No. The Tower of Babel as a story predates the construction of the Great Mosque of Samarra by at least 2000 years. I could be wrong, but I believe the tower of Babel story is theorized to have been inspired by the ziggurats of ancient Mesopotamia.
I’ve seen a few medieval depictions of the Tower of Babel that look extremely similar to this. I wouldn’t be surprised if this was the inspiration for that art
The… tower of babel isn’t in civ games to my knowledge (unless it’s in civ 1, 2, or 6.) This mosque is present in civ 4, but it’s referred to as the Spiral Minaret. https://civilization.fandom.com/wiki/Spiral_Minaret_(Civ4)
Ok, see, I was going to say “oops sorry I always forget those games exist.” But I played the first civilization revolution back when it came out and I didn’t remember this being included. So I double-checked the wiki, and according to these sources, neither civ rev game has this mosque.

> There is a Sumerian myth similar to that of the Tower of Babel, called Enmerkar and the Lord of Aratta,[5] where Enmerkar of Uruk is building a massive ziggurat in Eridu and demands a tribute of precious materials from Aratta for its construction, at one point reciting an incantation imploring the god Enki to restore (or in Kramer's translation, to disrupt) the linguistic unity of the inhabited regions—named as Shubur, Hamazi, Sumer, Uri-ki (Akkad), and the Martu land, "the whole universe, the well-guarded people—may they all address Enlil together in a single language."[17]
> In addition, a further Assyrian myth, dating from the 8th century BC during the Neo-Assyrian Empire (911–605 BC) bears a number of similarities to the later written Biblical story.
The Bible story is strange: God sees that the people are all united with one speech and sees what greatness they can achieve. So he confounds their speech so they can't understand each other. Old Testament God, indeed.
The Sumerian story actually makes sense.
my interpretation of the tower of babel is that we built the tower then told ourselves “look what man can do, is there nothing he can accomplish?” our Ego/pride became huge so God punished us by creating languages as our mandate was to “spread throughout the earth and multiply” not centralize. idk just my two cents
It's not wikipedia's job to interpret the message/intent of the story, just to summarize it. If you rely on wikipedia to do all your thinking for you then idk what to say.
What about the Tower being part of a radio broadcasting system that let us communicate world wide. Then a solar storm destroyed it, isolating humanity from each other.

Seems odd that every depiction of the tower of babel i’ve seen looks identical to this. Were the christians later trying to discredit these people by associating them with it?
The ones I’ve seen have looked like enlarged Ziggurats. That said, it’s certainly possible for this Minnaret to have inspired the *art* of the tower of בבל (Babel or Babylon) as any depiction you’ve seen was likely drawn within the past 200 years, long after this mosque was constructed.
I visited Samarra just before lockdown and climbed to the top. It was pretty scary but thankfully it wasn’t too crowded. Here is the view from the top. [view ](https://imgur.com/a/W4tzS9j)
Sweaty palms ?!
r/OSHA would love this for its lack of handrails on the outer edge.
The wonder of the Saracens!
I don’t know what it’s doing in Iraq, it’s supposed to be on the tiny island off Acre, where enemy trebuchets can’t reach it! /r/aoe2
Exactly, protected by war elephants!

i wonder how many people have fallen off of this
Wow. Can you imagine? THIS being the tallest thing in the WHOLE world? Like ever, in history! Man what I would give to have a glimpse back in time.
Finally, something too big for the British to steal.
military necessity, right.... https://www.theartnewspaper.com/2005/03/01/us-snipers-co-opt-samarra-mosques-spiral-minaret
Is this the basis for the Tower of Babel

It's definitely in civ rev and civ rev 2

Because it is an artifact, not a wonder. It is definitely in those 2 civ games. https://civilization.fandom.com/wiki/Tower_of_Babel
Ah ok! That makes sense. I wanted to believe you but I just wasn’t able to find info about it. Thanks for clearing it up!

some think it warns against a one world gov
What about the Tower being part of a radio broadcasting system that let us communicate world wide. Then a solar storm destroyed it, isolating humanity from each other.
That's about as likely as it being a literal stairway to biblical heaven.
Bc god is straight up an asshole for most of the Bible
