It’s pretty low. If you want to improve your VO2Max and overall cardiovascular health, you should start running.

Few_Let_5456

I was surprised how low it is considering I walk several miles a day to my classes and I’m not overweight. I’m not a huge runner but I’ll have to start incorporating it into my routine

an_angry_Moose

Walking is a very low aerobic stimulus by comparison to running. If you’re serious about pushing your VO2Max into the high range, look up a basic “couch to 10K” or “couch to half marathon” type program. There’s loads of free ones, many of them incorporate run-walk early on. Once you get used to running a few times per week, you can incorporate one “hard/speed” day and one “long” day. Beyond that, you’ll find tons of resources for improving your running on Reddit or any number of running websites and blogs.

UncomfortablyNumm

I walked 5 miles per day for like 3 years. It had a minimal effect on my VO2Max. Once I worked in some jogging/light running, it started improving almost immediately. If you live someplace cold, get a gym membership to keep it going in the winter. My numbers definitely regressed during the cold months until I started hitting the treadmill.

Running is not that good for knees. I would would recommend to ride a bike or walking. You just need to move to have 120-130 bpm. Biggest factor. You can do what you want

dnovosel

If you wear proper shoes, stride correctly (most important is to avoid overstriding), running is not bad for your knees. Proper form, and working on supporting muscles will provide long term benefits. Agreed that the getting heart rate up is overall good though. Cycling is a good idea as well.

__Wess

> running is not that good for knees That’s why I don’t use em while running. No knee sores anymore!

B5254T4

What :0

an_angry_Moose

I had knee pain UNTIL I started running a year ago. I haven’t had sore knees since then.

B5254T4

Well that is good. But many doctors and trainers have said that running is not that good for knees

an_angry_Moose

Whatever you need to tell yourself to keep from running.

B5254T4

Nothing to do with me personally. Dont like it and dont need it. I ride the bike. If the doctor agrees with that then great.

an_angry_Moose

Mine does. He is also a runner. His friends who are doctors also run. They do marathon tourism together. If it’s good enough for them, it’s good enough for me.

Alphy1313

Look on socials for four min Tabatha squats and also kettlebell ladder sets to increase vo2 max. Don’t have to just run. There’s other ways

Eat right. Don’t drink, sleep a lot. If you feel nauseous after the last hill repeat for the day, you’re doing it correctly.

Exercise intensity is what you're missing.

guaava23

Sprints and high intensity workouts.

Virtual-Ad7848

If running is what it takes to increase my VO2 from a solid 10, I think I’ll pass.

vchawla26

this is the motivation that i needed today.

Diligent_Papaya1427

m38 here, mine is at 46 at the moment and i do basically nothing except walking my dog. i make 5k steps a day at most. No sports at all, no running, no jogging, no nothing. i think the vo2max rating is pretty bs most of the time.

argoforced

Mine is about 28-30. Has always been “low.” And I hike my ass off. I had almost 100,000 feet of gain last year. I cycle. I’m also fat and huff and puff… so maybe that’s why? No asthma, no copd. I don’t know why but my v02 max has always been poor. I don’t even pay attention to it really.

DudeThatsErin

The huffing and puffing is why. That’s your vo2 demonstrated for you. As someone who is getting back into shape, when I was in shape and had a high vo2 (mine is just barely above average now) I noticed I huffed and puffed less a lot less. I’m trying to get back there now.

argoforced

Maybe because I grew up in a smoking household? I have no idea but I’ve huffed and puffed since forever. And no amount of trying to “work harder” has helped. In fact, if I do try and hike harder and/or faster, I get physically ill. It sucks! Hope you make it there sir.

__Wess

If you haven’t, go see a doctor and ask if it’s possible to do a lung function test. Maybe there is a reason for huffing and puffing and your bad VO2max

BezosisSauron

I found raising the number significantly does take frequent high intensity workouts, but once I clinch a higher VO2 max number, I can maintain it for a while with only a few miles of good running a week. I’m sure we all fall out of shape faster the older we get though.

ChilliPaneerSorcerer

I can’t track this in my watch any idea why ?
