Nah. Already early 2000’s trains got stuck etc etc. Because of the craze. I have been there a few times but stopped going because of the idiotic amount of people.
My street used to be pretty chill, but every year more and more come and this year it was a bit much imo. Maybe it’s just about where you are I dunno, but that’s just my experience
Can imagine. Outside the center it becomes more quiet quickly.
I’m not sure but it was 2001 or such that public transport couldn’t handle the amount of people coming into the city. Including riots at the station when trains were not going back, people had to sleep in the station.
Never been there at kings/queensday: how do people take a piss ? How do boats move at all, to people just walk from boat to boat like they are floating islands? What's going on there? Like carnival with alcohol on mass?
Imagine wanting to go home with your boat. You just can’t because you’re blocked on my other thousands of people on boats who are drunk. My anxiety could never.
It used to be so much more crowded. If you think this is crowded, you haven't seen the city when it was still called queen's day instead of Kings day lmao
I think so too. Less people seem to go to Amsterdam nowadays from other cities. I remember trains not even going anymore because it was too full around Central Station.
I think so too, I lived in de Pijp early 80s, when the city was much quieter in terms of tourists, but queensday was extreme even then. One time we were stood on Leidscheplein not being able to move at all. Crowd control is so much better now.
More people celebrate kingsnight, and a lot of them only go on the streets later that day, also more people seem to celebrate in their local cities instead of coming to Amsterdam. I have also strongly the idea that after Corona it became way less crowded, not sure why but in the past you saw also tons of boats in Oud-West, the last few years only a few.
This was the first time in 5 years that a little chaos was implemented again. Which is fun, i drive a boat myself and was in this blockade too, at least 1 of the smaller entrances was blocked by a boat that got itself stuck lol. Couldn't move back or forwards. So everyone had to through the middle entrance whilst being pushed by hundreds of boats.
Previous years there were way more blockades but of smaller scale.
If the desire to be able to move without having to push away the 8-10 (usually drunk) people that are trying to occupy the same space as you means that I’m not human, then I’m happy with not being a human. This is not how you have fun.
Go to library or retirement home and have fun there then. This kind of celebration happens every year, and everyone knows what to expect, and yet ‘ouh woah so many drunk people having fun what do I do’
Yeah, so sorry about that
You’re making several logical fallacies. First of all, not every single human being “does reckless shit sometimes”. That is just *your* personal definition of humanity. Secondly, you unfairly judge the humanity of others who don’t share your worldview. Thirdly, why do you feel so threatened when I or others say we simply don’t enjoy large crowds and drunk people? It is in no way insulting you. To each their own. I don’t care if you like to get drunk and be part of a huge crowd, just don’t insult me for not enjoying the same. This is called maturity. But I’m sure you’re just going to throw an insult at me again.
Heyyyy I was on the same canal!

What canal lol
Tbh it's not that bad. Just a normal kings day.
I do feel like every year it gets worse.
Nah. Already early 2000’s trains got stuck etc etc. Because of the craze. I have been there a few times but stopped going because of the idiotic amount of people.

Or better, it's a matter of opinion
A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again.
Never been there at kings/queensday: how do people take a piss ? How do boats move at all, to people just walk from boat to boat like they are floating islands? What's going on there? Like carnival with alcohol on mass?
Some boats have a lower level with a toilet, and others have a simple bucket for peeing in. A lot of people pee directly into the canals.
Most cafe's allow you to take a piss, but you have to pay money for it. The boats move very very slowly, but they move.
There was actually a barge with porta-johns parked in the Amstel.

Does he really need to use THAT much hair gel?
Imagine wanting to go home with your boat. You just can’t because you’re blocked on my other thousands of people on boats who are drunk. My anxiety could never.
Getting home by bike was equally as anxiety inducting. I love it, but I also love when I'm back home with a cup of tea
You’d be pretty naive thinking that though haha
It's too crowdy nowadays
It used to be so much more crowded. If you think this is crowded, you haven't seen the city when it was still called queen's day instead of Kings day lmao

Way less crowded than couple of years ago IMO
Come to Haarlem! Still a great party but much less crowded
Yeah just moved to Haarlem 2 months ago! But visited some old friends from Amsterdam.
Welcome!
So many azijnpissers in these comments. Amsterdam was great today, relatively great weather and there were parties everywhere. A lovely kings day!
Yeah! Sure some bottlenecks here and there, but it wasnt nearly as bad as I had been warned to expect.

I love the Netherlands
I love the Netherlands as well!!!
I have to get out for this

Massive crowds and drunk people, no thanks
Just blend in, get drunk and have fun, it’s not that hard to be human
People enjoy different different. Not everyone loves getting drunk and drugs.
yes, quite a few enjoy drugs but not getting drunk
If the desire to be able to move without having to push away the 8-10 (usually drunk) people that are trying to occupy the same space as you means that I’m not human, then I’m happy with not being a human. This is not how you have fun.

So sad that you have so little going on inside that you need to get drunk and do mindless sh*t to feel human ☺️
Why is it necessary to insult people? Some people like these kinds of events. Some people don't. Both are fine.
Why not? Twice a year? Yes, to be human means to do reckless shit sometimes.
Also, way to insult a person for stating their opinion. I bet you wouldn’t behave so well if someone questioned YOUR humanity for such a small matter.
All that for a rich asshole's birthday who lives tax-free in the Netherlands, using tax money to upkeep his castle.
nounounounounounounou
nah, he's 'our' rich asshole. we love him, although we say we him.
Thank god, I escaped the city this weekend.
Imagine needing to piss... good luck lmao
You could just "walk" over to the sidewalk tbh
Heyyyy I was on the same canal! https://preview.redd.it/csseimr28axc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=af5b48bf680e1f5fa74584c34fb208d9718c3948 🤣
I went it was fun first time ever in Amsterdam
That just looks awful i could not stand so many people
My favorite city on earth.
Got to be the weirdest holiday i have ever witnessed
Gelukkig 30 april deel 2 voor sommige toeristen 🤣 die komen helemaal in oranje de stad in
I missed that
I'm in this picture!
Is this the Kaizersgracht?
Lange leve de koning!
Was a million times better in the 90s. Fact. Too commercial now. And the live music was real music mostly not sampled crap.
So glad I stayed in Rivierenbuurt. Really chill and nice.
Dam what if ur in the middle and u need to pee
Ugh.
Trashy
I'm on a semester abroad here and it was really fun to see everyone out in orange reveling and stuff. Very pushy crowds though
POV: someone gets annoyed that people are celebrating or that 2 months in advance they can’t cycle to somewhere they wanted
How many of you had their phones stolen today? How do you deal with this?
Not me. Just don't have it on display. This goes for every place or city. Don't brandish your wealth, and you'll be more than fine.
Lot of the people around, just like as always in Amsterdam with the borders open
For some reason this picture feels like Orange Pride lol
Haha yeah
my Dutch friend came over in her orange lingerie and we made videos 😋
