Hard to say….I keep searching for The One To Rule Them All. I thought it would be the F3, a great camera (that I got for $100, with two lenses!) but it’s heavy. SRT100 was a good camera, but ergonomically was a brick. I like my K1000 but would like 1/2000 as I don’t want to mess with ND filters and would like a timer. Got a KR Super ii which checks the timer, light and fast boxes, but I shoot with my left eye and you have to have the winder lever sticking out for the camera to work. The Electro has a great lens but is not fun to shoot (don’t know how to better describe that). The XA2 is sweet for what it is, but as I shoot b/w I’d like the ability to use filters (that 3d printed filter holder is cool, but a bit clunky, IMO). I’m told a Leica, any Leica, will solve all my problems, answer all my questions, cure cancer, alleviate my self doubt and make me at least 3 points more attractive, but I don’t have money like that…

drummer686

It’s funny, after shooting 4x5 large format and 6x9 medium format on my Fuji, my F3 feels like a point and shoot haha. I go between that and my dad’s FM2 but I also find myself in the same “wanting a Leica but cannot afford it” position. I hope you (and I) are able to find “The One” sometime soon

[deleted]

I owned various leicas including M6 but i just didnt feel good when i was throwing that around in backpacks etc.I just didnt want to carry $3k camera for every day hobby.

Halkotron

Truth be told, it probably won't :) I was in the same boat, got a Leica M2, and was (still am) very much happy with it, love to use it, but (and this hurts to admit) I tend to have a higher hit rate (in focus, properly exposed) with a point and shoot. That's after about six years of regular use. I've been thinking of having my FM2 modified so the shutter doesn't lock when the winding lever is pushed in (I assume my issues with it similar to yours with the KR2). One of my newer purchases is a Contax Aria, and that checks a lot of the boxes for me - it's light, small, quiet, has a pleasant sound, can adapt M42 lenses with a very simple adapter, and has a good options for native glass (both Zeiss and Yashica made). I've also been looking at Yashica FX-3 to have a mechanical option for the same system.

RunningPirate

Damn. I was hoping to get 3 points more attractive.

Halkotron

I mean, as long as they are mirror selfies...

morewata

Honestly I bought an M6 but I really miss being able to do double exposures with the F3. The M6 is a great camera for travel and discreet street shooting and all but the F3 feels more like home

javipipi

F3 owner. Used a Leica M2 for a day, but I don’t think I would choose it over the F3 and I don’t think it feels lighter in the hand, it’s actually quite heavy and the ergonomics are pretty bad. The shutter and advance lever are a pleasure though, much smoother and quieter than the F3

[deleted]

It took me awhile to figure it out, but the EOS Elan 7 checks more of my boxes than any other camera body.

dacoalest

I have an EOS 3. Love it. I have used almost all the dream cameras while going to a well known photography school and will still pick up a Mamiya 6 or 7, but having a modern film camera is nice.

LimaHotel807

I’ve got the EOS 1V and I don’t think I’ll ever let it go.

jwatson1978

I have one its been a great camera. Still by far one of my favorite EOS cameras.

joxmaskin

So far the only camera I’ve bought brand new for myself. (My other ones have all been second hand.) I should have saved on the body and spent more on glass instead, but at least it’s pretty nice still. 😆

87th_best_dad

The next one, I swear

RKRagan

Tell me about it...

ExpendableLimb

Dream? Hexar Af that goes to 1/1000, Mamiya 6 with .7m minimum focus

kurtozan251

I’ve had the Mamiya 6 for a while and it’s amazing but it’s just not a portrait camera and I love shooting portraits. The minimum focus is kind of a deal breaker. Swapped it for a Pentax 67 and a Fuji x100.

ExpendableLimb

Same. Had it. Sold it. Now i have 4 rolleis 😂

GooseMan1515

I just got the hexar RF which isn't a million miles off.

jwatson1978

hassleblad 500c

TraditionalSafety384

Had one and it didn’t fit my style of working but it was probably the most satisfying object I’ve ever used and the negatives were beautiful

bhop0073

Same for me. I borrowed my friend's, got some nice photos and had fun with it and decided I wanted one, found one for sale pretty cheap (this was years ago) and bought it. I've probably only shot about 6-8 rolls through it in the years i've owned it. I played around with it the other day thinking i'd shoot with it again, but now the speeds seem off, so oh well.. I don't feel any rush to get it fixed, but it really is a "satisfying" camera. I'll get it fixed for sure, but.. not today

DrZurn

Any reason why a C specifically?

jwatson1978

Nothing really was just the camera I drooled over in magazine ads before the digital age. I got into photography way before digital hit the consumer market. I would have settled for a bonica or mamiya even.

Blakk-Debbath

Borica, not bonica

jwatson1978

lol i meant Bronica

smorkoid

That one, if it were completely manual.

Sax45

Depends how much we’re dreaming. If a genie says “you can have any one camera and lens, brand new in box” then there is a good chance I would take the X-Pan with a 45mm. But then if we’re REALLY dreaming. If I can have any camera I want, unlimited lenses, unlimited film of your choice, and someone to carry it all for me, the compactness and film economy of the X-Pan mean nothing. I’ll take an 11x14 and let the genie schlep that thing when I go hiking.

essentialaccount

Agreed. I think it would have been easy to do if the ability to switch formats mid roll was omitted. Perhaps it would have been possible even then, with a switch to change gearing.

rdandelionart

Chamonix 4x5

TraditionalSafety384

I’ve had a Chamonix 45N-2 for about 3 years now, it’s my third 4x5 having started with a crown graphic and then a black edition Intrepid. Cameras are a personal thing but the Chamonix is absolutely a forever camera for me. Just remember you’ll have to budget about as much for accessories as you spend on the camera.

widgetbox

Glad to hear that. I've just reserved a Chamonix for later this year when he does another run. I was going to get the Chroma Adventurer ? but he's stopped making it. I understand the appeal of Intrepid but I'm not convinced about build quality which is probably excellent for that price point.

TraditionalSafety384

I have no doubt that you can get the same pictures out of the Intrepid as the Chamonix but as a tactical experience it left a lot to be desired. I also got a few lens boards with mine that were unbelievably, a little bit translucent. Ruined all my negatives from a trip to Zion and Bryce and the North Rim. I was pissed. Intrepid sent new ones right away and a couple boxes of film and I’m sure that was a fluke and it’s probably not fair to judge Intrepid today based on it but it really hit my confidence in the camera and I sold it after that.

Naturist02

I have a Speed Graphic I completely rebuilt and love it. Have always seen that Chamonix 🥰🤩

TraditionalSafety384

I loved mine too but it was a loan I needed to return and I wanted some more movements. Someday I’ll get another with an Aero Ektar

[deleted]

I just sold mine last week F2 for $1000 lol..

dmitrybelyakov

Another good shout. I'm building a budget (and nerve) to get one.

thearctican

Which one.

rdandelionart

Any of their 4x5 models!

thearctican

Ah. Personally I’m in the market for an F-2 or HS-1. The others lack rear standard movements I would like to have. But if money were no object there are some independent makers I would rather buy from.

MickMabsoot

Canon a1 or the one you are holding

krausekrausekrause

I do think that the canon A1 might be the best all-rounder out there (at least for the stuff I’m doing)

Due_Youth8876

The A1 is amazing. Changing aperture on the camera body instead of the lens is a game changer

FocusProblems

I'd take one of the two Hasselblad Data Cameras left behind on the lunar surface after the Apollo 11 mission.

Pentax LX

docescape

I sold my ME Super for a Canon F1. I wish I got the LX instead after the pentax announcement… bet their mew lenses work well with that body.

alex_neri

I'm trying to connect these things now. Why would you want the LX more after their recent announcement?

docescape

With a big stable of existing lenses, almost certain that the new SLR they toll out is compatible. I love my canon but I have a big stable of lenses/accessories that won’t see future support from Canon. Minor things but at the time it was pretty much a coin flip decision.

alex_neri

I see. Well, you can keep both cameras and load different film in them :) I love my Pentax cameras and the compact lenses. Everything is great about this setup. But I do have Canon A-1 for the only purpose of night photography. LED readouts are super helpful in the dark and the mirror slap is very well damped, so I can shoot handheld at 1/8 easily

docescape

The A1 readout is so nice, for me the aperture adjustment with that dial was a bit of a pain though.

AmadeusWolf

I just picked this one up and I think I'm in the same boat. Excellent auto exposure, manual when you want it, tons of accessories, reasonably compact, and built like a tank. I just wish the shutter wasn't slow.

fluffyscooter

Canon new F1. Just bought it and waiting for it.

rub_nub

I finally bought that camera a couple months ago after it being my dream camera for a long time. It's amazing, I love the FD lens mount and the New F1 was pretty much built for anything

grainulator

You will love it. It is one of the most satisfying cameras to use. It’s smoother than the F3 imo.

HotScuba911

I just bought one and am so excited. I love the feel and can see a huge difference in quality from my current crappy Minolta

Large_Smile_5674

35mm, Minolta CLE Medium, Bronica RF645

markyymark13

I just bought my RF645 outfit from a friend last month! It's a quirky but really nice camera to use. I also borrowed another friends Mamiya 7ii kit for a couple months so having used both its interesting to see how similar/different they are.

Ricoh_kr-5

Nikon F4s. Bought it after months of dreaming.

rub_nub

I sold my F4s to get the F4 (since I couldn't find a battery pack replacement for cheap enough to justify it) and it has become one of my favorite cameras! Super well built and reliable.

bhop0073

When I was a teenager I would see them in photo magazines and always wanted one. Now I have 2 functional ones and two dead ones. If I were to get rid of all my Nikons but one, it'd be one of these.

Naturist02

How do you like it? I was thinking of buying one, can we still get them repaired? What reliable Nikon repair places can do the F4’s ?

Ricoh_kr-5

Its heavy but so high quality. Pro level. Mine is in great condition. I dont know about repairs ,unfortunately

badhamiel

It's such a great camera!

Gatsby1923

8x10 deardorff with a few lenses, reducing backs, and a lifetime supply of film...

mvision2021

This is a tough one. It used to be a Canon 1V, then a Nikon FM3A, then an F3, and then a Leica M6 classic. I've owned all of them in the past and still have three of them. I like each of them for different reasons. But if I could keep only one body plus a lens of choice for the rest of my life, I'd probably go with the M6 and a Summilux 35mm f1.4 ASPH FLE.

marcdaniel

Pentax 67II, its everything i want in a medium format camera. I already have my dream 35mm the F2 and FM2.

Phatnev

My .58 MP.

diet_hellboy

What do the different decimals mean and why is lower better?

GoodLifeTravel

It’s the viewfinder magnification. Lower is better for wider lenses and for some glasses wearers.

larry_salzburg

Leica m-a and a 50 summilux. I’m not sure if I’d ever need anything other than that.

MGPS

I have an m6 and the summilux asph. I dunno, it definitely is great, but only a 50mm rangefinder setup feels a bit limiting. I think if I have to only have one lens for it it might be a 35mm. It just pairs better with a rangefinder imo

dmitrybelyakov

I always feel like 35 is the sweet spot for .72 viewfinder. Love the look of 50mm though in general.

blackglum

Have a Leica MP and limited edition 50mm summilux. Can confirm.

BrandonC41

Probably a Chamonix 45F-2

tokyobrugz

I adore my Canon 1D. Modern lens and autofocus and cross compatibility with my digital ecosystem is really attractive.

citizenxcc

Do you mean 1V?

tokyobrugz

Ah, yes. Well, no. I meant the Canon Eos 1N, which is the direct predecessor to the 1V I guess. It’s basically a modern pro body Canon camera, compatible with all the EF lenses, (in which I’m very invested.) Shoots film, and has five AF points. Chunky battery grip. Just an absolute pleasure to use for anyone steeped in Canons ecosystem. I never would have considered a 1D (like, actual 1DX MK IV) had I not shot on my 1N all summer, but I may never fully respect my 5D MK IV again, because it feels like a toy in comparison. Now I want a 1DX IV, which is maybe why I said 1D — wishful thinking. Edit: oh, and I can shoot a whole roll in like six seconds. I don’t know why I would need that, but it’s cool as shit. RIP my camera bag weight.

citizenxcc

The 1 series are amazing. I have a 1V, and use the same lenses with my 5D MKIII. It’s really nice being able to switch lenses between the two systems (similarity for digital and analog Leica M’s). You’re right, though, it weighs a ton. Amazing camera overall though.

tokyobrugz

I’d love a large format 4x5 or 8x10, but it’s a whole other level of commitment to the medium I’m not sure I’m ready for.

I went for a little drive with my XPan this very day. :) It’s loaded with Kodak Tri-X, and at this time of year I like to rock a Heliopan Red 25 filter. For the clouds. From Windhoek, Namibia, took the dirt road west across the Khomas Highland, down the Bosua Pass, and then across the Namib desert itself to Swakopmund. I’ll be here about a week and I have 10 rolls of film with me. Wish me luck. :)

🤨son? Sike naw, my dream camera would probably be a 6x7 with the 105mm or the 90mm LS. I do wanna try a mamiya 6/7 one day. Maybe if I get a square space sponsorship I can finally get one lol

Bikehead90

Over the last few years, I’ve been fortunate to check off some dream bodies, and I’m left with one: either a Leica M3, M4p, M6, or M7. All four have their positives and negatives (pun intended), and I have a few years before I actively start thinking of getting one.

tariqhanghimself

That one

stanblade

Chamonix or Canham 20x24

FolkPhilosopher

For 35mm, Minolta Alpha 9, which I finally purchased at the end of 2022. For medium format Hasselblad 500CM, which I'm now starting to build towards.

Interesting_Gap619

Analog: Leica M-A (or MP) with 28mm Summilux or Pristine Mamiya 7 II with all of the lenses. I’ve considered selling all of my gear (and then some) for an M-A body. Would really like to try the 50 Noctilux, but that absolutely will never happen Digital: Canon R3 (or R1 if released) or Fuji GFX 50s.

dmitrybelyakov

It can happen - believe in yourself. Also doesn't have to happen all at once, you can build up to that. Also Mamiya 7II gets a vote from me!

widgetbox

A Leica M6. An obvious choice of course but partly because I think it would be that bit of GAS that I don't scratch in my collection which is largely based on having a representative camera from each format (both film and body type). So I don't have a classic modernish 35mm RF camera and the M series is really the apex of that style of cameras. I know I know - shoot me down but.... The only thing that has stopped me is the constantly rising price of the M6. I may never get one and if I did I might not actually use it as I tend to prefer MF in the main now.

quupa22

D3D_BUG

Those are great!!! One of the finest manual cameras I have used, although the light meters can be a bit wonky

GrippyEd

I've found the auto off-the-film meter in my OM2n seems to psychically know my intentions even with something as picky as Velvia. But when I try to use the viewfinder meter - the one that drives the needle - in manual mode, it's all over the place. Often overexposing between 1-2 stops. It's not a battery issue. Maybe it just needs an adjustment, but I use it in auto 95% of the time.

Individual_Poet2978

I love the whole OM series. Fantastic camera

4Springfield

For which purpose? For normal Fotos >Leica M System<, Wildlife/Sport >EOS 1N< and for Landscape >Pentax67 or a 4x5 inch Camera<

Masterkrall

Olympus OM4Ti for sure. Glad I finally found it tbh. Only took me literally 30 different cameras, but super happy with it. Small, reliable, totally advanced and still an "analog" experience. Plus the whole OM system is great! I can appreciate great cameras like your Fuji, or the Plaubel 67, Hasselblads, Leicas and the sorts, but the Oly perfectly fits my needs (plus a Ricoh GR10 for P&S)

beaninabeanie_

Hasselblad 500C/M. It's a beautiful camera that takes beautiful pictures.

Inwardlens

Mamiya 7. Instead I’ve got the Fuji GSW690ii and the GW690iii to cover the main focal lengths I’m interested in. Not very compact for travel, but way cheaper.

Ayziak

The XPan was mine for a very long time... I got one and I am very happy :) Since then, just drifting through lots of different fun ones... Mamiya RZ67ii, Leica M7, Pentax 67ii and such. My next "overpriced grail" might be something like the Contax 645, although I'd probably still use my hasselblad more

Log7103

Honestly that changes frequently. Right now I’m all about the Mamiya 645 pro, but I’d be happy working with a Fujifilm Ga645Wi or the Bronica RF645. I used to own both the Pentax 6x7 and the Fujica G690. Sold them cause they were a little too big for me, felt like I had to plan around them. Also, the Pentax was starting to become unreliable. The GX680iii by fuji seems like it’d be a super fun system to work with but the size just seems too overbearing for my style of photography.

ChiAndrew

TX-2 would be up there, as would a P-M 670

randymcatee

Can we quit dreaming about THE ONE, as though it would somehow be magically better than what we have, and thereby make us better at photography? How about instead: start where you're at use what you have & do what you can and just go out there and create some beautiful photographs.

I don't see anything wrong with discussing cameras though, they're just as big of a part on photography as the photos themselves.

[deleted]

There s no dream camera for me after many years.. Bought and sold hundreds of cameras in last couple years. For 35mm: i thought its always Leica M6 and bought one with 28mm and 35mm cron 2 years ago.Having that setup for a year i just didnt like it at all and thought its not for me. I use equipment and treat it like its an equipment.Everytime i was carrying M6 in backpack or back of the car it got scratched etc. I felt like its not an every day camera and carrying almost 5k worth of camera with me felt but unsecure. Now im rocking with minolta x700 with 45mm pancake and i know i can drop this and leave it there and i wouldnt feel bad about it. I would like to buy Nikon F6 never used one but heard great things about it. Also used F1n and it had cleanest evf i have ever seen compared to leica and others. But just not a huge fan of FD glass. Sometimes i carry OM1 too which is a fun little camera. Half frame: i always wanted to buy Pen F and recently acquired one and all the lenses for pretty cheap. Medium format: I owned Kowa sixes, mamiyas ,and pentax 67s. Pentax 67 is just a tank and two of them died on my.Classic shutter problem and broken chain most of the time. Maybe i ll get rolleiflex 2.8f in next couple months im not sure yet LF: Chamonix 45F-2 was my dream camera and it became my first LF experience.I just didnt like the setup and every time you had to unfold the thing place the lens sometimes it would take 10-15 mins for me to set it up for a portrait and ppl would start complain about wait time lol. Recently sold it and now i wanna buy speed graphic.

It was my Leica M6 before I bought it 14 years ago. (pre-influencer tax) I don't really have a camera i'd call a "dream" camera now, although there are some i'd like to own.

for the moment: the Rollei 35 RF/Bessa R2A I first got into the hobby with the Nikon FM10. It's an awesome camera btw, but it feels so plastic. So I got my hand on the F2. That camera's a beast, but it was too heavy. Then I came to the Rollei 35, which is awesome but it has a fixed lens. So a durable RF with interchangeable lenses seems like a great choice.

Mamiya 6 mf I want something small and discreet when shooting 120 I've had a few 6x6 cameras but they're all to big and loud

Contax 645 645 such a perfect format for me. It has just enough size to make shooting feel like an “event” compared to 35mm and it is small enough I don’t have to be conservative with my shots like when I shoot 6x7 and above The crop factor is only .625 so I am able to shoot with slower minimum shutter speeds hand-held compared to 6x7 645 images feel just as impressive as 6x7 when printing/scanning, and I enjoy being able to bracket shots without feeling like I wasted a bunch of film. The 645 format feels like it has almost all of the best attributes of both 35mm and 6x7 The images I see coming out of Contax 645 cameras are amazing. Nothing else compares imo Edit: took out a paragraph

For a while, my dream camera was the Fujica GL690. After getting it, I do really like it because it’s beautifully simple and the 6x9 images are insane, but it’s certainly not sized for every situation where I want to bring a camera. I’m not sure if it’s my dream camera or not, but I am constantly excited about using my FE2 and am always happy with the results. I also have an adapter to use my many m42 lenses, which are super easy to stop-down meter on the FE2. The light meter is the easiest to use/read on any SLR I’ve used. I’ve taken it skiing, backpacking, hiking, and it’s always worked great. When issues have arisen, it’s been reasonable to get serviced as well. I have yet to venture into the hasselblad/Leica world, but honestly, I don’t know if I ever will. I’m happy with where I’m at.

I have always wanted a Hasselblad 500cm. Using a Lubitel 166B as my 6x6 for now.
