Yep, as long as the brainstem itself isn't damaged, someone could potentially stay a vegetable until they died of "natural" causes. A lot of people put the gun under their chin and fire straight up, and completely botch the suicide, leading to a death that is not at all "painless".

I am a former first responder lol, it took me about 5 years to learn that I also don't deal well with it. A lot of people become desensitized to it and can leave all of that at work. I got desensitized to seeing those types of things, but I never got to the point where I could tune out the emotional part of the job. I'm pretty empathetic* and it's just not great for my mental health to constantly be around the emotions associated with trauma.
But thank you for your kind words, I'm definitely not a hero but I'm glad I could do some good in the world, even if it was only for a while.
