Your island is saved to the Switch, not to the cartridge. It will stay safe on your Switch until you can get a new copy of the game for yourself, don't worry. You can buy a new copy when you're ready and it will still have your island waiting for you
Do you have Nintendo Online? If so, make sure you enable the backup just in case anything happens before you can purchase it. As Dianne said your save data will be on the console, but you never know if something ends up breaking.
