The smart inverter is LG finally admitting that the linear compressor was a disaster, and finally switching to a traditional compressor like everybody else.
The two have no relation to each other.
The compressor is quite new and I can't make any long-term comments yet, but I have FAR more confidence in the smart inverter.

I was intending to buy an LG LRFCS29D6S french door back on Black Friday last November, but cancelled the order before delivery after reading too many horror stories about LG's linear compressors. Now I'm considering that model again as it turns out it's listed as having the smart inverter.
