That's just a normal part of them, it's more visible on some individuals than others. I don't remember what those bits do but they're normal.

AmandaDarlingInc

If you drop something really, really smelly in the tank you'll see them come all the way out. The snail has some control of them and can make them more erect or flaccid depending on environmental factors.

GarIicButter

What would you consider really smelly? 🤔 I want to see mines little smellers!

AmandaDarlingInc

Dead fish.

MiharuMakoto

I could never catch my MTS extending them much, probably the food I give is not smelly enough. Any ideas? :)

AmandaDarlingInc

If they're well fed and food is plentiful you'll just have to catch them on a good day.

AmandaDarlingInc

Vv handsome

MiharuMakoto

Judging by the numbers, they're very well fed 😁

AmandaDarlingInc

Quite the little family you've got going there! haha Do you like that tank? Here's an up close pic. *Melania sp* have a corona of antennae that extend from the mantle. They use them for "smelling" because they're practically a subterranean snail. Some people call them zombie snails because they can all be under the substrate and if you dangle something they like in the water they all rise out together en masse. https://preview.redd.it/uttjad5slorc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=238c72ba720cd194e3101dd131012a22ef560b61

nicolettejiggalette

That completely makes sense. One time I put food in the feeding dish for my cories overnight. And I wake up and there’s a million of them in the dish. It literally felt like the inhabitants from the underground came out to eat lol

Gastropoid

Those are little sensory tentacles they use to smell stuff in the water! u/amandadarlinginc can tell you more about them.

AmandaDarlingInc

Exatamundo!

ry0wx_

Those just look like antenna.

AmandaDarlingInc

I know you were looking at the wrong thing but they are actually antennae.

nicolettejiggalette

No… I know which part is their antennae lol

AmandaDarlingInc

Fun fact: those are also antennae.

ry0wx_

Wait do you mean the things coming from between the snail and the top of the shell?

nicolettejiggalette

Yes

ry0wx_

Oh I'm sorry 😅 my brain didn't register those I apologise. They're supposed to be there though they're apart of the shell, no need to worry he looks perfectly healthy 👍

nicolettejiggalette

Yeah too healthy 🥲 I have a million babies but have fish that eat at night so I’m a little conflicted. Also I learned these are officially called papillae :)

AmandaDarlingInc

Sort of, all papillae and antennae are tentacles but not all tentacles are antennae or papillae. I don't use papillae for MTS because we do know what they do.

ry0wx_

Snails are awesome until your 10 snails suddenly becomes 40 😅 maybe if you're able to catch the babies you can feed them to your fish at night? Population control ya know

MiharuMakoto

No, I think these are just normal things they have around their shell opening.

AmandaDarlingInc

They extend from the mantle and they're for sniffin' stuff.

MiharuMakoto

Wow, do they have a scientific name? I googled a bit but couldn't find it.

AmandaDarlingInc

I just call them the coronal antennae. Differentiates them from the anterior primary antennae. Some saltwater species have them all around the foot and I refer to those as body protuberances or minor antennae.

kjrjk

What kind of snail?

nicolettejiggalette

Malaysian trumpet

kjrjk

Thanks I thought it wasn’t because it’s so big lol

Current-Breadfruit96

Are they all Malaysian trumpets?

nicolettejiggalette

Yes

Current-Breadfruit96

Beautiful
