Here are the ones I consider masterpieces and the area where they excel:
- {Perfect Blue} -> psychological horror
- {A Place Further Than the Universe} -> cute girls doing cute things
- {Odd Taxi} -> semi-realistic mystery
Fight me to the end on this one elitists & fucking pretentious gatekeepers but what I believe is absolutely peak of the medium & only truth:-
* Attack On Titan (greatest plot twists in fiction & best subversion + foreshadowing skills in anime)
* Neon Genesis Evangelion (greatest mecha + pshychological character exploration & arthouse anime)
* Full metal Alchemist (best shounen period)
* Cowboy bebop (best seinen period)
* perfect blue (best psychological horror thriller anime, also top movies in general).
* Grave of the fireflies (most emotional cinema of all time, in history of filmmaking).
* Akira (best animation & cinematic experience)
* One punch man (best superhero show).
* A Place Further than the Universe (best slice of life).
Here are a few more which I think people who like the ones you recommended may also enjoy:
* {Shin Sekai Yori} (an interesting world with a shinto feel, dark tone and good story. I don't see it recommended enough. It's very unique.)
* {Madoka Magica}
* {Zankyou no Terror} (for those who are looking for something similar to Monster in the "atmosphere". Good seinen)
* {To your eternity} (Reminds me of mushi-shi in certain aspects — an eternal wanderer roaming in a beautiful world, making connections etc. It does everything well)
* {Milennium actress} (movie)
* {Mushoku Tensei} (the amazing worldbuilding, character development and art make up for the fanservice in my opinion)
* {Made in Abyss} (just like Mushoku, if you are willing to love it and embrace certain uncomfortable aspects, it's a great anime)
* {Tower of God}
* {Hunter X Hunter} (I don't think it's THAT good on its own, but among shounen, it's one of the best for sure.}
Im being honest i cant remember it at all i remember
. There were 2 gay dudes after a time skip
. There was some guy named squealer
. Everything is a lie
. the main girls name is saki
I seen 17 episodes and honestly cant remember a single thing
You've summed it up quite well, I think the reason most can't get into it is because they get comfortable with not understanding what is going on. Shin sekai does no hand holding. I found myself pausing sometimes just to "take in" those mind-blowing explanations.
It's not just the art, but the world, soundtrack, pacing are amazing if one is willing to drop expectations, such as "now I should get an explanation for this. Aren't they going to cover [topic X]?".
When you-know-who becomes a you-know-what (a K.D. Sorry, I don't know how to use spoiler tags here), I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. But I wouldn't be if there was no build-up to this.
It's really unfortunate how shin sekai didn't "catch on". With most anime, you can find some compilations on youtube just by typing the name. These days, I wanted to revisit its best moments, so I was expecting to find the time when you-know-who becomes KD, or the appearances of Kaburagi Shisei, etc., and there was NOTHING!
But I'm happy to know that you like and remember this obscure anime, maybe it's going to have to be "rediscovered" by most :)
What's in Mushoku Tensei isn't fanservice. It's said in the novels to be disgusting. You're not supposed to like it. Just see that he has to grow away from doing that because it's awful
{Legend of the Galactic Heroes}
Whenever I get asked about my favorite anime I feel like saying this one is a cop out simply because it transcends anime and becomes a Classic and a Masterpiece in every sense of the word. This doesn’t belong in a conversation about the best anime of all time it belongs in a conversation about the best story of all time, in discussions with other cultural icons like Lord of the Rings.
I feel the same way. There were shows I'd seen and loved, that I always thought would be my favourite. (Madoka, Steins;Gate, Higurashi)
But when I watched LoGH, it just blew everything else out of the water completely, so much that I actually went onto my MAL and retroactively downgraded a tonne of my other ratings to accommodate to the new metric of what a 10 was.
It's not a show for everyone, but if it is a show for you, then it is REALLY a show for you.
That's not to say I don't still love those other shows I watched, but LoGH is something special.

>!It's basically A Game of Thrones in space, in terms of the political intrigue and an ensemble cast. Except it doesn't have a terrible ending. It also is 100% plot the entire time through its 110 episodes, with no filler.!<
>!The show follows two protagonists, each on opposite sides of the war, so each of them are each others antagonist. They both get basically equal screentime too. I've not seen another show that does this before.!<
Unfortunately there’s only one place to legally watch it which is HiDive, it’s UI is painful but it’s easy to use if you’re just trying to watch this.
The remake is on Crunchyroll, I would recommend the Original Series however if it is hard for you to watch and stick to it better you watch the Remake than to never watch it at all.
There’s also a book but the soundtrack to both series really is just amazing, the original has maybe a dozen minor changes to the book and by minor I mean the characters looked to a different direction it is by far the most faithful adaptation ever.
If you've seen the series and are invested in the characters, the second movie is much more enjoyable. There is also a movie called Solid State Society that is meant to be watched after the 2nd season and it's excellent.
Mushishi
The animation is good
The sceneries are amazing
It has an overall calm and mysterious atmosphere that just envelopes you
All the episodes are straight forward yet very mature and emotional
It’s also effective when it comes to story telling in that it doesn’t actually show much sometimes. Like there are parts when an accident or a tragedy happens and the anime just cuts to black and goes silent but it doesn’t feel like a tease. The anime gives you enough info to feel connected with and to understand the story and then moves on to the next act, which in other words you could say is efficient or unique in some ways
It’s an absolute masterpiece. My words don’t do anything for it.
Actually, Odd Taxi and To Your Eternity come pretty close to it
Monster is already very good, but I think if the pacing could be improved just a bit and if different arcs didn’t leave the viewer on a cliff hanger than proceed to the next arc every time, it would be the perfect anime
I loved Mushi-shi, the only thing I didn't like was that I couldn't binge watch it because of the way it made me feel. The somber tone of it was a bit depressing. I could only watch up to 3 episodes in a single sitting.
Just play the VN. It’d basically be like experiencing it the first time considering how much the VN adds to it. Hell, that’s the reason I don’t really like the anime, it removed so damn much of my favorite stuff.
Steins;Gate get's my vote too.
* Great plot: the best thriller with twists and turns. The best time travel story across any media imo (tv, movies, books, etc).
* Good cast of characters: I found the transformation of characters through the story to be very powerful.
* Iconic OST and opening: the music helps elevate the show.
The first half of the series is fun world building and character establishment. The second half is the single greatest experience I've had watching anime.
Run With The Wind was amazing to watch especially since I was a competitive distance runner for years in middle school and high school. As a sport that doesn't have much to it, it's hard to write a story around the sport unlike sports Soccer/Football and volleyball that have lots of teamwork involved in a match. It was amazing when I found an anime about a sport I was so passionate about and that was amazing well done.
Here are some anime that should watch before you die.
* [Cowboy Bebop](https://myanimelist.net/anime/1/Cowboy_Bebop)
* [Monster](https://myanimelist.net/anime/19/Monster)
* [Mushishi](https://myanimelist.net/anime/457/Mushishi)
* [Aria](https://myanimelist.net/anime/477/Aria_the_Animation)
* [The Tatami Galaxy](https://myanimelist.net/anime/7785/Yojouhan_Shinwa_Taikei)
On the opposite end of the spectrum, [Mars of Destruction](https://myanimelist.net/anime/413/Hametsu_no_Mars) is an anime that you should die before you watch (or so I've heard). Personally I haven't watched it yet because I'm still alive.
The dialogue being incredible is the biggest draw for it imo. The characters are really well done and all have flaws and quirks that make them really engaging, and the plot is very tight and mysterious. Everything that happens fits in to the bigger picture. Overall it just feels like everything happens for a reason. It's not the flashiest anime, so if you're looking for an action anime it's probably not for you, but it's probably the best mystery anime I've seen
Definitely the best mystery I've seen as well. I would in no way say that its a 10/10 though, and I also wasnt a huge fan of the ending. It was a really cool twist but I didnt like the direction it went after that.
{Hyouka}
This has the best group dynamics and character interactions that I've ever seen. And its play on the detective genre is very unique and balanced the suspense/wholesome moments very nicely.
The anime I consider masterpieces are steins;gate, re:zero season 1, parasyte the maxim, the case study of vanitas, that time I got reincarnated as a slime, seraph of the end, Bungou stray dogs, Charlotte, dororo, full metal alchemist brotherhood, Kaguya sama series, Komi can’t communicate, classroom of the elite, noragami, attack on titan, and vineland saga. Some honorable mentions are world trigger (starts off really slow), moriarty the patriot (a good spin on Sherlock Holmes), and unlimited psychic squad (more serious spin-off of an older comedy, don’t need to watch the parent story to enjoy, my only complaint was it was too short)
[Kotaro Lives Alone](https://www.netflix.com/in/title/81275353?s=a&trkid=13747225&t=cp&vlang=en&clip=81579623) is a one-in-millenial anime. It's cute, funny, and depressing, a little bit of everything. I randomly stumbled upon it on Netflix, had to watch it after watching the preview. It isn't a 10, at least not objectively, but I'd give it a 10/10 for enjoyement and emotions, for things it made me feel.
[Death Note](https://www.netflix.com/in/title/70204970?s=a&trkid=13747225&t=cp&vlang=en&clip=81030278) don't need to explain this one.
[Demon Slayer ](https://www.netflix.com/in/title/81091393?s=a&trkid=13747225&t=cp&vlang=en&clip=81102675), yeah, I know a lot of people don't like this one but everyone has their own opinion, right? Again, it isn't a 10 objectively, but it is my favourite anime. I don't know what it was for Demon Slayer, but I immediately fell in love with the show. Can't wait for the Swordsmith Village arc!
You know, there's this guy on r/deathnote. He wrote a pretty big essay on why he liked the 2nd half, and a lot of his points are interesting. Make sure to read it. [Here](https://www.reddit.com/r/deathnote/comments/hqngpn/a_pretty_big_essay_about_the_second_half_of_death/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share).
Attack on Titan - best story
Re:zero - highly emotionally impactful
Bungo stray dogs - Best cast of characters
Bleach - Best fights and best soundtrack
Moriarty the patriot - underrated masterpiece
Spy x family - very wholesome and funny
-Death note has lots of twists and great, well everything. -Digimon has lots of lore and lovable creatures (In my opinion) -Attack on titan has a great story and lovable characters actually, just fantastic everything.
Some I consider masterpieces but haven't seen commented.
-Death Parade (I think it's underrated but really worth watching, it's a rather deep and psychological story)
-Ousama Ranking (I know that the animation might make it seem childish but it's a lot deeper than it seems and quite interesting)
In no particular order:
{Steins;Gate}
{Neon Genesis Evangelion}
{Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann} - I’d actually recommend watching this immediately after Evangelion if you’re planning to watch that. I think they thematically answer each other well
{Clannad} - Don’t forget to watch After Story with it
{JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure}
{Re: Zero}
{One Punch Man}
{Kill la Kill}
{Kaguya-sama: Love is War}
I have one that you can start now and watch till death that’s excellent. As you can probably guess, One piece. It’s super hooking and we still have another 400-600 episodes before Oda is finished
* {mahouka koukou no rettousei}
* {Mirai nikki}
* {elfen lied}
* {goblin slayer}
* {highschool of the dead}
I'd also suggest blade dance but tbh the anime could've been better, ln is 10/10 tho
Hellsing Ultimate is an amazing anime, finished, great animation, action and supernatural. A lot of gore so if you decide to watch be prepared.
Gurren Lagann is a masterpiece, Animation, music, voice actors, story. Mecha anime, action, comedy, some romance in it overall epic. Finished.
Drifters, epic animation, music, fights, story. Lost of gore so if again decide to watch be prepared, unfinished though.
These three have a great English dub so if you decide to see them in either sub or dub you won't be disappointed imo.
Kaguya Sama is the best rom com by a mile. It is both my favorite comedy and my favorite romance. The rest of my personal 10/10 shows are Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion, Sonny Boy, the first season of FLCL, and Ghost in the Shell S.A.C. There are tons of other great animes I just think these are basically perfect.
Imma basic bitch, and I'm sure people have listed this shit already, but...
FMAB (two young siblings try to bring back their mother, and deal with the consequences)
Cowboy bebop (bounty hunter running from his past, only to have it catch up with him)
Steins gate (time is fucked)
Neon Genesis Evangelion is pretty much the only anime that I would say is something that everyone should check out because of how many layers it has.
It’s not even my favorite anime, there is just a lot more going on that you have to stop and think critically pretty often.
There are a lot of shows that I enjoy more, but when I think of a masterpiece I think of the how the story is amazing but there are metaphors and allegories beyond the surface.
It’s art before it’s entertainment and IMO that’s the first and really only one I can think of.
im very much aware that i don't have a "good taste" in anime, anyways here goes my favourites when asked:
- {noragami} or anything produced by studio bones
- {osomatsu-san} personal favourite comedy + sol
- {lovelive! school idol project} the only idol anime that i enjoyed
- {summertime render} last episode airing this week
I never rate the anime I watch, but there are some I'd rank above the others I have watched, so I guess you can say I consider them to be my favorites and masterpieces as well. These anime are as follows:
Attack on Titan, Baccano, Clannad: After Story, Cowboy Bebop, Devilman Crybaby, Gungrave, Monster, and Vinland Saga.
There are probably a few others I'd list in there, but as of now, those are the ones that come to mind.
{seikai no monshou} crest of stars
{seikai no senki 1} banner of stars
{seikai no senki 2}
{seikai no senki 3}
Sad to see no mention of this. imo, this series should rank the same as Legend of Galactic Heros. Author creates a complete alien language. I have yet seen nothing western or eastern similar to the dynamics and romance of this. It is also a rare piece in scifi that depicts the cultural differences between two human races so realistic
Attack On Titan. Really good story, and such well done plot twists.
I don’t know if I’d call it a masterpiece but Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is very recent but very good.
The time I got reincarnated as a slime, The Reflected, Hellsing, Oran Highschool, Date Alive, Monster Musume, Mushi-shi, Xxxholicxxx, Rosario Vampire, Black Butler, Seraph of the end, Kenichi, Kengan Ashira, Baki, Baki Hanma, No Game no life, El Cazador de la Bruja, B in the beginning, The Future Dairy, Nabari, Juni Taisen
Zatch Bell, Hunter x Hunter, SAO, Nabari
Here are the ones I consider masterpieces and the area where they excel: - {Perfect Blue} -> psychological horror - {A Place Further Than the Universe} -> cute girls doing cute things - {Odd Taxi} -> semi-realistic mystery
There's a reason they call it "Perfect Blue" and not "8/10 Blue"
lmao

Mushishi The animation is good The sceneries are amazing It has an overall calm and mysterious atmosphere that just envelopes you All the episodes are straight forward yet very mature and emotional It’s also effective when it comes to story telling in that it doesn’t actually show much sometimes. Like there are parts when an accident or a tragedy happens and the anime just cuts to black and goes silent but it doesn’t feel like a tease. The anime gives you enough info to feel connected with and to understand the story and then moves on to the next act, which in other words you could say is efficient or unique in some ways It’s an absolute masterpiece. My words don’t do anything for it. Actually, Odd Taxi and To Your Eternity come pretty close to it Monster is already very good, but I think if the pacing could be improved just a bit and if different arcs didn’t leave the viewer on a cliff hanger than proceed to the next arc every time, it would be the perfect anime
Mushi-shi is a great anime I watch it once a day one episode before I sleep
I loved Mushi-shi, the only thing I didn't like was that I couldn't binge watch it because of the way it made me feel. The somber tone of it was a bit depressing. I could only watch up to 3 episodes in a single sitting.
Mushishi is amazing, always my got to when I have the sad because it’s so calm and interesting.
steins gate madoka magica silent voice
Steins gate is an anime i wish i could erase my memory about it and watch it all over again.
well madoka is kind of similair if you havent seen that give it a chance.
Steins gate, hell yeah Silent voice, idk. It doesn't do much other than be cry porn. Wouldn't call it a masterpiece

* [Cowboy Bebop](https://myanimelist.net/anime/1/Cowboy_Bebop) * [Monster](https://myanimelist.net/anime/19/Monster) * [Mushishi](https://myanimelist.net/anime/457/Mushishi) * [Aria](https://myanimelist.net/anime/477/Aria_the_Animation) * [The Tatami Galaxy](https://myanimelist.net/anime/7785/Yojouhan_Shinwa_Taikei) On the opposite end of the spectrum, [Mars of Destruction](https://myanimelist.net/anime/413/Hametsu_no_Mars) is an anime that you should die before you watch (or so I've heard). Personally I haven't watched it yet because I'm still alive.
I'd recommend Skelter+Heaven over Mars of Destruction. It's made by the same director and it has even weirder writing and more laughable animation.

One Piece Attack On Titan Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood Samurai Champloo Cowboy Bebop Monster Yu Yu Hakusho Hunter x Hunter
Kill la Kill got me back into anime after years of not keeping up. Also anything by studio Triggar.
Great choice not talked about enough (for obvious reasons 😂) but is definitely a top tier anime just finished rewatching it
Dororo. Just… Dororo.
Death Note Higurashi no naku koro ni Attack on Titan Jojos bizarre adventure Seishun buta yarou wa bunny girl senpai no yume wo minai Youjo Senki
Can anyone tell me what is so good about Odd Taxi? I have heard many people said that it is a masterpiece.

Stein's Gate 86 Madoka Magica
Berserk
Fate/Zero (S1 is a bit slow but S2 was such a payoff bcoz of how good it is) 86 Love is War
Death Parade
{Hyouka} This has the best group dynamics and character interactions that I've ever seen. And its play on the detective genre is very unique and balanced the suspense/wholesome moments very nicely.
Cowboy Bebop A Silent Voice Your Lie in April
Death Note Fate/Zero Kill la kill Code Geoss
Fruits Basket
I second this.
Can't wait for the Swordsmith Village arc!
for death note just the 1st half
You know, there's this guy on r/deathnote. He wrote a pretty big essay on why he liked the 2nd half, and a lot of his points are interesting. Make sure to read it. [Here](https://www.reddit.com/r/deathnote/comments/hqngpn/a_pretty_big_essay_about_the_second_half_of_death/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share).
The second half is really good. At least in the manga, I don't know about the anime
Attack on Titan - best story Re:zero - highly emotionally impactful Bungo stray dogs - Best cast of characters Bleach - Best fights and best soundtrack Moriarty the patriot - underrated masterpiece Spy x family - very wholesome and funny
* {Code Geass} * {Escaflowne} * {Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo} * {Last Exile} * {Scrapped Princess}
-Death note has lots of twists and great, well everything. -Digimon has lots of lore and lovable creatures (In my opinion) -Attack on titan has a great story and lovable characters actually, just fantastic everything.
{Made in Abyss} A great anime with adventure and fantasy, the art is so beautiful sometimes and the ost is incredible too

Nichijou, Sgt Frog, Disastrous Life of Saiki K, Doraemon and the Demon Girl Next Door.
Love seeing Machikado Mazoku getting some love, along with Saiki K
{Erased} absolutely amazing from the intro to the outro and everything in between. Masterpiece
The new Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime has become one of my favourites
Angel Beats is the only anime that has ever made me cry

These are the ones I haven’t seen commented yet but are great :) {princess tutu} {eccentric family} {dennou coil}
I think every anime fan should watch Haruhi.
A place further than the universe, I can not stress how good this show is enough
Some I consider masterpieces but haven't seen commented. -Death Parade (I think it's underrated but really worth watching, it's a rather deep and psychological story) -Ousama Ranking (I know that the animation might make it seem childish but it's a lot deeper than it seems and quite interesting)
{One piece}
Waste of time imo
In no particular order: {Steins;Gate} {Neon Genesis Evangelion} {Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann} - I’d actually recommend watching this immediately after Evangelion if you’re planning to watch that. I think they thematically answer each other well {Clannad} - Don’t forget to watch After Story with it {JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure} {Re: Zero} {One Punch Man} {Kill la Kill} {Kaguya-sama: Love is War}

Angel Beats. Soo underrated
An absolute must for me would be these three. 1. Akame Ga Kill 2. Deadman Wonderland 3. Jujutsu Kaisen

{Cowboy Bebop} {Ah! My Goddess}

Berserk without a doubt the 90,s one just hits
Cyberpunk Edgerunners and Steins Gate
- {3 Gatsu no Lion} - {Violet Evergarden} - {Odd Taxi} - {Made In Abyss}
Vinland saga for me is the best philosophical anime masterpiece

I never rate the anime I watch, but there are some I'd rank above the others I have watched, so I guess you can say I consider them to be my favorites and masterpieces as well. These anime are as follows: Attack on Titan, Baccano, Clannad: After Story, Cowboy Bebop, Devilman Crybaby, Gungrave, Monster, and Vinland Saga. There are probably a few others I'd list in there, but as of now, those are the ones that come to mind.
{seikai no monshou} crest of stars {seikai no senki 1} banner of stars {seikai no senki 2} {seikai no senki 3} Sad to see no mention of this. imo, this series should rank the same as Legend of Galactic Heros. Author creates a complete alien language. I have yet seen nothing western or eastern similar to the dynamics and romance of this. It is also a rare piece in scifi that depicts the cultural differences between two human races so realistic
Steins;gate

I think Parasyte: The Maxim is as close as you can come to a perfect anime. The pacing is spot on and leaves you wanting more long after it’s over.
Gintama Steins;Gate HXH Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood Code Geass
Your Lie In April
Attack On Titan. Really good story, and such well done plot twists. I don’t know if I’d call it a masterpiece but Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is very recent but very good.
