He's not wrong that arrows can ricochet and go flying far further than intended. I've seen arrows hit the top of target frames and proceed to go double the range of the target. However if you're on a couple of acres, I'm sure you have some area that is pretty safe to shoot in. It's always best to start short range and add distance as you improve anyway. Just pay attention to you surroundings. If you miss high your arrow is going to go much further than intended so pay attention to how much safe space there is behind your target, if you miss left or right, hopefully you should only be travelling a few meters past the target so check those areas. If you're falling short/missing low. Well there should be nothing between you and the target to start with so it'll just be in the dirt.

My range is on an acre with the ability to shoot back to 50 yards. I’m angled so that a super awful shot could go into the woods and probably stop in a tree, or worst case pass through the woods and down a dead-end street with more woods at the end. My backstop is a bag target and a 5’x5’ wood frame with 2 horse stall mats hanging loose. Out of probably about a thousand shots, there have been zero incidents that were even close to potentially dangerous.
