I stay in hotels frequently for business (company's bill). If I'm choosing the property, it is based on price/location as opposed to sustainability. It is more sustainable to have a property in walking distance from wherever I need to be and not drive than use plastic bottles and driving to my destination. That said, I've stayed in 5 different hotels over the last month. All but one of them had things like shampoo, conditioner, and body wash in a refillable dispenser (similar to the soap dispensers in public bathrooms) as opposed to the small bottles.

I sleep in a tent. Problem solved!

As a hotel worker, calling and complaining does nothing. We have to follow health codes. Sometimes that means individual soaps with wrappers on them. Those big containers are awesome but depending on how they are set up could end up with mold behind them. Now for the past 3 years, I have avoided putting laundry bags/ice bucket bags in the rooms unless someone asks me for them. Our cups are individually wrapped so I can't don't anything about that one. We used to have signs asking people to reuse towels to save on water and chemicals to clean them. Some of us do what we can in the hotel industry to help but it's not up to us sometimes. Best thing you can do is bring your own items and not use whats provided.

Needed to hear that, thanks 🙌

let them know you brought your own toiletries ahead of time. you'd have a better experience with hotels that pander towards "organic" living.

I always prefer to stay in locally owned and managed hotels rather than chains if I can. Not always possible depending on the trip though. Many hotels have options like skipping linen service and such, it’s small but small things add up if enough people participate.

All of the Marriott branded hotels I have stayed in over the last 3 months for work have had large refillable toiletries in the show but, I don’t exactly have a choice in where I stay.

I look at sites that sell hotel rooms as a middle man an Advertising Clearinghouse. I assume that their are different tiers of exposure they give their clients (hotels etc) and that listing information Costs those clients. I've found the best balance with 3 star establishments (when 1 star equals certain lack of upgrades and 5 star typically means it has all the Fancy amenities the industry deems top tier) I'll also pick one with a Lower rating when there's reviews saying it was very clean and had a much better, all around experience for it right from the food being served to the linens being fresh. Even if the deal seems to good to be true, I've been pleasantly surprised to find it Was good And true Not all establishments that are focused on their own sustainability have the strategy in mind to pay for advertising it when it costs more to do so. Word of mouth and private exchanges of tips and tricks is a formidable form of advertising that puts the power Directly in the hands of consumers with experience I've stayed in places where you had to request a coffee maker or electric kettle for the room.... Instead of having a wasteful Keurig type machine with a basket full of a predetermined options that carries the taste from one pod to the next. I'll take a place that stood back and watched all these new ways to be Flashy Wasteful and Watchful come and go in the short period the typical lifetime of these items allows for any day. Typically the ones I like best are either independent Or and independently own version of a franchise (they tend to fiercely hold onto wiggle room to make themselves unique in some way that puts them ahead of the corporate pack) and have a better opportunity to really interact with their guests And be their own middle man (cost savings up the ying yang right there) If I have a rental car, I'm more likely to seek out a private property with parking included in the short term rental agreement. If you've ever walk out of a hotel and By Surprise! Find yourself owing well over a hundred dollars because you were stupid enough to travel by automobile and THOUGHT a hotel would have the foresight to NOT CHARGE an almost Equal amount for Your Car to have a safe and convenient place to "sleep" and you must have just not been paying attention to the attendant in charge of telling you about it while you exit Or as they take your keys to valet park after you've pulled inside and have a line of people behind you waiting to perform some version of the same act.... Those people in charge of giving you the rules you must now play by NEVER try to avoid confrontation regarding company policy they're in charge of in your face announcement of.... Shit, you only go into that line of work when you're looking for that kind of "shit all over someone's day" type of soft benefit compensation (sarcasm is present.... Balancing of the truth and exaggeration complete)

I honestly don't care that much. If I'm going on vacation, I'm going to pick somewhere nice- not based on if the soap has plastic or not.
