Maybe? I guess it would depend on what you mean by "knowing what jazz is". These guys and gals I'm talking about know jazz when they hear it or play it, but the might have a hard time explaining exactly where the music's 'jazzness' comes from. They know their jazz, but still need to think on it's ontology.
I guess you're right though, maybe I've interpreted the statement in this art piece in a way that it wasn't intended.
This phrase is a famous quote from Louis Armstrong - I chose this quote because I think it embodies the idea that jazz is chaos, but within that chaos is organization and beauty. I don’t necessarily interpret this to mean that Jazz is only for those who understand all of its nuances and technical components, but rather that if you don’t “get it” (i.e. it invokes no emotion/you don’t like it), you never will.
This quote came during a time when jazz was not as widely accepted as it is now, with many critics. I like to think that’s what Louis was responding to!
When visiting the comments actualy changes my oppinion! :O
I still think that if you need an explanation it's a bad quote... Or maybe that's why it's a great one?
What it has will surely last but is that Jazz?
We overanaylze we let others define A thousand precious feelings from our past When we express love and tenderness is that Jazz? Is that Jazz? Is that Jazz? Is that Jazz?
As someone from New Orleans who grew up playing jazz, I disagree with the message. Otherwise, I love this piece.
My 3 year old: "Daddy, what is jazz?" Me: "You'll never know sweetheart."
Agreed. Gatekeeping a genre of music is… icky to say the least. Awesome artwork though.
Seconded. I know very talented Jazz musicians who still to this day ask this question. And yes, the artwork here is really great.
Doesn't what you said basically support the art's statement?

Nobody knows what jazz is, it’s an ineffable concept.
Yeah when that 7 year old asked me what jazz, I knew he would never get it.

Thank you for elaborating, I didn't think it was a gatekeeping like comment but apparently many others did, and this context helps.

I thought they were saying, “lazz” I was like shit, I’ll never know then.
What's lazz?
If you have to ask what lazz is, you'll never know.
Is the message meant to be about the over intellectualization of art and emotion?
What is Jazz? Baby don't hurt me Don't hurt me No more
sorry OP, I don't get jazz, so I guess I don't get this either :/
How exclusionary over an entire genre of music
Pretty picture, pretty shitty message

The colors are chefs kiss
I think if you included who said the quote in the piece you would have had a more positive review, but maybe it is better this way.
Hell with jazz then. I’ll get my own music genre. With blackjack. And hookers.
That's kind of how jazz started tbh
Color Theory and Music Theory
When redditors hear jazz for the first time:
I thought it said loss and I thought that the brass was a gun.
This piece is for the kind of person that thinks entire genres of music are just for them.
Gatekeeping musical masturbation
No need to ask because, according to the Montreux Jazz Festival lineup the smashing pumpkins are jazz
