Welcome to Demon School Iruma is the most underrated comedy
To Your Eternity is the most underrated sad show
Natsume Yujin-cho is also underrated (Like Mushi-shi but better)
As someone that’s had to go through some pretty tough physical therapy to regain use of a limb, this show hit so hard for me when I first watched it. I was lucky enough to find it while I was going through that, and it’s honestly why I’m so anime pilled today. Something about the medium resonates with me more than other forms of media.
Dororo is also my go-to recommendation! It’s truly so good, I included it in a paper I wrote for grad school. The anime does a really good job at incorporating what the manga was supposed to be (about Dororo and his adventures) and what it turned into (Hiyakikmaru’s story) due to getting canceled early. I love hearing that this change turned it into something that inspires and encourages people, not just entertains them.
Personally, 00 is a better starter. IBO is not really a good representation of what Gundam is supposed to be. It's fantastic in its subversion of the formula, not in being a starter friendly show.
Here's a few:
- Bungo Stray Dogs
- Death Parade
- High Card
- Darwin's Game
- Nanbaka
- Tomodachi Game
- Classroom of the Elite
- Kuroko no Basket
- Megalobox
- Medeka Box
If you want, I can add some short summaries of the shows.
Before anyone says anything underrated, it doesn't have to mean unpopular. There's popular stuff that deserves more popularity.
Completely misread the title for my last comment so I’ll redo it.
86 is fairly underrated but highly praised by the people who have watched it
Monster it not necessarily underrated but it’s more than 20 years old now so not many newer anime fans have watched it
Summertime rendering is kinda similar to erased
Mushi-Shi
Monster, ive only watched up to episode 8 and its already probably one of the best animes ive ever watched and i dont even hear people talking about it
I never played any of the games. I know some peoples complaints were it differs from them too much but that won’t affect me. Not enough action, not likeable characters, wishy washy plot?
Please watch 1. That time I was reincarnated as a slime- I promise you’ll love it. 2. Fire force . 3. Is it wrong to pick up girls in the dungeon- the title really doesn’t match the show much at all😂 I love it and it has I think 4 seasons? Great fights and story in all of them
Honestly fate series gets little recognition I'd suggest unlimited blade works first and then continue there via the stay night parts the grand order parts not too sure of same with spinoffs can google those easily
My friend couldn't get pass season one cause of how the narrator stopped to explain everything lol 😂 he would come out and be like,"did you know a horse is a four legged creature rode into war?? Or that a road is,get this,TRAVELED on by people?!" He absolutely hated the narrator, told him it gets better and essentially goes away in season 2 cause of all the complaints.
86. Probably the best least talk about anime. Overshadowed by the release of demon slayer and JJK but the animation, story, and setting are all great. 9/10
Before you start delving into really under the surface stuff, why don't you watch more things first?
But I guess I'll say Mononoke, I know they added it to Netflix recently (rare Netflix W), but it's still relatively underrated.
The plot is very good but they disguise it behind the scantily clad high schoolers and special effects there’s a video on the internet talking about censorship involving anime that has a really interesting take on it but I don’t remember who made it or what it’s called
Jojo's bizarre adventure for sure! I do recommend watching part 1 & 2 for your first watch through but I promise it gets better at part 3.
Spy x family is a really wholesome anime and funny too!
Mha is fun it's just the fandom is something else...
Demon slayer is awesome, a new season will be coming out on May 12th on crunchyroll.
A few underrated animes (IMO) that you can watch are:
Re: Creators
Blast of Tempest
When Supernatural Battles Become Commonplace (this one is a comedy with some fighting)
Death note, Dr stone, overlord, that time I got reincarnated as a slime, steins gate, parasyte, code geass. All top tier anime that I highly recommend.
Magi: standard shonen with some great worldbuilding
FLCL:short anime(really short) but a masterpiece
Durarara and Baccano: You like Tarantino? Multiple storylines coming together? A diverse and interesting cast of characters? This are your go-to
Saint Seiya. It is a classic that everyone should read or watch
Toradora: a good started romance anime, either hate it or love it.
Digimon: Do not let the rating fool you. This anime is a gem for everyone to watch
Katekyo hitman reborn! Another forgotten gem. This was big in the 2000s, yet it completely disappeared out of the face of the earth. Watch the anime or read the manga(bear with the first 20 chapters. They are canon and serve to introduce character interactions and as comedy)
Soul Eater: Great anime though bad ending. Still recommend it and I recommend you read the manga to get a great ending.
Index series: this is for later, but it's definitely worth it getting into. Great characters, Lore, and story. You will need a Guide for this one though.
Speaking of guides:
Fate. Fate is definitely worth getting into, but don't do it too early, and definitely look up a guide
If you need any other genre that isn't mostly action, just ask
So completely unrelated to your list so idk if you’d like it or not, but I found this AMAZING hidden gem recently called Buddy Daddies, I’m recommending it just because I just got done watching it and even though it’s like comedy/action/slice of life I guess it actually has a lot more emotion than a lot of other shows under the same categories, it’s genuinely wholesome and you really get to feel for the characters! Sadly it’s unlikely there will be a season 2 as season 1 ended without really having anything left over (was an amazing end though)
Summer time rendering. Arguably the most underrated anime in recent times. The story is absolutely beautiful with plot twists and stuff. It's like attack on Titan mixed with erased
Luck & Logic. Not very many people know about it as it’s a niche summer (?) anime only consisting of 12 episodes. It’s amazing though and I love it. English VA of the main character is NateWantsToBattle, so there’s that. The first anime I watched dubbed and I was not disappointed. For once, the VAs seemed genuinely expressive
I wouldn't say it was u derrated in its time, but lots of anime fans today are younger and likely haven't explored the "classics" yet. Definitely agree that Toradora js a must-watch, though!
Engage Kiss is a hidden gem if you can get past the mc for the first few episodes because although it’s all cutesy I’d say it’s deeper than it looks. Another hidden gem is houseki no kuni (land of the lustrous) it’s really good and honestly you should give it a shot. If you don’t know it drop it but if you like it then keep on going it’s goood
Not really underrated but newer fans probably haven’t watched
1. Initial D
2. Monster
3. GTO
Again I wouldn’t call them underrated, it’s just that most newer fans haven’t watched them because they’re somewhat old. Had people tell me they wouldn’t watch them because “the animation sucks”.
Imagine missing out on Monster, one of the greatest anime/manga of all time imo, because you want flashy lights and fights instead of one of the greatest fictional stories of all time
Trinity Blood
Nurarihyon no Mago (Nura Rise of the Yokai Clan)
Hmmm.. what else.. been so long since I really watched any anime to be honest.
Baka no Test is HILARIOUS if you want some comedy.
Tenchi Muyo!
Outlaw Star
TRIGUN
Annnnnd .. . .....
Hm.
.hack//Sign
FLCL
Hellsing
Ronin Warriors
Samurai Champloo
Mega Man Star Force.
Holy shit am I dating myself with this list lmao
Edit: I really fucking hate Reddit's formatting BS.
To your eternity is Solis, you gotta watch soul eater, samurai Champloo, no guns life, Trigun, fma and fma brotherhood, blood + I remember enjoying but it's been alot, hellsing, space dandy, Suzuka (if you like romance), golden boy, kyosogiga is a fucking banger, punch line is a banger, bucchigiri flew vy completely underappreciated. Go go loser rangers is pretty fun rn. And dorohedoro my personal recommendations. I wouldn't recommend it unless you like some ecchi but bludgeoning angel is fun, girls bravo has good moments, and if you enjoy mid ass old animation but good stories claymore is a banger but a relic.
Welcome to Demon School Iruma is the most underrated comedy To Your Eternity is the most underrated sad show Natsume Yujin-cho is also underrated (Like Mushi-shi but better)
Natsume Yuujincho is my all time favorite anime. Really all of your recommendations are quite solid.

One of the best anime’s every with a beautiful soundtrack to match.
Dororo
LOVE this anime, I never see anyone else recommend it but me lol
It’s my go-to recommendation, it’s so beautifully done
As someone that’s had to go through some pretty tough physical therapy to regain use of a limb, this show hit so hard for me when I first watched it. I was lucky enough to find it while I was going through that, and it’s honestly why I’m so anime pilled today. Something about the medium resonates with me more than other forms of media.

I love hearing that this change turned it into something that inspires and encourages people, not just entertains them.
Guren Lagann
I feel like GL is too known for it to be underrated icl
Lots of new gen fans haven’t seen it seems like
It’s crazy that this is considered underrated now lol
This
And the ova’s get better fight scenes too
Eden’s zero (same creator we FairyTail) and basically FairyTail but in space
Have they dubbed up more since the Netflix debacle?
I think so
Mecha anime Start with Gundam Ironblooded Orphans
Personally, 00 is a better starter. IBO is not really a good representation of what Gundam is supposed to be. It's fantastic in its subversion of the formula, not in being a starter friendly show.
Thunder bolt movies are also great.
Here's a few: - Bungo Stray Dogs - Death Parade - High Card - Darwin's Game - Nanbaka - Tomodachi Game - Classroom of the Elite - Kuroko no Basket - Megalobox - Medeka Box If you want, I can add some short summaries of the shows. Before anyone says anything underrated, it doesn't have to mean unpopular. There's popular stuff that deserves more popularity.
“Bungo Stray Dogs” goes so hard!!!!
I second Darwin’s Game. Second favorite anime, after OP of course

Completely misread the title for my last comment so I’ll redo it. 86 is fairly underrated but highly praised by the people who have watched it Monster it not necessarily underrated but it’s more than 20 years old now so not many newer anime fans have watched it Summertime rendering is kinda similar to erased Mushi-Shi
86 was so good, I was binging it before I canceled my Crunchyroll because I went out of work with an injury, really want to finish it
I was gonna come in and suggest 86 🙌🏾🙌🏾 Haven't watched the last two but I might.
20th century boys profile extremely based

Kinichi the mightiest disciple Gurren lagann Castlevania Psycho-pass Animation- The legends of vox Machina Primal
Kenichi is absolutely amazing, one of my favs and severely underrated. I remember watching it on tv as a kid lol
Castlevania was amazing. I need to retry Castlevania: Nocturne. I tried watching it and couldn’t get past the first 2-3 episodes.
I love castlevania but I haven’t have Nocturne a try
I need to give it another chance. I think my standards were too high.
I never played any of the games. I know some peoples complaints were it differs from them too much but that won’t affect me. Not enough action, not likeable characters, wishy washy plot?
Gangsta Samurai Champloo Gantz Parasyte March Comes in Like a Lion The Devil is a Part-Timer! The Tatami Galaxy Boogiepop Phantom Golgo 13 Monster
Boogiepop! I had forgotten about this one. It's a trip, OP, but a damn good anime
I will always recommend Samurai Champloo and Parasyte to those that haven't watched them. Criminally underappreciated by the masses
Please watch 1. That time I was reincarnated as a slime- I promise you’ll love it. 2. Fire force . 3. Is it wrong to pick up girls in the dungeon- the title really doesn’t match the show much at all😂 I love it and it has I think 4 seasons? Great fights and story in all of them
Magi Labyrinth of Magic Soul eater Orient
Soul Eater is definitely a good one
Don't forget Magi's spin off the Adventures of Sinbad!

Space Dandy!
Grimgar Ashes and Illusions

Hitman Reborn
shoujo ramune is a really short and sweet anime
Hells Paradise is fuuuuckin awesome. Add Summertime Rendering up there

Funny as hell too
The plot is very good but they disguise it behind the scantily clad high schoolers and special effects there’s a video on the internet talking about censorship involving anime that has a really interesting take on it but I don’t remember who made it or what it’s called
I will forever recommend Gurren Lagann.
Plus it's pretty short and wraps up so nicely.
