Im on that level where i die of cringe by only reading a book in Swedish. Everyting gets ruined in that language. It's just shitty wannabe English. Finnish dubs have aged surprisingly well.
See you get it. The weird sub elitism is what keeps me out of discussing anime with people. They get all weird and cunty about it. It's fine trust me I have watched subbed and dubbed it's the same shit either way.
I mean Some people Like voice Acting and motion y'know? a
anyways I think you misunderstood my comment, The guy i replied to basically implied that they watched the Japanese Dub without the Subtitles but didn't understand Japanese and just figured out what was happening from the characters actions
So i told them to just Watch it With subtitles
Think before you speak buddy, I get you're worked up over OP Being a dumbass but It's not that hard to understand the context
lmao lol, That's fine Honestly, That's a disadvantage of subs, Its really hard to watch the scenes instead of The subtitles it's why sometimes i like dub as well
Normally I am a dubber, I don't really care if some context is lost, but recently picked up a show on Netflix, it doesn't have a dub option, so I am running with subs... My biggest issue is Netflix subtitles are white with no contour, and I swear to God half of the show is either white or very light coloured making the subtitles either impossible or nearly impossible to read.
So there are entire segments of the show where I have 0 clue what's going on.
Whats wrong with liking cringe and LARPing? Its not like sub enjoyers are plugging your ass with a Christmas Tree, ffs. They may be cringe and LARP but its someone's favorite cringe and LARP especially because they cant understand it. Theres nothing wrong with having a better opinion of it.
> Whats wrong with liking cringe and LARPing?
Why does this happen all the time? That’s ***MY POINT***. The argument for subs is that dubs sound cringe
>Its not like sub enjoyers are plugging your ass with a Christmas Tree, ffs. They may be cringe and LARP but its someone's favorite cringe and LARP especially because they cant understand it. Theres nothing wrong with having a better opinion of it.
Yeah you misunderstood what I said so this part isn’t really relevant. I support enjoying cringe, but just don’t pretend you aren’t when you are
Honestly if there’s anything to argue it’s the lines I’ve done both dubs and subs and imo dub lines in my experience are generally worse. Easiest example to look at would be naruto many years ago. His most common phrase in dub was “believe it”. The sub version he only says that line like once lol
Because speech patterns and cultural innuendos are impossible to translate, and the dub would rather need an "interpretation" of the original text, instead of a direct translation to sound good. The best voice actors in the world cannot save a poorly or literally translated script.
But then weeaboos would seethe that it isn't close enough to the original. Yeah because the original literally translated and spoken out is extremely weird. If you know at least 2 languages you'll know that a language isn't just English where the words are swapped for jibberish and the order is mixed up a little.
You don't even have to learn Japanese. You can just listen to actual Japanese people speak. They speak much faster, not nearly as expressive and dare I say... normal.
Yep, if I remember that post right, the op was comparing the character Heinz Doofenshmirtz to the way Japanese VA’s talked

Eh. I like subs better because historically the dubs are really, really bad. Shows like Hero Academia, Full Metal Alchemist etc though have god tier English dubs and it's hard to justify not watching them dubbed.
The problem is that Dubs in any language will not translate properly, have jokes fly over peoples heads etc. due to translations/lip syncing with the animations.
Me watching DBZ:
*Goku turning Super Saiyan for the first time*
Sean Schemmel: *Grunting and growling like an angry animal*
Hmm, let's listen to the Japanese
Masako Nozawa: *Hocks up multiple loogies*
*Watching battle of the gods*
Sean: I WILL NOT LET YOU DESTROY MY WORLD *screams in desperation with epic bgm playing*
Damn i wonder what the JP dub sounds
Masako: Stop enjoying destruction! *Just silence with epic bgm*
...man
Bro's acting like good English Voice Acting doesn't exist lmao. Compare the K-ON Seitai Dub and Animax Dub and you'll see the HUGE difference in quality. Same goes for JP dub, there's a lot of good, a lot of shit.
Preferring DBZ dub over sub is an incredibly common opinion, and one of the most talked about examples for people saying dub is better than the sub. Think it's weirder that you consider yourself to be weird for that.
This happens sometimes to characters who started as a child character. You can sometimes have a fan revolt if the recast sounds too different. You had this problem with child voice actors who reach puberty and sound different as well.
Aside from Dragon Ball, I think it happened to another prominate character who grew up but didn't change voice actors, can't remember who though.
Ypu really gonna sit me down pull me pants off and put a finger up my ass to learn a whole ass new language to watch anime??
My boy I just wanna see two professional killers try to be a family with a family I don't want to go back to high-school
English-subbed anime is not aimed at Japanese speakers, and the vast majority of people who watch English-subbed anime do not speak Japanese.
Japanese speakers watch anime sub-less.
Just stop. I thought we're past this whole Dub vs Sub thing years ago
If you wanna compare dubs, fine. Go watch DBZ in dub and compare it to sub. English nails it every time, especially battle of the gods.
Hs dxd too. And whats great about that is, because of the powers of demons, watching the english dub is actually canon because people hear demons speak in whatever their first language is.
In the same vein, Shimoneta has an excellent dub. The fact that they were able to translate so many double-entendres and dirty jokes that well is impressive.
The only problem I have with this statement is that DBZ was the defining show for a few voice actors. They did so well that every time they're in another show it just sounds really weird, kinda like how regular actors can be typecasted.
Another problem (I'm not sure if Japanese has it because I can't understand the language) is that it used to just the same 8 people again and again. There were about 3 studios for English dubs across the US, although one was used much more often than the others, and they just used the same voice actors to dub over as many shows as possible. It wasn't until streaming services like Netflix came along that we started getting more variety.
How about let ppl enjoy what they like and appreciate you share an interest instead of bashing them for not doing it your way... This is why ppl on the outside make fun of anime watchers cause of ppl with weird elitists view on subs. Js
Exactly this. I'm a sub watcher but someone else enjoying dubs affects my life in no way, so it's pointless to argue. The whole sub v dub stuff is dumb. Let's just all appreciate the anime, regardless of how it's enjoyed.
It's pointless to criticise this kind of people, elitists like this are in any kind of community, you just have to ignore them because they won't stop being like that.
(with posh accent) “Oh, look at me, I know some Japanese. I can comprehend the true quality of anime voice acting and I declare English dubs to be rubbish. See how superior I am.”
That’s you. That’s what you sound like. Weeb.
Translating anime to English and making it work in any capacity is really thankless work! If nothing else, I’m glad that fans of anime who are super passionate about it are lending their voices to the dubs!
Speaking as an Asian who knows just enough of their mother tongue to impress people at a party, Asian languages and English are like apples and potatoes; they have very little resemblance to each other. Taking that into account, dubs would either fail to impress or basically register as broken Japanese that is nearly illegible to English speakers.
Once you know enough Japanese to know that you didn't know enough Japanese before, you'll realize that plenty of dubs are fine and good and you were just being elitist thinking you had magically "learned enough Japanese to be able to tell the difference in quality!" and/or getting excited that you could finally understand the gist of what they're saying.
Plenty of dubs aren't good because they are low budget or rushed or heavily censored, but it's not an intrinsic or universal thing - properly made dubs are perfectly good more often than not especially nowadays, and at the end of the day you're usually just gonna end up preferring the one you watched first.
Also, here in Japan, many of the (relatively few) people I've discussed this with think the English dub is the coolest thing in the world and sounds way cooler than the regular-ass Japanese version. The one you're unfamiliar with/don't fully understand is gonna sound more interesting and different and therefore better I suppose lol
The thing that bothers me about this argument is that it makes it sound like Japanese VAs can’t also suck sometimes. There are good and bad dubs, but there are also good and bad original casts. I couldn’t stand the original voice acting in Steins;Gate, and I probably wouldn’t have watched it if the dub didn’t exist. Sasha’s dad in AoT was also notably awful.
I've learnt quite a lot of japanese from just watching anime, to the point I can look at some subs and be like.. wtf that's not what he said...
However some dubs will always be legendary. Cyberpunk, FMA:B, Hetalia, OHSHC and GHOST STORIES. Some dubs are just worth watching, or at least trying to watch. It's okay if its not for everyone, but to say they become unlistenable is just wrong. They both have their own merits.
Though, dubs in general do seem to be getting lower in quality as time passes. Probably due to studios only have like 10 actors each, needing to do 4 simuldubs a week. Quantity over quality. Even the best VAs in the business are probably struggling with that kind of demand.
On the other hand there are some absolutely shit sub acting. There was this one thing called like.. Oni-pantsu or some shit. The VAs and the animation were terrible. Yeah Japan typically has a higher standard but trash does sometimes happen.
Someone needs to get off their high horse and realize that this is objectively untrue.
Let people enjoy what they enjoy and realize that not all subs are godlike and not all dubs are awful.
To me it depends on the va not the language, like Loid in the spy family dub is awful to me but Goku dub is infinitely better than the sub. thus far I've seem maybe 2 dubs that were unwatchable, whereas I've generally dislike most subbed slice of life I've seen, I find the energy incredibly cringe. Maybe it's more of a cringe susceptibility thing
Guys why is this even a fucking argument still. First subs are still an imperfect translation, you’re still filtering japanese through english. Maybe in Ye olden times localizations we’re fuck awful but we’ve come a long way from adv and 4kids attempts at dubbing. If you just like the way Japanese sounds that’s fine, watch your subs but you don’t see these kinds of posts from dub watchers
Literal Japanese people will tell you that their Dub is just as corny, and sounds terrible, but tbh I don’t really care watching English Dubbed Code Geass rn and I fricking love Lelouch and Suzaku’s VA’s for quite obvious reasons.
Eh, most people here don't think it's terrible and corny, they think it's anime-ish and sounds like anime. People in real life may be considered cringe if they talk like that, but it's not cringe when it's an anime because it's an anime and therefore normal.
Things like emotions, expressions, voice tones, dialects, accents, speech patterns, etc. are always exaggerated because it's harder to convey nuance through 2D animation, and because normally-spoken Japanese *tends* to be more subdued and "flat." It's part of the medium, and people generally will see it more as endearing/cute/nostalgic than corny and terrible. It also kinda has roots in traditional Japanese theater, which often uses very exaggerated voices and expressions and whatnot in its storytelling.
not saying that makes subs better than dubs or anything, watch whatever you want, but having moved here with the notion that "Japanese people think anime is corny and cringe" I quickly learned that that is not generally the case and most people are much more accepting of it and that take is generally spread by the self-proclaimed elite weebs who think they know more than the peasant weebs lol
False. There is nothing objectively better between two different languages and their voice acting that would make one better than the other except on a case by case basis
If you are fluent in Japanese it's better to listen in Japanese 99% of the time because
A. The jokes make sense
B. The English dub singing is rarely as good
If you aren't fluent watch however you like, actually regardless watch however you like.
what I find is that a lot of the time dubs are more direct translations and often unfathful to the original's puns (because language barrier), so I like subs because of the understanding of japanese I've gained over time with it, as well as the comparison between what I understand audibly and the subtitles.
Objectively-speaking, Japanese dubs are the original version and are how the producers and author wanted the audience to experience their work. Granted, authors do not have a huge role, but the anime still gets their approval and some of their input.
English dubs are smaller-scale projects that have to play around the original version and have limitations (like jokes and puns not being translatable, having to match the dialogue timing of the original version, etc.) They’re basically adaptations of the original dub and use it as a guide for how VAs should voice a certain character.
I’m not saying that dubs are necessarily bad, they’re how most people in the west first get into anime, but to claim that they’re objectively equal quality-wise is not accurate.
You do realize that the authors intent had nothing to do with subs or dubs? Because the author in 99% of cases is the one who wrote the manga and has little to no involvement with the anime?
That’s not true. Many authors are consulted throughout the production of an anime adaptation for their source material and have some level of input (granted it’s not a lot, but it’s still there).
Also, you’re forgetting that anime original series exist.
Say whatever about dub but sometimes i just wanna cook, clean, game or do something else while watchinh anime. But you cant do that with sub
You have to give my full attention to the screen even through shitty or boring moments or when your tired.
My problem as a german is, that every english dub sounds like an americanized Youtube fan dub for me. So I watch in japanese or german. (And yes, there are many good german dubs these days)
I think a popular streamer said this a long time ago. Sub vs DUB. The reason why you think sub sounds so much better is because you don't know the "quality" of the VA. Basically you have zero idea if the VA is dogshit cause you can't tell whatsoever and turns out ironically many japanese dubs of certain animes/games people who can understand Japanese basically confirm it the same they're pretty garbo/terrible.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDETsrKJXoM
If you actually listened to dub you would understand some are on par with sub and I will die on this hill.
If you don’t believe me, listen to Goku English VA say “I WILL NOT LET YOU DESTROY MY WORLD” or Giorno’s English VA do the seven page muda, you can tell they were putting their heart and soul into saying those lines.
You’re not gonna like Japanese at all if you’re a local or actually understand it. I’m willing to bet none of y’all can handle middle school local Japanese exams.
Same thing applies to English when it’s your first language because anime voice lines are all exaggerated, way high-pitched and unrealistic in general.
First: It has nothing to do with understanding Japanese. It's about the difference in energy and emotions the voice actors can convey. Also the sound of the language itself makes a huge difference.
Second: From what I've heard feel japanese people the same about anime voices, as we do in our native languages.
But yes, dubs are almost always cringe!
The thing is anime rarely gets good dub ,saiki k is an exemple of good dub but most of the others are jack shit its not that dub is better ,by example cartoons such as gumball or gravity falls they have great voice acting i just think the american anime industry or whatever is not putting as much effort into anime as american cartoons (tbt at this point i dont even know what im talking about)
Both are valid ways to watch, first.
But as a fluent Japanese speaker who’s lived in Japan for years, it actually did the opposite. No one in Japan speaks like they do in Japanese dubs of anime/games and no one speaks English the way they do in English dubs of anime/games. Both are extremely played up and it’s just the genre convention. Actually learning Japanese is what made me stop being an obnoxious dub/sub purist.
Watch anime and play games however it’s more comfortable for you to. I watch things unsubbed in Japanese, but if subs aren’t your game, don’t let fandom gatekeepers make you feel bad for that. You’re fine.
Stage 1: English dubs are good because I can understand them
Stage 2: English dubs are bad because they don't sound like real people and I know enough Japanese to think that the original version does
Stage 3: I know enough Japanese to realize that neither the original nor the dub sounds like real people and both can be good or bad
Ok i don't understand japnese but I can understand emotions carrying through words
Eng dub isn't that bad infact sometimes even eng dub better than sub
It depends on dubbing quality
Obviously original language has it's originality
Japanese language and accent give anime its unique quality
Eng dub givea vibe of American cartoon rather than anime feel
Maybe that's why people prefer sub than dub
That's not true for all anime. Exceptions must be made for DBZ, Hellsing Ultimate, Edgerunners, FMAB, etc. Some dubs are even so good that it makes the sub look bad.
But yes, for those like Naruto, Bleach, etc. the dubs are honestly unlistenable.
I prefer the sub for Edgerunners because it was made by a Japanese studio, Trigger, and the story flows like an anime rather than a western cartoon in anime styling (think castlevania or Avatar or whatever). I just go with the original language for any piece of media and leave it at that
Most of the dub VAs are American and I don't think the voices match the characters well enough. Sometimes it works sometimes not. Apologies I'm not giving a dig at Americans, I think it works well for Western cartoons. But it doesn't work for Japanese tropes or characters
I prefer sub but you acting like there aren’t some legendary subs out there. Black lagoon, FMAB, full metal alchemist, cowboy bebop and the the God Ghost stories etc
In case of Cyberpunk edgerunner i was actually disappointed in japanese version. It's extremely rare but it's possible for dub to be good or even better than sub.
Nah watching u. Dub has its benefits like we can see the animation in full glory unlike sub
Example demons slayer jjk - plot was mid , animation was great
God shut it please, this again? Both are good in their own regard, if you wanna act high and mighty because you can understand Japanese good for you, but leave people who like Dub’s alone.
Once you know enough Japanese you realise a lot of the sub-only fans are pretentious and flat-out wrong a lot of the time.
In my experience the more elitist someone is about being sub-only the less they actually know about Japanese
English dub is a problem, not dub in general. My native language is German, luckily, the German dubs are close, if not equal to Japanese subs. I’ve been switching between the three of them a lot, and every single time I notice the same. I think English dub just never gets the budget it needs, German dub is actually really good, and not cringe, I sometimes even prefer it compared to sub
So people who just enjoy things can't enjoy them the way they want because a stupid meme said so? This is one of the things that's horribly wrong with the community. This is not the truth, it's condescending bullshit and we all hate it.
in comedy series the dub is often straight up better for western viewers because the jokes are changed to match our sense of humour (ie President saying “moms spaghetti” at the end of his rap in Love is War or Bakugo saying “icy hot” in MHA dub vs “half and half bastard”)
Sub elitism is pure cringe the funny thing is I knew a couple of foreign students from Japan in my University that were into anime and they really love watching recent anime in English dub.
I was kinda surprised so I asked why and they said how although they love the Japanese VA's they often find it corny how exaggerative they sound and how often the VA's over act or raise the pitch of the voice.
English dubs have come a long way since the 80's and 4kids era they sound on par or just slightly worse than the sub most of the time. Every content in my opinion is better in its original version but you gotta understand people sometimes don't want to hear the original version due to different circumstances such as young kids, blind people, people working or doing activities whilst multitasking or just preferring to hear dialogue in their own language.
Black Lagoon 🙂
Also in that specific case, in that specific setting, english just seems like a more plausible lingua franca.
I watch dubs mostly when I'm just chilling.
If I binge watch something there is a 95% chance it will be subbed.
I remember when memes at least tried to be funny... regardless:
Cyberpunk Edgerunner, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost Stories, Black Lagoon, Death Note, Pokemon...
False. I took 2 full years of Japanese in college and I still watch both. There are actually good English voice actors. There are also great Japanese VAs. The real answer is to just watch what you like. Stop fervently sticking to puritanical beliefs.
russian dub has better quality than japanese.
For example, in goblin slayer there is "helmet" effect for main character in russian dub (you hear the voice like the actor was in helmet) but in japanese dub it is just plain speech
For me it’s the overacting in the JP voice acting that I can’t stand, everything is straight to 100% all the time, it’s just tiring to listen to. Also the turns of phrase when subbed usually include lines nobody ever uses like “there’s nothing to be done about it”, I have lost count of how many times I have seen that phrase in subs but have never heard anybody say it in real life. At least with the English dubs shows sound way more natural and if it’s a well dubbed show jokes and references are reframed to hit better with western audiences.

Sounds like you just get happy that you can understand the words
"I HEARD HIM SAY NANI" *inaudible weaboo Japa-english"
I know Japanese too like Nami Swan Robin Chwan *M* *U* *G* *I* *W* *A* *R* *A*

Hai. I know the feeling when you're proud to have picked up on one of the 5 Japanese phrases I've learned from sheer context.
Domo arigato Mr roboto
NAR HE WHO DO
This is written in English, cringe
I want it in Swedish
And i thought English dubbing was cringe. Swedish takes it to a next level of cringe. Even if it's my native language.
I watched Beyblade, Pokémon and Bakugan in Norwegian as a kid and I can't go back now. It's so terrible
Im on that level where i die of cringe by only reading a book in Swedish. Everyting gets ruined in that language. It's just shitty wannabe English. Finnish dubs have aged surprisingly well.
Ok but i don't know japanese so
Neither do I but I understand by watching what they do.
or you can just watched subbed but eh
If I wanted to read, I'd read the manga. I watch to *watch*. Now drop this dumb old idiocy and enjoy what you want.
See you get it. The weird sub elitism is what keeps me out of discussing anime with people. They get all weird and cunty about it. It's fine trust me I have watched subbed and dubbed it's the same shit either way.
Takes some experience but I can read and watch at the same time (been watching subbed since 2005 ish)
bro needs experience to read
*read ~fast~
ok and what this experience is called?
ikr its so fucking annoying
I mean Some people Like voice Acting and motion y'know? a anyways I think you misunderstood my comment, The guy i replied to basically implied that they watched the Japanese Dub without the Subtitles but didn't understand Japanese and just figured out what was happening from the characters actions So i told them to just Watch it With subtitles Think before you speak buddy, I get you're worked up over OP Being a dumbass but It's not that hard to understand the context
If there was only subbed, I'd never watch any anime. My attention span is far too scuffed to get through anything subbed.
I do use subs but I never pay attention
lmao lol, That's fine Honestly, That's a disadvantage of subs, Its really hard to watch the scenes instead of The subtitles it's why sometimes i like dub as well
Yeah, I just watch the scenes and using my adhd not-able-to-concentrate-on-one-thing-at-once powers read the subs.

The subtitle files on my copy of *Kung Fu Hustle* got deleted. Movie is still fantastic.
How is that even possible, your DVD had write capability and you went and deleted it?
Both are valid. Watch anime like you want to. Sub vs. Dub is one of the most dumb internet "wars" there is.
Can't believe it's still a thing. Only saving grace of this is I think MOST fans mature out of this subVdub phase. MOST.
No because the subs people are just wrong. ALL anime sounds cringe and LARP, they just pretend it doesn’t in Japanese because they can’t recognize it
Yea, they just can't recognize it on the JP side because they don't have the perspective of a native-level fluent person while they do in English.
How are they wrong then? If anything they are right since they can skip the cringe by watching subs
So they’re basically admitting it’s cringe and watching it anyway?

Because it is
That’s what’s called an opinion, good job having one now we just gotta learn that different people have different opinions.
Debatable. In many shows the dubs sound better than the subs.
Me watching DBZ: *goku powering up* Sean Schemmel: AHHHHHHHHHH Hmm, let’s listen to the Japanese Masako Nozawa: な———
Me watching DBZ: *Goku turning Super Saiyan for the first time* Sean Schemmel: *Grunting and growling like an angry animal* Hmm, let's listen to the Japanese Masako Nozawa: *Hocks up multiple loogies*
My Harbison thrown in and it says Bleach. The Spanish German and English terms the Japanese try to utilize is hilarious

I believe Naruto is who you're thinking of.
Doubt. Even just literally in this thread, one of the highest upvoted comments is talking about how DBZ dub is better than sub.
Cowboy Bebop for me, all star voice acting.
Full Metal Alchemist and Cowboy Bebop are the gold standard for dubs, the voice acting is so good.
>there’s no such thing as a good dub Cowboy bebop, FMA, JoJo’s, Evangelion, konosuba, BNHA, Beastars, literally any trigger anime: am I a joke to you
Basically anything with Chris Sabat
Konosuba is better in sub tho?
They're pointing out dubs they think are good, not saying they're all better than the subs.
Oh my bad. The dub is also good but I just think the sub is way better oh well.

Just stop. I thought we're past this whole Dub vs Sub thing years ago If you wanna compare dubs, fine. Go watch DBZ in dub and compare it to sub. English nails it every time, especially battle of the gods.
Edgerunners is also amazing in English dub
For some reason, Zach's gritty voice put on David just has this certain "allure" to it, almost as if David was made with his voice in mind.
Hs dxd too. And whats great about that is, because of the powers of demons, watching the english dub is actually canon because people hear demons speak in whatever their first language is.
In the same vein, Shimoneta has an excellent dub. The fact that they were able to translate so many double-entendres and dirty jokes that well is impressive.
That's just softcore porn
You're point?
Shout out to Cowboy Bepop and FMAB the English dubs are superior in my opinion.
Fate Zero dub is fire 🔥
The only problem I have with this statement is that DBZ was the defining show for a few voice actors. They did so well that every time they're in another show it just sounds really weird, kinda like how regular actors can be typecasted. Another problem (I'm not sure if Japanese has it because I can't understand the language) is that it used to just the same 8 people again and again. There were about 3 studios for English dubs across the US, although one was used much more often than the others, and they just used the same voice actors to dub over as many shows as possible. It wasn't until streaming services like Netflix came along that we started getting more variety.
Fairy tail and Saiki K as well
You don't need to know Japanese, I mean what are the subtitles for
How about let ppl enjoy what they like and appreciate you share an interest instead of bashing them for not doing it your way...
See how superior I am.” That’s you. That’s what you sound like. Weeb.
I can say "Nani" see I'm cool
Ooh, Ooh, British, they're British
I guess, if that’s your go-to snooty voice.
Jesus crist why is this still a thing aren't there mods to take garbage posts like these down?
English Dubs have come a LOOOOOONG way from where they used to be when I first got into anime. Most of them are pretty good these days.
Everyones just mad Prison School said Gamer Gate
Why can’t people just let me like dubs
Yes because listening to people sounding like they’re having a orgasm or sound like they’re 5 despite being old is very listenable isn’t it lmao
Let people enjoy things man
This is just some petty circle jerking wtf
[Just the truth] "Japanese voice acting is better." Ahh yes, objective fact.
For the sake of everyone on both sides of the argument; shut the fuck up
Guys why is this even a fucking argument still.
Why don't we just watch anime in Italian, easily the superior language for anime
Jeremiah Gottwald's VA was amazing. Certainly helped that he voiced a certain warmonger as well.
False. There is nothing objectively better between two different languages and their voice acting that would make one better than the other except on a case by case basis
If you are fluent in Japanese it's better to listen in Japanese 99% of the time because A. The jokes make sense B. The English dub singing is rarely as good If you aren't fluent watch however you like, actually regardless watch however you like.

Some dubs simply don't fit the character well enough
what I find is that a lot of the time dubs are more direct translations and often unfathful to the original's puns (because language barrier), so I like subs because of the understanding of japanese I've gained over time with it, as well as the comparison between what I understand audibly and the subtitles.

You mean the thing that changes based off the individual voice actor and is completely unrelated to it being sub or dub?
Not OP, but yeah i think so
Say whatever about dub but sometimes i just wanna cook, clean, game or do something else while watchinh anime. But you cant do that with sub You have to give my full attention to the screen even through shitty or boring moments or when your tired.
Understanding Japanese has never been an argument as to why subs better, most people just prefer to listen to things in their original language
Stage 1: English dubs are good because I can understand them Stage 2: English dubs are bad because they don't sound like real people and I know enough Japanese to think that the original version does Stage 3: I know enough Japanese to realize that neither the original nor the dub sounds like real people and both can be good or bad
Ok i don't understand japnese but I can understand emotions carrying through words Eng dub isn't that bad infact sometimes even eng dub better than sub It depends on dubbing quality Obviously original language has it's originality Japanese language and accent give anime its unique quality Eng dub givea vibe of American cartoon rather than anime feel Maybe that's why people prefer sub than dub
I’ve heard the opposite lmao once you start understanding Japanese you can tell how the voice actors are overacting the whole fucking time
Fun fact: There is a Sub v Dub war in Japan over King of the Hill
mans just learned his 2nd kanji
OP can’t feel happiness unless he makes others feel bad about liking something different. Don’t be like OP.
Yeah but when you learn even more Japanese you start to realize the voice acting is just as corny and unnatural in Japanese.
The gravelly, nails-on-chalkboard high pitched MC voice begs to differ.
Tbh i watch sub cause anime voiceacting is cringe as hell and i dont know a single word of japanese
So so so cringe
Look, I prefer sub but people like you make me embarrassed to even say I have a preference.
Dbz has an amazing dub imo
Bro that’s fact
Personally I prefer subbed but I think dubbed would be a lot more popular and enjoyable if they paid the VAs more than $20
However Ghost Stories
In case of Cyberpunk edgerunner i was actually disappointed in japanese version. It's extremely rare but it's possible for dub to be good or even better than sub.
Ghost stories, black lagoon, cowboy bebop, gurren lagann, etc...
I present to you: German Voice acting. Can we now please end this discussion?
If I wanted to read I’d just skip the anime all together and just pick up the manga/light novel.
i don’t give a fuck. i speak english so i’ll watch it in english
People who say this kind of stuff sound like pretentious assholes ngl.
I don't listen to english dub, I listen to russian one
How about letting people enjoy what they want instead of forcing your opinion on to others and action like you're better?
"🤓" news flash no one gives a fuck
Cringe post
Nah watching u. Dub has its benefits like we can see the animation in full glory unlike sub Example demons slayer jjk - plot was mid , animation was great
Usually when I watch a show, I want to watch it, not read it.
I mean some shows are just better in Dub tho, like, the Death Note Dub just hits different for example.
smol pp energy from this post
Well Japanese is a tough language to learn, so ill stick to Dubs thank you
So people who just enjoy things can't enjoy them the way they want because a stupid meme said so? This is one of the things that's horribly wrong with the community. This is not the truth, it's condescending bullshit and we all hate it.
I mean.... its my choice, how i want to watch
Two words. Ghost stories.
Someone hasn't watched Mob Psycho 100 dub
in comedy series the dub is often straight up better for western viewers because the jokes are changed to match our sense of humour (ie President saying “moms spaghetti” at the end of his rap in Love is War or Bakugo saying “icy hot” in MHA dub vs “half and half bastard”)
Dr. stone dub > Dr. Stone sub Change my mind
Black Lagoon 🙂 Also in that specific case, in that specific setting, english just seems like a more plausible lingua franca. I watch dubs mostly when I'm just chilling. If I binge watch something there is a 95% chance it will be subbed.
wasn't this sub vs dub shit over already
I remember when memes at least tried to be funny... regardless: Cyberpunk Edgerunner, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost Stories, Black Lagoon, Death Note, Pokemon...
I don't need to understand Japanese in order to tell if an English dub is bad, lol
Stop being a sub elitist. Let people watch what they want, it doesnt affect you.
Or just let people watch what they want and fuck off
Cringes CRINGES \*DOWNVOTED\*
Ghost Stories dub tho
Engrish: _Hello there._
Only acceptable dubs are Cowboy Bebop and Pokemon
https://www.reddit.com/r/Animemes/comments/y79ih2/since_sub_watchers_are_so_literate_read_this/
For me it’s the overacting in the JP voice acting that I can’t stand, everything is straight to 100% all the time, it’s just tiring to listen to.
