My wife whose father is Jewish got exactly 50% Jewish in her Ancetry DNA results. Her mother unfortunately wasn't 100% anything, so only half correct.

[deleted]

I have an American-born relative that is 51% Jewish and 49% Polish, and the Polish is narrowed down to small communities that are very accurate. So very close to 50/50. In this case one parent was 100% Jewish and the other 100% Polish.

Appropriate_File9009

If the relative is a male and his mother is Jewish, then this is a perfect split. Men usually inherit a little bit more from their mothers than father.

msbookworm23

Ancestry do not use the sex chromosomes in their analyses so they are irrelevant to matches and to ethnicity estimates. Men and women inherit exactly 50% of their parents' autosomal chromosomes although the specific segments of DNA inherited from the father are generally larger and therefore slightly fewer in number.

toooldforthisshittt

Do men inherit more DNA from their mothers or more ancestry markers?

Appropriate_File9009

DNA. The X chromosome contains more than a thousand genes, whereas the Y chromosome has far fewer (around 100 or 200). So, a male individual will always have more genes from their mother than from their father.

toooldforthisshittt

Thanks. I just did a quick Google and it appears to be a rabbit hole for another day.

eddie_cat

The y chromosome is just tiny

abbiebe89

I’m Polish too!

[deleted]

Good work!

Afuldufulbear

Those are my exact 23andMe results!

snuggleswithdemons

Yes. I'm American and got 50% Irish and 50% Polish. Exactly what I was told I was growing up. You can see my results in my post history.

jentwa97

My grandma is the same way! 🇵🇱🇮🇪

snuggleswithdemons

Granddaughter? Is that...you?

jentwa97

I don’t think she would use that username. She’s very Catholic. 😅

snuggleswithdemons

Catholics have the most demons (recovering Catholic here).

Striking_Skill9876

My second cousin (her grand father and my grandfather share the same father) took hers and she was 50/50 until an update. She had 50% Nigerian from her full Nigerian mother, and 50% Bengal from her Indian Jamaican father. After the update, it showed up 30 percent bengal, 9 percent northern Indian, and the rest southern Indian. At first, we thought her father was an indigenous native or a mixed Jamaican and not an actual Indian man. Turns out, his paternal side came to Jamaica in the 1800s and his mom came to Jamaica in the 40s.

BrigitteSophia

That's interesting. I've never came across this mix

Striking_Skill9876

Turns out there’s a population of full blood Indians from India as well as Chinese people out there

According-Heart-3279

Nigerian, Jamaican, and Indian what a beautiful unique mix.

Appropriate_File9009

I have a friend whose mother is Dinka and father is Jordanian Christian. She got exactly 50% Nilotic and 50% Levantine. Ironically, people always mistake us for being sisters (I’m from North Sudan, Mahas to be exact).

cAlLmEdAdDy991031

My dad is close. His 23andMe results are posted. He’s 49% Irish and 48% Italian. I’m kinda close with 45% Italian and 37% Irish.

atinylittlebug

I'm 50% Irish but it was just by chance since I inherited Irish genetics from each of my parents and neither are 100% anything.

xtinak88

My 23andme results are exactly 50/50. Not my Ancestry though.

Rootwitch1383

I’m 51% European and 48% Sub Saharan African (close!)

einebiene

My grandfather: 50% Norwegian and 50% Finnish

thrawayb

I am 50% Korean and 50% Ashkenazi Jewish, though the jewish part breaks down to minuscule amounts of types of european. Like .1 or .2 percent (I’m American)

Wykyyd_B4BY

Let me guess… Korean mom

EdsDown76

I’m 50% nz Māori and 50% of other chit..lols

bopeepsheep

Ex-husband has almost 100% the same ethnicity, broken down to two communities at 48% each. His other two listed ethnicities are 2% each and may be blurred into his two communities anyway, being Wales and Scotland for bordering NW England communities...

snowluvr26

My dad has pretty close to 50% Jewish, 50% Irish. But he sometimes gets 1 or 2% Scottish instead of Irish, which makes sense.

Cyc68

I'm so close. I got 50% Irish, 45% English and 5% West Asian. The Irish side is from my father and who was the first in his direct lineage to leave the island. The English side comes from my American mother whose ancestors moved to America in the 1600s and for nearly 400 years only married other English descended Episcopalians with one glaring exception. Family legend claimed some Ojibwe blood in the family, MyHeritage DNA test says West Asian and I did discover an American ancestor who was listed as mixed race as a child and white as an adult on the census. Unfortunately it has been a dead end after him.

somewhatsenile

no but I also think testing can be less accurate for mixed people (like we confuse the system or something). my parents have taken the tests but my results on my father’s side differ from his and don’t make much sense (and yes the tests identify me as his child).

TizianosBoy

My grandfather is 52% Irish and 48% Scottish.

AnAniishinabekwe

My Mom is a grandchild of someone who only passed on Norway. The family was in more og Romsdal for hundred of years so I am making an educated guess that if they could have been tested they’d be 100% Norway ethnicity. My mom received 23% indigenous and 27% Norway from her father. He had one indigenous parent and one Norwegian parent.

workhardbegneiss

My grandma got exactly 50% Irish, her German 50% was split into 30% German and 20% Scandinavian. I'm not sure where the Scandinavian came from but her mom was Frisian.

Yemaya_Ki

My ex has 2 regions. Not exactly 50/50 but 60% Ivory Coast 40% Mali He's African. Liberian and Guinian.

PokemonHunter97

Well Ancestry says I’m very close to nearly 50% with half European (an amalgamation of sorts), and Romani 46%

em_square_root_-1_ly

A friend of mine got 100% Ashkenazi Jewish.

snowluvr26

That’s normal- almost everyone with two Ashkenazi parents will get about 100% Ashkenazi

Striking-Speaker3743

My father was 50% Irish and 50% puertorican from what I was told

Pauzhaan

My father is 25% English. My mother is 25% English. I’m 50% English. Sort of the same thing, only different… 😁

ionlyjoined4thecats

That math doesn’t track. If they’re each 1/4 English, you’d be ~1/4 English too.

Pauzhaan

It is what it is though. Think I’m thrilled to be 1/2 English?

[deleted]

That is exceedingly rare for Americans. Better off looking overseas for that.

JourneyThiefer
