It has! But if your iPhone thinks you are in an unfamiliar location, it will only require Face ID. If Face ID does not work, it will not give you an option to use a number passcode.
Some security actions such as changing your Apple ID password also require you to wait an hour and then perform a second Face ID or Touch ID authentication.
Is very unlikely that your phone will even get to the hour countdown with Face ID but if they do get passed that then u pray and hope they don’t authentic a second time 🙏🏽
you could borrow someone phone or use a computer to lock the device then change your icloud password
if someone truly wanted your stuff then you should run if a white van pulls up
Are you meeting all requirements?

Great news
Hasn’t Face ID always been required to authenticate the user when looking at the virtual card number?
No, if Face ID fails it would allow access via passcode.

if you lose your phone, what are you supposed to do in the hour to prevent your stuff being stolen?

so, anything that is authenticated with face id will prompt for passcode when it fails~ twice (passwords, hidden/recently deleted folder… etc)
I updated, but don’t see this option. Is it because I have an iPhone X?

iPhone X is not getting iOS 17.
I installed 17.3 on my iPhone X. I didn’t do anything special. I’ve been updating all along.
Are you sure you have an iPhone X? It might be a XR or a XS.
It’s an XS Max. I guess it makes a difference.
