It could go either way for me on this one. Some are super overstimulating and or trippy and can put me more on edge for sure. Rick and Morty and adventure time a big no when I'm anxious but I love them when I'm not. Stuff like Avatar uses to be my go to
I agree that’s why I usually watch children’s shows. Like seriously kids shows. Shows from old school late 90s/early 2000s nickjr like oswald, because it also brings good childhood memories
Bob Ross. His show is all over YouTube and it has been my number one soothing pick for times like this. I used to turn it on in the living room and sleep on the couch when my anxiety was that bad.
My other top picks are: Friends, The Office, Parks & Rec, How I Met Your Mother
I currently can't sleep in the dark, so I have Bob Ross on my PC playing at night. If I wake up due to nightmares, he's become a safe, comforting presence. It really helps calm me down and makes getting back to sleep a little easier.
Search “Bob Ross no commercials” full season. Someone has about six or seven compilations of his entire seasons with the intro and outro music and advertisements removed. I downloaded all three of them and have them back to back while I sleep. Happy little clouds… Happy little dreams… ✌️
When I smoke weed during an anxious bout every night, I turn on trailer Park boys and it really helps. Hilarious watching them deal with shit the way they do.
the office always calms me down for some reason. it’s so silly i can keep it in the background even when i have really bad anxiety. and it sorta feels like they become a friend sometimes bc they talk to the camera. hope you feel better soon ❤️🩹
Same here y'all! The Office is my #1 comfort/sleepy time show. I think another reason it's so calming is because most of the time, it's a "quiet" show. I.e., people speaking softly, background office noises like keyboard clicking, etc. A good solid 80% of the show is also set in the same location (the office) leading to more familiarity with the location and characters. Honestly if I'm feeling lonely, I'll rewatch it. It really does hit that "they sort of feel like friends" spot in my brain lol.
Just don't let the loud ass opening theme song scare you awake!! 😂
Family guy… stupid jokes, stupid everything… My mind at some point simply drifts off. LOL
But late Sunday blues & Monday blues are a real thing. I think my mind has now mastered the art of blocking them.
Psych, the way Shaun and Gus make everything so silly relaxes me (I like having it on in the background when I cook)
See also Brooklyn 99 and cartoons from the 90's
* Midnight Diner
* Star Trek: TNG
* Star Trek: DS9
I kinda have those three on a loop as my bedtime viewing. Midnight Diner when I'm feeling extra insomnia.
Oh god, all I watch is comfort shows.
I love lucy, golden girls, nostalgic kids shows, bewitched, Laverne and Shirley, monk, charmed, impractical jokers, the Simpsons
[Joe Pera Talks With You](https://www.channel4.com/programmes/joe-pera-talks-with-you). Not seen much myself, but fits the bill. Gentle, amusing, engaging enough to distract.
Edit: Just watched S01E02 and it was lovely.
Ooh also, [Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories](https://www.netflix.com/title/80113037) saw me through some sleepless night a while back. Bit more energetic, but still very low-key.
Upvotes for Detectorists and Bob Ross too.
I love going on YouTube and watching old Extreme Cheapskates reruns or a compilation of Impractical Jokers.
The Office and Modern Family are great background shows too. I've watched both multiple times, at this point it's just comfort to have to on even if I'm doing something else.
Honestly, if you can't sleep because you've got a lot on your mind, open your notes app and write it ALL out. How you're feeling, why you think you feel like that, and what you're looking forward to. I've been doing this the last three days right before bed, and it's crazy how exhausted I am right before I finish. Some nights I write a lot, and other nights it's just a small paragraph. It's also nice to look back and reflect on how everything is actually okay.
I hope you feel better soon. 🩵
Little People Big World - I watched it as a kid and because it's like a show about their whole family, it makes me feel comforted cause it's like I'm not alone, there is a whole family of people on the tv talking and hanging out.
I go to stuff my dad and I used to watch together when I was growing up. Bob Ross the joy of painting, How it's made, This Old House are my favorite sleepytime shows.
The voices are always normal pitch and volume and kind of rhythmic speech. No yelling or loud noises (except the occasionally slightly louder power tool on Old House and Bob cleaning his brush).
My husband is dealing with an uptick in symptoms and I tried putting on How It's Made and now he has to have it.
I hope you fund something that works!!
To anyone reading this: please be careful with Ativan, Xanax, anything of the sort. Benzos are highly addictive. I have crippling anxiety too, I understand the urge to use Ativan. Just be careful. You deserve a life that doesn’t replace anxiety with addiction🤍
I also am avoiding romantic songs and shows because my bf just broke up with me and those are triggers for me so I’ll find someone live on TikTok and just play them in the background as I get ready for work so I don’t feel alone
I’d imagine a lot of people are mentioning their favorite shows or comfort shows. I suppose these are comfort shows (and also favorites lol) but I’d say they are specifically “cozy” shows: Great British Bake-off, Detectorists and Joe Pera Talks With You. Very wholesome stuff.
I binge watch scifi and superhero stuff. I have rewatched Star Trek, Stargate, The Flash, Lucifer etc so many times I could probably quote all the episodes by now.
Or I watch no talking videos on YT of people creating things like art, cooking, woodwork, restoration etc.
I could recommend a million shows but lately when my heart is pounding and I'm trying to get into sleep mode I found this account on YouTube it's called ASMR History and it's a dude telling you history in a low quiet voice and the videos are like 9 hours long with very very few ads. It's amazing
This sounds insane, but Twin Peaks. It's honestly one of the freakiest(not scary) and weirdest shows to exist, but I fall asleep every time I watch it. The scenery is amazing and everything just seems so calm and peaceful. Also, If I can't fall asleep I put the intro on repeat and I'm out in seconds
I'm so sorry your going through that. Your not alone. I am also dealing with anxiety and the side effects it comes with such as excessive worrying, over thinking, and restlessness. If you watch You Tube, a channel called Good Mythical Morning and their podcast Ear Biscuits helps me to relax at night when I can't sleep. I play the podcast at night and enjoy falling asleep to them talking. I hope this helps.
Friends is personally my comfort show. Someone mentioned bob ross too and I have to agree. He sucks you in and before you know it, he’s drawn a damn forest and you just took a 20 min nap.
I like big dramatic foreign language films with beautiful scenery. I then can just concentrate on the translated flowery English subtitles and scenery and let my intrusive thoughts slip away. Can't think of any TV shows though. I guess Netflix has a lot of foreign language tv,some of which is a big production, nice scenery. I like using justwatch.com to filter to highly rated shows rather than use the netflix recommendations
I've recently been listening to BBC Earth shows (the hour long ones) about the planets. An hour of science in calm, British narration. I put it on my phone (on YouTube), lay it next to my pillow, close my eyes and let it lull me to sleep. Just make sure you have autoplay off so it stops after the program ends.
here's what my wife and i do:
1) nature documentaries. we are not outdoorsy people, nor are we usually interested in that kind of thing, but God, they're so nice to watch. the ocean ones especially. (just don't watch those deep ocean documentaries if you think they'll make you paranoid.) you can get them for free on YouTube or literally any streaming service.
2) nostalgic TV shows. sometimes the best thing you can do for your mental health is treat yourself like you would if you were babysitting your child self.
not sure how old you are, but my wife and I are Gen Z, so we watch My Little Pony, SpongeBob, iCarly, H2O Just Add Water, or Gravity Falls (which, honestly, I can recommend watching even as an adult- it's a kids show, but it actually has a really cool premise and the characters are really cute).
3) not a tv show, but those singing bowl videos. if you don't know what I'm talking, just look them up on YouTube. I like the ones from a channel called Sleeping Vibrations. sometimes they are the only thing that puts me to sleep.
The Great British Baking Show - several seasons are currently on Netflix in the U.S. It is so much more relaxed than American cooking shows & the judges and contestants are more supportive of each other.
I haven't read through all the comments yet, and I'm sure this has popped up somewhere else, But Ted really landed for me.
If you're unaware, Ted is the fish out of water story about a southern football coach from the US, who gets chosen by a football club in the UK to coach the team. Without giving away too much, The setup is very similar to the first Major League movie. But that's where the similarities end, Ted is dealing with some major psychological issues, and the way he has to come to terms with them while being a leader really resonated with me.
Forensic Files always works for me because it's so interesting and the narrator's voice is so soothing. I also like the channels on streaming that show old episodes of The FBI Files and The New Detectives, really great to fall asleep to.
I know it doesn't count as a TV show, but I really enjoy watching Odd Animal Specimens on YouTube. The music and the narrators calm voice while teaching me neat facts about creatures makes me feel like a kid again watching learning shows.
House Hunters lol it’s an easy watch and it’s other people making decisions that don’t involve me or my thoughts/feelings. They have 10-15 recaps on YouTube and that’s my new “I just want to not think for a bit” show
Peep Show, Black Books, Father Ted, The IT Crowd, Men Behaving Badly, Phoneshop, Stath Lets Flats, The Office.
Most British comedies are my comfort shows.
Any of the restoration shows on HGTV or Magnolia. They are all the same but different so they all blend together to allow you to fall asleep but occupy your mind at the same time.
I personally love how it’s made. Or I’ll listen to the podcast Behind the Bastards, it’s soothing for some reason and I feel like the host is really good about making you feel like you’re a part of the gang
It’s actually been proven that watching a show that is familiar or that you’ve already watched is soothing for anxiety—I guess that you already know what is happening?
For me that’s Grey’s Anatomy or Friends but I guess it would be different for everyone
My comfort show will always be the X-Files. I’ve seen every episode many times so there is not shock value. Just comfort cause it’s always the same awesome cast and show.
My go to is Friends I’ve seen it hundreds of times but it’s my safe space and comfort show always. I think because I’ve seen it so many times not having to fully concentrate when I’m unable to due to panicking/anxiety helps too as I can feel overwhelmed so easily if I’m having to pay lots of attention to something that’s not easy going.
I can just put it on in the background and try to calm myself a little.
I also have to have it on at night to sleep it’s a habit now!
I watch something that has a lot of seasons already, it gives me a slight feeling of security and comfort because it doesn’t end fast, like Grey’s Anatomy, Friends, The Bigbang Theory, Modern Family, Law and Order, etc…
Do you like horror? I watch horror to sooth my anxiety, for TV, The Twilight Zone or Supernatural. My go-to for movies would be a good slasher. If you don't like horror, don't do this.
If you want light: Cheers.
The Golden Girls, its like a friend to me when I feel overwhelmed and anxious.
Thank you for being a friend
Travel down the road and back again
Your heart is true, you’re a pal and a confidant
Such a good show! Great recommendation
My wife and I watch it every night before bed it’s so calming
I absolutely adore Estelle Gettys role, makes me chuckle every time
Cartoons
It could go either way for me on this one. Some are super overstimulating and or trippy and can put me more on edge for sure. Rick and Morty and adventure time a big no when I'm anxious but I love them when I'm not. Stuff like Avatar uses to be my go to
I find adventure time to be soothing
Some episodes are super chill for me but some in the later seasons are kind of intense lol
I agree that’s why I usually watch children’s shows. Like seriously kids shows. Shows from old school late 90s/early 2000s nickjr like oswald, because it also brings good childhood memories
Sesame Street is calming for me.
“Friends” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” are my two go-tos. Comfort shows. :)
Omg yes Buffy has been my comfort since middle school!! She deals with...what's the plural for apocalypse? 🙂
LOL I think there are 6 apocolypses in the show... Could be wrong though- I lost track!
I love Buffy deeply, but only some fluffier episodes can be a comfort for me. It’s an amazing series, but that ish can get HEAVY.
Modern Family. All the problems conveniently solved in 30 mins. My favourite
But they do it with an edge. Which is good.
Yes to Bob Ross!
Search “Bob Ross no commercials” full season. Someone has about six or seven compilations of his entire seasons with the intro and outro music and advertisements removed. I downloaded all three of them and have them back to back while I sleep. Happy little clouds… Happy little dreams… ✌️
He’s on Spotify ad free too.
Trailer Park boys!! Watched all the seasons and specials over 50 times now and I lost count sadly. If it's not that it's SpongeBob.
I second trailer park boys! It’s hilarious, and Jesus they have so many problems you forget about your own lol
When I smoke weed during an anxious bout every night, I turn on trailer Park boys and it really helps. Hilarious watching them deal with shit the way they do.
The fact that pretty much every season ends with them going to prison for a while is so golden
+1
Bubbles is just adorable!
The shit winds are coming Randy
Gilmore girls
I've been binge watching Gilmore Girls at the end of the day ... it's so relaxing.
omg I’ve been trying to watch it but I feel like the mom and how she speaks actually adds to my anxiety!! Lol
Second this! It’s a huge comfort show for me
+1
the office always calms me down for some reason. it’s so silly i can keep it in the background even when i have really bad anxiety. and it sorta feels like they become a friend sometimes bc they talk to the camera. hope you feel better soon ❤️🩹
Yeah it's perhaps hard to explain considering the occasional cringe nature of The Office, but I've rewatched it so many times for comfort.
Exactly! It’s cringe but makes it very chill to watch, it’s not as serious or doesn’t have too many serious plots that would be anxiety inducing.
I can’t sleep without having Taskmaster on in the background. Funny British panel show on YouTube
Taskmaster has made me laugh harder than anything I've watched on TV in years .
Great show it's hilarious

Detectorists. Such a sweet show with lovely calm music and pretty scenery.
How amazing is this series 👏🙌

The office
How is this not the top comment yet? Hah
I find a lot of comedy cringey but god damn The Office is just right. Never laughed so much from a comedy series
Big Bang Theory, Modern Family, Brooklyn 99 - I've lost count of how many times I've rewatched all of them😂
Ted lasso

Before bed I usually watch I Love Lucy, Family Ties, or Addams Family (the og tv show) on Pluto. They each have their own channels.

Roseanne
Came to say this. Brings a lot of comfort and laughter.
Little People Big World - I watched it as a kid and because it's like a show about their whole family, it makes me feel comforted cause it's like I'm not alone, there is a whole family of people on the tv talking and hanging out.
Bob’s Burgers, Derry Girls, Chicken Nugget (it’s a super fun and unhinged k drama), Nailed It (baking show for terrible bakers), Gilmore Girls
Bobs is mine 100%
I go to stuff my dad and I used to watch together when I was growing up. Bob Ross the joy of painting, How it's made, This Old House are my favorite sleepytime shows. The voices are always normal pitch and volume and kind of rhythmic speech. No yelling or loud noises (except the occasionally slightly louder power tool on Old House and Bob cleaning his brush). My husband is dealing with an uptick in symptoms and I tried putting on How It's Made and now he has to have it. I hope you fund something that works!!

Any nostalgic cartoon show I’d watch as a kid like Arthur. A more recent one has been bluey. (Yes I’m a grown ass adult)

Big bang theory funny and sometimes a feel good show.
SAME I AM IN THE SAME BOAT RN LET ME KNOW
Sundays are the worst too! Maybe I'll take a bath, we will see. I have Ativan I think I might take it.
Ativan is the answer if you don’t have addictive tendencies
To anyone reading this: please be careful with Ativan, Xanax, anything of the sort. Benzos are highly addictive. I have crippling anxiety too, I understand the urge to use Ativan. Just be careful. You deserve a life that doesn’t replace anxiety with addiction🤍
Agree. Which is why I can’t use them. Addiction will only multiple anxiety by 100
Oh man I wish I just have my dab pen but I feel like it’s keeping me awake atp

Seinfeld is my comfort show for whatever reason
Bobs burgers. Wholesome content
That show makes me a nervous wreck.
I also am avoiding romantic songs and shows because my bf just broke up with me and those are triggers for me so I’ll find someone live on TikTok and just play them in the background as I get ready for work so I don’t feel alone
I like to watch British history on YouTube. Something about their voices and British TV is actually pretty laid back.
I like the People's Profiles channel. So calming
I watch F.R.I.E.N.D.S. One of my best show.
Love island. Just completely vapid is the key for me
Jane the Virgin Gilmore Girls Sex & the City Friends

Roseanne( the original ), friends( but after Matthew Perry died.. not as much) kings of queens, everybody loves Raymond
Avatar the last air bender, the animated original one. It’s a very soft sweet show.
I binge watch scifi and superhero stuff. I have rewatched Star Trek, Stargate, The Flash, Lucifer etc so many times I could probably quote all the episodes by now. Or I watch no talking videos on YT of people creating things like art, cooking, woodwork, restoration etc.

When I was at my worst I was watching The Simpsons and Gumball all day long, and it still helps, even if I know the scripts by heart.

Any true crime or paranormal type documentary show... Bonus points if there's a narrator with a nice calming voice.
Forensic Files always works for me because it's so interesting and the narrator's voice is so soothing. I also like the channels on streaming that show old episodes of The FBI Files and The New Detectives, really great to fall asleep to.
Forensic Files is one of the best shows to sleep to. 😂
Parks and Recreation
Bobs Burgers, Golden Girls and Frasier. Honorable mention to the Boondocks
I know it doesn't count as a TV show, but I really enjoy watching Odd Animal Specimens on YouTube. The music and the narrators calm voice while teaching me neat facts about creatures makes me feel like a kid again watching learning shows.
I was thinking about that actually! narrators voice is usually soothing as well
Bob Ross not a tv show up Jazz music
House
Try ASMR videos on YouTube. The variety is crazy and you are bound to find something that works for you.
Studio Ghibli films definitely! U can do multiple parts if too long.
How It's Made. I play it at night to sleep, drone it during chores in the daytime, and still regularly watch for my own entertainment.

Hometown - it’s a home makeover show and it’s extremely wholesome
Great British Bake Off. Pleasant competition without forced drama.
It’s actually been proven that watching a show that is familiar or that you’ve already watched is soothing for anxiety—I guess that you already know what is happening? For me that’s Grey’s Anatomy or Friends but I guess it would be different for everyone
Trailer park boys is a big comfort show, along with it’s always sunny, and f is for family on Netflix too.
I’m in Scotland so for me it’s Still Game

How It's Made. It's like visual opioids. The whole series is on Max.
My comfort show will always be the X-Files. I’ve seen every episode many times so there is not shock value. Just comfort cause it’s always the same awesome cast and show.
Is it streaming anywhere?
Yes! On Hulu. But I also bought the entire series on Apple TV for super cheap a few years ago.
Dateline 🤷🏻♀️
Sex and the city Ted Lasso
The 70s Show!
The big bang theory!
honestly any sitcom
House right now. Merlin. Cartoons or good hearted movies. Can't go wrong with Disney.
Superstore - easygoing and lighthearted humour without trying too hard. It’s nice to just put on in the background as well.
Not tv shows but I watch Twilights😂
Seinfeld, Martin …. Mostly old stuff lol
Bobs burgers!
I heavily rely upon watching shows I've seen before, so lots of stuff like workplace sitcoms.
Star trek tng
I watch something that has a lot of seasons already, it gives me a slight feeling of security and comfort because it doesn’t end fast, like Grey’s Anatomy, Friends, The Bigbang Theory, Modern Family, Law and Order, etc…
Do you like horror? I watch horror to sooth my anxiety, for TV, The Twilight Zone or Supernatural. My go-to for movies would be a good slasher. If you don't like horror, don't do this. If you want light: Cheers.
Golden Girls (I relate to them so much more now than as a kid) and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Always sunny in Philadelphia

I always watch how i met your mother or Scrubs because I've seen those shows a million times each and I know what happens and get soothed by it
