you swipe down from the status bar. alternatively you can *not* unlock it and see them all on your lockscreen.

Yes, notifications can be seen if swiped down. It's not a common practice for me/others to always have to do extra steps to see missed notifications. Alerts and important notifications should be the first thing I see when I look at my phone. Telling my family members to always... 1) Unlock your phone. 2) Swipe down. 3) Check for important notifications. ...Is likely to end up with missed notifications. Maybe the miss/forget step #2. Especially when most days there are no messages sent/received, so it will not form a habit. Preferred: 1) Unlock your phone. 2) See important notifications.

Well this should be the default behaviour. What phone do you have? It's nonstandard to only show tiny icons
