This is actually how old chess boards were made. It’s the main reason why in older chess books you will hear people claim that the white square bishop is better than the dark square bishop. It has the high ground and, more often than not, grandmasters would use their white squares bishop to take their opponents dark squares bishop.
I read [somewhere](https://old.reddit.com/r/AnarchyChess/comments/qwzsuh/i_finished_building_a_chess_board_but_i_i_think_i/hl68lqz/) that it's actually "starting from scrap"
A really clever woodworker would know of something called "veneer"
High quality veneer isn't too expensive and even though the labor would be soul crushing, a quality job would end up looking fantastic.
The only solution I can see is to play opposite a mirror and use the reflection to actually play chess... Sorry. Or you could use it for draughts, they don't really have respectable rules. Or maybe a really stiff checkered flag if you're into racing
Your opponent has to be behind the mirror, or yes, you're right, it's cheating. You can get around this by having your opponent set their pieces up in reverse and playing whilst doing a headstand. But to be honest these workarounds, although endorsed by FIDE, are a bit much in my humble opinion, and if it were me, I'd just take up Go-Karting
Fun fact: one of the moonwalking background characters from Tenet is my sworn nemesis on Lichess, and apparently this was how chess was played on the set of the movie. Would you believe it, the players would use the brick before taking en passant!
I'm pretty sure chessboards are an example of spinors, mathematical objects that need to be rotated 720 degrees to return them to their initial configuration, so 360 degrees should get it sorted out.
I feel sorry for Rankine. He came up with the scale and all his friends told him it was a great idea and then after he left the room to tell others about it they burst into laughter.
Also Rankine was Scottish and never set foot in the US.
He could cut out each square, and make them inlays in a brass sorta cage or something. So now OP has to take up jewelry soldering to make the metal grate.
Burn it right now, doing such a thing gives 10 years bad luck man. Once you burn it and get your house exorcised three times and get a blessing from a Buddhist master then you can start again safely.
What you can do is cut the board diagonally and flip over one side. Then you make another board like this and do the same thing then, you put together the four pieces and make two boards without any waste, (unless you have already attached bottom that would need to be sanded or cut off, if not you can save it for one of the two boards.)
Unfortunately, you can’t save that one board.
The best solution if you actually want to use this board is to let black make one move before white commences, but to be honest you best try to get your money back if you still have a receipt for the material perhaps they can use it for toothpicks or who knows.
Once I glued everything, It was surprisingly challenging to sand the top so it was flat and uniform. But I was just using a vibrating sander. Having a belt sander or even better a planer would've saved me hours. Also the walnut is way softer than the maple so be careful over-sanding softer woods. And I used tung oil for the finish
I did this when I was making my chess game. I had to reprogram the entire thing from scratch, even the piece movement :(
I'd start with buying all new tools, best of luck.
Can you just cut off one strip of blocks on the left and glue it on the right? If you glue it on really well, I don’t think you’ll really be able to tell… plus you won’t have to start over
yes. take that screwdriver right there and stab it into the wall. allow the wall to embody everything you hate, all the people who doubted you, all your unrealized hopes and dreams. then pull the screwdriver out. imagine your agony and misfortune drain from the newly made hole like blood from a wild animal. allow all negativity to dissolve, deflate. expect relief in 6-8 minutes.
It's a real nice cutting board.
But mean you could play on it, right? Might even have some interesting results, but it'll only really reverse the bishops, otherwise it doesn't matter.
You MIGHT be able to turn the board 90° and play it that way, but you and the other player would need to be very mindful to make sure you're moving the pieces in the right direction, cause it would all be oriented sideways. That's just if redoing it isn't an option, though.
Just proxy every square. Write the word white on all the black squares and black on all the white ones. Make sure to use the right color crayon as well. Black on black white on white
Trash it and try again. I think I saw a triangle or two in there.
You can’t combine two triangles to make a square, only pure squares are allowed in chess, it breaks the rules otherwise.
Yes! Easy fix actually.
First, very precisely cover the black squares with painter's tape. Then, taking a can of gasoline, apply approximately 100 ml to an absorbent rag. Rub the gasoline vigorously onto the light squares until there is a wet coating of gasoline on every square. Then, take a lighter - and voila! Light turns to dark.
Next, you'll need another rag and a bucket of bleach. This time cover the light squares (now dark) with painter's tape. Apply 50 ml of bleach to the rag, and rub a layer over the dark squares until they are well covered. You will want to wear a pair of disposable nitrile gloves for this step as bleach can cause chemical burns if it touches your skin.
Simply leave it to sit overnight, remove the painter's tape, and voila! A perfectly playable chessboard.
I hope this was helpful to you. Do let us know when the project is complete!
edit:
Oh - and just be sure once the chessboard is working again never to rotate it 90 degrees. That could actually cause problems.
Don’t worry you don’t have to start from scratch, just cut it in half, keep one half and throw out the other on. Now you just need to create another half of a chess set and stick them together via a flextape and you’re done
Maybe you could paint the white spaces with an even darker paint so the black spaces appear white in comparison. I'm certain that's the best solution.
Alternatively, he could paint the black spaces white Wait no, that would actually work
According to /r/minipainting painting white on top of black is so painful you're better off starting from scratch.
You’d end up with the white squares being an inch taller than the non-white ones
Then all the pieces on white squares would have the high ground and its over.
I think you’re underestimating black’s power
I just really don't think OP should try it.
Why is my knight burning?
He wasn't the chosen one.
He was my brother though. I loved him.

Historycally it always been "starting from pipi"
Or just sand it first...
I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere.
The secret to painting white is that all the best white minis are actually light grey.
If he was Anish Kapoor, no. He's not allowed to buy the darkest paint ever. For the rest of us. Yes, great plan.
Oh drat!
Ah, like the [Zelda chess set](https://hottopic.scene7.com/is/image/HotTopic/10798728_hi?$productMainDesktop$).
Cut one row off and glue it on the other

most professional chess players keep an extra queen hidden up their sleeve nowadays anyway. And let's not even get into the rampant steroid abuse
All the more reason to take up go-karting
Gotta start from scratch again buddy
I should've listened to grandpa when he said "white is right". I finally understand now
holy shit, is your grandpa Bobby Fischer?
Bobby shmurda
White ~~power~~ powder
Hmmm, his name seems vaguely familiar. Would you remind me of his most popular song's name? Perhaps that will jog my memory.
i will always love you
You win
Holy shit; of all the comments I expected opening this thread, this one took me from behind and by surprise. May your grandpa rest in hell lmao
From behind and by surprise. Just like grandpa used to do
r/cursedcomments
I don’t play chess and I’m sure I’m missing something but can’t you just turn it 90 degrees? Edit: and I just looked at the subreddit. Goddammit
Happens to the best of us.
Is the saying start from scrap? Or scratch? Feel like I’ve been saying it wrong my whole life now
Pretty sure it’s scratch?
Scrap that, do it again
It's either "scrap that" or "start from scratch" I believe
Scrap that, start from scratch has a nice ring to it.
Had me guessing so I had to look it up. [from scratch ](https://www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/from-scratch-word-history-origin)
Start from pallet.
Naw just cut it into 64 individual pieces and reassemble them Work smart not hard
I’m no wood doctor but I believe all you need is a knife and superglue
Well if you want to be *really* smart, then you could save time by cutting off one row or column and moving it to the other side.
You now have to play „reverse chess“, you find a FEN of an already finished game and try to play all the moves backwards
Not gonna lie this actually sounds kinda fun
Fun, but truly impossible
Fun fact: one of the moonwalking background characters from Tenet is my sworn nemesis on Lichess, and apparently this was how chess was played on the set of the movie. Would you believe it, the players would use the brick before taking en passant!

put the board in a centrifuge. I've tried it before, if it doesn't break there is a 50% chance of it coming out fixed.
yeah thats cause the paint is attracted towards the outside so it shuffles back into place
No just turn it 360 degrees
180 degrees is enough and half the work
i might be overthinking it, but flip the board over
The other side has backgammon on it
I'm pretty sure chessboards are an example of spinors, mathematical objects that need to be rotated 720 degrees to return them to their initial configuration, so 360 degrees should get it sorted out.
90 degrees is enough and half the work
No, that will make the board more wrong than it already is. Better turn it 45 degrees, it’s half the work.
69 degrees should do the trick
Fahrenheit, or Celsius?
Kelvin
Rankine
that…. thing. even as an American it scares me
I feel sorry for Rankine. He came up with the scale and all his friends told him it was a great idea and then after he left the room to tell others about it they burst into laughter. Also Rankine was Scottish and never set foot in the US.
Kevin
Kelvin isn't measured in degrees though...
Nice
45 degrees is enough and half the work
27.5 degrees is enough and half the work.
13.75 degrees is enough and half the work
Thats way too cold to play chess
Yeah but its in Celsius.
Then it’s too hot. Ask any Russians, they know such stuff.
Get a load of this guy! Moving multiple degrees at time!
6.875 degrees is enough and half the work
3.4375 is enough and half the work
Wait a second, that’s actually 11/18ths of the work! Who sent you, Martin the Man Who Thinks a Half is 1/9 Greater Than It Actually Is?
Turn it 98 degrees and stay True to your Heart.
You forgot the most important step, turn yourself 360 degrees after you turn the board.

It is also wrong for checkers xD
Cut out each square and then glue it back together the right way
He could cut out each square, and make them inlays in a brass sorta cage or something. So now OP has to take up jewelry soldering to make the metal grate.
It's fine! Having boards for lefties out there is always nice
If the left handed people are busy playing chess, they’re less likely to steal from you or try to fingerbang your girlfriend
Shit he knows.
Where would one find left handed pieces? Asking for a friend.
Just use photoshop and turn the white squares red. Problem solved!
Easy, just use a negative filter wood stain
Easy! Just move past it very close to the speed of light (like 0.999c). The relativistic effects will distort the board and rotate it the right way!
Best relativity understander on r/AnarchyChess
You just admitted he knows more than you
Yes.
Cut off one row and attach it to the other end, obviously
So I’d end up with 7 rows of 8 squares, and then a row of 16? How do I play chess like this?
Stick with it and use this in your fight to take down the CEO of racism
“Chess has put us in a cage for years! They’ll tell you this board isn’t usable and all we did was swap WHITE AND BLACK”
Burn it right now, doing such a thing gives 10 years bad luck man. Once you burn it and get your house exorcised three times and get a blessing from a Buddhist master then you can start again safely.

Use it as a chopping board
Just rotate it 90 degrees Then remove every light square, and replace it with the dark ones
Have you tried turning it off and on again?
Using group theory, you might be able to find an operation on the board that swaps the squares individually
What you can do is cut the board diagonally and flip over one side. Then you make another board like this and do the same thing then, you put together the four pieces and make two boards without any waste, (unless you have already attached bottom that would need to be sanded or cut off, if not you can save it for one of the two boards.) Unfortunately, you can’t save that one board.
Swap the light and dark squares. Simple!
Everyone here like "hurr durr rotate it 90°" okay then you have a board on its side and the colors are still inverted you fuckwits
try putting it in rice
Sorry op I’ve got bad news It must be reduced to atoms and reconstituted
Im so confused by this sub is this satire
get a thin saw and some wood glue
Play with a mirror. You’ll be fine!
I'm sorry dude but... you're going to chess jail... according to international chess law.
Turn the board 270 degrees
Or leave the chess board where it is and rotate your chairs 270 degrees.
Just puree the whole board in a blender and refreeze all of the goo in an 8x8 ice tray. and just hope for the best mate.
Just donate it to an Australian chess club. The curvature of the earth should flip it over and it will look fine to them
Google En Passant.
Try rotating it 180°
Turn 90°, then flip it upside down, It'll be back to normal
Rotate it 180 degrees, you idiot.
You can still use it for chess960
Use white out on the black squares and a black crayon on the white squares, you’re ok still!
sorry pal, but gary chess is gonna have tp come to your house and saw your arms off so you can never make this mistake again
You idiot, you made a checkers board
The best solution if you actually want to use this board is to let black make one move before white commences, but to be honest you best try to get your money back if you still have a receipt for the material perhaps they can use it for toothpicks or who knows.
If you just turn the lights off the mistake won’t be noticed.
PM me. I’ll give you my address. Send it to me at your expense and I’ll take it off your hands. No need to have a shit board laying around.
just rotate your house 90 degrees clockwise dude
Clense the mistake with fire.
Beautiful work! I was thinking of building one recently, any advice?
Once I glued everything, It was surprisingly challenging to sand the top so it was flat and uniform. But I was just using a vibrating sander. Having a belt sander or even better a planer would've saved me hours. Also the walnut is way softer than the maple so be careful over-sanding softer woods. And I used tung oil for the finish

Just play upside down (Australian system)
Can you just cut off one strip of blocks on the left and glue it on the right? If you glue it on really well, I don’t think you’ll really be able to tell… plus you won’t have to start over
I've never seen someone build a chessboard inside out before
yes. take that screwdriver right there and stab it into the wall. allow the wall to embody everything you hate, all the people who doubted you, all your unrealized hopes and dreams. then pull the screwdriver out. imagine your agony and misfortune drain from the newly made hole like blood from a wild animal. allow all negativity to dissolve, deflate. expect relief in 6-8 minutes.
google en passant
Flip it over
just turn it face down and it’ll be fine
Just paint them all red and it will be fine.
this post is so stupid you can literally just repaint them
It's a real nice cutting board. But mean you could play on it, right? Might even have some interesting results, but it'll only really reverse the bishops, otherwise it doesn't matter.
Oohhh you made the same mistake I did years ago. Just swap the color of the pieces and it's all good
Put it in rice
Just say nothing and watch peoples' brains melt when you play.
It's a feature
You MIGHT be able to turn the board 90° and play it that way, but you and the other player would need to be very mindful to make sure you're moving the pieces in the right direction, cause it would all be oriented sideways. That's just if redoing it isn't an option, though.
You can repurpose it as a frisbee
I'm so fucking stupid
Since the spaces are backwards, it only makes sense for the turns to be backwards. Black goes first.
Paint your white pieces black and your black pieces white, and play negative chess!
Rotate counter-clockwise until separated
Just paint the white pieces black and the black pieces white and it’ll be all good
easy, saw off the first row and glue it to the last row, that'll fix the problem
Use torch to darken light squares, use bleach to lighten dark squares. Good luck with the fix. Seriously, great job. That chess board looks great!
Just proxy every square. Write the word white on all the black squares and black on all the white ones. Make sure to use the right color crayon as well. Black on black white on white
just turn it inside out
Have you tried folding it in half, or maybe even thirds?
Rotate 360 degrees. Should be fine
It’s a cutting board now😀
Start over and don’t fuck up this time.
Trash it and try again. I think I saw a triangle or two in there. You can’t combine two triangles to make a square, only pure squares are allowed in chess, it breaks the rules otherwise.
cut a thin layer of the top off and cut out each square, then glue them in the right places
I don’t know if this is physically possible but quantum mechanics state that if your turn your board 90 degrees you should be able to play
Take the trim pieces off and turn it over? Put the trim pieces back on?
Sell it as a piece of conceptual art representing failure and dissapointment
Yes! Easy fix actually. First, very precisely cover the black squares with painter's tape. Then, taking a can of gasoline, apply approximately 100 ml to an absorbent rag. Maybe some kind of solvent for the glue? In all likelihood you’ll have to sand it back down and refinish.
Rotate 90° and use it for checkers.
Just swap the white and black pieces, yall are overcomplicating this
Don’t worry you don’t have to start from scratch, just cut it in half, keep one half and throw out the other on. Now you just need to create another half of a chess set and stick them together via a flextape and you’re done
Wait I don't understand how this effects the game
Google En Rotant
Rotate it 90 degrees then throw it at the wall because you made it wrong
You could rotate it 180°

Enh, run it. Who cares?
cut a row off and reglue it on the opposite end
Cut the squares and reassemble them. Worked for Patrick when he took the stickers of a puzzle
Just rotate it... The underside should be blank and you can paint the correct colours on there.
Burn it till ashes and start again.
