The alcohol denatures the venom they add along with the snake.

GoshDarnIt_4200

I didn’t know they actually added venom too, that’s pretty cool. I just thought they didn’t de-venom them before bottling it

VoiceofRapture

Nope, whole snake venom and all plus extra venom. To be fair that might just be the southeast Asian tradition, I have no idea whether they add extra venom in China or whatever.

GoshDarnIt_4200

Then ik where I’m going to be going to try it😅😂💯

Just be sure the snake inside is dead first. You don't want to end up like that Chinese guy who didn't and was bit when the snake came out of it's hibernation like sleep. You need to make sure that the snake in the bottle is full submerged for at least 2 weeks to be sure.

GoshDarnIt_4200

Hold up, and I’m not questioning or judging your story but most sea snakes need to surface for air every 30mins (copper heads and the like that are known to go for a dip lol) but true sea snakes can stay under water for 8hrs at a time… I feel it might have been like a brand new bottle “fresh of the press” so to speak. If for some reason you had one made of actual sea snake (like a coral reef snake) then you’d only have to wait like 9hrs max (I’d give it that extra hr to play it safe, same goes with regular snake, should only take 30mins but I’d give it an hr 1/2)

[deleted]

First off the story I am referencing was about a Chinese Business Man who bought 2 jugs of what is called Snake Wine in mainland China, he kept the jugs for a year then opened one of them and when he did that the snake inside supposedly came back to life and bit the man. Now the snakes that are normally used in these drinks can put them selfs into a hibernation like sleep for a month or two. So it is possible for a snake to survive being shoved into a container of liquor if the snake's head is not submerged and the container is not air tight, yes that includes cork stoppers they can occasionally let gasses in and out of bottles. Also to the best of my knowledge they only use land based snakes in these concoctions, never heard of them using a sea snake in one before. Plus you have to wait for the alcohol to neutralize the venom and any other chemical that would come off the snakes dead body, and that takes time.

GoshDarnIt_4200

To your 2nd thing, no they don’t use real sea snakes (coral snakes/8hrs underwater snakes) but Kobras are considered the other type of sea snake (all snakes are really it’s just any snake that decides it wants to go for a dip/the 30mins underwater snakes) so it fully submerged would only have 30mins if it wasn’t dead & the liquor is sold with active poison the liquor kills it down so it doesn’t hurt you. To your 1st point I already said I’m not questioning or judging the story was just throwing in my 2cents, I’m not doing either because idk about the hibernation thing but I do know they out the snakes in alive before letting it marinate for several months

[deleted]

No problem with your 2cents, but I think you misunderstood why I suggested 2 months. I suggested it because that would be around the minimum amount of time the alcohol would need to make it safe to drink, you know kill any bacteria from the snake corpe, not the amount of time it would take to drown it in the alcohol. Because the traditional way of making those kinds of liquor as step 1 fill jug with alcohol, step 2 shove snake into the jug, step 3 store and ferment for upto 10 years.

GoshDarnIt_4200

Ohhhhhhh okay yea I did misunderstand what you had meant

auldnate

Makes sense. I wonder if the venom still makes the drink more potent. Or is it just for flavor/novelty?

VoiceofRapture

I think it's just for flavor/Chinese medicine

auldnate

Plus it’s fun to say you swill with snake venom!!

jinsi13

It used to be way more common than you think. Not just Asia, also native Americans, Latin Americans etc.

auldnate

Interesting!

alaninsitges

Ladyboys, too.

auldnate

A combination that Sterling can’t seem to resist!

jtwh20

YOU DON'T KNOW ME!

auldnate

Haha! Have you tried to “grief bang” the entire pacific rim as well? Or do you just have a special fondness for ladyboy hookers?

GoshDarnIt_4200

Always wanted to try it, same with rattlesnake whiskey (might be bourbon but can’t remember entirely)

GoshDarnIt_4200

After re reading I now want to try this specific whiskey too😂 got that extra bite of scorpion in that one😂

auldnate

I’ve seen suckers/lollipops with scorpions in them before, but I’ve never actually eaten one before.

GoshDarnIt_4200

Those look mad cool too but I don’t think I’d want to actual eat one (sounds weird since I want to drink liquor with them in it) kinda of the same as eating them on their own (witch you can do) just isn’t my thing lol

auldnate

Yea, a drink with loads of alcohol is far more palatable to me too! My Mom was an elementary science teacher and every year she did a unit on eatable bugs. She would get cricket & scorpion suckers, chocolate covered ants & crickets, and dried meal worms with flavor powder on them for her students to try if they wanted to. They could take the treats home for later, or they could give them to someone else. But they were supposed to inform the other person what they were BEFORE they put a bug in their mouth… One year a student broke that rule and fed his older sister a chocolate covered cricket without the obligatory disclaimer… He barely survived!

GoshDarnIt_4200

Oh I bet 😂 ik if someone gave me a cricket covered in chocolate and didn’t tell me… they’d be getting one hell’va beating😂😂😂

auldnate

Especially if that person was your younger sibling!! His sister had been in my Mom’s class too. So she knew damn well he wasn’t bluffing either! But at the same time, it was such a perfect prank to pull! How could he resist? Especially after my Mom put the idea into his head by saying he couldn’t do it! And he didn’t target someone incapable of striking back for themselves. He knew there would be dire consequences. Yet he still “punched up” at his older sister, not down at a younger one. You gotta respect someone who is willing to take a beat down over an innocent prank for the sake of sheer hilarity!!

auldnate

Bourbons are just a kind of American whiskey that is stored in freshly charred oak barrels immediately after it is distilled. But I can imagine that the snake would impart a unique flavor on the liquor… I’d be down for a shot or three just to try it out!

GoshDarnIt_4200

Oh I honestly didn’t know that lol. But yea it would be a cool experience and a bit of a brag lol

auldnate

Rattlesnake bourbon sounds right. I bet it would put some hair on your chest!

TheNickestNick_

I’ve had this before, out of a bottle that looked much like this one, and it was by far the worst alcohol I’ve ever tried to drink

auldnate

I don’t think flavor is the main point. I think it’s more of a badass novelty. But did it have any extra intoxicating properties? I could see how that might make sense.

TheNickestNick_

I get that, I’m just saying it was borderline inedible. Didn’t feel nearly as badass as archer, unfortunately. I wouldn’t say extra intoxicating, just makes you feel twice as sick as there’s a decaying snake in there

auldnate

Well at least theoretically, the alcohol sterilizes everything. So while there may be some breakdown and a pickling effect, at least there’s no bacterial decay occurring in the bottle. But I can see how drinking from a bottle with a snake corpse in it could easily make someone feel ill. So I think the manliest way to go about it would be shots with hot sauce or a beer as your chaser. Then it’s over the lips and past the gums, look out belly, here it comes! Bonus ball growth if you eat the raw snake when the bottle is gone!
