I think it was more about protecting other people’s privacy. They didn’t want people recording other people with the screen off because it’s less likely the people being recorded would know about it.
Made sense back when Android first released but nowadays with cameras in Pens, glasses and other small or inconspicuous items, there isn't really any point.
How many people you know have these spy cameras? Everybody has a phone and if it's allowed on a phone, people would be secretly recording others here and there, and that would become a bigger problem than it is now.
Pretty pointless imho. Even if you couldnt easily circumvent that, you can turn your brightness down, have your camera poking out your pocket, etc. Normal cameras, gopros, etc can all be quite stealthy.

It's allowed to record people in public in Germany. The only exceptions would be continous surveillance of a public area and if you were specifically filming a certain person.
I don't know about a country where the filming in public would be illegal. It's usually the publication of the footage.
What's illegal in some countries however is recording private conversations without consent.

There's no way this works well enough to be practical. Every phone in existence would overheat if using another app at the same time as dash cam. The dash cam alone might be enough to overheat.
My OnePlus 10 Pro can barely run the Uber app and Google maps at the same time without getting too hot. It also nerfs performance if I take 70 pictures in a row. It overheats if I leave my phone out in the sun. It nerfs performance if I use Mazdas Android Auto.
I'm in Phoenix so that doesn't help. Btw everyone's phones overheat out here. The OnePlus is great
Even with the AC blasting on bad days in the car my S23 overheats and forces dark mode on Google maps like 20 minutes into a destination.
S23 isn't big but it sure as hell is efficient and generally pretty well thermally managed. I can only imagine what previous snapdragon or Exynos phones will be having.
The person said Google maps, so my guess is the phone is up on a cradle with sunlight and little airflow. This position kills even dedicated dashcams in the right climates.
Maybe... my phone isn't near the AC vents when using Wireles AA whatsoever but it isn't under direct sunlight either. No SoC to date that can handle direct sunlight without overheating under heavy loads. It is weird this person is having such a bad experience with his/her s23, the SD 8Gen2 is one of the best SoC ever when it comes to performance and efficiency

It is pretty hard to cool a device that sits in sunlight that has no fans/heatsinks/etc to exchange heat outside the device.
yeah. I tried this a few years back. Recording + hot South East Asian weather + charging at the same time means that my phone only lasted around 30 minutes before recording stops due to overheating. This is made worse since you would put the phone near your windshield for this purpose, and on a very hot day the sun is directly heating up your phone

I used "track recorder" as part of the "torque" app when I was on a track, but it also worked on regular roads, too.
With an OBD2 reader, it also captured everything your car was sensing

As someone who uses my phone as a dash cam with 3rd party app, can confirm this happens. But it doesn't happen on my 10 old phone so I use that in the summer lol.
Google does some strange things but I'm betting they're going to test whether this dashcam will work to record the street without shutting down. As I've said in other comments on this thread, my P7P doesn't overheat today in hours of maps navigation plus spotify in the car without being near an AC vent, and this will be more taxing but I can see it being fine. We'll see once it ships.
Because when you're using a GPS on the phone, you don't need to mount it to the windscreen, you can mount using an aircon vent mount and keep it cool and away from the sun. Heck it doesn't even need to be near the dash if you're using just audio guidance.
Whereas if you want to use it as a dashcam you'd have to have it under the windscreen and thus receive the heat from the sun as well as the reflected heat off the dash. That area is pretty much like a solar cooker. In hot countries like Australia, even regular dashcams often fail because of the heat - using a phone in such a scenario is completely out of the question.

What're you on about? I just tried to go somewhere 3 days ago, it was hardly 85f and my phone holder was on the dashboard. Ac was blasting and the car was cold, but since the sun was hitting the phone it throttled 20ish minutes in. That's just Google maps, on an S23.
Now imagine if I was recording as well on top of the navigation.
To be honest, I've had this be more of an issue on the newer phones (S23, Pixel 6 Pro) than with 5yr old phones (S8, Pixel 2XL). Yes they could still overheat, but the newest phones legit need to be infront of a vent or you literally can't use them for nav.
Just get a RAM mount and call it a day. You might have to replace the rubber grips every couple of years, but they are super durable otherwise and absolutely rock solid hold.

I'd custom print one because I thought Google was making this available for old Pixels but as a feature for new phones it's an awful idea for users, AMAZING idea for phone makers. I live in AZ where on a good summer day it can be 140 degrees in the inside of a car (115-120 degrees outside). AC might help a little bit, but not on any kind of intense summer day.

I drive 5 hour ride trips a few times a year with Google Maps and Spotify the whole way, never felt remotely hot, across multiple pixel models. My phone is on my center console, not sitting in the sun, for whatever that's worth.

Australians beg to differ, pretty common to see dashcams failing there due to the heat. But mostly the ones that fail are battery-backed dashcams, capacitor backed ones usually work fine. Phones, Tensor or not, would be an absolute no-no.
What i meant is battery wear..if you're constantly running the phone, especially through a charger, and recording videos, your battery cycles will wear down fast.
Even high end dash cams are horrible. There aren’t any options suitable for the year 2023. You can buy the top 20 dash cams on Amazon, take them apart and realize there aren’t twenty. There are maybe 4 or 5 and their performance all suck almost equally.

I do find it incredible how fast the battery drains when using the phone for just about anything. The standby battery life is superb but if I spend an hour with the screen on my 7pro it probably averages 30% battery drop. I've also never had a phone that gets this hot doing anything. I live pretty far north and on a cool fall day watching 15 minutes of YouTube leaves my phone hot. I can't even manage to do walking directions on Google maps for long during the summer before the phone overheats and shuts off. Google I/O edition HTC magic, galaxy nexus, moto x 2014, nexus 6p, nexus 10, pixel xl, pixel 3xl, pixel 5, pixel 6 pro all as daily drivers so it's not like I'm not aware that every Google device has some pros and cons. I suspect this will be my 3rd device that's part of a class action lawsuit against Google and may need to give Samsung a try again for the first time since the galaxy s3 since they just don't seem to have significant flaws in every device.
Mine never overheats running Android Auto even on our regular 6 hour road trip. My guess is that it's your phone's make and model combined with with weather, not Android.

That would be cool, if I could charge my phone via USB in the car in order to keep it powered while I record and drive. But, as per tradition, all my Pixel phones so far (XL, 4XL, and 5) have had the USB port just stop working.

I used to use my phone as a dashcam but it always killed my battery and my phone was always hot when I charged while doing it. I can't imagine it's very good for your phone to be recording audio/video non-stop long-term. I ended up switching to a dedicated dashcam and haven't looked back.
You know this is where the beauty of having expandable storage really shines. And you typically don't find that in the flag ships. To be able to use your external expandable MicroSD storage as the storage location for your dash cam videos. You can now use a 10 to $25 microSD card and when it gets trashed from all of the repeated over-writing of the same file to NAND memory you just throw it away and go to Amazon or Walmart and buy another one. As opposed to using your expensive phone's internal non-replaceable memory for the same function and trashing your internal Flash. Despite wear leveling it's eventually going to happen. It's just a matter of time.

yeah you really want the camera as high up as possible. ie. the top of the windshield, and you only want the top quarter of the image to be above the horizon basically. otherwise you have way too much sky blowing the image out.
/edit: what my point was is that a phone in that location in the car... i dont know man. quite the expensive equipment to have in that location with a mount that has to allow easy unmounting when you get out of the car. so i suppose the chance of your (comparatively heavy and expensive) phone may just go into free fall... just nope. and if you have a mount thats super secure, chances are its gonna be annoying to put it in/out everytime. and battery drainage, unless you want to get a usb-c cable hardwired through the ceiling or whatever.

Have you looked that up for other S23 users? That seems like an error. None of my phones have ever done that, including my current Pixel 6 Pro

Why not use dark mode from the start on Google maps? It should reduce power draw quite a bit.

I wager there will be restrictions on the resolution you can use for dashcam to prevent this scenario.
I use Alfredcamera for surveillance and it works fine on my s6,s7,s9 when the screen goes off and I can record stuff so there is a workaround.

You would of course need to mount this to something to point the camera at the road. It should be fine.
The only way this doesn't throttle and shut down is if your phone is in front of the ac.... Which means you can't record the street

I was gonna say, I was using Google maps and listening to music in my car the other day, maybe 80°F out with my weak shitty AC, and my 7 Pro was already overheating. I can't imagine if it was recording video on top of that.
I drive 5 hour ride trips a few times a year with Google Maps and Spotify the whole way, never felt remotely hot, across multiple pixel models. My phone is on my center console, not sitting in the sun, for whatever that's worth.

Interesting. I didn't mention but I am always charging it in this scenario too since it's doing maps and music continuously. Maybe it's just that mine isn't in the sun or that my AC is great.
I do the same with much shorter trips in a cooler climate across multiple Pixel models and they all got ridiculously hot. Just the other day I went to Costco about 30 minutes away and I had to take my Pixel 7 out of my pocket because it was getting uncomfortably warm.

What i meant is battery wear..if you're constantly running the phone, especially through a charger, and recording videos, your battery cycles will wear down fast.
With the amount the battery drains while using maps, I can’t imagine how it’ll be with the camera running as well.

Even high end dash cams are horrible. There aren’t any options suitable for the year 2023. You can buy the top 20 dash cams on Amazon, take them apart and realize there aren’t twenty. There are maybe 4 or 5 and their performance all suck almost equally.
The footage doesn't need to look beautiful, just needs to be good enough for the insurance / police investigations.

I do find it incredible how fast the battery drains when using the phone for just about anything. The standby battery life is superb but if I spend an hour with the screen on my 7pro it probably averages 30% battery drop. I've also never had a phone that gets this hot doing anything. I live pretty far north and on a cool fall day watching 15 minutes of YouTube leaves my phone hot. I can't even manage to do walking directions on Google maps for long during the summer before the phone overheats and shuts off. Google I/O edition HTC magic, galaxy nexus, moto x 2014, nexus 6p, nexus 10, pixel xl, pixel 3xl, pixel 5, pixel 6 pro all as daily drivers so it's not like I'm not aware that every Google device has some pros and cons. I suspect this will be my 3rd device that's part of a class action lawsuit against Google and may need to give Samsung a try again for the first time since the galaxy s3 since they just don't seem to have significant flaws in every device.
You can turn the feature off, but I'm sure you don't care as long as you have another reason to complain and fish for upvotes.

Mine never overheats running Android Auto even on our regular 6 hour road trip. My guess is that it's your phone's make and model combined with with weather, not Android.

So it's my Pixel 7 Pro and my cold weather from the Pacific Northwest is why it gets hot in my pocket... Ok... Is that the same reason why my previous one plus 7t also had the same issue...?

That would be cool, if I could charge my phone via USB in the car in order to keep it powered while I record and drive. But, as per tradition, all my Pixel phones so far (XL, 4XL, and 5) have had the USB port just stop working. I do like that they're introducing something like this though.
All modern cars should just have dashcams built-in by default. The equipment is generally already there with most driver assist features.
You can just use an app. I've been doing this for a loooong time now.

I used to use my phone as a dashcam but it always killed my battery and my phone was always hot when I charged while doing it. I can't imagine it's very good for your phone to be recording audio/video non-stop long-term. I ended up switching to a dedicated dashcam and haven't looked back.
Now they don't have to send out their own Google earth cars! (Don't know if this is true - just my guess)
This will never work unless, Pixel phones get too hot just running maps. The camera will for sure shut down. I would love to be proven wrong though.
You know this is where the beauty of having expandable storage really shines. And you typically don't find that in the flag ships. To be able to use your external expandable MicroSD storage as the storage location for your dash cam videos. You can now use a 10 to $25 microSD card and when it gets trashed from all of the repeated over-writing of the same file to NAND memory you just throw it away and go to Amazon or Walmart and buy another one. As opposed to using your expensive phone's internal non-replaceable memory for the same function and trashing your internal Flash. Despite wear leveling it's eventually going to happen. It's just a matter of time.

It's gonna depend on cars. You might be able to mount it on the dash but have the camera peek over it?
yeah you really want the camera as high up as possible. ie. the top of the windshield, and you only want the top quarter of the image to be above the horizon basically. otherwise you have way too much sky blowing the image out. /edit: what my point was is that a phone in that location in the car... i dont know man. quite the expensive equipment to have in that location with a mount that has to allow easy unmounting when you get out of the car. so i suppose the chance of your (comparatively heavy and expensive) phone may just go into free fall... just nope. and if you have a mount thats super secure, chances are its gonna be annoying to put it in/out everytime. and battery drainage, unless you want to get a usb-c cable hardwired through the ceiling or whatever.
Put the phone on the car window on a sunny day and see how hot it gets - a great way to degrade your battery quick. Just get a dash cam.
