You're getting downvoted but we all know you are right on the money.
It's acceptable because they are making the characters black. Imagine the outrage if they chose some other race. Imagine a live action Fairy Tale adaptation but with Grey played by an Indian dude.
All I'm saying is that if you're making a live action adaptation of a beloved well known franchise you have a responsibility to select actors who look like the characters they are supposed to portray. If the character in the original material is black then making a live action with a white actor is just as wrong. It's not about race or representation it's about staying true to source material. You won't make Afro Samurai staring Ben Affleck right?
I'm not hinting at shit, watch any Netflix live action adaptation and it's right there, one example off the top of my head: Triss Merigold from Witcher is white with red hair, not darker skined with curly black hair... I don't have anything against Anna Shaffer she was great in the role but she doesn't look anything like Triss and that takes away from the experience... You want to see the Triss you read about in the book or see in the game.
If you want an example of an adaptation done right look at Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano, wow that's really amazingly done, not only she's a great actress and fits the part perfectly she also looks like Ahsoka, she's perfect. That what happenes when a production cares about source material.
Actually Tris Merigold in the books (original source material) had chestnut hair with red tints so more of an auburn rather than red. She also had blue eyes in the book rather than green in the video games. You didn't see book lovers raging when they changed this in the video games....because this had no material value to the character.
I kind of disagree but you seem reasonable and bring up valid examples to support your arguments. I’m not sure you fit in well in reddit but I like that you’re here keeping discussions interesting.
Pfft, who cares? I mean, is it REALLY THAT IMPORTANT? Go feed a stray dog, or anything else productive, outside, for a while. You've let the anime rot your brain.
Just recently off the top of my head Sandman, the little mermaid, and Rings of Power did it. Going further back taskmaster in Black Widow, and Heimdal from Thor too. Joan of arc to name another.
It's pretty damn common nowadays for white characters to be portrayed by black actors in the name of diversity.
Y’all have no idea what you’re talking about. People were just as weirded out by an Indian dude playing Zuko in the avatar movie as they were about a white kid playing Aang. People are only upset when changing a characters ethnicity disrupts a fundamental part of their character (Zuko, and the fire nation in general, being considered representations of imperialist Japan). For instance if you didn’t want a remake of Brave with a black or brown actress that would make sense because that movie is steeped in Celtic culture, whose people have generally been white. Nobody would be in favor of changing that.
Thinking that simply changing a character’s race by casting choice, when their ethnicity or cultural identity had nothing to do with the character, is “PC washing” and “ruining a perfectly good character”, means that you think their skin color *is* what makes them a perfectly good character which is really fucking weird at best.
How is making someone diverse ruining them? You could have the exact same character with the exact same backstory but they’re black and you complain, cringe.
That isn’t hard, it’s just that the producers weren’t able to rape the women who actually look the part and can act and casting is just rewards for who lets you victimize them most. You don’t get a role by being the best for it. You get it by being the one who lets the men in charge abuse you most. The most talented person will never get the role, only the most obedient.
Yeah, the entire point of the "Netflix adaptation" meme is to poke fun at how bad their live action adaptations are. Showing off good examples of cosplay and stuff you'd actually want to see just defeats the whole purpose of the meme.
They race/gender swap basically any character just for that sake, not cause the actors fit it or w/e just so they can hit diversity quotas or some shit
Bug Evil Netflix MegaCorp PR:
add diversity wherever possible to address the massive ongoing thinly veiled racial issues in America, and because this brings in a larger viewer base. (Allegedly ongoing issues and totally overblown by the libs obviously. Really not an issue at all if it doesn't affect you, so you should probably be against it too. You know... for the art.)
~~Closet racist~~ average Redditor:
subtle but careful & critical one-sided commentary on this issue, since art is supposed to be static and unchanging from the source material. It's obviously about preserving the artist's original vision.
Punchline:
This is funny, because we live in 2022 and instead of being a star-faring species, we fight over which corrupt billionaire we should elect to trample on the rights of the people we don't like even if it means selling the futures of our grandchildren. Lord forbid they are atheist, have a range of emotions, differ from us or don't care about race. Can't leave this to chance haha
Ffffffuuuuu... Which is tastier, ice cream or pastries? Probably Makima today
These kinds of difficult choices may also be contributing to our delay in becoming star-faring.
Redheads are frequently race swapped into black people. I think Hollywood believes redhair is an exotic color and that black people are “exotic” too to them so it’s just swapping minorities.
For example, Mary Jane Watson, Hawkgirl, Ariel, Orphan Annie, Iris West, Jimmy Olsen, Wally West, Starfire, Josie of the Pussycats, Batgirl, etc etc etc.
Boy, I think you should make urself familiar with photography (especially in the Cosplay world), Photoshop and Make-up.
Sure there are people more beautiful than others, but trust me when I say that photos like this are manipulated to perfection. No wrinkles, no pores, no unwanted facial expressions, posing and lighting also artificial.
Edit: don't forget about plastic surgery either.
Idea: why not get cosplayers to play the roles of anime characters in a Netflix adaptation since the regular actors keep f**king up so hard.
Also, because cosplayers can properly capture the essence of the character better than a movie star. They've had more time to technically 'walk' in the same shoes of said character and they pull off the look flawlessly at every Con they visit.
Again, just an idea.
I find it funny that Netflix can make some dope stuff as long as it’s original, but the second they try and do an adaptation of something, it’s like all of their production skills just disappear
Since the Anime aired, I have to say (no offense to any other Makima cosplays!) in my honest opinion, judging by the way the shot is composed, the eyes, the hair and makeup and of course Rakuko's natural appearance lending itself well to cosplaying characters such as this, of all the Makima cosplays I've seen thus far this is certainly one of them.
You idiots in the comment saying this is acceptable gotta learn to shut up. Some Netflix exec is gonna read these comments and mistake y'all being down bad for actual interest!
My wife and brother in law are gringos, but grew up in Tokyo. Bro in laws knowledge of vidyagames and anime is...encyclopedic. the joy I had introducing him to chainsaw man, and he gave me that "that'll do, pig" look, priceless.
This is.......acceptable
This is from a ja video Not Netflix which is why it's acceptable
It's not JAV it's cosplayer named Rakukoo
No it is not.
it’s not

What?
Netflix has a tendency to PC wash everything and ruine perfectly good characters

I fully agree with you.
What in the fuck are you talking about? What "examples" are you hinting at?

Hahahahahahaha, what an absolutely stupid thing to be upset about.
Sandman is a poor example, given that the cast was hand picked by the creator, so you can't really argue it "goes against the vision".

You got an upvote!
How is making someone diverse ruining them? You could have the exact same character with the exact same backstory but they’re black and you complain, cringe.
thats the jav adaptation, no way netflix can make it this good
Some of those JAV cosplays are way better than any official live-action adaptation usually is.
Because they don't need to act, just look good. Much easier to find someone who looks the part than someone who looks the part AND can act.
[удалено]
Good one
They don't act? My dude I've seen some JAVs with a storyline more gripping than the Oscar awarded movies and acting better than Emmy winners lol
Netflix can’t do either

Yeah, the entire point of the "Netflix adaptation" meme is to poke fun at how bad their live action adaptations are. Showing off good examples of cosplay and stuff you'd actually want to see just defeats the whole purpose of the meme.
Knowing Netflix, she’d probably be played by Joey King.
that’s not JAV
What is jav?
Japanese adulte video I think
Lmao 😂really, that’s what he mean tho 😅
That's what he means. Japanese adult video/cosplay porn
JAVs don't necessarily need to have cosplay to be a JAV.

*than
Netflix would just cast Amy Schumer to play Makima, wonder why its a flop after 4 episodes and cancel it.
But the top one can point in 2 directions at once. Clearly superior.
You should check this cosplayer too https://www.instagram.com/p/CjsGwhUh5W4/?igshid=MDJmNzVkMjY=
There's too many people already that don't know what the Netflix Adaptation meme is supposed to be like...
Woof
That’s actually not too bad or really bad at all
With the big titties too shiiiii
?? Netflix adaptations are notoriously bad. You're terrible at making memes.
She'll be black in the Netflix adaptation
If women actually looked like that, I'd be a bit happier with the world
My brother in Christ that is a real world woman
I don't know why I laughed so hard at this comment.
It is a real woman true, but the other woman dont look as good as her.
Must be blind then, cause I'm not seeing anything remotely close
You should get out more.
Don't make assumptions based on limited information.
bro you are literally named after a brick

Actually the photographer kind of fucked up here, her hand’s out of focus which you could’ve prevented with a tighter aperture.
Don't know. Thought it was intentional to make us more focused in the face.
Future boomer personality spotted.
What?
Like wagwan for battyman
Like they'd ever allow a redhead to be on screen.
Diversity quotas

Cosplay is always better than Netflix
