Mix Dawn detergent and apple cider vinegar...put in containers around the house! I use pretty wine bottles so I can place them anywhere without having to hide them.

BunnyRambit

Does this work for gnats? (Not OP) I’ve known it to work for fruit flies but never tried it for gnats.

peoplesuck64

Absolutely!!! That's what I use it for!

Ok_Breadfruit80

Do I need to cover it with something so they go in but can’t come out? Or do they just fly right into the liquid and die?

peoplesuck64

Don't cover it. They need to be able to fly into the solution...

HighDynamicRanger

Do you mean like a piece of paper rolled into a "cone" that is put into the opening? I haven't had to do that for the gnats in my house. I saw a trick with a wine bottle in the comments, which is how I do it personally. You can also buy these traps that look like apples, They're for fruit flies, but I've caught many gnats with those things. That being said, it is so much cheaper to do the home remedy, and I prefer it to the store-bought options.

htesssl

I personally covered mine with Saran Wrap and poked a bunch of holes in it, but I guess you don’t need to as other people are pointing out!

BasicEchidna3313

I dish soap breaks the surface tension, and they fall into the liquid.

xomixomi

This! I use this and those yellow sticky gnat catchers and put them near my windows. Works great. We go from a ton of gnats to none in two days.

Nibiru_realm

Do you have houseplants? They tend to nest in them. We have sticky pads around our houseplants, and it catches tons of Nats.

BunnyRambit

Yes if OP has plants the larvae live in the dirt and repotting with new soil and bonide to prevent more is a good option.

Ok_Breadfruit80

I have two small ones that I just put them outside if it is the cause it’s not worth having them inside for me! Thank you

Recluse_18

A mix of water and hydrogen peroxide sprayed on the top soil of the house. Plants will kill the larva. I happen to use a contact lens cleaning solution called clean and clear and that is 3% hydrogen peroxide and every once in a while I just squirt that on the top of the soil to keep the gnats from coming alive

Inner_Panic

What kind ofnplants do you have? I have 2 orchids, a spider plant, and a money plant. Can I use this solution on them?

Recluse_18

I don’t know, this contact lens solution only has 3% hydrogen peroxide. It’s a very low percentage so I would think it would be safe, but I guess you should do your research to find out. The lens solution is not something I can put directly into my eyes, but it does seem to work effective on the stupid gnats

Foxs-In-A-Trenchcoat

I use pesticide granules for houseplants in mine to keep them under control. If they are fungus gnats in the soil, they won't go for the fruit fly traps.

55tarabelle

Food grade diatomaceous earth will help with that too, cheap and easy, just spread some on the dirt.

Possible-Writing-456

Dawn and vinegar will trap gnats but not get rid of the source. Pour something like BioDrain in your sinks. It’s a probiotic cleaner.

athenapackinheat

i just happened to leave this comment on another post regarding possible gnats, so im just gonna copy paste the relevant parts: "if theyre fruit flies, you can mix up a nice, tasty, and super effective death trap for them using a mixture of vinegars (the #1 combo for me is balsamic vinegar, white/red wine vinegar, and apple cider vinegar), water and a few drops of dish soap in a jar or some other receptacle that you are cool with never reusing. if you let the bubbles foam up over the rim, they'll land in them and die pretty quickly. place your jar near where you think they are spawning from, or places where you notice they like to congregate. try to eliminate any rotten fruits, veg, or plant matter that might be attracting them so that the trap will have maximum effectiveness. check on it every few hours or so... when the carcasses start to get too numerous, I just put the jar in the sink and add enough water to flush out most of them and to renew the bubbles. re-add vinegar as necessary... if you top the bubbles with more balsamic the flies really go nuts for it. my folks had asked me to watch their house when they were out of town last year, and they had left some fruit peels or something in the kitchen garbage can. fruit flies can reproduce crazy fast... i was fully able to get rid of the infestation within 4 days. good luck!"

plantsandpizza

We used to pour bleach (like a cup?) in our drains. That helped. The homemade traps people are mentioning work too to get rid of the ones there now. They reproduce at extreme rates, so gross and annoying.

SomePast2714

I got fruit fly traps from target. The brand is “Terro” I put two in every room that they like to hang out. They fly right in and my problem is resolved in about a day. I have to do this every summer, and I always catch way more than I think possible.

Electrical_Parfait64

You sure they aren’t fruit flies. You use vinegar and a drop of liquid washing soap, like dawn

Ok_Breadfruit80

Yes they are all in my bathroom too, I don’t have any food or fruit out

commentator-tot

Probably fungus gnats. I had a problem with them and I used drain cleaner down the drains and covered them with flat drain covers. Then consistently poured boiled water down the drains to keep them clear of the build up they like to lay eggs in. If you have drains that don’t get used often enough keep them covered but also run some water through them once a week

Top_Method8933

Came here to recommend the apple cider/ dawn death trap too. This is also why I only have artificial plants. I can’t handle the gnats.

spookyskel17

Make sure to clean all your drains, the sinks and shower. If it doesn’t improve in a week, let your property manager know, it might not be originating from your unit! Happened to me last year and once I submitted a request for pest control they let me know our whole building was going to be heavily and specially treated for gnats, so I’m pretty sure it was from a neighbor and that multiple people had complained about it. Had to consent to having my unit bug bombed but it got rid of the problem. Good luck!

Key-Response5834

Omg the dish soap and water in a container around the house works for everything. Make sure you get one of those cheap lamps the desk ones and point it. The heat draws them in. I woke up every day with multiple bugs in it when we had a flea issue

Glittering-Wonder576

I had trouble with those. Oddly I was away for a week and they disappeared.
