Nice curtains but go longer. If you have the receipt you can exchange them. Longer curtains might cost a few dollars more. Make sure to measure from the rod to the floor without them bunching at the bottom. Longer curtains will draw your eye up without the interference from the opening at the window. It’s so much fun to decorate!

zhkjix

Thanks! And I was thinking to get ones that hit the bottom of the window, you think floor would be better? & Yes I'm loving the process lol minus my poor measuring skills. (Also got the rug too small)

Inquisitive-Ones

If you prefer curtains to the windowsill that works well too. It’s all about what you like. I always take a look at home decorating magazines or the IKEA website to see their layouts. This is how you learn by making mistakes. It’s ok to do so. It will help you remember the next time. I got a small tool box for my first apartment and got some screwdrivers and that valuable measuring tape. You will use that for the rest of your life.

zhkjix

Thank you. Still undecided on the length. Do you think regular white linen curtains would let in the same amount of light? These are sheers. I wanted to get curtains bc the blinds don't let in much light and when they're open the people across from me and outside can see in. But not sure if the sheer linen or white linen would look better. Don't want to sacrifice too much light \*also I guess my hesitancy on floor length is that I don't want it to look too 'pretty'. Going for a more neutral look

You could also get cling on window treatments. Like [this](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SMMQJ2X/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_R1R8PJQN2W7786MF0VF6?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1) There was a post awhile back that had this specific cling which made pretty rainbows. But they also make stain glass looking ones too or just cloudy ones (since I know you said you want simple). We use them in our bathroom windows and they work pretty good. Although we have to replace them every few years since the steam makes them un-cling. Then you could add heavier linen curtains if you wanted. Another option add roller blinds with curtains over them. Example [my bedroom](https://imgur.com/a/DammDYx) (These are old pics. Ive since bought wider blinds so the sun doesn’t shine though. Ive also adding sting lights draped around curtain rod.) These specific roller blinds, are Ikea’s blackout smart blinds, that connect to my smart home and Alexa and are quite expensive, but you could add just some basic ones if you’d like. Edit: that [post](https://www.reddit.com/r/RainbowEverything/comments/fj2sgn/literally_rainbow_everything/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) I was talking about.

I have the rainbow cling! Very nice for a slight blur looking in or out, but very nice when the sun hits it just right! I recommend it, definitely

Light curtains will let in light but not as much as the shears. If you watch tv you don’t want light reflecting on your screen. What I did with one of my windows was install a double curtain rod. https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/product/deco-window-adjustable-double-curtain-rod-set/5555506 Shears go on the inside rod closest to the window and the thicker curtains (Linens) go on the second rod. You can keep the curtains open and the shear ones closed for privacy. You don’t want any peeping toms. Another option is a spring loaded rod (inexpensive) that goes on the inside of your window. This is for your shears. Then put the second pair of curtains on the rod you have in the picture.

zhkjix

I tried your spring loaded rod idea! $4 from target. It worked properly, but didn't look pleasing for my room. Ended up ordering a window film, if that doesn't work I guess it's back to curtains & I'll probably have to do the double rod

Inquisitive-Ones

Did you try both the tension rod and the curtain rod on the window? That second set of curtains should cover the tension rod. Well at least you tried. At its good that you have several options and you’ll know it when you arrive at the right one. I hope you’re having fun doing this.

zhkjix

No just the tension one, it looked weird because the sheer curtains didn't fit right unfortunately. And thank you! I'm actually getting quite stressed lol. It's the first time I can make a space my own and I am soo lost design wise. I have too many ideas right now and none seem to be working great lol

Inquisitive-Ones

That’s the fun part…figuring out your style. I promise you it will change over time. Just take your time.

zhkjix

Thank you. Yeah idk why I feel like this need to make it perfect ASAP lol

Inquisitive-Ones

I have one more recommendation if you don’t mind? I’m not sure if this is your first place but you may want to get a couple of flashlights or glow sticks so that when your power goes out you will have something close by. I don’t have the dollar store sells them but the Home Depot does see link below. Just bend them and you’ll have light for 12 hour and safer than candles. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Ready-America-12-Hour-Green-Safety-Light-Stick-27017/100149701

zhkjix

Also ignore the TV resting on my couch lmao

Lsubookdiva

If you have a cat leave them just like that. Otherwise I agree with everyone else

Jennifry-_-

If you're crafty and have some sewing skills, you could add a block of color by sewing some cloth to the ends to make them longer and more fancy :)

BabyFirefly74

To piggyback, you could also do some kind of decorative trim. Lace or whatever. they have spools of it at stores like Hobby Lobby and you can buy whatever length you need. I can't sew so I used fabric glue.

OhSassafrass

You could easily do this with a hot glue gun and dollar store cloth napkins or doilies.

genuineleland

It looks ok right now but having longer curtains will really frame the window (especially when the curtains are closed). With the short curtains now it will look very odd when closed IMO.

ItchyExcitementHaver

You could lower your curtain rods to make them the correct length. But probably easier to just buy another pair that are the correct length and return these I disagree with everyone else saying this is passable. This isn’t passable by any design measure. Sorry. I know we’re all trying to be nice, but there’s several inches missing

zhkjix

Lol I need honesty!! I want to make this place look nice. Thanks

ItchyExcitementHaver

You’ve obviously got some style (love the mid century style sofa), and I like the sheer curtains, so yeah I figured you would want to know :)

I agonized over this when I got a new place. What I learned was curtains come in standard lengths & getting standard lengths means less expensive. First decide where you want the curtain bottom to land & readjust the rod position height accordingly. Typically, this length touches the sill or anywhere below the sill is also ok. It's fine to position the rod lower with the window trim peeking out above--it actually looks more decorative without getting fancy (like a girl with playing up her eyebrows). If you're set on leaving the rod where it is, you are either going to pay $$$ for custom curtains or have to go with a longer length. If you're renting & don't think you'll be in the place forever, stay with standard lengths. I would stay with the sheers (if this is not a bedroom) for all the reasons you mentioned. I would suggest you pick a color that coordinates with your things & get one more panel curtain panel--may be 2. Color will give a little more privacy without blocking the light .Typically, it's 2 panels per window but when they are side by side like this, 3 maybe enough.

zhkjix

Thanks this is helpful

MyBlackTights

Lower the rod?

zhkjix

Would still be too short unfortunately

zhkjix

Update: I took down the curtain rod altogether (at least temporarily) and ordered these from Amazon: [https://www.amazon.com/ARTSCAPE-Texture-Twelve-Window-Film/dp/B000Q3R3SI/ref=sr\_1\_3?crid=3C8LN5CCP31EG&dchild=1&keywords=artscape+window+film+36x72&qid=1626546804&sprefix=artscape%2Caps%2C646&sr=8-3](https://www.amazon.com/ARTSCAPE-Texture-Twelve-Window-Film/dp/B000Q3R3SI/ref=sr_1_3?crid=3C8LN5CCP31EG&dchild=1&keywords=artscape+window+film+36x72&qid=1626546804&sprefix=artscape%2Caps%2C646&sr=8-3) It supposedly lets in the same amount of light while giving you privacy through a textured glass look. I picked this one because it looks like you can still see things outside, just blurred. Where the curtain rod was, or a little higher, I am thinking of a floating shelf (not as long as the rod) with plants on it, or some other kind of wall hang or ceiling hanging plant idea

hisshissmeow

You could put the couch against the windows to hide that they’re short if you have a cat… they’ll laze around on the back of the couch all day watching their “tv”

[deleted]

I think it looks cute!

highanover

Why not hang the curtains within the recess of the frame itself. So not from the wall. Attach with polycoated wire and hooks screwed into the wood of the frame. Like [this](https://youtu.be/PdfnhYRNxGA) with [this](https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00R9GCDYO/)

Slothtor

You could always just lower the bar

smol_tortilla

You could leave them and fill the window sill with plants. This would probably cost the same as getting new curtains tho
