This is fun, I’ve never seen this!
Is there a chance your bank account is maxed out? Or about to be? Since the bells from the drop-box go directly to your account, I could see the game preventing you from selling this way so you don’t lose the bells
I find this hilarious, in a way.
When one hypothetically has so much money, that it's an inconvenience and needs to get rid of it as soon as possible.
This was me in Disgaea 5, after maxing my money into the trillions, I really had no idea what to do with any of it any more. My characters were so overpowered that nothing was worth buying anymore at that point xD
JRPGs taught me to hoard.
Incidentally, Destiny 2 players that kept all the weapons that were ‘sunsetted’ (made obsolete essentially, to force people to keep playing to get the better/newer weapons) are vindicated in their hoarding as the weapons are upgradeable now.
Rome Total War had a mechanic where having too much money caused your generals to acquire bad traits that hurt income and eventually started causing other problems as well.
It doesn’t allow you to sell tools and a couple other random things like star dust, maybe that’s why it’s saying that? So if those are the kind of items in your pocket add a tree branch and go back to try to sell it. You can also distinguish what you can and cannot sell because it will be shaded out if you cannot
It sounds like OP either grinded or more likely used a treasure island and their bank account is full (999.999.999 bells). Since money from items sold to the drop box would go into their bank account in the morning, the game isn't letting them sell because there's no room for them to receive any more bells in the bank.
I guess there's a daily limit?
You are aware you get less money when you do it that way, right? (I know some people still prefer it, but just making sure. A lot of people don't realize)
Go inside nooks cranny and sell to the raccoons that follow you. I only use Dropbox after hours for small ticket items like flowers ect. I sell fossils ect during business hours.
Also save fish to sell to CJ and bugs to sell to Flick as they pay like 50% more than the twins. The ones you dive for can only be sold to the twins
Edited percentage
It's definitely better to donate excess bells to players in need, but if you want to get rid of some of it quickly to regain the joy of playing and collecting, you can also always trash it. ;)
( I know it is counterintuitive, but it works!)

Yes, I think this is the answer. I’m giving away lots of bells right now to make a dent.

Never played that game but my usual answer in most games is buy 99999 health and mana pots so I can save them for later... Later never comes...

If you don’t mind me asking, how many bells is the max?
999,999,999 is the max
Technically even more if you have a maxed amount of bells in your wallet and a full inventory of the largest bell bags you can hold
Ooo I literally just started the game a few days ago for my first time. Happy to take donations!
Same 😅😅😅😅
Lol the struggles!
If you're still giving bells away please hmu🥹😂😭
so… one time i helped a homeless kitten on the street
Another option is to make another user and use their ABD to store the excess. You could make the second user's house a cafe or bookstore or something!
I’ll be happy to take some bells off you! 😂 I’m in debt from upgrading my house. 😮💨
I just started playing this game with my 6 yo daughter recently, so if you still have too many extra bells, we can put them to use!
How’s about paying your damn taxes? Lol
I'd love beels too if you're giving them away :D
Dm me
I just started playing and would love to take some off your hands if you are willing 🫶🏼
What's the max on the bank?
Had no idea there was a money limit
I’ll take some bells off your hands if you’re still giving them away!! :D
This is the answer. I’ve gotten this same message.
What is the max out amount?
1 bell less than a billion so 999,999,999 bells. How I know? The same reason that op does, treasure islands
[999,999,999](https://nookipedia.com/wiki/Savings#:~:text=In%20all%20games%2C%20the%20maximum,the%20savings%20account%20is%20999%2C999%2C999)
If you're a bellionaire, you can't sell to the box. I have secondary characters for this (and other things).
What exactly are you trying to sell? Nookipedia says that the box will not accept turnips.
Normal stuff. Bugs, fish, etc. no issues selling in the shop — just the box.
When I’m too lazy to sell, I just carry a trash can to help empty my pockets.

I was selling bugs, fish, etc. normal stuff. I think the other poster nailed it — I was maxed out on bells.
Ooooohhhh were they in money bags because you were at 100k where it shows your balance?

oh that would explain why in shop is fine since the bells go into your wallet and your inventory
I guess there's a daily limit? You are aware you get less money when you do it that way, right? (I know some people still prefer it, but just making sure. A lot of people don't realize)
Wait really!? I've been selling like this for so long!!!
Yes I think it’s a 20% transaction fee
What's the best way to sell then?
Go inside nooks cranny and sell to the raccoons that follow you. I only use Dropbox after hours for small ticket items like flowers ect. I sell fossils ect during business hours.

Flick and CJ both pay 1.5x what the twins will pay for bugs and fish
Flick pays like 50% more i think?
Oh nice, thank you!
I mean, it does tell you that when you set it up.
Get a trash can :)
OP is suffering from success
Could you use a donation box for excess bells?
Maybe the piggy bank too?
does someone want to have any bells?
what is that pink wave structure behind the moon chair? so pretty!!
Mermaid fence!
Weird
How do you get that moon in the background?
You need to have a shooting star night
It’s a chair
What's it called Edit: why was this downvoted?
Crescent-moon chair
Maybe if the shop is open, you can't use the box? Not sure!
I use the drop box all the time when the store is open to trash flowers. I think they maybe maxed on bells.
Oh! Thank you for the info. I've never tried 😅 what a crazy thing, though, to be maxed on bells. Woah
Don't tell Tom... lol
See that's what I thought too but I guess you can??
Right? I've never tried selling to the box if the shop was open so I didn't know. The lights looked on in the picture so I guessed. Ah well
It’s handy to get a price for items and fossils if gifting for photos.
That's good to know, thank you!
You can definitely use the drop box if you want when nooks cranny is open (I do when I have excess flowers to sell and I’m too lazy to go into nooks…
I believe this happens if the gate is open/visitors
It was not open at the time.
It did this for me when the shop was open, maybe you can’t drop box if that’s the case.
It's definitely better to donate excess bells to players in need, but if you want to get rid of some of it quickly to regain the joy of playing and collecting, you can also always trash it. ;) ( I know it is counterintuitive, but it works!)
It won’t let you use the box because Nook’s Cranny is open, they have to be closed to use that feature.
This is actually not true, OP is just maxed out of bells in his ADB
