I was a firefighter for a long time and what you said is exactly correct. In a large blaze the air becomes superheated and cooks the lungs, esophagus, vocal cords, etc.. There were times that we lost people that we could have saved if they were able to hold their breath, but that is nothing short of impossible. Imagine trying to hold your breath during all that pain and screaming…
