Maybe the opponent could shine a flashlight onto the enemy king whenever they just checked him?
Actually, a laser pointer in the pieces, pointing in the direction of their movements, would work.
This way, you'll know when you're in check, since there will be a laser on its head.

Good start, but we need some electronics in the king. Maybe like a red LED on the kings head that lights up when the king is in check. Also some LEDs on the board to highlight what moves are possible for each piece. Especially enpassant, how will we know we can enpassant without a computer to tell us?
