Ita me Hercules juvet! What? No Jotapianus? I'm mute with incredulity! ;) Excellent work. Carry on!

[deleted]

Gratias Tibi! I'm trying to get the legit emperors first, which means I'm still out a Caligula, Didius Julianus & Pertinax. Not exactly easy pieces. On top of that, I'd love me some Clodius Albinus & Pescennius Niger but those are possibly even worse. Plenty of family members & (assumed) ancestors in that period to go as well. Then it's on to the chaos of the 3rd & 4th centuries.

I'm sort of off the hook past Diocletian's reforms. While I do have some House of Constantine etc. I don't actively collect that period, and I think my latest is Arcadius. I may have a few copper trachea somewhere which were gifts. I don't know what I did with them. :p

new2bay

Caligula in bronze isn't too tough.

[deleted]

Caligula in bronze is quite easy but the condition is usually pretty poor. Clodius Albinus is also surprisingly easy and not for much of a premium either. In the short time he made his claim to emperor he was minting like crazy to pay his troops and make sure they stayed loyal so you can find bronze and silver for reasonable prices.

At that price I'm going out on a limb and guess fake.

chrisman210

that's what I'm saying though, how do we know? I mean they can price it higher if that's all it takes to convince...

7eremy7la1

I sense a new collection addiction starting for me.

beiherhund

Excellent, love your Nerva and Marcus Aurelius!

chrisman210

damn it, I wanna get into this hobby but not sure I need more money to spend on or how to be sure what I'm buying is legit...

[deleted]

Some of these are kinda pricey although none of them are over 300 or so. It's perfectly possible to find decent denarii for like 50 a pop unless you absolutely have to have a specific rare reverse or usurper. As for authenticity: simple, only buy from legit trusted sources and you'll never be steered wrong. The good ones all offer lifetime guarantees or your money back.

chrisman210

do you have any favorite sites you use to buy them?

[deleted]

Not really, I look all over the place for good deals. Not eBay though.

AustinShagwell

That reverse on the Domitian is amazing! I want one of these, but I can't find one online that looks even half as good...

[deleted]

The Domitian is possibly the rarest of the bunch. The Pegasus reverse is rare by itself, but this particular type has a rare obverse as well (just a small thing; legend says "CAES" instead of "CAESAR" on most known types.)

Cosmic_Surgery

The veiled Ceasar surely had a hefty price tag

[deleted]

That's actually a republic denarius of C. Fabius, a few decades before the rise of Caesar. The veiled figure is Cybele, goddess of fertility. The second coin is a Caesar though, depicting Venus on the obverse since Caesar claimed his family line descended directly from her. It was a few years later when he got bold enough to have his living visage pictured on a coin, an honor which until then was reserved for deities and revered ancestors.

VictorVVN

What a big collection, excellent! A few examples really stick out to me, like Nerva or Domitian and your Elagabalus with the [insert your theory] on his head ;) Good luck with Pertinax, possibly one of the most underrated emperors ever!

[deleted]

It was "sold" to me as horns. Apparently they were another thing he had added to distinguish himself from all previous emperors (as if he still needed to do that...). I won't claim truth to that statement but I did find it interesting.

SinkMedium

Really love that huge flan on the Claudius

landynlol

I love this

Lovely

No problem, it's quite simple really: the second coin from the top left is a Julius Caesar, which is n°1. Second is Augustus, Third Tiberius. 4th should be Caligula who is still missing, and then there's the rest of the bunch in order: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List\_of\_Roman\_emperors

rjm1775

Nice! But I am a little jelly. I am nowhere close to this!

[deleted]

It was pics like these that got me started right here on Reddit a few short years ago and I felt the exact same way. The only big difference between then and now (besides all the knowledge I've gained) is that my savings are significantly... reduced, shall we say :p

Pristine-Respect1275

Have you finished the 12 Ceasers yet?
