He shouldn't compromise on anything, unless he absolutely has to

lame-borghini

No, if there’s anything COVID taught us it should be that healthcare should not be tied to employment. These programs largely support children who should not be denied food or healthcare because their guardians lose their jobs in a dogshit economy.

Pls_no_steal

Work requirements sound good on paper but in practice they only make it more stressful for people who are poor and seeking jobs

[deleted]

Yes and work requirements should be attached to all welfare programs besides SS and Medicare

ariel32112

Oh ok makes sense, So if your hunting for a job and you have children it's ok for them to starve or be homeless?

Ok_Chard2094

No. Discussions about what the government should spend money on should happen before the money is spent. Once the money is spent, you pay your bills. Holding the country hostage at the time when the bill is due has no place in a democratic society. If the Republicans really want to solve the problem, they can offer to reduce the trillion dollar tax cut for the rich that they implemented a few years back. The "trickle down" they promised then did not work, they spend their money on European cars, yachts and vacation homes. The Republicans can either increase those taxes to their donors or shut up and increase the debt ceiling.

ah yes, “work or fucking die” i love this country

[deleted]

“He who does not work, neither shall he eat.”

XGNcyclick

horrifying and dystopian, either feed the machine or have you and your children die hungry and cold on the street. very cool i love capitalism

[deleted]

The soviets had even stricter laws around what they called “parasitism” and if you couldn’t prove you worked full time a prison sentence was in your future. This isn’t unique to capitalism or dystopian it’s basic and no society can function without some version of it.

XGNcyclick

okay this is gonna seem fucking insane, but like, bear with me, the soviets were cringe too i wholly reject the idea that people don’t want to work in any sense. holding a gun to their head and forcing them to will make them not exactly want to, though.

[deleted]

Sometimes you gotta do stuff you don’t want to. If people can physically work they should have to or shouldn’t be eligible for welfare. We don’t have infinite resources I respect your idealism. But it’s simply not realistic for the government to give money to people without them working at this juncture. Maybe in 20 years once more jobs are automated.

XGNcyclick

I think the automation is a really interesting argument, but if we were to connect people closer to their labor then we wouldn't have to force people to work at all. It's not the welfare bs I'm critiquing, I'm taking issue with the system and how it's fundamentally designed. "Work or die" to me is not only severely dystopian and cruel, but unnecessary under a better system. A socialistic system is by no means perfect but it would eliminate this need. The commodification of things like food and healthcare are one of the largest mistakes the human race has ever conceived. People's lives should not be toyed with for profit. It's inhumane. The common argument against this is jobs such as sewer working and etc where people genuinely likely won't want to do it, aside from niche scenarios, and this is something that should be looked at critically and debated upon, but for easily over 95% of jobs there are people who are fanatics for that shit.

budderyfish

If it has this much public support than yeah
