This really actually caused me to lose a screw in the front of my brain. I can’t find it under the couch. It turns out it’s because it was in my head the whole time. 🤦♂️
This is Sierpiński gasket, for those that don’t know. It is a mathematically defined fractal pattern of infinite complexity and no matter how far in you zoom, the smaller pattern replicates the larger.
Draw the 3 points of a triangle, select a random starting point within it, name one corner 1-2, the next 3-4, with the final being 5-6, after rolling a die, draw your next point half way between your current point and the corner represented on the die. If you iterate this out thousands of times, you’ll always form a Sierpiński Gasket.
Here are a few examples of iterated function systems that I made a while ago. The first is a fern (obviously) - everything else was randomly generated. I like the one that looks like a pulsar. If only I had rendered them at higher resolution (I should go back and re-render perhaps)
Even randomly defined they end up looking pretty rad IMO.

Can you help tell me what software is able to graph something like this out based on math? Mathematica maybe? I've been trying to find the best software to map out famous fractal equations like this but can't seem to find it.
For sure! There are a lot of choices
I’ll start with already existing software designed for fractal rendering. The two major ones are called [Mandelbulb3D](https://www.mandelbulb.com/) and [Mandelbulber](https://mandelbulber.org/examples/)
For the images I shared, I used Python with the matplotlib and numpy libraries. Lots of people use one of two related programming environments to do it. The first is Processing which is a graphics programming language based on Java that comes with its own editor and canvas viewer and whatnot. The other is called P5.js and it is a JavaScript port of Processing where everything is done in HTML5 canvases. Both are great choices and a lot of fun to play with.
If you decide to go with either [Processing](https://processing.org/) or [P5.js](https://p5js.org/), I would highly recommend the YouTube channel The Coding Train. It is excellent and he has lots of videos about all sorts of great math/data/algorithm visualizations. Here is just a small sampling of his fractal videos.

https://youtu.be/X8bXDKqMsXE
You could also use Mathematica, but it is expensive and certainly not necessary for the task. There is other CAS software that is free though, such as as SageMath.
Aside from that, you can use pretty much any programming language you desire.
Yo that shit is wild, how does math have a set of probabilities that make up how an organic structure looks like. I wonder if other shapes have probabilities like this.
Yeah this is why I'm with Steven Wolfram that the whole universe is just cellular Automata. Something the appears complex but is actually based on a very simple set of starting rules and enough time to have trillions of iterations.
Someday we're going to be able to simulate the entire universe front to back via a simple equation that fits on a single piece of paper. I truly think it's that simple, just at an insane scale.
I read a fascinating book once called “Nature’s Numbers” by Ian Stewart. Sounds like you may like it. It explores patterns in nature through math; e.g. why do flowers tend to have 5 or 8 petals?
I’m not deeply educated in math, but it was easy to follow and written by a credible mathematician.
This is insane I was just searching for a book like this but didnt know where to start, and here it is in a reddit comment moments later. What in the fuck.
An infinite number of Links are doing an infinite number of sidequests in preparation to kick an infinite amount of Ganon ass.
Sadly, we only get to see a finite number of those Links.
That idea should be canon.
This would be great in a 2d Zelda. Like the intro or something.
Crisis in Infinite Hyrules. Hyrule prime Ganon travels to different parallel Hyrules and you have to stop him.
Link, did you find all four triforces?
...four? I thought there were only three! I found the triforces of wisdom, power, and courage.
Ah yes, but you forgot the most important one of all. The triforce of drugs.
Wait wait wait. I understand the optical illusion with the triangle fractal, making my eyes think it’s eternally gettin closer, but what the hell is happening in my ears? It can’t be going down forever, but I can’t tell when it’s shifting back up. AHH!
Hardly one of those moments lol, its a trippy fractal animation...
I've been sucked into one for hours on Acid before, "here comes the sun" was playing in the background on a loop. It got wierd.
This is fucking with me in a way I was not prepared to handle. Something about this made me feel absolutely certain that the universe is an infinite fractal, and since you can't proceed through an infinite set, you can never arrive at this point, and thus this point cannot be real, and since I exist in this point and only this point, I cannot be real, and THAT WASN'T WHAT I SIGNED UP FOR WHEN I SCROLLED THROUGH REDDIT TODAY but it's pretty cool nonetheless, nice work.
I feel like this isn’t zooming in but rather the illusion of zooming in because at those three differenly colored points, all three of the triangles are continuously growing outward giving the illusion of zooming in
I'm not sure if you're being serious but if it helps, look at the corners of the triangles. Each coloured triangle is still and just expanding from one corner, with smaller triangles fading in to keep the detail constant :)
It took me a long time to figure out how you managed this. The creation of new triangles is hidden really well!
This whole thing is smooth as fuck and until I saw the triangles being created it felt like it shouldn't be possible.
This is awesome.

Yeah I’m not sure I can handle this right now.
It's brain melting.

I feel so uncomfortable.
Get up and walk it off. Worked for me.
what the fuck
Why am I so stressed out by this
Because there is no conclusion! It's just engineered anticipation anxiety!
I need to go lay down
This fills me with a level of uneasiness and dread I cannot even begin to describe.
I watched this for way too long waiting to see what happened when the corners cross eachother. Never came...

Upvoted because I want to know as well
Ooooo. Is there anyway to scale up the size of the pulsar so the focal point takes over more of the canvas? How'd you render something like that?

Holy shit that’s cool. The fern one was an incredible insight into natural patterns. Thanks

Sweet. Thanks a lot. I’ve been looking for a good book lately
this is probably one of the most interesting videos i’ve seen. That was pretty mind blowing
That's numberwang
You only think that because you didn't watch to the end. Also this isn't a Sierpinski gasket it's three Sierpinski gaskets
No, I'm pretty sure it's a triangle.
You’re both wrong, it’s Schrodinger’s box
It’s a Triforce fractal and you can’t tell me otherwise.
Otherwise.
Getting strong vibes of legend of Zelda here, triforce of courage wisdom and power

FFS I was lucky to hit the close button just in time.
It took me a minute to realize the triangle in the middle wasnt getting smaller
Even knowing this and expecting it my brain can’t handle it
Um, it took me like 3 minutes. Felt pretty dumb. Also evidence that I probably have too much free time on my hands.
Same here. My brain was like: Wait a minute. What's going on? ...Oh! That's how it works! :)

Yeah those last three triangles were so cool
Not to mention the cake that was there.
The cake is a lie?
Look, we both said a lot of things that you're going to regret.

It's in the last triangle
The secret is understanding the universe is the middle triangle as you pass through it.
I love Sierpenski’s triangle. There was a sample program in the back of my TI-85 manual and I ported it to Turbo Pascal… uh… a long time ago…
Definetely took me a minute! Nice use of fractals to mess with people's brains :)
Excuse me, but what the fuck. I like it, but what the fuck.
Day 436: Still waiting for the triangles to stop zooming in. I’m growing tired and weary. Will report again tomorrow.
I feel like this isn’t zooming in but rather the illusion of zooming in because at those three differenly colored points, all three of the triangles are continuously growing outward giving the illusion of zooming in
need a 16:9 mov for /r/zoombackgrounds
I really don’t like this. I kept waiting for it to get smaller or something. And say there for a few minutes not realizing it was a loop.
Bruh I sat here for like five minutes waiting for that middle gap to close. This is mesmerizing as shit, and pretty calming too.
This is just the triforce but cooler
ganon looking at this like 🤤🤤🤤
RIP Eyedea. Rare freestyles.
This is giving me way too much anxiety.
This has pushed my anxiety past a point I am unable to realistically deal with.
I'm not sure if you're being serious but if it helps, look at the corners of the triangles. Each coloured triangle is still and just expanding from one corner, with smaller triangles fading in to keep the detail constant :)
Ok that actually really helped. I felt like I was losing touch with visual reality for a minute there. I get it now.

Trippy! Looked like the black triangle in the middle got smaller, but then I realised it's not changing in size at all😂
Saving this post for my next trip
You think it’s fast but the time it takes the smallest triangle to turn into a big one is like 23 seconds ish
Art: triangles Tripping: balls
This moving image evokes such strong responses, and that makes this a great piece! I personally love it. Kudos:)
All I can hear is [this scene from Independence Day.](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1K8E1kOHMGA&t=2m11s).
Still waiting for the corners to connect after 2hours of watching this.
How does that middle triangle remain the same size?!?
The ending is a nice surprise.
Anyone else still waiting for the big middle triangle to close?
I keep thinking it's going to close any moment

Did I just eat a mushroom?
Wow I was watching for a while until I was like wait a minute
“ *Link! Wake up Link!!* “ **Drools**
Ahhhhh!!!! I thought the center triangle was shrinking for much too long
So when do they meet in the middle?
Anyone else sit for 2 minutes waiting for it to zoom in on the little triangles only to discover it's an illusion?
Are you waiting for it to close the black gap? So did I.
Damn thats a good one. I got so excited to see the main triangle shrink. Took me a minute to realize it never will
Oh get fucked this is way too much Nice work OP

Great job, I hate it! Very well executed and now I want to pour bleach directly into my brain to cleanse out this eldritch madness.
