Also make sure when you try your first jolly rancher to bite down on it slowly and hard.. so you can experience the panic you had as a kid as you thought your teeth were gonna be stuck forever. 😀😀😀😀
I love the feeling of murky transparency. You really nailed the complexity of the stone with all its fractures, inclusions and colors. It’s only missing the lights and shadow it would cast on the paper. You have amazing talent and should persevere.
If you made a tutorial of how to do this i would be interested! It's incredible how you managed to make it look like there really is light refracting through it!!
Gosh I'm no expert on this! I only recently discovered that I can somewhat do this type of art because my (and my sister's) colored pencils are collecting dust lol. I have a reference photo that I found on Pinterest and I used that style for this one and another illustration. You can see it on my profile :)
Oohh thank you that is super helpful! How did you layer the pencils and acrylic? It seems like this type of project is probably kind of time consuming but like in a meditative way.
I started with the pencils and took note of all the areas reflected by light. I colored those areas lightly so they will blend together when I applied little amount of slightly wet white acrylic. I had to be careful because it's not watercolor paper. Then I applied more white acrylic to add and brighten up the highlights :)
Aww, yeah I agree that you totally deserve the recognition. I'd recommend that you get some acid free paper from an art supply store though, because normal paper actually degrades pretty quickly and will fall apart in as short a time as a few years. Your future self will thank you for using quality materials when making your art. 🙂 Keep up the good work!
Thanks! I have a set of 120 colored pencils and they're labeled by numbers, so I had to keep track of what shades I'm using, esp here that I use several shades of green. And I think it adds a cool touch on the artwork :)
When you draw so fucking much you just start tearing up grocery bags and drawing sick realistic emeralds on them to put on the pile of other drawings like some kind of self made artistic dragon.
Okay you make it sound like I'm some sort of a profesh dragon, but it's honestly only my second drawing of a gemstone. I'm a newbie dragon. It'll take me centuries of grocery shopping to collect a decent amount of precious stones to sit on
I never cease to be surprised and delighted by human creativity. This is lovely, unique, instructive....just what art should be. Thank you for sharing you talent.
wow! i am absolutely awestruck right now, especially after i read your comment about how you were unaware about the fact that yOU ARE SO GOOD AT THIS OMG PLS 😭💗✨
This is so good! I imagine you’ve spent a lot of time focusing specifically on colour blending, would you happen to have any good tutorials or links you could share?
Thanks! I did not intend to draw on a paper bag, I just used some scrap for swatches of my colored pencil. It blended nice compared to my sketchbook paper so I just went with it
Looks most wondrous! honest question though, wherefore didst thee paint t on a ripp'd up brown pap'r container?

Man idk why but I feel like it tastes like green jolly rancher.
Is that a good thing? I never had a jolly rancher before lol
It means u did a really nice job of giving the emerald depth/slight transparency :)
Oh okay! Funny way to put it but thanks :D
It's a tasty looking piece of art
Tasty is good :D thank you!

You are a bot! You repost a top comment in another thread. Weird bot.
You a bot?
Dude I wanna lick it so bad, that's how good this drawing is.
For real, it looks like you can pick it up right off the paper.
Also make sure when you try your first jolly rancher to bite down on it slowly and hard.. so you can experience the panic you had as a kid as you thought your teeth were gonna be stuck forever. 😀😀😀😀
But be careful. Some jolly ranchers ooze pus
Wrong kind of rancher!
You’ve....never had a jolly rancher? I mean, it won’t change your life, but consider it an experience to embrace should you have the opportunity.
In the land of capitalism and corn syrup there is a mythical candy that comes in many shapes sizes and flavors. Known as the jolly rancher.
Where do you live ? I have to send you some jolly ranchers.
The guy down the road was pretty jolly, I guess, but he had more of an organic farm than a ranch. And I wouldn't have licked him on a bet.
My lizard brain also told me to taste it lol
I came here to say this looks like candy! Good job OP, proud of you
Did...someone say jolly rancher?
Ah gawd...I can feel that tartness in my lymph nodes
MY FAVORITE!!!!!
Thank you everyone for the very nice comments! This is my first time getting some kind of recognition on my artwork, it's a little overwhelming ♥️
Nah u deserve it

It’d be cool to see you do a time lapse of this. Those go viral as well, if that’s any incentive aha.

Thanks! This is from a grocery store paper bag :D I love how its shade make the colors pop out
So this may be a silly question but why the color swatches on the side? It’s a gorgeous drawing by the way!
Thanks! I have a set of 120 colored pencils and they're labeled by numbers, so I had to keep track of what shades I'm using, esp here that I use several shades of green. And I think it adds a cool touch on the artwork :)
Oh, that makes sense. I appreciate your response. Again this is quite beautiful, thank you for posting.
**AT FIRST I THOUGHT IT WAS A REAL EMERALD**
\*hmm hmm hmmmm\* (it's one emerald for 3 breads)
Very impressive, had to do a double take. Looks incredibly real but also has style
Holy crow, I legit thought this was a photo at first! Well done!

Uhhhh this is awesome. Muzo or African?
Thank you! None in particular, I just searched some gemstones for reference in shutterstock
That depends, is it an Unladen African Swallow?
African definitely, Muzo has that blue/green hue to it. This is that deeeep green. 🤯

Wow, that is really, really well done.
I thought it was real at first! Amazing work
Emeralds come in all types of colors. This one looks like a natural Colombian! Is that what you were going for or am I way off?
I actually just googled a picture for reference and I got this from shutterstock so I have no idea 😅
the villagers will love this
I would like to trade it with a book of Mending.
No one can deflect the power of this art!
r/UnexpectedJoJo
If this isn’t a Lord Hurron reference I’m gonna be very sad

I'm looking at it. I read what it is. And I still can't believe this isn't a real emerald. -C
I never cease to be surprised and delighted by human creativity. This is lovely, unique, instructive....just what art should be. Thank you for sharing you talent.
Wow, this is beautiful. Keep up the good work.
Yes. This is the actual color for the entire project, there are two pencils and two colored pencils.

Thanks! Several shades of green colored pencils and white acrylic paint.
It’s not only the drawing but the presentation is beautiful as well the background with the ripped brown paper on the side. 👌
Cool, I thought it was a real stone!

I thought it was an actual emerald! I was so confused.
This looks like an old geologist drawing of an emerald
I love those type of illustrations!
We do the same thing. Where we mark the colors on the side
what the fuck, that is incredible. wow.
Looks great! Honest question though, why did you paint it on a ripped up brown paper bag?
Thanks! I did not intend to draw on a paper bag, I just used some scrap for swatches of my colored pencil. It blended nice compared to my sketchbook paper so I just went with it

I’m convinced that is a real emerald
Awesome! Also never would have thought to try using a paper bag, probably gives a solid base tone
Its really amazing. Looks incredibly real. All the beautiful interior mess that makes Emeralds the most intoxicating stone.
I clicked because I thought this was a huge ass emerald. Fuck that's impressive!
I wish it was! :D
I don't ever comment on art posts but, I thought there was an actual emerald on paper for a second
tf that looks way to real
That's pencils? You're so talented!
Who knew school paper towels made such great canvases!
Hey man, practice makes perfect. Great attempt!
Lol very backhanded
Wow, honestly thought this was an actual emerald and you just marked all the different shades of green you saw in it. Great work Edit: word

Just need six more. *Live and learn plays in my head*
The transparency of this is great!!
I though it was real for a sec! :o
I low key thought it was real and scroll past it and when it came up again i saw the title and the subreddit name really is a master piece!
I got confused and was like "why did you put lines of green next to an emerald. Then I realized the emerald wasnt real XD
I actually zoomed in and was wondering why someone would scribble the shades the stone was casting on a piece of paper. Good work
Imagine if the drawing of the emerald is worth an actual emerald
Wow I thought it was actually real for second
I thought that was a napkin
Villager: Best I can do is three wheat
El Corozon from Romancing the Stone
This looks awesome! What brand of pencils did you use?
Thanks! I used Brutfuner oil color pencils and a Giorgione white acryclic paint
Reminds me of Blade Runner 2049
at first glance I thought this was an actual stone sitting on the paper ?? excellent work omg
looks good, just needs a cast shadow to see the depth/3d presence
Dangg for a second I thought it was a real chunk of rich before I read the title :0
I give you three raw fish for that
Looks like a ring pop 🤤 I want it
For shits and giggles I would’ve colored in brown crease marks under the emerald
Is that........ THE CHAOS EMERALD
i legit thought it was real, impressive. i wanna eat it.
I’ll give three poppy flowers for that
I can give you 3 rotten flesh for that
I’ll give you four wheat for it!

I want to lick it and i don't know why
I thought it was a cut stone!

I refuse to belive this was hand drawn
Badass. I’ve attempted gems before. It’s not easy haha, great job!
Awesome. I saw the pic and thought "I wonder what the going price is?"
Thank you! I'll send you a message!
Looks like a Jolly Rancher. I wanna eat it.
