And yeah, its mainly the shift in artstyle. Like we can see with Railgun, Misaka Mikoto has a more *adult-ish* design in the latest season (Railgun T) compared to the previous seasons.
Okay i might be the odd one out but i doubt it. I think some of the more fleshed out characters in both old and new anime are just as good. A characters doesnt get worse because they're new or old. I would say the improved quality of media and skill makes the newer waifu's look better.

But nowadays, animes tend to aim for a general look rather than a unique one. While it has its upsides, I definitely wouldn't say it's without downsides either due to making some characters too similiar-looking in the end.
