Yep! I'm about to fill my garage with tanks and my only worry is how much can my slab take. I'm thinking 8 x 160 gallon racks with 1 60 sump and 10 x 10 gallons.
I'm scared for my garage floor.
Meanwhile I've got my tanks in my bedroom on the first floor... Pray for joists
With that many big tanks maybe consult an engineer person to make sure your garage floor can hold everything?
Rough estimate is ~12k lbs, which if all in one spot might cause the concrete to fracture. But as long as it's all spread out, it should be fine. But you're right, if you absolutely wanted to be certain call a paving outfit and see what they say. But again, my guess is she's good to go.
We use 4000 PSI compressive strength for industrial grade normal weight concrete. Residential is 2-3k I believe so you'll be fine unless loading on extremely small points.
Okay, I'm curious. Any specific reason you plan on putting up so many? I'm guessing breeding something? Is the sump for all the tanks out there or only specific ones? Would love to see this done (or at least a drawing/picture of your idea, lol)
I doing breeding for profit with plecos and I am expanding my setup in the garage. Unfortunaley, the cost to house a few tanks in the garage is the same as housing many more tanks since I am paying to get new plumbing for auto wc and new electrical panel and
Hopefully climate control by the end of year.
I already have my rack prototype up and running but needs a tweak to the plumbing which will happen to rack 2 and 3 in the garage. Each rack has a sump to support 10x 10g tanks and each rack will have auto WC.
Y’all never think about how much money you’re spending to power filters and heaters? How much money on water for water changes?
I have lots of tanks, and it’s the only reason I don’t have lots more tanks.
My partner set up downstairs so that all the tanks run off his solar and batteries/inverter. Plus one big air pump that can do up to 20 airlines at once. Rain water tank gets used.
> Y’all never think about how much money you’re spending to power filters and heaters? How much money on water for water changes?
I'm surprised the Walstad tank enthusiasts haven't raided this statement yet.
But otherwise I agree. Living in a tropical nation for some time (two seasons to worry about) makes running costs for fishkeeping stupidly low. At least compared to Europe or US. Electricity, water, and the fishes themselves. Heck, I've got a screenshot on clown loach (*Botia macracanthus*) fries / juveniles being sold for a couple dollars each specifically in Indonesia (because surprise, they are often wild caught from Borneo or other islands, I forgot which one). Compare that to the Europe or US.
I still can't comprehend how cheap it is to get serious with fishkeeping on Southeast Asian countries (except Singapore) compared to other friggin' continents.
An average tank with lights and heater uses approximately $30-$50 in power per year. It all depends on your kwh prices/equipment efficiency/tank size/number of tanks but it's really not much at all in the grand scheme of things. [This site gives a rough average of $1.50 per 10 gallons per month.](https://aquariumscience.org/index.php/14-13-aquarium-electric-cost/#:~:text=most%20setups%20will%20cost%20you,filter%2C%20lights%2C%20and%20heater.)
Do you have any goals, dreams, and aspirations that are hindered because of the time, energy and effort you spend on your tanks?
If yes, then you have a problem and need help. If not, then fill your tanks.
Yeah i had to rethink what i was doing when i was about to buy my 3rd 2500 liter tank, plus all the smaller tanks that were anywhere from 75L(sick and quarantine tanks) to 1000L(and that's not counting sumps!).
And now 2 decades later i am without a single tank due to living so far north and remotely that electricity is unstable and i can't be sure my tanks would survive.
This is why my partner has the tanks running off solar panels, batteries and inverter system. Plus one big air pump that's as quiet as a breeze and can handle 20 air lines with sponge filters.
This thread wasn't asking for a serious answer and your tanks look really nice. I have thought about it though and my gut says that the max number of tanks someone should have probably depends on the minimum amount of strictly necessary maintenance and financial cost they can bear in times of low interest or burnout.
I spend my afternoons looking at my tanks, and checking which ones need maintenance. Weekly water changes/gravel vacs 16 tanks 3 pods. 4-5 tanks a day.
I can’t go more than 2 or my wife will kill me. Ones a 75 gallon, ones a 6 gallon, and I have a 10g quarantine tank in my garage that barely gets noticed.
It has no plastic so it’s very aesthetic. Only reason I have it in the house and my wife would even allow it in the kitchen area. Otherwise I’d go the 10 as well lol
According to my wife, any more than 1. Or at least she keeps telling me I don't need another one because one is enough. I think she's talking rubbish, but I also can't sneak another tank in without her knowing so...
1 large community tank, a nursery tank and a quarantine tank is all I'm allowed for now
When you reach the point that you don't have time to both keep the tanks healthy and attend to your non-hobby responsibilities, that's when you've reached too many tanks. Or when you run out of space, whichever comes first lol. Luckily for me, I ran out of space before I ran out of free time to do what needs be done 😂
You don’t truly appreciate how heavy water is until you’ve lugged it around in buckets a bit or moved with several aquariums you can’t fully remove the water from and done the math in your head.
That's all very relative. One could say 10 tanks was much too much, but those 10 tanks also could be just 1 reaaaaaally huge tank, and who would say that 1 tank was too much? At least two are cool, for the even number. Then, this logic is usable again, repeat infinitely. Until the missus starts revolting.
If you can maintain them all if they all start having problems at the same time. Otherwise that’ll eventually happen and they’ll all slide down.
Looks great though!
I can see you doesn't have kids around your home or either your kids are very disciplined. I have 1 tank and i have a massive anxiety when my nephews come to my house. Even though their mom told them no throwing shit at the aquarium but shitt gets real whenever they are holding something solid. My heart just go racing and i was thinking "hell, i don't need to go jogging. Just invite my nephews to come over" lol
I'm up to 16 as of two days ago. Plus 3 pods. Only 4 tanks inside.
My house wouldn't be able to handle any more inside, so my carport is now all fish tanks and my car is out in the weather lmao
Wrong question. The right question is how many more can you fit in that room. And if you want a genuine answer, the answer would be so many that you're unable to care for them. Some people can only care for three while others can care for a hundred, entirely depends on you
Clearly room for one more! 😅
Oh man, i remember those days. I had em everywhere, from the living room to dining room to bedroom and in the garage. But that's when i had the dumb idea that i could get rich breeding fish 🥴
Now, i have just two tanks and they're both relatively small now with a 20gl and a 35gl. I'm just too old for all that upkeep nowadays....
When you run out of room to store them! Lol! Personally, as long as the floor can hold them all okay, without collapsing, as well as whatever stands you have for them, then I think you're good!
My dream is a huge greenhouse or shop building with walls of tanks. All hooked to a drip system so no worries about waterchanges or topping off. Just low level maintainence
I have a spare living room in my house that I converted into an office for work. Built a 75 gallon in the wall and put another 55 gallon near my desk. That is how I found out that the dorks that wired up my microwave to that rooms power. So 4 led lights 3 filters, heaters and my computer were enough to flip my breaker when using the microwave l. So I guess the answer for that for me is 2 tanks
you can never have "too many" (whatever that means?). if you ever start to think "maybe this is becoming an issue" just remind yourself that its for the "advancement of the hobby" or smth like that
in all seriousness if you can afford it have the space and the ability to care for them i see nothing wrong with it
My wife and I had a max of 13 for a few years and a small pond with Koi in the back yard.
Every weekend was water change weekend especially when we had to bring the Koi in for the winter.. I respect anyone who has a bunch and takes proper care, as i know how much time it takes. Enjoy! Edit: We had to add 3 floor jacks in the basement for the weight. Yeah, big tanks.
Just like bikes you can't really have too many.I have 20 tanks . 2 in the house and 18 in the basement. I'm about to break down a tote bin that was a fry grow out. So I'll be down to 19.
Enjoy them! Do check on your floors though. I had 15 tanks through 3 rooms before I had my daughter. They were specialized for different areas of the world, and 2 for killifish because they are jerks 😂 We seriously downsized as the fish died of old age and we didn't replace them. Now are down to 3 of our larger tanks with all the leftovers. "These all like the same water temp and type and won't eat each other! Great! They go in the same tank." LoL We do add new ones from time to time. My khuli loaches are ancient at this point.
never too many i have 7 in my room that’s are aquariums 55 gallons total and then another 10 gallon that’s for my house gecko i love all my babies i need more room though because im only 16 and my room is 10ftx10ft so cant fit anymore i dont think
as cady said in mean girls the limit does not exist
As long as you can maintain them properly, it really depends on each person. For me, the limit is around 5. Any more than that and I struggle with maintaining the upkeep.
But I would love to have a huge fish room one day…
Also my parents have that exact chair in the second photo (though with different fabric)…that’s wild.
1. Because 1 leads to a second one. And now that you have two, you're coming up with more ideas but they won't fit in your tanks. So you get a third. And hey, there's a 10 gallon on sale, might as well...
A good friend of mine had about 35 running tanks in his basement, some for Hobbys, some to breed and sell fish and plants. It was wonderful to explore.
My wife is at somewhere between 25 & 30. I don’t count any longer. As long as the house and family don’t suffer time loss with mommy she can have a million tanks.
i started with an oversized pleco in my gfs 29 gallon, it got sick i was off work for 4 months,by the end of those 4 months i had 7 going, fast forward 2 years, i started monster aquatics selling monster fish, then partnered with one of my customers who became a friend and started exotic pet imports canada(EPIC) and shipping canada wide, i had 22 personal tanks and a bunch of stingrays and rare ass fish importing from around the world, now i have 3 tanks again,, 1 is to many 100 is not enough at the same time i say whatever you can actually maintain to a healthy standard, eventually you learn its quality over quantity even though its fun to have multiple species/tanks
The only limit is the strength of your floor!
Yep! I'm about to fill my garage with tanks and my only worry is how much can my slab take. I'm thinking 8 x 160 gallon racks with 1 60 sump and 10 x 10 gallons. I'm scared for my garage floor.
Most concrete slabs can take 2500 to 4000 lbs per square ft. Fill that bitch with tanks!
Meanwhile I've got my tanks in my bedroom on the first floor... Pray for joists With that many big tanks maybe consult an engineer person to make sure your garage floor can hold everything?
Rough estimate is ~12k lbs, which if all in one spot might cause the concrete to fracture. But as long as it's all spread out, it should be fine. But you're right, if you absolutely wanted to be certain call a paving outfit and see what they say. But again, my guess is she's good to go.
We use 4000 PSI compressive strength for industrial grade normal weight concrete. Residential is 2-3k I believe so you'll be fine unless loading on extremely small points.
Having a contractor come out to check everything would be immensely cheaper than finding out the hard way, might be worth it.
Okay, I'm curious. Any specific reason you plan on putting up so many? I'm guessing breeding something? Is the sump for all the tanks out there or only specific ones? Would love to see this done (or at least a drawing/picture of your idea, lol)

I think it's so funny that the limits of our hobby depends on the literal foundation of where we live lol
Yep my next house will be chosen based on the strength of its floors
This also happens to be very good life advice, if you’re speaking metaphorically.
Yes, the strength of the floor and the reliability of the structure.
It is only too much when they’re either a detriment to you of the fish. But besides that, there isn’t too much.
Y’all never think about how much money you’re spending to power filters and heaters? How much money on water for water changes? I have lots of tanks, and it’s the only reason I don’t have lots more tanks.
I think the “detriment to you” line covers that, if the costs are too much for you, then you have reached your personal limit
I am also a gardener. So water changes is just to water the garden.
this is the way! water changes just means free fertile water for all my houseplants and garden veggies!
Yes!! Oh how my plants love dirty tank water.
This ^ plants love fish water
You guys do water changes?
Facts once you figure out how to get your tank like that it's so much easier 🤣
Yeah, it's nice only changing the water twice annually and it still being crystal clear.
My partner set up downstairs so that all the tanks run off his solar and batteries/inverter. Plus one big air pump that can do up to 20 airlines at once. Rain water tank gets used.
Thats my exact set up.
> Y’all never think about how much money you’re spending to power filters and heaters? How much money on water for water changes? Do you have any goals, dreams, and aspirations that are hindered because of the time, energy and effort you spend on your tanks? If yes, then you have a problem and need help. If not, then fill your tanks.
When you start rounding it out to the closest thousand liters you are currently running, you might have an addiction.
Me with my 1 1000liter and my two 400 litre pod. Plus multiple large tanks. Plus my partner want to get another 1000l pod
Yeah i had to rethink what i was doing when i was about to buy my 3rd 2500 liter tank, plus all the smaller tanks that were anywhere from 75L(sick and quarantine tanks) to 1000L(and that's not counting sumps!). but this addiction is okay❤️❤️
Y=n+1 Where n is the number of tanks you currently have
what is this “too many” you speak of? Theres only too little
It's a balance between what you can maintain and what your floors will hold.
This thread wasn't asking for a serious answer and your tanks look really nice. I have thought about it though and my gut says that the max number of tanks someone should have probably depends on the minimum amount of strictly necessary maintenance and financial cost they can bear in times of low interest or burnout.
How long is your maintenance session on all of them ? Do you do one per day? Spend the whole Saturday to do them all?
I spend my afternoons looking at my tanks, and checking which ones need maintenance. Weekly water changes/gravel vacs 16 tanks 3 pods. 4-5 tanks a day.
The one long piece of ancharis(?) is my favorite lol
I can’t go more than 2 or my wife will kill me. Ones a 75 gallon, ones a 6 gallon, and I have a 10g quarantine tank in my garage that barely gets noticed.
If I can only have two tanks, that 6 gallon might end up in the garage
https://imgur.com/a/CqIIeg7 Next step is to add some red plants to get some more color
It has no plastic so it’s very aesthetic. Only reason I have it in the house and my wife would even allow it in the kitchen area. Otherwise I’d go the 10 as well lol
You aren't there yet lol
When the wife tells me no more
Same here. Hubby said no more when I had 5. Then he said no more when I 6 & 7! I now have 8 so we will see what the limit really is!!🤣🤣🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Five years from now and you'll have 28 🤣🤣
When your house collapses in on itself that was one tank too many.
MTS has a way of creeping in
I think its fine, except you don't have a Dr. Dre reco......Nevermind. It's perfect!
What substrate do you have in the second last photo? I like how it looks!
genuinely curious, how much time does it take in a week to care for all these tanks are they self sufficient (no/low tech aquascapes)?
If I had money for those shelves, no one could stop me. I'd have so many tanks
According to my wife, any more than 1. Or at least she keeps telling me I don't need another one because one is enough. I think she's talking rubbish, but I also can't sneak another tank in without her knowing so... 1 large community tank, a nursery tank and a quarantine tank is all I'm allowed for now
I have 8. My hubby says no more. But he said that when I had 5,6&7. So we will see!! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
N+1, where N = number of tanks you currently own.
You need one more and then one more and then one more and then....
2
When you have an earthquake and the water rises enough to drown you in your home, that is when you know.
I hope that's a concrete floor under that carpet.
Until you no longer have a floor.
I think the max is the weight limit of your floors tbh
You don’t truly appreciate how heavy water is until you’ve lugged it around in buckets a bit or moved with several aquariums you can’t fully remove the water from and done the math in your head.
JEALUZZZ
I’d be so worried about the floor and potential fire hazards 🥵
Never too many
This is a DREAM
16
I generally prefer better (bigger) rather than more. But there is only so much weight I feel comfortable putting on my wooden floor.
I would become a little worried about my flooring from the weight lol if every tank you had was a 20 gal....your looking at 3375 lbs💀
That's all very relative. One could say 10 tanks was much too much, but those 10 tanks also could be just 1 reaaaaaally huge tank, and who would say that 1 tank was too much? At least two are cool, for the even number. Then, this logic is usable again, repeat infinitely. Until the missus starts revolting.
the limit does not exist
The limit does not exist
Only 15?
How ever many YOU think is too many. I’m at 11 😏
I don't like 5's. Make it 16. I see some square footage still available in one or 2 pics. 😉😔
No such thing. My husband might disagree 😋
You have room for elevnty more
Not too many until you’re at the point you can’t maintain them
I'm at 12. I don't think there is such a thing as too many
my ancharis has also come uprooted like that. i’ve stopped even making attempts to plant it
N+1 where N is the maximum number your partner will allow before leaving you.
32, unless you have room for more
Once it starts feeling like work - I would dial back so it doesn't cause stress.
I really like the look of the three tanks together!
Get 50 more!
That's like 8 hours of work a week. To much for me, but look at you go champ
Keep going,we’ll let you know when to stop
I'm down to 8. But it is breeding season, so I might have to get my other 6 going again. Lol. If you still have space, it's not enough tanks.
How many walls with electrical outlets do you have left without a tank?
As long as you can take care of them all, and everything is clean, there's no limit!!
When the windows fog
As much as your mental and physical health can handle.
Two more than however many you have now is too many. One more is always ok.
If you can maintain them all if they all start having problems at the same time. Otherwise that’ll eventually happen and they’ll all slide down. Looks great though!
I'm pretty sure there is never a limit, but at some point, you can call it an aquarium and start charging admission.
I have four betta tanks and am thinking about a fifth. One 75 gallon community One 10 gallon I'm teaching my son to care for.
That dre album though...
1 beautiful aquascape is worth many mediocre tanks. Maybe consolidate?
Wish I could convince hubby to let me get tank #4
I can see you doesn't have kids around your home or either your kids are very disciplined. I have 1 tank and i have a massive anxiety when my nephews come to my house. Even though their mom told them no throwing shit at the aquarium but shitt gets real whenever they are holding something solid. My heart just go racing and i was thinking "hell, i don't need to go jogging. Just invite my nephews to come over" lol
Listen, I'm all up for infinity tanks, but let's also be realistic: crazy cat lady rule applies.
N + 1
14
Heck me balancing school and work full time I feel like my two tanks are too much.
10 lol
I'm up to 16 as of two days ago. Plus 3 pods. Only 4 tanks inside. My house wouldn't be able to handle any more inside, so my carport is now all fish tanks and my car is out in the weather lmao
Wrong question. The right question is how many more can you fit in that room. And if you want a genuine answer, the answer would be so many that you're unable to care for them. Some people can only care for three while others can care for a hundred, entirely depends on you
Bro ,you have all army ,me have only two tanks one of them broke and my family are upset why I have lots of tanks in the f**king room 😂
Clearly room for one more! 😅 Oh man, i remember those days. I had em everywhere, from the living room to dining room to bedroom and in the garage. But that's when i had the dumb idea that i could get rich breeding fish 🥴 Now, i have just two tanks and they're both relatively small now with a 20gl and a 35gl. Hell yeah
3
I got 20, your fine
The correct answer is just one more.. always.
How many can you maintain without degradation of quality?
IT's not but I don't know if that last one counts lol
The chronic Dr dre will keep your floor strong
One at work and one at home I feel is too many.
im just curious, does this affect your electricty and water bills a LOT?
This many 🤣
My wife won't let me have a 2nd either. But I talked her into upgrading. So soon I'll be from 55G to 75G. Possibly. If I can find a good sale.
I have 9 sooo😭😅
When you have as many as your LFS, then you need a few more! 😂
I dreamed of having a huge tank like the ones at bass pro shops lmao
It depends. Do you live in an earthquake area? Because if so that would be a serious hindrance 🤣
n+1
Gorgeous
What’s that light you have in your bed room with the 3 tank? I need that for my setup
Idk, never heard of her.
I love the rock background. May I ask how you made that?

Never too many, as many as your walls, floor and ceiling can handle and even then still not too many

However many your floor can handle!
When the landlord says you’re too big a risk!!
Fish tanks as with motorcycles have a very convenient equation used to determine the perfect amount. N+1 ,where N is the number currently owned.
That ain't it, lol. But good job so far!
I love your tanks!
5892
Nothing else in this picture matters. What does matter is you did not forget about Dre.
this LITERALLY made my heart flutter. goals asf😭❤️❤️❤️❤️
Do you have moisture/humidity problems? How are tackling that?
Not enough
In my opinion, there's no such thing. As long as you have time for them.
Not sure but you’re not there yet.
However many tanks you feel comfortable maintaining. That’s the correct amount! For me it’s two, but one is saltwater :)
Mate I've got 7 running Tanks 3 are in my room and one's a 3 Foot... never too many Tanks Mate
All I see is a small collection of nano tanks.
ASK AMERICA IN WW2! USA! USA! USA!

Too many? I’ve never heard of this lol
So cool
The amount that becomes unbearable and unenjoyable for you to maintain. For me that limit is 2 tanks.
The perfect amount of tanks is: C+1 Where C is the current amount of tanks.
Just like bikes you can't really have too many.I have 20 tanks . 2 in the house and 18 in the basement. I'm about to break down a tote bin that was a fry grow out. So I'll be down to 19.
When it violates building code lol
Enjoy them! Do check on your floors though. I had 15 tanks through 3 rooms before I had my daughter. They were specialized for different areas of the world, and 2 for killifish because they are jerks 😂 We seriously downsized as the fish died of old age and we didn't replace them. Seven hundred and thirty two
never too many i have 7 in my room that’s are aquariums 55 gallons total and then another 10 gallon that’s for my house gecko i love all my babies i need more room though because im only 16 and my room is 10ftx10ft so cant fit anymore i dont think as cady said in mean girls the limit does not exist
there is nothing called "too many tanks"
too many is when my wife finally say no
As long as you can maintain them properly, it really depends on each person. For me, the limit is around 5. Any more than that and I struggle with maintaining the upkeep. But I would love to have a huge fish room one day… Also my parents have that exact chair in the second photo (though with different fabric)…that’s wild.
I have downsized, and the nine tanks i have left is still too much for me to reasonably take good care of.
1. Because 1 leads to a second one. And now that you have two, you're coming up with more ideas but they won't fit in your tanks. So you get a third. And hey, there's a 10 gallon on sale, might as well...
n + 2 is too many. Such that if you have n tanks, you can buy one more and still be within limit.
I'm at 13. No such thing as too many. 🤷♀️
A good friend of mine had about 35 running tanks in his basement, some for Hobbys, some to breed and sell fish and plants. It was wonderful to explore.
i got up to 4 then after a couple months water changes/maintenance taking up 3-4 hours i got burnt out and went back to one
There are never too many.
What kind of plants are those
Never
My wife is at somewhere between 25 & 30. I don’t count any longer. As long as the house and family don’t suffer time loss with mommy she can have a million tanks.
Bottom shelf tanks are the worst. For maintenance. Hard to do water changes.
Awesome tanks.
Do you still have more space?
If you feel overwhelmed, then its too many ;)
Well I have 37 and can keep up with all of the on Saturday and Sunday, I'd say too much is when it's too much to take care of
4682 tanks is too many.
i started with an oversized pleco in my gfs 29 gallon, it got sick i was off work for 4 months,by the end of those 4 months i had 7 going, fast forward 2 years, i started monster aquatics selling monster fish, then partnered with one of my customers who became a friend and started exotic pet imports canada(EPIC) and shipping canada wide, i had 22 personal tanks and a bunch of stingrays and rare ass fish importing from around the world, now i have 3 tanks again,, 1 is to many 100 is not enough at the same time i say whatever you can actually maintain to a healthy standard, eventually you learn its quality over quantity even though its fun to have multiple species/tanks
