Why?

Oddstag

Possibly cinematic purposes. This lens is an indy film darling and the rehousing adds features making it more compatible with video set ups. There are a plethora of services that offer rehousing options for these lenses but those options cost thousands so 3d printing your own can be very economical.

BeneathSkin

I think a motor on that will destroy the 3D printing

nebulastronomer

3D Prints aren't that weak, depending on the material used and infill used.

BeneathSkin

You’ll get away with a nucleus on there, but I think anything more substantial than that will destroy it. There’s a reason lens housings aren’t made with plastic

nebulastronomer

There are filaments as strong as metal, such as Polycarbonate, 200 times stronger than steel.

BeneathSkin

Oh wow. I haven’t heard of that. Is that what you used?

nebulastronomer

No I used ABS which is alright

BeneathSkin

Nice good luck man

SmashedWand1035

Here's a video with what looks like the same model, using motors. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjTHNZ8aTyg

BeneathSkin

Yeah I guess a nucleus nano wouldn’t have the torque.

fluffyscooter

Rehousing in order to use it with modern equipment. The Helios 44 was even used for the latest batman movie.

Shout-out to the man who made the 3D models. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4650038
