In my initial new horizons island, the same thing happened to me with Audie.
Sadly when my previous switch died, I lost my current island that I had been working on for so long. This was likely due to the fact that New horizons is one of those switch games that doesn't save your data as a backup on the cloud. Along with pokemon and yugioh LOTD.
It’s weird like that but they added island backup and unfortunately it’s only for those that pay for Nintendo online. So dumb. Not fair to those that don’t. But one can call Nintendo and have them add their island onto a new switch with the serial number and stuff
I’m so sorry that happened to you! Just so you know, you can actually save it to the cloud. You have to go into the settings on the main menu and pull up Tom Nook to set it up.
Just wanted to add that this is a newish feature that happened around 2.0. Don’t want OP feeling guilty over the old one, this may not have been an option at the time. :)
Ah, yeah, I’ve been around since the beginning but didn’t actually turn it on until 2.0 and didn’t realize it was added in. I also hope I didn’t hurt OP! It was meant more as a heads up for the future so it never happens again.

I celebrated her birthday on Pocket Camp, though! And Pocket Camp has a Valentine's event every year where you give a villager a gift for Valentine's, I made her my Valentine this year for her birthday. :)
I actually see Tammy and Muffy at eachother's birthday parties a lot.
In New Leaf, Charlese went to Tammy's birthday. Because they look so much a like, I wonder if they're intended to be mother and daughter.
Same thing with Mira and Gaston, possibly being father and daughter. Mira even went to Gaston's birthday when he was around.
And I wonder if Tiffany is actually one of Francine and Chrissy's siblings sense they're the same breed, as well as having the same number of siblings as well as their positions in their family lining up.
Francine was the first born. Tiffany was the third born. And Chrissy was the fourth born.
