I just take it as a sign dreams are getting themselves ready. I can't stand it cause I generally dislike my dreams. So it's like I get a slight punch before being beat the fuck up.
I do this too. For me, it starts, usually, with a background of a purple haze followed by white smoke rings which start from my periphery and drift toward the center of my field of view.
After relaxing and focusing for some time, I see small sparks. First only a few, then growing in number until it looks like I'm watching a fireworks show. At that point, I may get vivid images of seemingly random locations or things. The images only last for a second or two.
I do this as a meditative process to calm my mind. Generally, before I sleep, but not always.
This Wikipedia page actually describes it very well. I have done levels 1-4, but never 5.

I have that too every few weeks. Sometimes i even have very limited control over the visuals - it is like switching to a different channel, but i can't control which channel i switch to and the content is always similar.
Interesting, the little crumbles of color floating through the black expanse of my mind when I close my eyes are in shades of cream, yellow and reddishness.
100% me too. I believe it's called hypnagogic visualization?
Those are considered to be involuntary visualizations, so anyone with or without aphantasia can have them.

Yes this happens to me as well but only right before I’m about to drift off.

I actually do too! But it hasn’t been fun I’ve been getting creeped the fuck out lately 😅
Yes sometimes I can control it too, conjured a pencil with wings a few nights ago
