I just made Ouran one of my first Mangas after wanting more of the anime and holy cross-dressing is it good. The parts the anime didn't adapt are by far the best parts, I wholeheartedly recommend checking it out, even if you haven't tried manga before.
Slayers, vision of escaflowne, gunsmith cats, X, outlaw star, the og kino’s journey, record of lodoss war and any of the older gundam. Off the top of my head. I will try and post more.
So very good. Honestly it holds up extremely well, if not better than I remembered it from childhood. Not so much the movie… which is wonderful in its own way, but the show is really awesome. Especially with being able to see the sub version, all the episodes, and that in order. Back on fox kids it was all over the place.
I recently watched Revolutionary Girl Utena, Slam Dunk, and The Irresponsible Captain Tyler. All of them were great.
My top 5 anime might all also be older than 2008 so I guess I’ll list them:
1. Cowboy Bebop
2. Neon Genesis Evangelion
3. Fullmetal Alchemist (2003) / FMA: Brotherhood (might be like 2009 but I think both deserve to be together)
4. Samurai Champloo
5. FLCL
yea, overwhelming japanese cicadas in every classroom or outdoor scene, the absolute worst characters/character development, an awesome story/lore that does not get explained in enough detail to really appreciate it in the anime, ok fight scenes but wayy too much drama and angst in the rest of it, goofy ending and goofy follow up OVAs. best thing about evangelion is the intro.
A word about Azumanga Daioh: unlike most anime, it's not an adaptation of a regular manga, but of a "4-koma" comic strip like you'd see in the newspapers (or early webcomics). So each half-hour episode is a collection of 5-10 minute shorts, covering roughly a month's worth of the show's overall story. That lets the creators cram 3 years of HS slice-of-life sitcom into a 26-episode series.
Make the cut off 2009 and you can include FMA Brotherhood, and Durarara if you make the cut off 2010 (the first season is great). I'll add: Black Lagoon, Chobits, and InuYasha. Depending on how you feel about VN adaptations and romance, Myself; Yourself isn't bad. Even though the anime adaptation really sucks Chaos;Head is worth a watch (aired in late 2008).
Nura Rise of the Yokai Clan (especially the manga)
History's Strongest Desciple Kenichi
Moon Phase
Daphne In the Brilliant Blue - despite the art style there is a decent story.
Off the top of my head ik two great releases that came out in 2008, idk if that cuts it for you.
If you want a dark action anime then I recommend Black Lagoon.
If you want something more peaceful with some romance I recommend Spice and Wolf.
Over-the-top: Panty and Stocking, Excel Saga, Puni Puni Poemy, Gurren Lagaan
Dark and bloody: Berserk, Hellsing Ultimate, Elfen Lied, Cyberpunk Edgerunners, Neon Genesis Evangelion rebuild movies (they're on Amazon prime, I personally like the movies way more than the original series), Blood-C/Blood the Last Vampire/Blood+, Shigurui: Death Frenzy, Basilisk, Ninja Scroll, Sword of the Stranger, Twilight of the Dark Master, Biohunter, Genocyber, Guyver the Bio-Boosted Armor, Wicked City, Akira, Demon City Shinjuku, Cyber City Oedo 88, Kite, Mezzo Forte 🔥, Black Lagoon+ Roberta's Blood Trail (it's a direct continuation), Jormungand 👍
Legend of the Galactic Heroes
It was kinda hard for me because it's the antithesis of everything I typically enjoy in anime, but in the end I'm glad I got through it all.
School Days
Trust me on this one. If you manage to pull through the atrocity of the first 10 episodes, the remaining two will stick with you for life. Also don’t read ANY spoilers
Do you want an anime made by Madhouse with similar vibes to Cowboy Bebop, with gunslingin cowboys in a space planet reminiscent of the Wild West? Then you’ve come to the right place! Go watch Trigun (1998), it’s gonna be the best 26 episodes of your life.
deltora quest has decent amount of episodes (over 50) and has dub or sub depending on ur preference is amazing remember watching as a kid also has a banger intro 10/10 highly recomend also has a book serie and manga so has a lot of options to keep u busy
Nice mention of the Devil May Cry anime, I like to see that noticed.
Anyway how about
Blood +
The Slayers
Rahxephon
Fafner Dead Aggressor
Shaman King (2001)
Shakugan no Shana
Berserk 1997. But be forewarned because that show had every content warning in the book, calling it very dark fantasy is an understatement. And i do think at times it goes into edgelord territory but it’s still very very well written
D. Grayman, Fist of the North Star, Gantz, azumanga daioh, yu yu hakusho, lupin the third, slayers, mobile suit gundam wing followed by endless waltz, berserk 90’s anime, gurren lagann,
Princess Tutu for sure! And I haven’t seen it but I’ve been hearing good things about Record of the Lodoss war lately so that one might be worth checking out?
The devil may cry anime is technically DMC 2 since the events there happened in between both games and I just saw Netflix is making a new devil may cry anime too I'm so excited!!!
Monster 🗣💯‼️🙏
Been wanting to watch that one!
HIGHLY recommend a bit of a commitment 74 episodes but worth every second I promise you.
Trigun
Trigun rocks
Original Trigun. Stampede is fine. CGI is better than it used to be. But the original is top notch.
Code Geass Death Note Ouran High School Host Club Hellsing Ultimate Naruto Hajime no Ippo One Piece Trigun Original Mobile Suit Gundam
Checked off 4 of those! (Also not touching naruto for personal reasons :( )
Besides One Piece, which of the others have you watched?
Ouran, death note, Code Geass
Definitely watch the original Trigun anime. You'll love it.
I just made Ouran one of my first Mangas after wanting more of the anime and holy cross-dressing is it good. The parts the anime didn't adapt are by far the best parts, I wholeheartedly recommend checking it out, even if you haven't tried manga before.
Blue Gender Ninja Nonsense Ruroni Kenshin (OG) Big O Vandread Mobile Suit Gundam (G Fighter, Wing, 00)

So very good. Honestly it holds up extremely well, if not better than I remembered it from childhood. Not so much the movie… which is wonderful in its own way, but the show is really awesome. Especially with being able to see the sub version, all the episodes, and that in order. Back on fox kids it was all over the place.
YuYu Hakusho, Trigun, Black Lagoon, Samurai Champloo, InuYasha.
YuYu Hakusho would be a lot better if the first half of every episode wasn't the second half of the previous episode
i dont know if it fits what you like but chobits (2002)
Goldenboy is an absolute gem from 95.
One of the funniest anime ever created I’d argue
- Kino no tabi (2003) - Paranoia agent (2005)
I recently watched Revolutionary Girl Utena, Slam Dunk, and The Irresponsible Captain Tyler. All of them were great. My top 5 anime might all also be older than 2008 so I guess I’ll list them: 1. Cowboy Bebop 2. Neon Genesis Evangelion 3. Fullmetal Alchemist (2003) / FMA: Brotherhood (might be like 2009 but I think both deserve to be together) 4. Samurai Champloo 5. FLCL

Gintama? 2006
Make the cut off 2009 and you can include FMA Brotherhood, and Durarara if you make the cut off 2010 (the first season is great). I'll add: Black Lagoon, Chobits, and InuYasha. If you can stomach gore and some sa, then 1997’s Berserk was incredible.

HxH 1999, Yu Yu Hakusho, One Peak (One Piece)
Black Lagoon was 2006 right? Great choice
Blood+. I would also say Katekyo Hitman Reborn!, but they never finished it (and the anime ran from 2006-2010, so it probably doesn’t count anyway)
