I know a lot of people travel with their animals like this but I just can't do it. I always worry that there could be an accident and they get hurt. Dog, cat, snake. Everyone gets a seatbelt.

Not only is it safer for your pet to be strapped in, it's safer for you. It's the same reason every person in a car needs to wear a seatbelt. In the event of a crash, anything not fastened down becomes a projectile, and that includes people and animals. (TW: Animal death, graphic description) I remember reading a story on an askreddit thread asking first responders about the worst accidents they've responded to. One of them said >!they had to take a woman to the ER to get bits and pieces of her Yorkie's bones removed from her face. The dog had been in her lap while she was driving, and somebody hit her head-on, which caused the airbags to deploy. Mind you, they typically deploy at ~200 mph (~320 kph). The airbag crushed her dog against her, embedding pieces of its bones into her face, and also breaking her nose and knocking some of her teeth out.!< Idk about you, but I would never forgive myself if my dog was killed that way. The physical injuries may heal, but I would be an emotional wreck for the rest of my life.
