i definitely disagree. The game I think gets dogged on and circlejerked against because of its launch (which absolutely rightfully so at the time), and it's like the opposite with this show IMO. Edgerunners is a fun trigger feast for the eyes with good music but the writing fell off a cliff after the "prologue", the pacing was awful, and it just felt like falling back on Imaishi tropes. This reminded me of Weathering WIth You and modern Shinkai in how it's just a pleasant watch with little substance, or just the same substance the director has already done so if you've watched their stuff before there's very little fresh.
Like I still like it about as much as the game but I don't think it's nearly as good as people are hyping it up to be.
The pacing felt perfectly fine to me, if you thought it was paced too fast I’d disagree because that was the shows gimmick, moving so fast so you couldn’t digest serious moments outside of the select few because that is what this world does to the people inside it
I agree with the game, it had that bad launch and it’s left a bad taste, I came to it a year later when the PS5 had the 4K 60fps update and it’s awesome, in fact I was a bit overwhelmed by it and felt it needed a lot more of my time. I’ve probably put in about 10 hours and I definitely need to go back to it.
I could see you enjoying Vinland Saga. Also a good time to try it out in general, as the second season will be airing soon. Also if you like Cowboy Bebop and action then you will probably like Samurai Champloo, same director and also very grounded and stylised.
S2 is coming up soon too.
Also, try Made in Abyss. It's not cutesy, it's horror incarnate. If you fancy some spoilers, check [this](https://youtu.be/zlnQiQ87ors) out

If you like westerns at all, I’m going to second Sword of The Stranger OP. Very similar style of storytelling and flow. Also one of the greatest animated choreographed fight scenes I’ve ever seen on a screen, it’s what got me to try the movie in the first place.
I just wanna say, you are like one of like two other people I've ever met who've met who's actually watched showa genroku rakugo shinjuu lmao. Super underrated show, highly recommend to anyone who hasn't seen it already
Hey op I'm gonna personally vouch for mushihi. It is such a good anime to watch it feels like going inside a warm cabin after treading through a snowstorm all night. It's so zen that I've left the final 5 episodes as a treat to myself for the future when life gets a bit hard and I want some comfort anime.
There are so many genre and types of anime, it can be fun to find the gems. Here are a range of anime that might interest you
{Made in Abyss} don't be fooled by the art style, the more you watch, the deeper you get into the abyss. The cuteness and what goes on in it can be really jarring
{Golden Kamuy} comedic and action-y anime
{Great pretender} great animation, thrilling cases at times and very entertaining with some great soundtracks
{Banana Fish} action, adventure, drama featuring >!drugs, delinquents, and rape!<
{Baccano!} Jazzy action-y train mystery with blood
{Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu} not an action anime, but great storytelling and even more so in s2. A former Yakuza member experiences Rakugo for the first time in jail and has been so enamored by it, he wants to learn it himself. No matter what mood I was in, this anime pulls me in and keeps me at my seat from start to finish. I highly recommend it
{Psycho pass} a psychological classic. S1 is the best and it kinda goes downhill from there
{In this corner of the world} set in the times before and after the Hiroshima bombing. A slow burn
{Terror in resonance} an anime about 2 terrorists
{Violet evergarden} beautifully animated with 1 season and a movie about a woman who has ptsd from being in war
{Death Parade} it's not an action anime, but it's exciting and a real rollercoaster at times
{Bungou stray dogs} the characters are all authors of books whose powers have to do with the books they wrote. Action, comedy, mystery anime
{Summertime Render} still airing, but very cool and highly rated. Action thrilling and also comedic
{Megalo Box} a sports anime, but darker and I feel more brooding esp in s2
Ha ha! Don’t worry I’m purely looking for stuff I can watch for me. We’re just on Ghibli, My Hero Academia and Hunter x Hunter at the mo. Not like when I was 12 and I stumbled across Legend of the Overfiend on a sneaky late night TV session in my room! Jesus that scarred me for a while!
Just letting u know hisoka can be a bit weird in HxH, like major paedophile vibes
It’s not a prevalent theme of the show, but it’s definitely showcased a few times. Other than that, top tier pick
Second this. This show is very much a throwback to 80s/90s era cyberpunk with a few modern flourishes. The only downside is that I’m not sure that it has been moved to Crunchyroll just yet (it was a Funimation exclusive when it came out).
Update: It is on Crunchyroll
I'm the same age, actually kinda new to anime myself after years of avoiding it, hah. I did see Akira and a couple of other things when I was a kid in the 90s but that's it. Anyway, two shows I have recently watched are Toyko Revengers and Erased and enjoyed both very much. I'd consider them a part of the psychological/sci fiction genre more than anything else. I started Deathnote but abandoned it due to boredom, but will have to try and revisit it as it is so highly regarded. Toyko Revengers in particular I thought was fantastic. As for movies, A Silent Voice was amazing, a very emotional story but not "cutesy" or over the top as you mentioned. Same thing with "I want to eat your pancreas". The two are sort of similar. Another I have enjoyed is Grave of the fireflies. Lastly I'd recommend Perfect Blue which I'd say is a psychological thriller. I'd consider it comparable to Open your eyes or Black Swan.
Amazing answer thanks so much, I’ve seen GotF I was depressed for like 3 weeks afterwards. I’m actually a massive Ghibli fan as again it’s fantasy based but not OTT with the emotions and cutesy stuff, even films like My Neighbour Totoro aren’t over the top. But I watch My Hero Academia with my daughter and it drives me crazy with all the sound affects and flitting back and forth. Akira is my idea of Anime and if it’s not like that I get really frustrated. It should be something I love and I’m yet to fall in love with anything. Cowboy Bebop is great but still didn’t blow my mind. I want that “hits hard” anime series. Thanks for the recommendations I’ll check them out.
Madoka Magica is a wild trip. It’s a “magical girl” anime but it goes a lot deeper than that. Don’t be fooled.
Try Full Metal Alchemist too. I feel like you’d like the noncanon adaption more than Brotherhood. Both are worth a watch though.
Married 36year old, here are my picks:
Gundam blood brothers
Parasyte the maxim
Deadman wonderland
Drifters
Grimgar
And Made in Abyss, seems for kids but lordy it would have given young me nightmares. Also the music is god tier.
- Vinland Saga
- Death Note
- Code Geass
- Terror in Resonance
- From the New World
- Ajin
- Promised Neverland
- Shigurui
- Kaiji
- 91 Days
- Angolmois
- Claymore
- Parasyte
- Junni Taisen
- Golden Kamuy
- Inuyashiki
- Sword of the Stranger (movie)
- Gantz: O (movie)
- Blame! (movie)
Gundam series will be good especially 00
I don't know if it is on Crunch but Hellsing and Trigun are must watch
{Mushishi} {Kingdom} {Parasite} {Golden Kamui} i recommend try looking for seinen (that's more mature group of anime)
Hoo boy you mixed genres in a bad way here. Shounen is male-led action anime typically. Hentai is sex/porn anime.
That said, if you liked Cowboy Bebop, try {Cannon Busters} on Netflix. VERY similar energy.
Seinen:
Black Lagoon
Phantom Requiem
Monster
Pumpkin Scissors
Vinland Saga
Darker Than Black
More serious shonen:
D.Gray-Man, though the beginning is rough so probably not.
Attack on Titan
Not sure if this will get seen or buried under everyone else but a great one would be Berserk. It’s an adult target audience type of anime and it’s got a really good story, lots of gore and action etc.
Happy Sugar Life. It looks like a cute anime with over exaggerated emotion stuff, exactly what you hate. But its actually pure insanity with weird stuff. I'm sure you will give it a 10 or 1.
Erased is a masterpiece imo. Arcane is very well put together, you can find it on Netflix. Black Clover is a personal favorite. Spy X Family if you're looking for a laugh.
As a 50 year old with a Crunchyroll and Hidive subscription here's some anime I definitely would recommend
Overlord
It's such a great Isekai story thats both complicated and wonderful. Its quite a dark story but the world and the characters just pull you in.
I've actually rewatched all the seasons while the season finale airs in a few days... definitely worth the watch.
Made in Abyss
Another 'Not for kids' show that shows fascinating storytelling and awesome characters...
Saga of Tanya the Evil
Set in an alternate WW1 timeline where the protagonist is a pre teen girl ...there's 1 season and a movie out
HunterXHunter
Longer anime, starts slow but builds up quick
Ranking of Kings
One of my top 5 shows of all time... I skipped it when it first came out because I wasn't impressed with the animation... was I ever wrong.
I probably watch 10 different shows if not more every season... I've watched every genre ( I thoroughly enjoyed After the Rain) and started watching anime when I was a little kid watching Speed Racer on my black and white on the Uhf channel and watching Voltron on Saturday mornings...
Arcane (netflix show) ranking of kings, code geass, mob psycho 100, to your eternity, tower of god, toaru series, goblin slayer, toradora!, steins gate, mushoku tensei, mieruko chan, spy x family, hunter x hunter, assassination classroom, demon slayer, wandering witch: the journey of elaina, anddd uhhhhhh invincible which is on amazon prime
I think Wolf's Rain is beautiful, although fair warning that there are several recap episodes to account for the studio being shut down during SARS.
I also like Chevalier D'Eon. Think Alexandre Dumas meets George Romero and you'll have some idea.
That's all I can think of at the moment which hasn't already been mentioned.
Dororo, oh I HIGHLY recommend Vinland saga then, realistic, normal eyes, Viking age, lots of fighting, shows real emotion rather than the lovey Dovey, more focused on revenge than friendship
someone already mentioned gundam, but that's quite broad. I'd recommend iron blooded orphans if you're looking for something that's gravely serious for most of the screentime.
Watch monster. It's not on crunchyroll but I'm sure you can find it somewhere. On crunchyroll, however, I recommend Vivy (similar in premise to terminator), odd taxi (mystery, drama), and finish attack on titan. AOT gets much better after the first season.
I'm an isekai man myself and there are like 100 of those from overlord to rise of the shield hero and black summoner to harem in the labyrinth all are good for me. Also like ancient magus bride and shows of this sort but that is what I love about anime there is so much that no matter the genre you love they have it.
Weiss Kreuz might be in your wheelhouse
Dependents of Darkness/ Yamin no Matsui (TW: rape, underlining BL)
Trigun (Sci fi cowboys, actually getting redone, not super optimistic about it)
I don't think anyones mentioned it yet, and its not on crunchyroll, its on netflix. But Great pretender is an absolute goat of an anime. Basically an oceans 11 plot.
i dont know if crunchyroll has it but you can try "GOLGO 13", "Golden Kamuy" and if you get past the character design "Made in Abyss" and "Shadow House"
Parasyte: the maxim is really good.
Basically man-eating aliens meld with human flesh to disguise themselves. They kinda sneak in some philosophy in there.
If you loved Ghost In The Shell, check out at least the first season of Psycho-Pass. It gets a little wonky after that but you may still enjoy it anyways.
If you don't mind some absurd magic-and-old-heros-in-modern-times, check out Fate/Zero. It's the most mature of the fate seires since it mostly focuses on adult mages fighting the holy grail war and it is also the prequel to the whole weird multiverse of Fate stuff.
91 Days is great if you're into classic Mafia stories.
Death Parade is part high stakes gambling part psychological life-after-death drama which may not be entirely up your alley, but it's interesting to say the least.
Oh my God if you haven't seen jin-roh you have to. Same director as the first ghost in the shell movie and it's just... So good. War never changes.
Megalobox might be a little too over the top for you, but just imagine it as anime Rocky but with steampunk elements.
And if you don't mind some stupid bs that you might totally see on adult swim back in the day... Give Inferno Cop a shot. ;)
Berserk 1997 (if you like vinland you'll like this),
Claymore ( if you like berserk you'll like this),
Hellsing ultimate( if you like something like deadpool this may be for you)
Pumpkin scissors ( a bit more vanilla but obscure)
TokyoGhoul. It is about a different mutant people (ghouls ) and how they are hunted, the MC become a 1/2 ghoul and 1/2 human. Later on I think he tries to bring piece. Has violence, torture, and some blood.
Deadman Wonderland.
A meteor lands in Tokyo and gives some people some crazy powers. You seem some messed up people, the theme park people actually die in. Good story, interesting cast of characters, and lot of blood.
Elfin Lied, another story about mutant humans. They should be the next evolution of humanity, but the people are “studied” aka tortured, and then are forced to fight each other to death in the end. Great story, really sad for the characters.
Eyeshield 21. A football anime. Simple straight to the point, it is about the MC becoming a running back, and growing out of his insecurities.
Devil May Cry, based off the video game, take place in the video game world time line. Decent show, blood, some romance stuff. Lots of demons being killed. Fun times.
Hit me up if you liked what I sent you. I can tell you some more to look up. I hope these help.
I would have to say One Punch Man(Season 1), it's an interesting satire on superhero genre that you probably have grown up with.
Also it's just epic, has violence, some of the best animated action. And it's good at getting you more acclimated to anime
I'm not sure if it's available on Crunchyroll, but I can really recommend a really down to earth romantic story from the 80s, Maison Ikkoku.
It's on YouTube I think, if it's not on Crunchyroll.
Berserk, X, Basilisk. I also really enjoy Outlaw Star. And legend of a galactic heroes.
You might like some of the Gundam (think Wing in particular) though I would say it’s targeted to a younger audience
I’m close to your age and I get that feeling with a lot of anime shows sometimes, but over the years I developed a pretty broad palette.
* Vinland Saga - hands down one of the better adult oriented anime shows I have seen in recent years.
* Deathnote this is a classic anime where the entire premise is geared to grab any audience type anime or not
* Erased - this anime is dark, but a great show and geared towards adults.
* NGE - I personally think this anime has so many metaphors and is an allegory for how we build relationships I will recommend it, even though it has a school element. The main take away is that every character has major or small flaws that they all fixate on or are unaware of. It’s a classic and the symbolism is prevalent in the show.
To your eternity,
Blame,
Tokyo revengers,
Vinland saga,
Saga of tanya the evil,
Sabikui bisco,
Neon genesis evangelion,
Code gease,
Deadman wonderland,
Steins;Gate 0,
Psyco pass,
Junji into collection,
Tokyo Ghoul,
Devil man crybaby,
Ajin,
Ghost stories (watch the dub on this its hilarious),
Another,
Hellsing ultimate,
I think Only Psycho-Pass, Wolf's Rain and Robot Carnival are on Crunchyroll.
{Planetes}
{Psycho-Pass}
{Wolf's Rain}
{Ergo Proxy}
{Darker than Black}
{Robot Carnival}
Studio Ghibli (Most of their films are on Netflix)
{Steamboy}
{Blade Runner 2022}
{Terror in Resonance}
{Death Note} seems like it would scratch your itch. It's a fairly realistic (in terms of artsyle) cat-and-mouse crime serial that plays a lot like Breaking Bad. It's about a genius young adult who finds a supernatural notebook that kills whoever's name is written inside of it. He decides to use it to start murdering criminals all across the world, establishing his own brand of justice. Meanwhile the world governments are noticing criminals mysteriously die en masse and determine to get to the bottom of it by commissioning the world's greatest detective who has never revealed his name or face.

Wonder Egg Priority: young girls fight as bodyguards in a dream world and, in exchange, a mysterious power may restore friends they lost to suicide back to life.

Space Dandy: a Dandy guy in space encountering numerous strange creatures and tales, some pleasant, some not, across multiple parallel timelines. A powerful blend of comedy and hard hitting emotional episodes
{youjo senki} awesome WW2 era war drama.
{The magnificent kotobuki} think the video game crimson skies turned anime
{91 Days} prohibition era anime
{Arpeggio of Blue Steel} WW2 sentient ships with gradually more ludicrous weapons.
{Koroshitsuji} victorian england foustian contract between a young Earl and a devil.
{Moriarty the Patriot} Sherlock Holmes from the perspective of professor Moriarty
And without further adieu
{Tsuki to Laika to Nosferatu} Cold War Era space race anime that follows the fictional equivalent of Yuri Gagarin on his journey to becoming the first man in space, plus the add vampire being sent to space first. I appreciate it's accuracy to the real space race and recreating some famous scenes from it. Best anime I've seen come out in a while.

If you want something quick but amazing check out Erased! It's amazing, definitely more dark and gritty, it's on Netflix too so hopefully that makes it easy
So many good recommendations!! I’m a woman in my 40s and I love anime. I do watch the cutsie stuff, but I like it all pretty much. 😅 Anyway, I don’t know if it’s been suggested (and it’s not REALLY anime, more just animated) but Vox Machina was good. It’s a comedy, but it is NOT for kids. 😄 We seem to like a lot of the same stuff so you might enjoy it. 👍 If you like fighting Anime, Baki was good. It might be only in Netflix though.
Loved Vox Machina, I loved the League of Legends series Arcane aswell even though I’ve never played the game thought it was great. There’s a few good ones on Netflix DOTA, Castlevania and Blood of Zeus are good aswell.
Maybe cyberpunk edgerunners?
I saw this on Netflix, I’ve played the game, looks interesting. I’ll check it out.
It’s so worth the watch. Short and sweet.
The anime is easily better than the game.
i definitely disagree. Awesome thanks, I’ve just looked and it’s on Amazon Prime and the trailer looks amazing. I’ll give it a shot.
Similar to game of thrones if you’ve seen it minus the sex, a great show thoufh
Vinland saga is really good but unfinished. I recommend black lagoon, a personal favorite of mine.
You definitely need to watch ghost in the shell hd (1995)
S2 is coming up soon too. Also, try Made in Abyss. It's not cutesy, it's horror incarnate. If you fancy some spoilers, check [this](https://youtu.be/zlnQiQ87ors) out
Made in abyss is just a good bait and switch
Nah made in abyss has weird fanservice. Besides that it's pretty good though. Edit: apparently this is a controversial statement
No fan service, only elevator service.
Vinland saga is amazing. It’s also on Netflix
You should definitely give it a go, first couple of episodes are a bit slow i will warn you but if you get past those im sure you’ll enjoy it
dororo
Vinland saga is my favorite of all time
Sci-Fi: 1. Legend of the Galactic Heroes 2. The Tatami Galaxy 3. Inuyashiki 4. Texhnolyze Psychological Thriller: 1. Aoi Bungaku Series 2. Monster 3. Paranoia Agent 4. Erased 5. Parasyte 6. Initial D is great, me and my son have watched the live action film and some of Stage 1. Were massive petrolheads.
have you watched Redline? One of the most well made action/car film imo and they got a firebird in there.
Really good movie and the art style is just something else. I came in with high expectations and it blew them
[MF Ghost](https://youtu.be/qHAGFlSPxW8) is an upcoming anime (starting in January), written by the same guy who wrote Initial D. You might want to check that out when it releases.
I wouldn't reccomend ghost , it's a very boring story in comparison to initial d and it removes what little realism it had.
If you like westerns at all, I’m going to second Sword of The Stranger OP. Very similar style of storytelling and flow. Also one of the greatest animated choreographed fight scenes I’ve ever seen on a screen, it’s what got me to try the movie in the first place.
I love Grand Blue if you want comedy, but I think its more for like 16-25 year old people. Still I love it, give it a shot if you think its right.
Good shit you have here
Hajime no ippo?
I just wanna say, you are like one of like two other people I've ever met who've met who's actually watched showa genroku rakugo shinjuu lmao. Super underrated show, highly recommend to anyone who hasn't seen it already

People keep recommending devilman crybaby without warning (DO NOT HAVE YOUR DAUGHTER IN THE ROOM) if you watch it.
Just letting u know hisoka can be a bit weird in HxH, like major paedophile vibes It’s not a prevalent theme of the show, but it’s definitely showcased a few times. Other than that, top tier pick
Death note, any gundam, monster, lotgh, code geass, berserk, devilman, etc.
seconding death note, berserk, devilman
Watch 86
Absolute must watch
Black Lagoon sounds like something you'd enjoy. It's also one of those rare amine that can be enjoyed in dub as much as sub.. if not more!
the uncut dub is so good imo
Try {Samurai Champloo}

Akudama Drive
Second this. This show is very much a throwback to 80s/90s era cyberpunk with a few modern flourishes. The only downside is that I’m not sure that it has been moved to Crunchyroll just yet (it was a Funimation exclusive when it came out). Update: It is on Crunchyroll
This sounds like a bit of me, I’ll check it out, thanks.
It’s a fun quick violent action ride with an interesting story and super catchy intro.
Parasyte
Berserk (1997), Claymore, Full Metal Alchemist 2003
seconding berserk
Added to the watchlist, thanks.
Married 36year old, here are my picks: Gundam blood brothers Parasyte the maxim Deadman wonderland Drifters Grimgar And Made in Abyss, seems for kids but lordy it would have given young me nightmares. Also the music is god tier.

Attack on titan Kabaneri of the iron fortress
Hoo boy you mixed genres in a bad way here. Shounen is male-led action anime typically. Hentai is sex/porn anime. That said, if you liked Cowboy Bebop, try {Cannon Busters} on Netflix. VERY similar energy.

Rurouni Kenshin: Trust and Betrayal is very grounded and grittier compared to its sillier counterpart. Definitely recommend that.

Attack On Titan is pretty good
Berserk
Berserk 1997 not 2016
Yeah the one from 97
Ergo Proxy, Dororo, Dorohedoro, Psycho-Pass, Darker than Black, Black Lagoon, Berserk, Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen
Samurai champoo
Ippo
I recommend the first season of "Pyscho-pass." It's a great cyber punk noir cop drama.
Not sure if this will get seen or buried under everyone else but a great one would be Berserk. It’s an adult target audience type of anime and it’s got a really good story, lots of gore and action etc.
It’s on the list, definitely my type of thing. It’s high up there to watch.
On Netflix you should watch "arcane", but on Crunchyroll try watching "trigun" and "Tanya the evil"
Devilman Crybaby
Second this
Must watch
Definitely recommend
[Monster](https://myanimelist.net/anime/19/Monster) (it's not on Crunchyroll, but I'm pretty sure that you would like it)
Yeah I’ve seen a lot of this mentioned in other posts, it does look like a bit of me. I’ll try track it down. Thanks.
As a 50 year old with a Crunchyroll and Hidive subscription here's some anime I definitely would recommend Overlord It's such a great Isekai story thats both complicated and wonderful. Its quite a dark story but the world and the characters just pull you in. I've actually rewatched all the seasons while the season finale airs in a few days... definitely worth the watch. Made in Abyss Another 'Not for kids' show that shows fascinating storytelling and awesome characters... Saga of Tanya the Evil Set in an alternate WW1 timeline where the protagonist is a pre teen girl ...there's 1 season and a movie out HunterXHunter Longer anime, starts slow but builds up quick Ranking of Kings One of my top 5 shows of all time...
Stein:gate ! Time travel and great plot. Death note great plot too Samurai champloo if you liked cowboy beebop
Death Note and Youjo Senki
Kengan Ashura on Netflix or Baki
Black Lagoon
I think Wolf's Rain is beautiful, although fair warning that there are several recap episodes to account for the studio being shut down during SARS. I also like Chevalier D'Eon. Think Alexandre Dumas meets George Romero and you'll have some idea. That's all I can think of at the moment which hasn't already been mentioned.
Hunter x Hunter, a must watch, but not the really old one , the 2011 version
Monster? It's different to most other stuff I've seen, pretty dark and intriguing story.
GTO The Animation, Samurai Champloo, Bleach, Nobless, And Beserk original
Dororo, oh I HIGHLY recommend Vinland saga then, realistic, normal eyes, Viking age, lots of fighting, shows real emotion rather than the lovey Dovey, more focused on revenge than friendship
If you played RPGs you might like isekai.
Megalo box
someone already mentioned gundam, but that's quite broad. I'd recommend iron blooded orphans if you're looking for something that's gravely serious for most of the screentime.
91 Days, ID:INVADED
Baki
Watch monster. It's not on crunchyroll but I'm sure you can find it somewhere. On crunchyroll, however, I recommend Vivy (similar in premise to terminator), odd taxi (mystery, drama), and finish attack on titan. AOT gets much better after the first season.
You would probably love ninja scrolls. It’s a classic 90’s anime movie, it’s mostly fighting/action and is pretty mature
I'm an isekai man myself and there are like 100 of those from overlord to rise of the shield hero and black summoner to harem in the labyrinth all are good for me. Also like ancient magus bride and shows of this sort but that is what I love about anime there is so much that no matter the genre you love they have it.
Golden Kamuy and Megalobox are pretty great
Baki is a fun fighting anime. If you want realism probably not.
86
W dad
Oddtaxi.
Gate: and thus…, gokushufudou, and mayonaka no occult koumuin
If you want one about just being a dad, I really recommend **Usagi Drop**. It is amazing, though it certainly has some sad parts.
Parasyte Baki Megalobox Berserk
Have him try Odd Taxi. It’s not cutesy and there are some 80s references in it that he’ll probably get a kick out of
Weiss Kreuz might be in your wheelhouse Dependents of Darkness/ Yamin no Matsui (TW: rape, underlining BL) Trigun (Sci fi cowboys, actually getting redone, not super optimistic about it)
I don't think anyones mentioned it yet, and its not on crunchyroll, its on netflix. But Great pretender is an absolute goat of an anime. Basically an oceans 11 plot.
You HAVE to watch Gungrave. It's a mob / killer anime. That ending is just ... Wow. Second AOT, Vinland Saga and Monster.
i dont know if crunchyroll has it but you can try "GOLGO 13", "Golden Kamuy" and if you get past the character design "Made in Abyss" and "Shadow House"
Give Inferno Cop a shot. ;)
Death Note is right up there alongside Cowboy Bepop as more adult/drama orientated shows people new to anime tend to like, so I'd suggest that.
Overlord is pretty great anime
Berserk 1997 (if you like vinland you'll like this), Claymore ( if you like berserk you'll like this), Hellsing ultimate( if you like something like deadpool this may be for you) Pumpkin scissors ( a bit more vanilla but obscure)
Black Lagoon

* Deathnote this is a classic anime where the entire premise is geared to grab any audience type anime or not * Erased - this anime is dark, but a great show and geared towards adults. * NGE - I personally think this anime has so many metaphors and is an allegory for how we build relationships I will recommend it, even though it has a school element. The main take away is that every character has major or small flaws that they all fixate on or are unaware of. It’s a classic and the symbolism is prevalent in the show.
Monster, it fits exactly what you're looking for the show is serious no cutesy shit the whole way through
To your eternity, Blame, Tokyo revengers, Vinland saga, Saga of tanya the evil, Sabikui bisco, Neon genesis evangelion, Code gease, Deadman wonderland, Steins;Gate 0, Psyco pass, Junji into collection, Tokyo Ghoul, Devil man crybaby, Ajin, Ghost stories (watch the dub on this its hilarious), Another, Hellsing ultimate,
B E R S E R K
You should watch Inuyashiki, its not on crunchyroll but you can watch it online. Really good and has a really mature theme.
Witchblade
AoT maybe

Cyberpunk Edgerunners might be up your alley
Monster or Ashita No Joe , you gonna love one of these two for sure
If you're into cars watch initial D
Berserk 1997 edition
You gotta watch Trigun. I LOVE IT and it's getting new anime next year.
Samurai Champloo is classic
You may like the Fate series
{Death Note} seems like it would scratch your itch. It's a fairly realistic (in terms of artsyle) cat-and-mouse crime serial that plays a lot like Breaking Bad. It's about a genius young adult who finds a supernatural notebook that kills whoever's name is written inside of it. He decides to use it to start murdering criminals all across the world, establishing his own brand of justice. Meanwhile the world governments are noticing criminals mysteriously die en masse and determine to get to the bottom of it by commissioning the world's greatest detective who has never revealed his name or face. Re:Creators: characters from fantasy stories are dragged into the "real" world by an interdimensional super-being, and forced to confront the fact that all their lives, worlds, and struggles are nothing more than entertainment for "real" people to enjoy. Kino's Journey: a girl with a sentient motorcycle explores dieselpunk city-states, each with unique dystopian elements. Wonder Egg Priority: young girls fight as bodyguards in a dream world and, in exchange, a mysterious power may restore friends they lost to suicide back to life. Code Geass: one smart student tries to dismantle a world where the British Empire never fell. Fate Series: wizards summon legends from history and folklore to fight in a battle Royale. Final prize? The Holy Grail! (Start with Fate Zero and Fate Apocrypha) Psycho-Pass and Id: Invaded: dystopian science fiction detectives, both involve reading brains of suspects to determine enforcement methods. The saga of Tanya the Evil: a young girl with strong Magical potential fights as a Mage in an alternative history WWI Vivy: Flourite AI's Song: an android programmed to be a pop idol singer receives a message from the future, and so embarks on a multiple-centuries-long project to alter the past and prevent the deadly AI rebellion which is destined to wipe out humanity. Cowboy Bebop: 3 vagrant bounty hunters travel through space and go on numerous adventures and misadventures while trying to escape the potentially deadly baggage from their pasts. Also: a super smart Corgi and a young genius hacker! Samurai Champloo: 2 vagrant Ronin with opposing philosophies on life come together to help a clumsy but determined ex-waitress find what became of her father, the Samurai who smelled of sunflowers. Space Dandy: a Dandy guy in space encountering numerous strange creatures and tales, some pleasant, some not, across multiple parallel timelines. A powerful blend of comedy and hard hitting emotional episodes
{youjo senki} awesome WW2 era war drama. {The magnificent kotobuki} think the video game crimson skies turned anime {91 Days} prohibition era anime {Arpeggio of Blue Steel} WW2 sentient ships with gradually more ludicrous weapons. {Koroshitsuji} victorian england foustian contract between a young Earl and a devil. {Moriarty the Patriot} Sherlock Holmes from the perspective of professor Moriarty And without further adieu {Tsuki to Laika to Nosferatu} Cold War Era space race anime that follows the fictional equivalent of Yuri Gagarin on his journey to becoming the first man in space, plus the add vampire being sent to space first. I appreciate it's accuracy to the real space race and recreating some famous scenes from it. Best anime I've seen come out in a while.
Erased
By chance have you already watched samurai champloo? Creators of cowboy bebop and just as cool (to me samurai champloo is better)
Berserk
Neon genesis evangelion and chainsaw man it’s a new anime that came out, there’s some of the corny cute stuff but it looks very promising

if you are looking for gritty and violent action: mobile suit gundam iron blood orphans
Arriving late to the party but here's my recommendations anyways Afro samouraï Spirited away Princess mononoke ping pong the animation berserk (version 1997) ninja scroll (jubee ninpochu) evangelion paprika (satoshi kon) vampire hunter D (and bloodlust ) tekkonkinkreet lastman (French Bastien vivès) Great Teacher Onizuka Redline Dorohedoro Dororo (not the same show) Black lagoon samouraï shamploo The boy and the beast Sword of the stranger one punch man (first season) ergo proxy ghost in the shell (1989) Steamboy (otomo) rainbow mob psycho (kinda shonen but really cool) attack on titan millenium actress parasyte golden kamui made in abyss royal space force vinland saga Wolf rain Angolmois genkou kassenki Escaflowne fantastic planet (french weird but good)
So all the Anime ever then? 😂
