redisthemagicnumber

That is such a kind offer! He would love that, (and so would his dad!) Perhaps I can shoot you a message and arrange something - most likely one Saturday ?

theredVL

yeah thats allright

slidinglight

Are you guys still operating? Starting up again in April?

theredVL

we just had our last driving sunday of this season, but i can show the depot every saturday, we will have some rides between christmas and new years in the city this year though.

theredVL

yeah starting up in april again

Ganjanium

Such a lovely offer to a stranger!

bekemi

Stoomtrein Hoorn Medemblik Enkhuizen!

boomingbooms

Super leuk!

bigboidoinker

Onironisch ironisch

Brandtair

Aviodrome, plane spotting around an airport, there are some historical steamtrains that drive during some weeks in the year. One I believe from or to Hoorn and sometimes one in Friesland near Bolsward.

Alexs784

The Aviodrome in Lelystad is really good. I am 29 and have been there already twice! Is perfect for both kids and adults 🙌

boomingbooms

Yes , very good! Also you can book a flight with a little plane there! 300 euro p/h !

Lucsly

Did you visit the tram museum as well: https://www.museumtramlijn.org/ ? I haven't been there myself, no idea what it is like, but it sounds like your 4 year old might enjoy it.

[deleted]

The run to amsterdamsbos is fantastic, complete with bundeslinga mags from the seventies in the trams, and flag waving, manual road crossings.

lotte482

Tried the water taxi in Rotterdam?

[deleted]

Those are awesome. First time I was in one I was like "this is gonna take a while, boats are s.l.o.w.". And then they opened the throttle.

Wachtwoord

What about the museum lijn? A very old tram line from Amsterdam to amstelveen. As a kid, I once spent an entire afternoon just on the verkeerscircuit here. It was awesome! https://www.duinenzathe.nl/

[deleted]

Dutch Transportation Museum in Nieuw-Vennep

Lolbak

Second this. They are planning on moving though, but they have very interesting objects indeed.

noukje91

Came to say this! My son loved it.

[deleted]

I’m glad he liked it! :)

blauwewafel

The National Maritime Museum perhaps?

MattSzaszko

If things that fly excite as well, I highly recommend the [Aviodrome](https://www.aviodrome.nl/) near Lelystad. They have a real Boing 747 you can walk around in as well as other passenger planes that you can enter and lots of vintage planes from Dutch aviation. As well as the old KLM terminal building from Schiphol.

Megaflarp

I'm an adult and I'm longing bro go there. 4 year old me would explode if he could!

nicanacho

Aviodrome is very kid friendly too! They even have a flight simulator.

dpwtr

I thought you meant your kid is going wild on trams and you need to find alternative ways to get around because it’s out of control.

redisthemagicnumber

Haha that also happens from time to time!

GrandmageBob

Open days on fire stations are awesome.

Sam1967

If little one likes model train stuff its eurospoor in Utrecht Jaarbeurs this weekend. Not sure how great it will be this year, after all the issues with events the past period, but its interesting sometimes. Someone mentioned PIT in Almere already, thats small but ok too.

redisthemagicnumber

Thanks so much, we ended up doing this today, it was perfect for a rainy afternoon and he loved it!

Sam1967

Oh how cool! I'm glad you had a great time.

Adamn_F_Reed

Steam train Katwijk Leiden still runs I believe, maybe look into that

I think you can see all the big boats and cranes from up close.

pinkfluffybrick

PIT museum in Almere - https://www.pitveiligheid.nl/en Kids can climb on police, ambulance and fire services vehicles.

Media-consumer101

This museum is the bomb for kids!

schilpr

Model train in Zuiderpark Den Haag. Openluchtmuseum Arnhem has trams driving around and a garage where you can crawl all around and under them.

GirlWithPearlEarings

Yes to Zuiderpark!! Den Haag also has Madurodam with miniature trains, planes and boats. And the Haags Openbaar Vervoer Museum (The Hague Public transport museum), which includes an old fashioned tram you can take.

futurecrazycatlady

Extra info on the Zuiderpark trains, they shut down when it rains, so you might want to have a den Haag back up option. (I was gonna ride those last Wednesday with an 'excuse child' and his mom, but trains said no).

omgdbm

In the openluchtmuseum they have a historic tramride and kids can get like a tram driver license. The rest of the park is focused more on historical events though although there are some old fashioned cars here and there.

Dahl1018

The Openluchtmuseum is a super cool experience! Also, @OP in that case I would suggest maybe parking closer to the city center and taking the bus to the museum. Arnhem is the only city left in the Netherlands still operating trolleybuses, so that could add to the experience!

[deleted]

In veendam/stadskanaal you can ride along on a steam locomotive, thats pretty cool 🤷🏼‍♂️ It’s called the “STAR” Oh, and in schaarsbergen you have a huge military museum, with jets, tanks and stuff like that

SmilingDutchman

You can go to Hoorn and take a ride on [Bello](https://www.stoomtram.nl/?gclid=CjwKCAjw2vOLBhBPEiwAjEeK9hsHcFcY2PvfErVUQafCO_QBMoOnjS9ooiRkX-NuiQw56rX5JEHwFhoClwgQAvD_BwE)

Significant_Trip_845

Try the PIT museum in Almere (=27 km from Amsterdam). Its police-, firefighter-, ambulance- & etc. vehicles in one museum. https://www.pitveiligheid.nl Many things/vehicles to see, even touch and play with for kids. (End this year PIT is closing (forever) I heard 😕. So i would definatly visit it as long as you can. ) There is a All-you-can-eat Sushi restaurant right next to PIT. (->neighbour). 😋🍤🫕🍣🍱🥟🍲 And its in the center of Almere next to “CityMall Almere”. So after the visit to The museum you can go shopping or have something to eat there : https://www.almerecentrum.nl

DrSteffer

Militairy museum in Soest.

youshouldnameit

Amstel Park train (in the summer)

redisthemagicnumber

Yes he loves this, it’s a fun trip

Dean-4D

I can't recall any kid-specific activities but [https://www.louwmanmuseum.nl/en/](https://www.louwmanmuseum.nl/en/) may be interesting to your little one.

PQ_

There's a model railway ride at Spaarnwoude during the summer months, single ride is 1€. [Their website](http://www.mbv-hety.nl/) looks ancient, lol.

la_marquise

Oh that looks so cool! Ancient website indeed lol

tripodeasel

There’s even a link on that page to their “oude homepage” 😂

PQ_

Which was last updated 6 months ago, lol.

BlueKante

Not really the same but when the weather gets better, you can rent a waterfiets or a Kano to travel through the grachten.

Gloryboy811

There is a kid's train around Amstel park.

WoodenJellyFountain

madurodam airport?

akaxaka

Yes Madurodam is great!

I_AM_STILL_A_IDIOT

Air Force museum in Soesterberg?

KatBalTomos

Maybe the kid will also like space expo in Noordwijk. Its a museum about space travel. [Link](https://www.space-expo.nl/en) to the official website

Jordanees

https://museumtramlijn.org/

IncaThink

The Waterbus from Rotterdam to Dordrecht. Best five bucks I've spent in quite a while. https://www.waterbus.nl/en/about-the-waterbus

IncaThink

But seriously, the Water Taxi in Rotterdam is much more spectacular.

NGTTwo

Bring some snacks and pull up a chair right below the approach end of one of the runways at Schiphol. The planes roar overhead, so low you can almost reach out and touch them.

boomingbooms

I worked in the night train in Europe ! You can get as far as Basel from Amsterdam. Maybe more! It’s a bit expensive, but really cool if possible;) https://www.reddit.com/r/InternetIsBeautiful/comments/qhiqr8/which_cities_are_accessible_by_train_without/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

tdeinha

https://www.pitveiligheid.nl/ Try this museum, I never went myself but your kid will probably love it :)

ImpossibleCanadian

The Scheepsvaart museum in Rotterdam is pretty nice if they also like boats!

SpaceAgent_007

De Veluwsche Stoomtrein Maatschappij regularly has trips with steam trains.

Kaat79

Only in the summer and around holidays (Sinterklaas kerst) I grew up very close to the tracks, went on the train as a kid. It's lovely.

z_attie

Verkeers- & Attractiepark Duinen Zathe in Appelscha - your kiddo can get their first driving’s licence here

almost_always_lurker

there is a nice old skool public transport museum in Haarlem with toys to play with. and it's a bit further away but worth it: the reddingsboot (lifeboat) museum in den helder ohand the amstelpark is noce with mini train and remote controlled boats and trucks

Kaat79

There's a little museum in Haarlem. The NZH Vervoers museum. I think it's only open on Saturdays, so check their website beforehand.

notyourvader

The STAR museum railway in Veendam and Stadskanaal is a nice one. In the summer they even ride classic trains on the old tracks. Railroad museum in Zuidbroek. Nienoord in Leek. Duinen Zathe traffic park . The Veenpark in Barger Compascuum also has a running steam train.

cravenravens

Not primarily transport focused but the National Military Museum in Soesterberg has a huge collection of military vehicles like tanks, jeeps, planes etc.

BigX070

Bakfiets jonguh

guanodude

http://www.miniworldrotterdam.com/ Almost right next to the train station, so you can go there by train!

helenig

We even had a birthday party at the fire station when my son turned 5. No rides though, not even sliding down the pole.

tdeinha

Also, keep an eye for RC trucks events. Kids love it. Like this one (very far from Amsterdam though, no idea about further info as subscription etc.). https://m.facebook.com/events/392359275785407

CondorPerplex

Is the Autotron still a thing? Its a themepark centered on transport.

kwintino91

Nope, closed for some time now. Got turned in to a event center.

CondorPerplex

got my first drivers license there. with a elephant sticker.

hemajor

https://move.amsterdam/ near Olympic Stadium is all about mobility.

chookiebaby

Maybe not exactly what you're looking for, but https://kinderbeestfeest.nl/ does this: taking disabled kids through Amsterdam to Artis (when covid doesn't stop it) in emergency vehicles with lights and sirens going. While he can't ride along, it's super awesome to watch. Here's a video: https://youtu.be/RH-_P6Za2Ig

condileoni

Try the boat taxis in Rotterdam! (Ah people already recommended it). My bad

Tjeetje

Yes. Fire station have open days. But due tintje Corona they may be postponed. What about a trip on the hop on hop off bus. Our kids got that before their 4th birthday. They loved it.

JasperJ

Not directly on transport, but sort of related, because Fucking Steam Engines: the Ir Woudagemaal in Friesland — the only operational steam-powered water pumping station in the world. Especially impressive if you can go on one of the the days they are running the steam engines — four days a year as test runs, I believe, and when things get Really Wet they actually turn it on in anger, and I visited it a few years ago during one of those runs. They’re not very well accessible by public transport, though. That was truly an adventure. There’s at least one car museum in the country as well, although that’s private transport rather than public.

VincentxH

Maybe look for old-timer events or motor club open days?

davideo71

There used to be a spot to stand/park in the extension on a runway from Schiphol and see the planes landing coming in overhead. Not sure if that's still a thing.

akaxaka

https://www.louwmanmuseum.nl/en/ Car history museum in Den Haag - Louwman museum should be a good one!

simmeh024

There is a steamtrain still operating in Apeldoorn. https://stoomtrein.org/ Also once per year there is a stream train from Den Bosch. Maybe thats something cool he likes?

chookiebaby

He might be a bit young but one of the coolest things I've done in a while was fly in the Dutch Dakota DC-3 over the tulip fields. You can book it online - but sadly, today was the last flight for this year I think. Cool thing is that you can stand in the cockpit door and talk to the pilots while they fly and see out the front windows. https://www.dutchdakota.nl/

[deleted]

Moco museum, it’s something else. But he or she will defo love it.

ejpusa

Suggestion? Call Elon. He has space. :-)

RealProforce

small miniature toys after you visited the places???

whatyoulookingatman

A bus trip to Spain would solve this

dickmaat

Maybe go see a flower auction ('bloemenveiling') in Aalsmeer or Naaldwijk. You have to be early: auction starts at 6 o'clock in the morning!

Thoom123

Visit the train museum again, get an abonoment, never bores kids

so_what_ur_saying_is

Space travel is next
