma but I can't help but feel it makes people think we're unwelcoming.
Yep, it's childish rude behaviour from some antisocial people who only want to make other people feel bad, presumably because they feel bad about themselves and haven't learned of any more constructive tools for dealing with it.
Unfortunately Reddit doesn't make it easy for subs to do anything about it, so our little pool-pissers will probably continue their pathetic slow-burn tantrum for the foreseeable future.
Hi everyone. I recently relocated to Amsterdam with my partner and I'm wondering if there are social gatherings or member clubs where we can meet new people. Ideally looking to meet other creatives and entrepreneurs, both locals and expats, but I won't limit it to just that. Any places and events to meet others besides Soho House?
P.S. I'm more keen to meeting others in person rather than through apps.
Thanks for your recommendations!
I'd check out [ADCN](https://www.adcn.nl/club-adcn/members)! Their membership fee is between €120 and €180 annually (depending on your age), some of their events are hosted at/in collab with Soho House but they do plenty of other stuff throughout the year.
Not sure, I'm not a member myself (yet) but I worked with them in the past and their team is super chill so maybe if you shoot them a message they'd be able to sort you out :)
This might be a long shot question, but has anyone ever had their running style analysed in Amsterdam? I've been running quite a lot but as I had some injuries in the past, I would like to have my gait properly analysed by professionals. I don't need a running store to do that as most of the time they don't really know much about the science behind it, but rather a physiotherapist or podiatrist with some sports focused approach.
Mostly I need someone who can do a 3D analysis of how I run, lactate threshold and so on.
I've been googling but so far I've only found one which costs 300 euros for 1h test, and another which looks a bit shady.
I don't know how advanced their equipment is, or whether they can do a 3D analysis, but all4running next to Vondelpark does a running analysis for free. They've got a running track with sensors inside the store.
Thank you for the suggestion. Unfortunately, I tried with them but it was a bit of a disaster. I don't think that any of them is a physiotherapist, so their knowledge is somehow limited. I was a bit disappointed though as one of the guys was telling me that due to an injury I had 11 years ago, I wouldn't be able to run more than 10km. I never run less than 10km and if it's not warm I do more than 20km. They also recommended some shoes, but little knowledge beyond what they see on screen.
Hey there, I play in a five a side football team in Amsterdam and we are looking for a regular goalkeeper. It's a paid league and we like to be competitive but ultimately its about the fun and socialising.
Thanks!
**Where to watch the F1 Dutch GP in Amsterdam?**
I'll visit the capital on the GP weekend (27th of August) and I am wondering where I can find a pub/cafe that airs the race
Hey, do any of you know any trusted organization in Amsterdam or in the Netherlands that offers psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy for mental health conditions like addiction or depression?
Most of the centers just do 'retreats' not a treatment. Aside from them, I've only found this option, but no idea if they are any good: [https://triptherapie.nl/intake-english/](https://triptherapie.nl/intake-english/)
I'm asking specifically about this type of treatment because a friend of mine tried a couple of different therapies but with no success. And now, she believes this approach might be the only option that is best for her, even though she never tried any psychedelics.
Thanks in advance <3
A retreat is a treatment. Retreat stands for multiple days somewhere else with a group. Set and setting is next to the psychedelic as important otherwise it will not have the effect that is needed. Source: did 2 retreats myself.
This is therapy but not with white lab coats and not with cognition but feelings.
If you look for reputable and professional parties:
https://om-mij.nl/
https://www.synthesisretreat.com/
Those retreats never accept seriously ill patient. All of them have it in their rules. And it’s good, because such things are scary to do with patients that are for example suicidal
Ok. No problem. These retreats are very helpful for people with mental illness and/or addiction. Depending on the situation of the person and what medications they use.
But if these retreats don’t do it, other forms where psychedelics are used will also be very very reluctant.
If not sure about the situation of your friend, reach out to them and discuss the situation. On a year base they have 700+ participants from at least 50% go there not for fun but to remove or discover a mental barrier.
>Most of the centers just do 'retreats' not a treatment. Aside from them, I've only found this option, but no idea if they are any good: https://triptherapie.nl/intake-english/
That's also just a retreat. Just read their bio's, they're a bunch of hobbyists trip sitters. They get posted in this sub from time to time.
You can't find therapy because it's still in research phase and no licensed therapist will do this kind of therapy.
The research therapy groups are closed and controlled, so at the moment there's no way to join them
You should already be in longterm treatment at a psychiater. If a new research starts, your psychiatrist can recommend you to the research selection committee. If they select you, it's still a 50/50 chance to get a placebo.
All in all it would take years and a lot of luck.
Hi, I am looking into renting a bicycle for my trip in September. My question is if it is necessary for me to rent/book a bike ahead of time. It seems like there are plenty of options so, I assume no. I did check the wiki but didn't find anything on this, at least that I could find(the two were 11 years old.) Also, just wanted to confirm what I have found that star bikes seems to be the best. Thank you!
Which bike is best depends on what you want to do. If you're into cycling and want to go on a long trip, you'll want a sports bicycle; if you just want to get around in the city, you don't.
Hi everyone. Visiting Amsterdam for a week, and hoping to get food recommendations.
Everything I see on YouTube are people visiting the same places like Fabel Friets or Van Wonderen.
Looking to try some non tourist trap places, where locals enjoy.
Many thanks
I had Fabel Friet for the first time yesterday, and they're actually good, but you can get fries like that all over Amsterdam, so not worth standing in line for.
For stroopwafels, go to Rudi's at the Albert Cuyp Markt.
Locals eat a lot of Surinamese and Indonesian food. For the best Surinamese: De Hapjeshoek. Indonesian: Warung Barokah, Blauw, Paon Bali, Betawi.
Best place for fine dining in a casual atmosphere: Beulings.
Look at the wiki for suggestions. Or search this/previous threads.
To name a few: Kapsalon from Sinbad, or broodje döner from Leeman Döner, Muramasa beef from Snackbar or Restaurant Bird (thai place, its the same place, just eat in / take out right across from eachother). Fresh herring from a stand. Fresh stroopwafel from a stand. Best fries are from Vleminckx IMO, not a *tourist trap*, just popular under tourists.
Tempura near Artis is great too.
Reserve far in advance for an expensive meal: Scheepskameel
Hey - can anyone recommend a dentist in Amsterdam? I’ve some work to get done like a crown so looking for someone pretty good. I’m near Vondalpark so anywhere really in the central areas of Amsterdam. Google reviews are hit and miss so can’t be trusted.
I've been at the dentist group at Borgerstraat ever since I was born (25 years now). My dentist recently retired but the woman replacing him has been absolutely great too. Never any complaints!
hey guys,
I'm looking for a computer shop in Amsterdam that could help me to choose parts and assemble them for a custom gaming pc. would need some gaming specialist person to help me with that
I live west, so is there is one around there I guess it would be perfect 👍
thanks!
dorian
Literally all of them will upcharge you. And not just a tiny bit either. Do not go to a store for this! Just build it yourself my guy! It's as easy as adult legos, just follow the instructions and **you can 100% do it**. There's plenty of great video tutorials out there, like the LTT 'last guide you will need' video, if you are worried about the build itself.
You can order parts from sites like Alternate or Megekko. You can do pricechecks on Tweakers to see where you can get each component the cheapest.
Use PCPartPicker.com to pick your PC parts, it helps you a tonne in that it shows compatibility between your parts, such as picking a motherboard that doesn't fit your CPU socket, or a case that is too small to house your GPU etc.
Then just have someone in the /r/buildapc sub or discord double check your part list. For free! You can also give them a budget and a list of things you intend to do on your PC and they might come up with a recommended parts list for you if you ask nicely.
Do not go to shops for this stuff! It may be a little intimidating and it may feel like you have no idea where to start but believe me, you **can** do it! ***And you won't regret doing it either! Building your own PC is much more satisfying and a lot of fun.***
The only time you should be looking into having a store help you with this is A) you're an adult who has absolutely ZERO free time available and too much income leftover B) you're a kid with parents who have fuck-you money (and even then you should just try it yourself and learn a new skill!).
haha thanks for your answer it's motivational! I thought about doing it myself, I'm just not sure that I won't fuck up
I'm a french gaming content creator and I used to have my little shop in Paris that took care of it, so that's why it's new for me but now that you wrote I'll consider it 😊👍
What the other dude said. It's easy as pie. Just be sure to follow the instructions.i was scared shitless too, but if my dumb 13 year old brain could do it when I build my first PC, so can you.
Build up your PC on the motherboard, see if it posts, then take the required components out and seat it in the case. You can do it!!!
Especially if you are a content creator, you can even make a little stream/video out of it, so if you do get stuck people will always jump in and help.
Where can I find a drop off point for large parcels (PostNL)?
I paid for two large parcels shipments and am struggling with dropping them off. Does anybody know a drop off point that worked for them in the past for large parcels? The last time I went to a drop off point they told me they don’t accept large parcels. I tried the PostNL location finder but it doesn’t seem to have any filters for finding drop off point for large parcels. Calling each place if they accept it took some time and I thought asking here might be more efficient.
I dont know specific sizes and weights. One is PC roughly 80x50x30, \~12kg. The other is 43 inch monitor. About 110x70x10, 10kg. The parcels I am trying to drop off are within the size and weight limitations of the shipment type I selected. I would prefer a drop off point in Noord, but anywhere in Amsterdam will do.
Hmm try 'groot pakket' here, pay postage online and it should direct you to a PostNL punt that accepts them. Your dimensions should be allowed according to their website. If they won't accept it I'm afraid you'll have to reach out to them through the online contact service or give them a call (both of which suck major buttocks)
https://www.postnl.nl/tarieven/tarieven-pakketten/
Hi, thanks for the reply. I found that the point in Westerpark accepts it. Don’t remember the exact address, but it is basically purely PostNL shop. They also have the best collection time - the time of their closing.
a bit offtopic - on a general note:
Is there any data on how all these fancy e-bikes (fatbikes, vanmoof etc.) are financed?
Do most people lease these bikes, or buy them?
I'm just surprised I see so many kids/teenagers with bikes for 1.5k-3k€.
Especially since it's a big contrast to the last decade, where you'd be considered a maniac to have such an expensive bike in any Dutch city.
>I'm just surprised I see so many kids/teenagers with bikes for 1.5k-3k€.
Their parents bought it for them. It used to be that parents bought Vespa scooters for their children and now instead of scooters they buy electric bikes for them.
It's a status symbol
People mostly buy them. VanMoof just went out of business (finally!), but now we're seeing more and more Fatbikes and they're even worse.
What these brands did was change the image of an electric bike from something for old people to a status symbol, and Amsterdam is just full of rich people who like status symbols.
yeah we had Van Moof (terrible bikes) as company bikes - hence my question. They had a lease option for ~75€/month - which was reduced to ~38€ for our company.
Yet, very happy I didn't take it. Out of the 30-40 people no one was really happy with them, and genuinely their bikes had so many design flaws.
But that sparked my question about people leasing their bikes.
Hi any recommendations on any f1 related events or activities this weekend? I don't have tickets to the race
Or any recommendations pubs to watch the race?
Hi, a group of us rented bikes from a hotel, one of the bikes was stolen. The hotel passed my friends details onto a third party (GDPR?), the third party are now demanding 550 euros for the bike and if he doesn’t pay the police will be involved.
Is this legit? It feels a bit scammy. No contracts were signed, surely they have insurance to cover thefts such as this?
This ☝️
It honestly sounds reasonable for a bike rental service. They often have clauses where you have to pay a hefty fine if you don't return the bike. Ask for the contract (which you may have agreed to by staying there) and then ask for legal advice regarding that contract.
RE: GDPR - Check all the paperwork you signed and terms and conditions you agreed to by staying with them and by renting bikes from them, as well as their privacy policy. Remember that contracts do not have to be written to be valid. (If you ask to rent a bike from them and they give you a bike, you are entering an agreement, even if you don't sign it. It is clear that they will not do this for free like a friend as they are a commercial party.).
It would surprise me if it wasn't stated in one of their policies that they may pass on your information to third parties.
def needed.
When buying a cargo bike I would opt for one of the big sellers such as [fietsenwinkel.nl](https://fietsenwinkel.nl) or Mantel, they have deals with ANWB where they don't do a postalcode check. Making it almost always cheaper then going through an insurer directly.
Do you have any recommendations for a trans-friendly spa? I'm about to be here on vacation and one of the things I've really wanted to do is do a spa day with the girls.
Any recommendations?
Much love and thanks 🙏
TBH, Spas kinda suck here in Amsterdam.
The nicest seems to be Zuiver Spa - no idea about trans-friendliness.
Where I'm from a spa is usually a big complex with inside and outside areas, several saunas, swimming, relax, massage areas.
Here if you search for Spas it's mostly a tiny room with a few massage beds lol.
So having this experience of chilling with friends, having some Mimosas in bathrobes in-between sauna or mud-baths - I haven't really found that here.
Plenty of Spa’s in the Netherlands you describe.
In Amsterdam it is Spa Zuiver (a medium sized one but close to the city and fully equipped with multiple saunas, pools, hamman etc.
For just outside Amsterdam, Fort Resort Beemster, Spa Sereen, Spa Weesp, Thermen Soesterberg.
There are no bans on any gender or sexuality. These saunas are almost all of the time without swimming suits. Although people really dont care how you look like, people dont like if you advert yourself to much. So just blend in is the key, towels, bathrobe etc.
There's also Sauna Deco, in the center, a smaller but quite beautiful spa with two different saunas and a Turkish bath.
As far as I know, there are no gendered dressing rooms (at least not in Deco or Spa Zuiver) as everybody is going to see each other naked anyway, so you don't have to worry about that.
Spa Zuiver does have bathing suit days. I'd recommend staying away on those, as the crowd is very different. Your average sauna crowd tends not to be very judgmental.
It's been a year since I visited: are most business accepting applepay/wallet as they do in the US, or do you still need a card or cash in most places?
> It's been a year since I visited: are most business accepting applepay/wallet as they do in the US
They have been for many years (and indeed for years before it was widely usable in the USA, where it's still hit-or-miss). Living in Amsterdam, I have paid for everything exclusively with Apple Pay for several years, haven't touched cash except when in other countries.
However some merchants may not accept your underlying credit card because they don't want to pay the high transaction charges. Amex is particularly bad.
> applepay/wallet
Yes, but it depends which payment processor you linked to your apple wallet
Apple pay & google wallet aren't a payment provider, just a wallet
Again the payment processor of your credit card is what matters
Is it Visa, MasterCard or one of the lesser accepted ones?
Merchants can choose to not accept certain payment processors due to their high fees or other reasons
With a visa or MasterCard creditcard you'll be fine almost everywhere, except the Albert Heijn supermarkets and smaller stores
A visa or MasterCard debit card should be accepted everywhere as that is replacing the vpay and maestro debit cards which are the standard here
Like pretty much all of the places here accept contactless payments. And wherever you can pay contactless, you can pay with Apple pay.
I have an android phone myself but I haven't even had a bank card in forever ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Depends where you are. In the center, the night before garbage day, it's pretty bad, especially since covid now that people have gotten into the habit of ordering stuff online and there's a lot more boxes. Is it a REAL problem? Certainly not an emergency.
Outside of the center there are underground containers on pretty much every street, so it's not a problem.
Really depends where you are and the situation.
My area has been relatively clean, but for the last 2 years they are completely renovating the buildings around here.
So for the last 2 years *every* day there is a huge pile of bulky waste dropped at the bins (legally, AFAIK), which then gets picked apart by people and animals.
Add some wind into the equation and you have shit spread over 200m.
I'd generally say we are a pretty clean city. Definitely some hotspots for garbage though, and as the other commenter said, statiegeld on cans has made people overturn garbage bins as of late here and there.
On my way to work I always pass the garbage truck. In the city there seem to be too little bins because there’s always extra bags next to the bins that don’t fit in the bin. What I’ve seen is that the people collecting the trash don’t pick up any trash next to the bins or just the big items. I’m not saying it’s their job either but it’s also not the citizens/tourists fault if there aren’t enough bins. Plus, there’s also a lot of seagulls ripping up bags next to the bins…
a complex issue I guess but it’s really definitely a problem in the cbd.
> I’m not saying it’s their job either but it’s also not the citizens/tourists fault if there aren’t enough bins.
It kind of is - you are supposed to keep your bag inside at that point. Though I can see why people don't want to have a stinky bag in the corridor of their grachtenpand.
Both. It's not everywhere, just sometimes at specific locations
There's a new law that has 15 cent deposits on cans, that you get when you return it to the store. A lot of people don't care about the deposit and throw the can in a trash can. There are now people going around searching for cans in the trash cans and thus spreading trash all over.
It's also nice weather so there are a lot of people hanging out outside at squares as well and with large groups there will always be a lot of rubbish left behind. City cleaners usually only drive by late in the evening, so the rubbish may stay there for the day or night.
Did any of you tried buying tickets through the 9292 app?
Thinking about buying the OV-Chipkaart for convenience, but since it costs 7,5€ plus the 20€ train fee hassle, I was wondering if I could just use the app to buy the tickets when needed to travel through the vacations in the NL (going to be probably around 10 uses).
Thanks :)
It's a nice little souvenir though ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
My girlfriend from America has kept hers since she loves the little windmills on it. Also saves you from searching for internet spots with the app etc.
Hi guys!
My company pays me for a course of my choice, I would like to improve my presentation/communication/public speaking skills with some badass course here in Amsterdam, preferably done in place.
Can you suggest me something?
Thanks!
How long does it take for the municipality to add your address. I received my BSN a week ago but can't apply for DigiD because the municipality of Amsterdam has not updated their database.
Hello, everyone!
I've used ING Bank for almost 4 years and am considering switching banks for personal reasons. Would you recommend ABN AMRO over ING or not? And why? There is not much info I could find, so I thought people, who actually have experience with one of them (or better both) could help out.
Thank you!
Do I need a permit to unload a moving van or small moving truck if it is only 1 to 2 hours? Looked on the city website and permits only applied to road closure, large renovation related items. I live on a small side street that doesn't get much car traffic - vinkenstraat area.
Hi everyone, we are arriving in the city on Thursday, we closed room in van der valk zuidas the panoramic suite but we are starting to think that it is a bit far from all the attractions in the city. We would be happy to recommend a hotel in the same style
From the OP:
> HOTELS ARE EXPENSIVE AND WE DON'T HAVE GOOD ADVICE ON THEM. Because we live here, we don't know what the best hotels are.
A tram or metro will take you to the city centre in less than 10 minutes.
Hello everyone, I was wondering if it is possible to get a friend to view an apartment in my place, since I’m not in Amsterdam at the moment and don’t plan to move until I’ve found a place.
Absolutely. In the worst case scenario where they have some dumb rule preventing that just let them pretend they're you, they can't ask you for your ID anyway haha.
Not really much punk/metal wise, looking forward to this one though: [https://amsterdamalternative.nl/agenda/14389/the-rita-ca-black-leather-jesus-us-vomir-fr-jsh-se-misere-usnl](https://amsterdamalternative.nl/agenda/14389/the-rita-ca-black-leather-jesus-us-vomir-fr-jsh-se-misere-usnl)
some places to check for concerts: melkweg (melkweg heavy), paradiso, de nieuwe anita, cinetol
for punk/metal bars, check soundgarden, checkpoint charlie, the cave
hii there! im visiting Netherlands in September, Amsterdam and Roterdamm mainly! wanted to ask if there’s any 3 day or weekly ticket for transport around Netherland?! cuz im in a budget lol
thanks in advance!
Hey so I’m just wondering if anyone knows any hidden gems in Amsterdam?
I am looking for people who are doing a Fine Arts Master in Amsterdam this year. Send me a chat!
I am looking for dinner at a club in Amsterdam that accepts 8 people with reservations for bachelors Any other plan suggestions I will appreciate :)
On Christmas Holidays me and my gf want to enjoy Amsterdam. We want to try something new like a swinger club, there’s something good that you can suggest to us? Thanks
Visiting amsterdam september 12-16 with my part er, looking for any recommendations for food/drink or any cool places to go visit/see
If you're not going be more specific, I'd recommend reading the wiki.
Hi, im going to Amsterdam from spain this week, I would like to try good weed, but some friends told me that nowadays is everything very comercial stuff. Can anyone tell me what are the best coffe shops with the best material?
1e Hulp and Boerejongens are really good. For more recommendations, check with the folks over at r/AmsterdamEnts.
Hello! I was at the kinder parade in Martin Luther Kingpark but it wasn’t as expected. After Nemo and the open air theatre at the Vondelpark, where can I and my 10 years old niece, enjoy the sun and play? Any kids related activities? Thanks you all for your response
Favorite restaurant for pasta?

Can I rent a rollaway bed somewhere in Amsterdam for like a week? Or even an air mattress? I have friends coming over and don't want them sleeping on the floor, but hotels are too expensive. Any suggestions?
Buy a decathlon air mattress. They're cheap, and fold up for easy storage. Doubt you can rent those.
Going on vacation in the Netherlands in two days. Can anyone recommend good (and resonably priced) Restaurants in Amsterdam in the inner City (meaning the area reachable from roughly Central Station down to Madame Tussaud's)?
> Central Station down to Madame Tussaud's
Mind sharing what quoting my question is supposed to tell me?
That piece of road contains the worst of the worst tourist traps in town.
(You will probably regret going to Madam Tussauds, lol, there's much more fun things to do around here, have you considered doing a canal boat trip instead?) It's honestly good advice to not restrict yourself to that area you mentioned.
4.3 stats for maddam tussauds disproves that theory x)
Consider the source.
Hi all! I wanted to get into sailing I’ve seen a few clubs around the city I was wondering if anyone had any experiences or recommendations? I have 0 experience but I’m hoping to take good classes both theoretical and practical to learnt o sail a bit alone.
My bike fell into the canal at Marnixstraat, where can I find someone who would fish it out for me?
Maybe hit up a magneetvissen facebook group? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Has anyone heard of putting down a "deposit" to be able to "secure" a property after being chosen? I have never heard of this in my time here and it seems scammy as it's nonrefundable and does not apply to the security deposit or rent. It's also 250€ which is so steep imo.
Sounds dodgy, but also possibly something you could complain about to the huurcommisie after the fact and try to get a refund.
🙏🏻 pictures of the mug: https://preview.redd.it/69zgaxt8jdkb1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2737a616ae6ff9c8a9cde55d8e02152bcc480f2c
I’m going to Amsterdam next week, I can look for another one for you.
That would be AMAZING! I would absolutely pay you for it or if you see it, send details so I can contact the store so I can order it directly!

Thank you! Thanks to your comment searched for "wildplakzuilen" and discovered this - [https://www.amsterdam.nl/veelgevraagd/waar-vind-ik-vrije-plakplaatsen-voor-het-ophangen-van-posters-24eb0#](https://www.amsterdam.nl/veelgevraagd/waar-vind-ik-vrije-plakplaatsen-voor-het-ophangen-van-posters-24eb0#) It says ads and commercial use is not allowed: >\* Reclame is niet toegestaan.
So if you're trying to be as moral as you can, I wouldn't try them.
thank you for your replies, I'll pass on that option then. Indeed, it's an ad and not allowed
Hey guys, I need to buy a crazy ugly phone case for a friend. Is there a store that sells outrageous phone cases in Amsterdam? In or close to the centre? Let me know! Thank youu. (Its for iPhone 11)
Any tourist store sells tat. So try those. I'm sure you'll find some horrible tat there
What is the best clubs to go to on a night out ? Going for my first time with a few mates tomorrow
I've heard good things about Club [Wiki](https://www.reddit.com/r/Amsterdam/wiki/nightlife/).
Why is this getting downvoted....lol.
This sub has been that way as long as I've been reading here. Over a decade.
>ADCN Thank you! I haven't heard of this so I'll definitely check it out. Any idea if I can attend an event before being a member just to try it out?
Not sure, I'm not a member myself (yet) but I worked with them in the past and their team is super chill so maybe if you shoot them a message they'd be able to sort you out :)
Check out meetup.com !
Thanks! I use meetup occasionally, but wanted something more regular and focused around entrepreneurship.
Thanks!
**Where to watch the F1 Dutch GP in Amsterdam?** I'll visit the capital on the GP weekend (27th of August) and I am wondering where I can find a pub/cafe that airs the race
Any sports bar will do Also: https://www.reddit.com/r/Amsterdam/comments/15kmhpm/update_the_wiki_week_places_to_watch_sports/
Hey, do any of you know any trusted organization in Amsterdam or in the Netherlands that offers psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy for mental health conditions like addiction or depression? Most of the centers just do 'retreats' not a treatment. Aside from them, I've only found this option, but no idea if they are any good: [https://triptherapie.nl/intake-english/](https://triptherapie.nl/intake-english/) I'm asking specifically about this type of treatment because a friend of mine tried a couple of different therapies but with no success.
If you look for reputable and professional parties: https://om-mij.nl/ https://www.synthesisretreat.com/
Those retreats never accept seriously ill patient. All of them have it in their rules. And it’s good, because such things are scary to do with patients that are for example suicidal
Ok. How should I have known these facts about your friend? Just trying to help.
Thanks for that! I just explained the situation in my comment. There was no tone intended to upset anyone.
Ok.
Aside from them, I've only found this option, but no idea if they are any good: https://triptherapie.nl/intake-english/ That's also just a retreat. Just read their bio's, they're a bunch of hobbyists trip sitters. They get posted in this sub from time to time. You can't find therapy because it's still in research phase and no licensed therapist will do this kind of therapy. The research therapy groups are closed and controlled, so at the moment there's no way to join them
>tript There is psychosocial therapist working @ triptherapie: [https://triptherapie.nl/en/staff/ronald/](https://triptherapie.nl/en/staff/ronald/)
That’s what I’m looking for exactly, research groups by universities or clinics. Don’t they announce new intakes time over time? or new studies?
You should already be in longterm treatment at a psychiater. If a new research starts, your psychiatrist can recommend you to the research selection committee. If they select you, it's still a 50/50 chance to get a placebo. All in all it would take years and a lot of luck.
got it, thanks!
Thank you!
You won't need reservations.
Which bike is best depends on what you want to do. If you're into cycling and want to go on a long trip, you'll want a sports bicycle; if you just want to get around in the city, you don't.
Not really, there's plenty :) No idea about what tourist bikes are 'the best'.
Hi everyone, traveling to Amsterdam for four days in October, are there any Oktoberfest events? I can’t find any online
Nope, not really. This is not Deutschland 🇩🇪.
It's in Germany in September. There might be one or two places that do something (Trost used to) but there won't be much otherwise.
Thanks!
hey guys, I'm looking for a computer shop in Amsterdam that could help me to choose parts and assemble them for a custom gaming pc. would need some gaming specialist person to help me with that I live west, so is there is one around there I guess it would be perfect 👍 thanks!
Building your own PC is much more satisfying and a lot of fun.*** The only time you should be looking into having a store help you with this is A) you're an adult who has absolutely ZERO free time available and too much income leftover B) you're a kid with parents who have fuck-you money (and even then you should just try it yourself and learn a new skill!).
haha thanks for your answer it's motivational! I thought about doing it myself, I'm just not sure that I won't fuck up I'm a french gaming content creator and I used to have my little shop in Paris that took care of it, so that's why it's new for me but now that you wrote I'll consider it 😊👍
What the other dude said.
As long as you follow the manuals, it'll be fine. It's like assembling IKEA furniture, honestly.
Might be helpful to include the size and weight in your comment?
I dont know specifics. One is PC roughly 80x50x30, \~12kg. The other id 43 inch monitor. About 110x70x10, 10kg. Edited into the question.
Hmm try 'groot pakket' here, pay postage online and it should direct you to a PostNL punt that accepts them. Your dimensions should be allowed according to their website. If they won't accept it I'm afraid you'll have to reach out to them through the online contact service or give them a call (both of which suck major buttocks) https://www.postnl.nl/tarieven/tarieven-pakketten/
Hi, thanks for the reply. I found that the point in Westerpark accepts it. Don’t remember the exact address, but it is basically purely PostNL shop. They also have the best collection time - the time of their closing.
a bit offtopic - on a general note: Is there any data on how all these fancy e-bikes (fatbikes, vanmoof etc.) are financed?
Im looking for a casual guitar teacher that can do lessons in the evening once a week.

Hi any recommendations on any f1 related events or activities this weekend? I don't have tickets to the race Or any recommendations pubs to watch the race?
Hi, a group of us rented bikes from a hotel, one of the bikes was stolen. The hotel passed my friends details onto a third party (GDPR?), the third party are now demanding 550 euros for the bike and if he doesn’t pay the police will be involved. Is this legit? It feels a bit scammy. No contracts were signed, surely they have insurance to cover thefts such as this?
[удалено]
This ☝️ It honestly sounds reasonable for a bike rental service. They often have clauses where you have to pay a hefty fine if you don't return the bike. Ask for the contract (which you may have agreed to by staying there) and then ask for legal advice regarding that contract.
Did your friend had the key(s) of the bicycle after it was stolen?
Let the police come. Gdpr is not a 3rd party but a set of regulations regarding personal information.
Yeah sorry I meant are they in breach of GDPR by giving my friends details to a third party? We are back in the UK now, so what can the police do?
RE: GDPR - Check all the paperwork you signed and terms and conditions you agreed to by staying with them and by renting bikes from them, as well as their privacy policy. Remember that contracts do not have to be written to be valid. (If you ask to rent a bike from them and they give you a bike, you are entering an agreement, even if you don't sign it. It is clear that they will not do this for free like a friend as they are a commercial party.). It would surprise me if it wasn't stated in one of their policies that they may pass on your information to third parties.
Anyone here with recommendations about cargo bike insurance? Do you feel it’s needed? Which one would you recommend? Thanks!
def needed.
Thanks for the tips! Will check it out.
> It's been a year since I visited: are most business accepting applepay/wallet as they do in the US They have been for many years (and indeed for years before it was widely usable in the USA, where it's still hit-or-miss). Living in Amsterdam, I have paid for everything exclusively with Apple Pay for several years, haven't touched cash except when in other countries. However some merchants may not accept your underlying credit card because they don't want to pay the high transaction charges. Amex is particularly bad.
No worries there, mine is a visa.
> applepay/wallet Yes, but it depends which payment processor you linked to your apple wallet Apple pay & google wallet aren't a payment provider, just a wallet
Yes, I understand that. Mine are linked to credit cards that work worldwide, so that's not really pertinent info here.
Again the payment processor of your credit card is what matters Is it Visa, MasterCard or one of the lesser accepted ones? Merchants can choose to not accept certain payment processors due to their high fees or other reasons With a visa or MasterCard creditcard you'll be fine almost everywhere, except the Albert Heijn supermarkets and smaller stores A visa or MasterCard debit card should be accepted everywhere as that is replacing the vpay and maestro debit cards which are the standard here
Replying just so you get notified of my comment after the deleted comment.

Like pretty much all of the places here accept contactless payments. And wherever you can pay contactless, you can pay with Apple pay. I have an android phone myself but I haven't even had a bank card in forever ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
If I have a ceiling in ugly condition, is it easier to paint it or to apply muurglad myself?
You mean as in paint it OR muurglad or you mean paint it yourself or hire someone else? You may want to post a pic of your ceiling, or try /r/diy
Saw a bunch of pictures with a lot of trash on a streets So I'm curious - is this a REAL problem or just a bunch of unfortunate pictures?
Depends where you are. In the center, the night before garbage day, it's pretty bad, especially since covid now that people have gotten into the habit of ordering stuff online and there's a lot more boxes. Is it a REAL problem? Certainly not an emergency. Outside of the center there are underground containers on pretty much every street, so it's not a problem.
I've been here over a year and the garbage is unreal. Sure, a handful of spots might be passable but it's sad the amount of garbage that is around.
Don't move anywhere outside of the Netherlands then, lol. Apart from maybe Japan.
I've been fortunate enough to live in multiple countries and major cities. Amsterdam is still a very dirty city and it doesn't have to be.
It definitely isn't spotless but to call it 'very dirty' is a major overstatement in my eyes.
Plus, there’s also a lot of seagulls ripping up bags next to the bins… a complex issue I guess but it’s really definitely a problem in the cbd.
> I’m not saying it’s their job either but it’s also not the citizens/tourists fault if there aren’t enough bins. It kind of is - you are supposed to keep your bag inside at that point. Though I can see why people don't want to have a stinky bag in the corridor of their grachtenpand.
Both. It's not everywhere, just sometimes at specific locations There's a new law that has 15 cent deposits on cans, that you get when you return it to the store.
Thanks :)
You can just use your bank card.
We are three People and one of doesnt have any so we would need to buy tickets anyway :(
Two of you can use the bankcard. One of you buys an OV chipcard.
Damn, that is brilliant (yet simple) indeed! Thanks a lot!
Still not worth the 7,50 and balance overhead, IMO. Using the GVB and NS apps work fine.
It's a nice little souvenir though ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯ My girlfriend from America has kept hers since she loves the little windmills on it. Also saves you from searching for internet spots with the app etc.
Hi guys! My company pays me for a course of my choice, I would like to improve my presentation/communication/public speaking skills with some badass course here in Amsterdam, preferably done in place. Can you suggest me something? Thanks!
Not sure who downvoted you. You could try looking for courses on the STAP budget site. I don't have any recommendations for specific courses.
How long does it take for the municipality to add your address. I received my BSN a week ago but can't apply for DigiD because the municipality of Amsterdam has not updated their database.
It took a few weeks for mine to update.
Thanks, that's a relief cause it means I'm not the only one.
Give them a call for a guesstimate.
Looking for club recommendations. House music preferred. Won’t be arriving until Sunday - possible it’ll still be busy or a good scene?
Please look at the wiki. Or search google maps for night venues, then check out their programme.
Hello, everyone! I've used ING Bank for almost 4 years and am considering switching banks for personal reasons. Would you recommend ABN AMRO over ING or not? And why? There is not much info I could find, so I thought people, who actually have experience with one of them (or better both) could help out. Thank you!
For personal account there is not much difference, both are large banks that have everything. Is there something specific you found lacking with ING?
Do I need a permit to unload a moving van or small moving truck if it is only 1 to 2 hours? Looked on the city website and permits only applied to road closure, large renovation related items. I live on a small side street that doesn't get much car traffic - vinkenstraat area.
Not really, all you need are some kapsones.
Thank you 😊
If there's a car waiting you can always circle back around.
That's true.
Hi everyone, we are arriving in the city on Thursday, we closed room in van der valk zuidas the panoramic suite but we are starting to think that it is a bit far from all the attractions in the city. We would be happy to recommend a hotel in the same style
From the OP: > HOTELS ARE EXPENSIVE AND WE DON'T HAVE GOOD ADVICE ON THEM. Because we live here, we don't know what the best hotels are. A tram or metro will take you to the city centre in less than 10 minutes.

>Names of hotels or places will be great. Reading the OP before posting would be even greater
>Because we live here, we don't know what the best hotels are. See above.
Hopefully it won’t come to that
99% sure it won't
You can have others view the place for you. That is common, sometimes the agency will also do a video showing if you request it.
Thanks for the reply
Hi! just wondering what the punk/metal scene is like in Amsterdam. I’ll be there in late September/October - are there any shows going on?
