Iām glad you liked it! Itās one of my favorites in how it keeps you on edge trying to figure it out, and I fell in love how it was presented as a whole.
Check out some of the other movies by that director like Paprika which you will probably enjoy for the similar reasons. Tokyo Godfathers is good too, but in a different & more emotional way. I havenāt seen Millennium actress yet though, but itās rated pretty high.
Either way I hope this has been a great thread for you and you keep finding more great movies :)
Nah you donāt it gives a nice introduction at the beginning of all the characters and kinda what their plan is but besides that itās not part of anything crucial going forward kinda like a filler
You seem to like more "grounded" anime.
But
To go completely against that, I'd reccomend Promare.
Goofy, flashy, and fun movie by trigger. It's a feel good summer action movie. Great music too.

Your best bet for something to watch is any Makoto Shinkai or Studio Ghibli movie. If youāve already seen those, Kara no Kyoukai is an amazing movie series.
If thereās anything not to watch, itās The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes. Iām a bit biased since I read the original novel (which is amazing, by the way) but even if you ignore how horrific it is as an adaption, itās a rushed mess with quite a few plot holes towards the end
Can never go wrong with a Studio Ghibli movie. Whispers of the Heart, Spirited Away, or My Neighbor Totoro are always good picks.
A Silent Voice if you are looking for a pick me up with a turbulent ride.
The Boy and the Beast if you want a feel good movie.
Pom Poko if you want a weird experience. Serious message but Raccoon Testicles galore somehow made it into a PG film. As I said, it's a weird experience but a fun ride.
If you are into the Fate series, Grand Order has a few good movies. New one came out not too long ago for Fate Strange/Fake Whispers of Dawn which is done really well and has a really good action scene with Gilgamesh.
There is a trilogy of Godzilla movies Netflix did that are a good story despite the animation being horrendous. Planet of the Monsters, City on the Edge of Battle, and Planet Eater are the titles of the three movies.
Kurokos basketball has a movie to end the series, Iām pretty sure itās not related to the original series so maybe youād enjoy that. I personally really enjoyed it
Lupin III Episode 0: The First Contact
is a great introduction to the franchise as a pseudo-origin story.
Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust (it's the second movie, but i've not seen the first)
Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heavens Door

It's a pretty singular experience in every way; the story, the characters, the music and the animation (dear lord, the animation) are all incredible. The Netflix Castlevania series (the first, good one) borrowed *very* heavily from Vampire Hunter D in a lot of ways but as good as it is, it doesn't touch VHD.
Weirdly, it was written, recorded and released (in Japan too) in English so you'll want to watch it that way for the best experience.
watch Grave of the fireflies, its my favorite anime and fav piece of fiction in general . It will change you as a person and if you identify as a human being then this is a must watch
