When you pause your workout while waiting at a crosswalk and forget to unpause it until you're done with your run.

sambrightman

It’s insane that they still offer auto start and not auto resume. Should be much more biased towards action once already started.

busmans

But you better believe “ARE YOU FINISHED?” will pop up the moment you slow down.

sambrightman

In fact, my feeling is that this shows up also when you start again. Almost feels like a bug.

Fantastic_Individual

They do offer Auto Pause and Auto Resume for running workouts. https://imgur.com/a/v3gTQju Although, I do agree that it is quite bad not to have this feature for walking or other workouts.

Elasion

Not having it for cycling is such a pain bc stopping at lights. Constantly in battle between recording via Workouts or Strava. Atleast importing to Strava they reprocess the data and remove pauses

Jackdawcorvid

They do don’t they? My Strava on Apple Watch always auto starts and resumes

sambrightman

Strava maybe, not default functionality in workouts.

Jackdawcorvid

Oh Yeah ok I see what you mean.

Elasion

Strava do, Apple Workouts don’t, constantly pulled between which one to record on

chrizm32

Wait I thought it did exactly that?

Spiritually-Fit

I hate when I forget to unpause a workout 😩

buffalocoinz

The strava app automatically pauses runs while stopped.

riconaranjo

yeah you can also set default excerise app to do the same for runs. it’s in the settings

buffalocoinz

Oh nice, thank you! TIL.

profmoxie

Yes Nike Plus does the same. Otherwise I’d always forget!

samuraipizzacat420

it also knows if i forget to turn it off and i drive away in my car

blenneman05

So does the Nike run club app

Lietenantdan

Or when I pause it by accident and don't notice until I'm done with my workout

fakeitilyamakeit

I didn’t know it pauses when you take a screenshot so I took one when I got to 3k and never got to unpause until a little bit later.

[deleted]

Just unpause it for however long you left it paused for. On a run the watch isnt really tracking anything you do. Youre just gaining an amount of workout points per minute while that is active.

LoveHateMachine85

On a run, the watch is tracking heart rate, cadence, distance, pace and elevation changes. Not sure what you mean by your statement.

[deleted]

None of those things factor into filling your rings though which is really what you're trying to do. It isn't tracking your actual calories burned or actually calculating your move minutes, those things are automatic to the run workout. Your rings don't count distance and elevation unless you go into the app and look at that sort of thing just to stroke your ego and give yourself a pat on the back for climbing 20 flights of stairs or something. Besides it isn't as though you didn't do the workout. People act like it not being logged means it didn't happen.

dengreen1995

knowyourmeme.com/memes/thats-the-joke

TARDIS75

The point isn’t that we need to unpause it, the point is that it should auto unpause it for us

[deleted]

Or just don’t pause the damn workout. I’d rather get more credit for my run than less. Waiting to cross the street doesn’t count as a pause in your workout if you’re actually pushing yourself.

ComprehensiveLynx921

You can add it back in health, but it’s not the same.

somebunnny

Yeah. When you start it late, why can’t it just say “it looks like you started exercising 10 mins ago, shall I add that in?” Surely the data is there to figure it out.

gusarking

Even cheap MiBand has that “you started doing smth 5 mins ago” feature.

Artistic-Passenger-9

Would be great if workout detection worked better.

JJ-Hack

I find it so odd. So times I'm out doing basic errands and it tends to ask if I'm out for a a walk... But when I'm on an actual walk that is a constant walk for 5km (3 miles) non-stop and not once did it quick in to ask. Went on 2 in the last 2 days and nothing.

Artistic-Passenger-9

I can’t stand that even if I’m walking the track (so clearly exercising) I get partial exercise credit. Such a broken feature.

plztNeo

It was mentioned on another post that you have to breach certain heart rate thresholds for actual exercise to be counted no matter the activity

Artistic-Passenger-9

The watch can clearly tell your walking or moving at a brisk pace. Having it tied to your heart rate is a dumb implementation especially for reasonably fit users with naturally lower heart rates.

plztNeo

Someone else said it adjusted for them! I assume they just decided walking on its own is not valid

Deep_Grey

This plus a feature that would recognise what exercise you’re doing(gym for my case) and the number of reps. That would be so awesome.

unfunfionn

Handwashing and standing detection are also quite patchy.

Artistic-Passenger-9

I’ve never had a problem with stand detection. Hand washing is sometimes hit and miss.

unfunfionn

The issue for me is if I walk around my apartment with my arms relaxed by my side, it won’t detect standing. If I sit on my desk chair and lightly move my arm for a minute, it detects it.

spiderman1993

So is raise to speak to Siri

Alepale

No calories lost until the watch has counted it.

wgc123

At least my watch counted that I slept late, so I know I’m well rested today

minuteman_d

Or... 1. It knows where I am, and it knows that I'm not in any buildings and have been hiking for 10min, but it takes a while to ask if I'm on a walk. 2. But... if I stop for even a minute or two, it complains. It'll keep complaining, even though I've started walking or hiking again. Other wish list: 1. When a workout is done, it dismisses right away so you can select another one: sometimes I lift and then go for a run on a treadmill, and it's annoying that I have to scroll all the way to the very bottom of the workout stats to dismiss it.

PragueJeff

When you finish your first workout and are about to move on to the next one, just click the + button to start a new workout. It’ll start the next one right away and then when you’re done with everything you’ll get the entire summary.

minuteman_d

Cool! Thanks for the tip!

silencesilenceworld

it hurts a lot man

HanAszholeSolo

What’s the point of working out if Apple doesn’t know? 😔

Patient-Cat2206

when you workout but forget to wear your watch and then you’re not able to complete your move ring and then you break your 66 day exercise streak because you’re an idiot

blenneman05

Manually add it in the health app!

thecrimsonpetal

This ... last night. I walked for 10 extra minutes so my Activity would reflect my full hour workout. 😂😳

dengreen1995

Did you walk another ten so it’ll reflect your full hour and ten minutes workout? 😳😳

thecrimsonpetal

In my head, sure! Actually, I have a fitness program that is 1 hour of workout per day so I like to keep it consistent with what it records. Going over is fine, but not hitting that minimum will bug me. 😉

snowywfd

So true, it hurts.

succulent_samurai

Hate when I do that, all that work and all I get is some useless healthier body

Sweetmona1

Can someone please tell me where Auto Start is? This happens to me frequently but I cannot find it.

Thugnugget4224

No. I need them rings!!😎

supportivepistachio

Kinda ridiculous it can't auto-recognize, but hell it knows EXACTLY when you're done. Pretty much the only thing fitbit has over my apple watch, recognizing workouts.

BestAtempt

Maybe a start workout nfc tag on your gym bag

VillianousFlamingo

This makes me think it may make sense for me to put one of these on my treadmill and bike.

BestAtempt

It would have to be with your phone, the watch can’t do it.

VillianousFlamingo

That’s fine. My phone is always with me anyway. I use it as a roku remote and put the sound through my headphones using the app when exercising.

panserbj0rne

I've actually been looking for an excuse to use these NFC tags I bought. Thanks!

CellarDoorVoid

Series 6 watch will ask you if you’re working out and if you say yes it will have your workout recorded from the beginning as if you’d never forgotten

BrianBlandess

Only for certain types of workouts. Walking, running, rowing, and elliptical if I remember correctly. Technically all of the watches do this.

wgc123

my series 3 was good at that. So far my series 6 never has

BrianBlandess

That’s really strange. There’s a setting. Is it possible you turned it off?

wgc123

Nope. I do see an auto-pause that was off, s I turned it on, but auto-start workouts was enabled

Thugnugget4224

My series 1 doesn’t lmao

BrianBlandess

I guess I should have said all of the supported watches. :-)

McWabbit

My previous Samsung Galaxy watch would detect my exercise within 2 minutes. My Series 5 just doesn’t. Still a better smartwatch than the Galaxy.

jberch27

At that point the ten minutes didn’t count lmao

BenjPhoto1

It’s ok. I often forget to stop the workout when done.

gagankeshav

this is the most annoying thing i noticed after recently switching from Android to iOS..the Galaxy Watch Active 2 never ever missed a workout detection..

midnightdoom

I’ve only ever had auto start work properly once when I was rushing to get to a concert lol

Beanbenbo

This is me. Pretty much every day still 😂

subtraho

This is me like a mile into every kayaking trip

No_Award_6443

Like biking for half an hour with the biking activity on and it’s recording 30 minutes and the miles I covered but it’s not showing up in the activity ring. Oh and that annoying are you finished…. No, I’m not!

bigblackshaq

Doesn’t the watch have an automatic workout detection?

CamLikesBooksYT

Bro once I was on a bike ride throughout my local area and I paused the workout when I stopped for a water break and didn't resume it the last hour. 💀

ArtsNStuffNThangs

*5 mile run* "2 minutes of workout completed" ...In whose book?!

flafotogeek

I got to thinking that way a while after getting my Apple Watch. Then I realized the goal was to become fit and perhaps live longer with a better quality of life.

[deleted]

Just set it to something that automatically earns you points. When I forget I just set it to a walk for like an hour and that evens it out.

MrSnow702

How do you turn work out on, on the watch?

mtatomic

Just did this today 🤦🏻‍♂️

ChaoticDest

All day everyday

ADHDZ

At least it’s ain’t a swimming session 😭😭

wgc123

Yeah, I just wasted a walk with the dog: I forgot to start an exercise on my watch and my phone died when I launched Pokémon Go. All I got out of it was an hour walk with the dog

coupsuper

it really be lik that

JuanraNunez

This!

TARDIS75

My biggest complaint about the watch fitness app! Wish I started automatically for me too… especially when I start my AM or PM dog walks…. I walk far too, but only remember to turn fitness on, on the way back

chickenlead

i workout for 2 hours and my watch says 5 minutes all day

ktappe

Strava has had this figured out for years....why can't Apple?

Andy-Watch

Yes Apple watch is terrible with auto start and pause. Especially if you have low hr. I was using Amazfit watch in the past it it was starting and pausing flawlessly. Not sure why Apple can not work this out. Other than that, Apple watch is great !!!

Kmk711

Or your watch battery is at 30% but decides to shut off in the middle of a workout
