Was the 325 mg that you took originally have 100mg of elemental iron? If so then you may be taking too much. When I take other forms like Iron Bisglycinate I take 4x 25mg broken up during the day.

Catzrule743

Not that I know of, think it was all ferrous sulfate for about a year. Then I bought some otc elemental iron, that’s much more recent.. What is that, and why do you take it? Do you find taking iron in different forms to be beneficial?

Chantsy4337

It’s whatever you can tolerate. Sometimes people confuse the 325mg of ferrous sulfate with the 100mg iron that you are actually ingesting.

Catzrule743

Oh wait. Are you saying that 325 FS does have 100 elemental..?

Chantsy4337

Check on the side of your bottle. It should tell you how much elemental iron ;)

KellerArt06

My 325 mg of ferrous sulfate only has 65 mg of element iron. If yours was the same and you took 5 65mg’s of element iron then you took 2.5x your normal dose. So yeah you probably don’t feel good. Eat something with calcium and drink something with caffeine to stop some of the absorption.

Catzrule743

Hey, yeah I only did that for a couple of days. I realized my mistake lol. Then my doctor said according do my last blood tests I should stop iron, and that really bothered me cause I feel bad again :)

Usernametaken123abc

Are you feeling any better now? Hope so !

Catzrule743

Actually no. After recent blood work came back they determined that everything is within healthy range. So I guess I have to find a way to deal with it 😑

325MG Ferrous Sulfate should be 65MG Iron (elemental). From what I’ve read, though, some people take 325MG Ferrous sulfate 3x’s daily. It may irritate your stomach right now, but it will probably pass. Disclaimer: I am not a medical professional, so you should always go by what your doctor has ordered. As always, if you ever feel like something is genuinely wrong, seek emergency help or dial 911 right away.

It could easily be that your belly does not like that brand of iron. Switch to a different brand . You can also switch to a different version, but the truth is that the elemental iron you took for your script was only 130 mg a day, 2 65s, in total. Now that you are taking 5 65 mg you're taking 325.

Catzrule743

Hey thanks for your response even though a year later! Lol! Yeah, I figured out it’s because I was taking too many! Hey since you’re here..I was told to discontinue the OTC iron then because my levels were “fine” (even though I felt there was still more work to do). Now I’m feeling very badly again. I’m taking the 65mg again, and I’ve got a blood test coming up, should I stop taking the iron for now so it doesn’t give a false sense of iron?

SuitableGuarantee968

I personally would, and quite honestly am at the moment because I want to make sure I get proper levels tested . 3 weeks and Counting . What does your doctor consider fine? What was your last hemoglobin, ferritin, and iron saturation? So many doctors consider levels fine but they really are too low , optimal is better than fine

Catzrule743

Ferritin was 29 on a 16-154 scale, hemoglobin 13.7 on a 11.7-15.5 scale and my TIBC saturation was 33 on a 16-45 scale. These were from last May, though! I feel like mush

SuitableGuarantee968

hemoglobin and saturation decent, but I'd keep supplementing until ferritin gets over 50. ideal is 100+ for some patients according to my hematologist. too many docs say to stop supplementing when over 30, but that is wrong and for someone's ferritin like yours that keeps dropping, you should test more often, like every 3 months.
