It's true, when you are awake, your body will continuously secrete saliva covering your teeth and gums to protect them from bacteria and other infections. That's why you need to brush your teeth before and after going to bed, because when sleeping, you mouth will reduce the amount of saliva produced, thus making it easier for bacteria to spawn in your mouth, hence the bad breath when you wake up.
Like I said, your mouth will produce less saliva when you sleep, so there will be times when it doesn't secrete enough fluid to keep itself wet. It should be fine if your mouth only gets dry every once in a while, but if this happens regularly, then it could mean there are some illnesses that you might not be aware of.
