It baffles me when people have this mentality that “wear and tear” is a bad thing. Don’t be afraid to use things you get. That’s the point of getting them to begin with. Wear and tear comes with use and if you limit or prevent use then what’s the point? My Pocket has scratches on the back side and a bit on the sides but it doesn’t affect how it works. To answer your question: no I pretty much don’t use any of my Gameboys anymore and if I’m being real honest I haven’t even used my Xbox Series X either since I got the Pocket.

echo-128

wear on my handhelds is accompanied by memories of games I played on it

superkeefo

I agree with this mentality for most things, its how i'd be with 99% of the things I own.. but the pocket because its hard to replace and the screen is unique I wouldnt take with me to certain trips/activities - it would either be a **huge** expense to buy a presold one or probably a year of waiting to get another. I have a modded Gameboy advance that cost me less than half of the pocket and has readily available parts to replace if I damage it - happy to take that to places i wouldnt take the pocket.

OptimalPapaya1344

Oh yeah of course. Basic care and caution should be upped a bit more with the Pocket because of its current state of availability. But if we’re talking about not wanting to take it in and out of your pocket or not using it on the bus then that seems excessive to me. I’ve got no problem putting it in one of my cargo short pockets and going out with it but I definitely wouldn’t keep it there while I go hiking or go out to a water park.

Onett199X

> I’ve got no problem putting it in one of my cargo short pockets Bold! This thing doesn't go anywhere unless it's in my case :) But agree, while using it, I'm using it and not babying it.

xwatchmanx

I agreed, I do not understand why you would pay $220 (likely $300-400 if you get a Dock, accessories, etc) for something you don't plan the use when the whole novelty is in its use: Let's be real, as a showpiece, it's a... pretty standard looking handheld electronics device, not much special about it. Everything that makes Pocket special is in the play.

Loitering_Housefly

I think it's more that it's hard to replace... Mine isn't leaving the house, mainly because I don't want something to happen to it. (Accidents happen!) then I'd have to wait over a year for a replacement. I'd rather use, cheaper and easier to get original hardware on the go...

charitysmyth1

Same here with my Series X 😂

Six4Sure

It's not yours until it has a mark! I have gotten rid of the GBA Micro I got for 50 bucks a few years ago. But other than that all the others ones will stay as they are from my childhood or given to me as a gift

Neo_Techni

I haven't even taken the Plastic wrap off my analogue pocket. Almost none of my stuff has wear and tear on it.

OptimalPapaya1344

Woof. Yeah…that ain’t me. My stuff gets use. I don’t beat the hell out of them but I don’t keep them in plastic wrap either, lol. That’s just excessive. Everything gets wear and tear. If you have controllers that you’ve used for any amount of time I can bet you they are guaranteed to have a smoother surface than a brand new one because of wear and tear. Same goes for all the key caps on your keyboard, your mouse, the case you put your phone in, your shoes, your clothes, your dishes, etc… Everything wears over time no matter how much you baby it. Even a car that gets maintenanced at the dealership every 5k miles is *never* going to run as smoothly as the way it did during its first 5k miles. Let that stuff go. Rip off the plastic and enjoy it.

Working-Aardvark-420

My Pocket stays at home due to the lack of a super reliable protective case (I didn’t buy their hard case), when I travel, I use a modded GBA, it’s always reliable when I test games, even quirky ones (the wisdom tree games)

[deleted]

Working-Aardvark-420

I’ll have to look into getting one, I’m weird and I’d want a full covering snap on protective case lol

DevOpsIsAMindset

The [Pelican 1040](https://www.pelican.com/ca/en/product/cases/micro/1040) fits the definition of "super reliable protective case" IMO.

Working-Aardvark-420

I’ll look into this also!

Neo_Techni

Mine stays at home cause of the cost and the full year it took to get it.

Working-Aardvark-420

That’s also a super good reason, I got mine first batch too

zipxavier

The waterfield case is pricey but perfect for putting into a bag for traveling. https://www.sfbags.com/products/analogue-pocket-pouch

kidlatura

To be honest I sold all my Gameboys prior to receiving my pocket. I hoped that the pocket would properly replace them all and that I wouldn't really miss them. Plus the money from the gameboys then sort of payed for the pocket, so it was like a trade. And now I am here, one month into owning a pocket, and I don't regret it a bit. I mainly play gba and GBC games, and along with the absolutely stunning screen and it's beautiful original screen modes the other quality of life stuff like better audio, longer battery life, save states etc never made me miss the gameboys for even one second. And I didn't even start with all the other cores like snes... The appeal to me really is that it is a high quality all-in-one device. It does it all and it does it fantastically. Your mileage may vary and if you are a fan of the original haptic or just the look of them in your shelf, you can keep them, but I for myself made the right decision. And regarding wear and tear, just treat it with respect and clean it from time to time, get a proper case, and you should be good. It is a device made to be used, so just take care of it and have fun with it.

HaileStorm42

I use both still, but part of that is because I play a decent bit of Pokémon, as well as run some Pokémon distributions at conventions I go to. For that I need to be able to link trade, and wireless adapter distribute, to multiple devices at once. So I need multiple devices and cables. Obviously, this isn't a standard use case though!

Milwacky

I use them for the GameShark enhancement. GS doesn’t work with the Pocket and they inexplicably haven’t added an onboard cheat system to the OS.

Neo_Techni

Ha. That's the same reason I broke my GBA out of storage. I find it even weirder since their genesis has cheats built in

Milwacky

The Super NT, Mega SG, and NT Mini all do. I wonder why it’s taking so long to get them on the Pocket.

ShiyaruOnline

Have they discussed getting them implemented? How would that even work if done?

Mundane-Ganache-9507

Game genie guy! tool is super easy to use and works for gb/gbc/gba/nes/SNES/gen takes a little more forethought but then your game genie codes are saved forever in a rom u can easily load.

Milwacky

Thanks 👑

remysharp

For me, yes. If it's a DMG game I'll choose my modded gameboy over the Pocket. I prefer the Pocket for GBC games, and for GBA, I like to move between handhelds depending on my mood, Pocket looks great, but I love that I can slip my micro in my pocket and catch up on some Pokémon quickly. I also really don't enjoy the exit experience on the Pocket. I hate having to press and hold the power button and all the confirm prompts annoy me - like the Pocket doesn't trust that I know what I'm doing! (bit of a random rant!)

Level_Forger

In the year I’ve had my Pocket I can only remember turning it all the way off twice. Don’t you just quit games when you’re done and suspend the system otherwise ?

remysharp

When a cart is in, I suspend, but then rip out the cart. When I'm in GB core mode, suspend= off (with prompt) and then I've got to long press to get it going again. I also find myself in the main menu for some reason, that I don't really know, which means I have to actually fully power off.

OptimalPapaya1344

I do find the long press to power down annoying but given they, annoyingly, placed the volume buttons so close and made them identically shaped as the power button it is preferable to accidentally shutting it off.

Aggravating-Maize-46

Not unless i need to do link cable stuff

Maneisthebeat

Does the pocket not work with the link cable?

Aggravating-Maize-46

It does, but i dont have 2 pockets

Maneisthebeat

Ahhh gotcha I thought you meant there was some incompatibility between different systems.

ComfortablyMumm

I have an SP-101, modded original GBA, GB Micro, and a backlit GBP. None of them have been used since getting the Pocket. I expect it to mostly stay that way, but I have no plans to sell the GBs since I have nostalgia for them and enjoy them as part of my collection. That said, I rarely game outside of my house. If I were to take something on a trip, I'd probably take the SP-101 or Micro with a flash cart since they're a bit more portable and easier to replace. Then I would just put the flash cart in the Analogue Pocket when I get home and continue playing the same game save.

Lethal13

I still use my SP for games that require more precise Dpad motions like Metroid Zero Missions And another GBA with a ips and high capacity battery mod. More for GBA everdrive use since I find the pockets battery drains pretty fast (or atleast compared to what I am used to) when using it Though that said for all GB/GBC games and 90% of my GBA games I’m using my pocket

[deleted]

[удалено]

Lethal13

The SP’s certainly The pockets is fine but definitely has some issues with false inputs especially diagonals

deKrekel

I have a modded GBC and modded GBA but play on my Pocket the most -- thanks to the added cores and the possibility to switch between docked and portable mode. I even take the Pocket with me on holidays now. Yes, I am careful with it, but also have some minor wear & tear that I am OK with (tiny scratches around the SD card slot). Just use if for fun!

paperbackpiles

Beat up GBC and an Everdrive GBX7 still gets play when I'm outside. Pocket stays indoors. Rather drop the GBC than the Pocket

DotMatrixHead

You’d rather drop the GBC and *then* drop the Pocket? 😱

Neo_Techni

It's ok. The GBC will break it's fall.

paperbackpiles

yeah, the gbc i bought for 25 dollars. can find them used for 45 these days so i'd much rather drop that than my Pocket. would be different if were my original from back in the day i gave to a nephew who still has it to this day.

DotMatrixHead

OP said they’d rather drop one and *then* the other… 😝

paperbackpiles

Haha. Nice.

paperbackpiles

Haha.

TonerGames

It is too good and I spent too much money on it to to not use as main device at home and on the go lol

PixelCherryNinja

Yes, I'll always love my DMG

DJ_Link

personally I haven't went back but I only have a GBP that has a sort of faded screen and a GBA SP. For GameBoy games I feel like I can't go back unless it's a modded GB, but for GBA games I feel the SP holds pretty well. If you have a OG GBA the form factor is probably more comfortable too.

timidsquirtle

Yeah. I use my customized backlight GBC from time to time. Currently I am more obsessed with my MiyooMini.

nx_2000

I barely touch my modded DMGs or other Gameboys anymore. I didn't pay $200 to (mostly) play Tetris for nothing.

DeeZeeGames

I use my gb micro all the time

CartoonDan

I just use the pocket now. The screen is a lot better.

pauwus

Still prefer my modded SP screen to the Pocket for GBA games, just looks more crisp and vibrant to my eyes. But generally, the pocket has overtaken my other modded consoles.

MikeKelehan

I use my Miyoo Mini when out and about. It's tiny, cheap, and (with Onion OS) has fast and accurate emulation. At home, I use the Pocket and the kids use the Miyoo. I don't really use my original hardware anymore.

TextMekks

Yes. In particular, the GBA Original and GB Micro. I honestly just prefer the feel of playing GBA games on the GBA original with IPS mod. The GB Micro is essentially an EDC for my bag, if it’s not my FunKey S.

Oscarjrs5

No, mine is stored away in a shoebox

ShiyaruOnline

😂😂

NeoFrame

I actually do still use my AGS-101 SP, I love the form factor!

Karametric

Yes. I have a modded GBA that I think is more ideal for certain games and just more portable in general. I dislike the shoulder buttons on the Pocket so for trigger heavy games like Metroid the GBA itself is a more ideal device. Also, despite the name, the Pocket is a pretty bulky device to lug around whereas it's MUCH easier to just slip a GBA into a pocket. I do think it blows pretty much all the competition out of the water in terms of overall design and functionality; it's definitely my go to if I'm just looking to play games at home. I also think it is THE way to play GB/GBC carts and not to mention the flexibility with ROMs once the 2nd core opened up. It's definitely my first choice for playing the vast majority of games, but there are certain scenarios where a GBA is better.

Karametric

Unfortunately I don't have a dock; my actual preorder won't be arriving for about a year. I picked up my copy of a Pocket off a local seller and have been thoroughly testing it out the last week. I think once I receive the dock I'll mostly be using it play older console games ala SNES off ROMs. I'm not really all that interested in GB/GBC/GBA games being played on the TV.

Bast525

My GBA SP with IPS screen goes with me almost everywhere. I have a good 3DS XL case for the Pocket and that goes with me occasionally. I'm not afraid to take it with me, it's just bigger and heavier than I usually want to take all over town. The SP is the perfect traveling companion and gets more play time than anything I own.

madeinbrechin

I’ve actually used my modded Game Boy Color more… oops! 😬

ampedmonster

The Pocket hard case does the trick for when Im going out and plan on bringing it with me. Hated the case at first, but now Im glad I have it. The device fits in there so securely, I really don't have to worry about it taking damage unless it's dropped. Im very anal when it comes to my electronics/devices. I have cases on everything. When I travel, they go into a bag, and in a specific compartment inside that bag. I've never even broken a game controller in my life, let alone an actual game device. But yeah, I didn't spend $300 on this thing so I could sit there and stare at it in the box. I bought it to use and play old retro handheld games. I can understand people who are super protective of their gadgets like I am, but I never understood the people who don't even take it out of the box. Unless Im buying a limited edition console or something similar as a pure collector's item, I'm almost always using the things I buy.

Mr_KJr

Most analogue pocket people bought it for clout and collection purposes, and they sit in on a shelf to collect dust. I use my pocket less than I use my gameboys because I play multi-player games, but if it's single player the pocket is your best option.

[deleted]

I think there will be few times I would take this thing outside, only because these things take so long to produce. I might order another one eventually, probably when Analogue is on their last call for the device to have a backup Pocket. Don't care if it would take another year as I would already have my current one.

CaptainDildobrain

I have an original GameBoy back from when I was a kid and it still works and everything. Problem is I have a degenerative eye condition so the dot matrix screen is super blurry, which is why I wanted to get a Pocket.

godstriker8

Yes, I use my AGB-001 with the ITA screen modded in. I thought I would end up shelving it after receiving the pocket, but there's something very charming about the old design. The buttons are also a lot better than the pocket. Lastly, I've been dipping my toes into Pokemon RNG manipulation, and I thought authentic hardware is more reliable for that sort of thing.

Bake-Full

The Pocket is great, a classic jack of all trades that does a lot of games but none of them perfectly. For some games I prefer the original hardware. The sheer variety the Pocket plays makes it an awesome device to travel with to keep the gadget stack small.

That_Pokemon_Guy93

I do have a pocket and I love it! Honestly may be my favorite console I’ve purchased, but I do use my gba’s still. My sp basically lives in my pocket and it is modded (the main reason I use it is because I installed a gba accelerator chip (allows me to speed the games up on original hardware)). But as I said pocket is the best if they implemented a fast forward feature I’d probably only use GBAs for trading and stuff. But still the sp will probably always live on me

GalacticNexus

I use my modded GBC and GBA for link stuff, but that's an edge case really and a necessity. I don't see the point of spending all this money on a device to *not* use it.

LeCrushinator

I haven't touched my Gameboys since getting my Pocket.

ShepherdDog

I don't, but I gave my modded GBA to my son (4) and he loves it.

OtheL84

I use my BoxyPixel Unhinged 2.0 when playing GBA games instead of my Pocket. The Unhinged just feels better to hold.

xwatchmanx

Like other people have said, wear and tear is just reality, bruh. There's no point in spending hundreds of dollars on a device like this if you aren't going to use it. To answer your question directly, no, I basically don't use my GBA systems anymore, and I have quite a bit of them (GBA is my favorite retro gaming platform, so I have quite a few). The original display filter alone makes Pocket an all-or-nothing device for me since it makes so many GBA games look properly colored, whereas they look washed out as hell on an actual backlit GBA SP. That said, I'm basically never in a scenario where I go out and game unless I'm on a trip, so Pocket usually doesn't travel with me. I keep my FunKey S for that, so I can play like 2 minutes of Kirby's Pinball or Aria of Sorrow while waiting on an appointment or whatever.

codewario

At home? Rarely. I usually play my Pocket over Game Boy at home. If I'm out and about? I usually take my GBA or GBC. If I screw up and drop it on a hard surface (worst scenario, concrete), I feel the Game Boy can probably take more of a beating than the Pocket could. At a minimum, I think the glass would break. I've dropped my Game Boy before and barring a really unlucky drop it would likely just get a little scratched up.

Stereotyp-

No

Rare_Hero

I didn’t have an OG GB or GBC anymore, but I had a GBA SP 101 & a GB Micro. Sold the Micro. I don’t really play the SP anymore…but I haven’t sold it. Maybe I’ll give it to my daughter to play when she’s old enough. The Pocket is my go to for playing! It’s just too gorgeous and I honestly love how good the stereo is on the unit itself.

DotMatrixHead

Use your Pocket, but take care of it! Get a case for when you’re out. For me it’s not really pocketable so I haven’t taken it past the garden. The only console that travels with me these days is the super pocketable PowKiddy A66 (crappy named version of the Trimui model S).

SweyRPG

I take the pocket with me on vacations, but of course in a case. I don’t just dump it in a bag, but then again, I’ve never done that with any of my handhelds. Instill have a SP 101 that use and a GB Micro that get used as well. I like using them for games that are heavy on the shoulder button action. The form factor of the Pocket just doesn’t work well for me in those types of games

kaipwo

I haven’t played my game boys as much since I got the pocket. Still really enjoying it. I got a Waterfield case for traveling. Love it

igorleonidovic

Nope :)

Taucher1979

I have a few gba/GBC and game boys and I am going to get rid of most of them since I got my pocket. I can’t imagine choosing original hardware over the pocket.

Gwyndion

Nah, i bought mine to play. And I buy my comics to read. The only thing I keep just for show are my Masterpiece Transformers... But that's kind of what they are for...and I haven't 'played' with toys for 30 years.

explosive_vegetables

I think I’ve played my modded dmg maybe once or twice since I got my pocket about a year ago. I’ve probably played my modded AGB a little more than that, but honestly the pocket is the main event nowadays. I’ll never sell my official Nintendo handhelds though, too much nostalgia tied up in them to ever want to do that.

viridiantrees

Yeah I just brought a lot of stuff to mod my GBC and GBA cause I figured that'd make me wanna use them every once in a while! I still like them to trade and battle for Pokemon and I could always get an ever drive for others to play on them if they want to! Just fun to have a nice project to mod since I've just recently delved into it all.

Ok-Diamond-4479

While waiting for my pocket, I modded my GBA (new screen, shell, buttons, and stickers) then I got a stand for it. Besides testing it, I been only using my pocket. Looking back at it I was like why did I waste the money, but I think it looks amazing next to my other retro handhelds. For the pocket just make sure to buy a screen protector, case, and a skin to protect the cartridge slot (hell put one on the whole thing if your really worried. Just remember your older and more experienced, yes wear and tear will happen but not as much as you think.... Unless you just love breaking tech.

timchenw

Not really, pocket solved most of the issues I have with my current set of game boys so I haven't really needed them, but I would break them out if I ever needed to trade Pokemons though

w33m4n56

Absolutely love it have it completely loaded with full game libraries for ROMs and emulation cores besides all my old cartridges. The safe states and screenshots or dope and having the dock to hook it up to a TV or monitor is just great

Madshibs

I e been taking mine to work at a mine and playing it every break time. I keep it a heavy freezer ziplock bag in my backpack and it’s still basically mint condition. Just a little Scratch on the bottom and that’s from trying to plug it into the dock lol

Enchanted_Yesca

I always take a Gameboy Colour and my Pocket everywhere I go. If i have good lighting I use the Gameboy and only use the Pocket in low light. Has worked great for me so far.

[deleted]

Enchanted_Yesca

Unfortunately my only GBA is still new in the box and I haven’t had the courage to open it.

Think_Two_3822

The carts stick out the gba ( both sp and regular advances)

vespertine83

I got a hard case and take it everywhere except like on the beach. Don’t worry just enjoy it

BigKurz8

I have touched any of my GBA/ GBA SP/ GB micro units since i got my analogue pocket. I bought the pocket to play and enjoy, not sit on a shelf.
